Kaela Wold (Jr, Eau Claire) smashed out two home runs in the opening game with Oshkosh, including a three-run dinger in the seven run seventh. Wold led all hitters, going 4-for-5 with five RBI, smacking out a two-run shot in the fifth.

BLUE DEVILS STRIKE OUT IN SERIES WITH ST. SCHOLASTICA

MENOMONIE
- Strike out. Strike out. Strike out.

UW-Stout was the victim of 24 strikeouts over two games, losing both contests to St. Scholastica, 6-1, 2-1, at Alumni Field, Thursday, April 15.

The Saints' Laura Heise notched 24 strikeouts in pitching all 14 innings, recording 14 in the first game, 10 in the second, this coming off a 13 strikeout performance the day before. Of the 10 batters Stout sent to the plate on the day, only one did not record at least one strikeout.

St. Scholastica (20-3) took advantage of two third inning Stout errors to score four runs in the inning.

Stout (20-10) got their only run in the fourth. Heather Novalany (Jr, Cottage Grove, Minn) reached on a single, then scored from first when a pick off play went awry as the ball went into right field.

Scholastica tacked on single runs in the fifth and seventh innings.

Stout managed only four hits, with Kaela Wold (Jr, Eau Claire) getting two. The Blue Devils left the bases loaded in the second inning for their best scoring opportunity.

Missy Erickson hit a solo home run in the top of the seventh inning to hand St. Scholastica the sweep.

Stout opened the game with a run in their half of the first inning. Kim Caswell (Sr, Stanley) singled, then advanced to second on an error. Caswell moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Melissa Coon (So, Cudahy), then came home on a bunt single by Erin O'Connell (Jr, Altoona).

St. Scholastica tied the score in the sixth on an RBI by Joann Juten.

Wold went 3-for-3 in the game, 5-for-6 on the day, but did not drive in a run or score. Stout stranded eight runners in the first game, five in the second.

BLUE DEVILS SWEEP HIGH FLYING SUPERIOR

SUPERIOR - UW-Stout had to work hard for it, but the Blue Devils swept a pair of games from UW-Superior at Superior, Wednesday, April 14.

The Blue Devils (20-8, 5-1) got three runs in the top of the 11th inning to win the first game, 6-5, then came back with a strong first three innings to take the nightcap, 7-6. The two conference wins puts the Blue Devils in first place heading into this weekend's WIAC Cluster Tournament.

In the opener, Kim Caswell (Sr, Stanley) opened the 11th by reaching on an error. Melissa Coon (So, Cudahy) bunted her to second and Superior opted to intentionally walk Erin O'Connell (Jr, Altoona), last year's conference home run leader. Kaela Wold (Jr, Eau Claire) made the Yellowjackets pay when she doubled to bring both Caswell and O'Connell home. Wold advanced to third on a play at the plate and scored on Jamie Gorges' (Jr, New London) groundout.

Superior (20-3, 2-2) added two unearned runs in the bottom of the 11th, but stranded a runner at second base.

Caswell was 3-for-6, include a triple, with three runs scored. Wold drove in three runs on 2-for-2 hitting.

Stout opened the second game with a three-run second inning, thanks to two RBI by Megan Donley (So, Fridley, Minn), who was in the lineup as a designated hitter. Cassie Tock (Fr, Sparta) drove in the other run in the inning.

Stout tacked on three more in the third, two of them coming on a Courtney Zafft (So, Rochester, Minn) triple to center field. Heather Novalany (Jr, Cottage Grove, Minn) was credited with driving in the other run, despite grounding into a double play.

O'Connell hit her sixth home run of the year, a solo shot in the fourth inning, the eventual game winner.

Superior put up two runs in the fourth and three in the fifth, then made it interesting with one run in the bottom of the seventh, but Donley, who went to the mound in the fifth, settled down to get the final three outs with a runner on third.

Donley got the win in the first game, striking out six, to run her record to 15-7, one more win than all of last year, and Emily Zahn (So, Champlin, Minn) worked four innings to record the second game win.

BLUE DEVILS SHARE A PAIR OF GAMES WITH BLUGOLDS

MENOMONIE
- UW-Stout had only seven hits on the day but strung enough together to earn a split with UW-Eau Claire, Monday, April 12 in Stout's home opener at Alumni Field.

Stout (18-8, 3-1) won the first game, 2-0, but Eau Claire (12-11, 3-1) bounced back for a 7-2 win in the nightcap.

The Blue Devils' managed only two hits in the opener, but made a two-run home run by Erin O'Connell (Jr, Altoona) in the bottom of the fourth inning stand up.

Melissa Coon (So, Cudahy) led off the inning with a walk and O'Connell's no-question drive over the center field fence was the only offensive fireworks of the game.

Megan Donley (So, Fridley, Minn) picked up her fifth consecutive win - and her fifth shutout of the season - in scattering four hits, two each by the Blugolds' Molly Blakewell and Shannon Wing.

After Stout took a 1-0 lead in the second game on a bases loaded walk by Jamie Gorges (Jr, New London), the Blugolds got to Donley, driving her to the dugout in the second inning with a four run, four hit inning.

BLUE DEVILS BLOW BACK FOR BIG SECOND GAME WIN

MENOMONIE
- After losing the opening game, 10-5, committing more errors than runs, the UW-Stout baseball team blew back in a big way to win the second game of a conference doubleheader with UW-Stevens Point, 20-6 in eight innings, Sunday, April 18 at Nelson Field.

The Blue Devils (5-18, 4-10) blew through four Stevens Point pitcher for 24 hits and 17 earned runs in the nightcap.

The Pointers (13-9, 7-5) took a 2-0 lead after solo runs in the first and second innings. Stout roared back with four runs in the third inning on RBIs by Tim Nielson (So, Rosemount, Minn), Greg Meinertz (Jr, La Crosse) and Jim Foreman (Sr, Apple Valley, Minn). Stout tacked on a run in the fourth when Corey Endreas (Sr, Spencer) scored on a passed ball.

The Pointers added a run in the fifth, but Stout took over with four runs in the sixth as Nielson drove in two runs with a single. Jake Riek (Sr, Boyceville) doubled in a run and Brandt Buckley (So, Menomonie) had an RBI.

Stevens Point put up three runs in the sixth on five hits.

Stout assumed control with five runs in the seventh and six in the eighth.

Buckley, who went 11-of-16 in the four game weekend series with the Pointers, was 3-for-3 with four RBI and a run scored - and he didn't even start, coming as the designated hitter after two at-bats.

Nielson, who hit 10-of-19 with eight RBI on the weekend, went 3-for-5 with four RBI. Foreman was 4-for-6 with three RBI. Riek was 4-for-5 with four runs scored.

Jason Kuehn (Jr, Augusta) picked up his first win of the season, giving up all six runs, five earned, in six complete innings pitched. Kuehn struck out three and walked three. Dan Olson (Fr, Eau Claire) came on in relief to pitch the final two innings, giving up only one hit and allowing a walk.

Even with the wind blowing at gusts up to 40 miles per hour from left field to right, the ball did not sail out of the park. Stevens Point's Mike Hall was the only hitter to collect a home run.

The first game belonged to the Pointers, but not until Stout took a 5-0 lead over the first two innings.

Stout picked up four runs in the opening inning, as Nielson, Meinertz, Olson and Dustin VanderVorst (Fr, River Falls) each drove in a run. Foreman brought Nielson home in the second inning with a sacrifice fly, and Stout's scoring was over in that game.

BLUE DEVILS AND POINTERS SPLIT EXTRA INNING GAMES

MENOMONIE
- It was a good day for baseball and UW-Stout and UW-Stevens Point played a lot of it as the two conference rivals split a pair of extra inning games with each team producing the winning run in the final inning, Saturday, April 17 at Nelson Field.

The Blue Devils (4-17, 3-9) won the first game, 5-4, in 12 innings on the final play of the and the Pointers (12-8, 6-4) took the nightcap, 3-1, in their half of the 10th inning as the teams played 22 complete innings of ball.

Corey Endreas (Sr, Spencer) beat the throw to the plate on Greg Meinertz's (Jr, La Crosse) fielder's choice to second to notch the opening game win.

Stout led for most of the game as Tim Nielson (So, Rosemount, Minn) drove in a run in the third and the fifth and Jake Riek (Sr, Boyceville) hit a solo home run in the fourth.

The Pointers broke up Joe Huiting's (Sr, Little Chute) shutout bid in the eghth when Joe Waksmonski grounded into a double play with the bases loaded to score Jake Frombach. Stevens Point tied the game in the ninth when Frombach doubled to centerfield to drive in two runs.

Huiting lasted 11 complete innings, giving way to Nick Jones (Sr, La Crosse) and Dan Olson (Fr, Eau Claire). The right-handed Jones and left-handed Olson alternated between the mound and first base, giving up a run in the top of the 12th on a Wakmonski single to shallow centerfield.

The Blue Devils started off hot in the 12th when Brandt Buckley (So, Menomonie), who would go 7-for-10 on the day, opened the inning with a shot off the pitcher. Buckley advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Todd Brunclik (So, Birchwood), then was pushed to third by Endreas' single.

Nileson was safe on a fielder's choice, and so was Endreas on an error that sent him to third. Meinertz then hit a hard shot deep in the hole at second base and Endreas slide under the tag for the win.

Olson was the benefactor of the play, picking up his second win of the season, facing only two batters and surrendering a hit. Kevin Pankow was saddled with the loss in three innings of relief.

Frombach was 4-for-6 with two RBI for the Pointers and Waksmonski was 2-for-5. Buckley was 4-for-5 for the Blue Devils. Nielson was 2-for-5 with three RBI and Brunclik was 2-for-4.

In the second game, Matt Peterson hit a single to centerfield in the top of the 10th to drive in the eventual winning runs.

Stout nursed a 1-0 lead into the fifth innning when pitcher Matt Christman (So, South Milwaukee) threw a wild pitch, allowing a run. Christman pitched 9-2/3 innings before an error put the eventual winning run on. Christman faced 39 batters, striking out six. Matt Mehne pitched 2-1/3 innings for the win, striking out two.

Both teams had their opportunities with Stevens Point stranding nine runners and Stout 14. Stout three times left two runners on base and once left the bases loaded.

Buckley and Jim Foreman (Sr, Apple Valley, Minn) were each 3-for-5 for the Blue Devils. Brunclik was 2-for-5 and Nielson 2-for-4. Chuck Brehm was 2-for-5 for the Pointers and Peterson, who figured into all of the scoring, was 2-for-4 with the two RBI and one run scored.
