BLUE DEVIL ATHLETICS TO TEST INTERNET RADIO

MENOMONIE
- The University of Wisconsin-Stout will make a test run of broadcasting three home softball games over the Internet.

The Blue Devils' contests against UW-Eau Claire, Monday, April 12, St. Scholastica, Thursday, April 15 and UW-La Crosse, Thursday, April 22, will be available on the Internet off the UW-Stout athletics web page or at:

http://www.uwstout.edu/athletics/radio/bdradio.htm

"With the advances and commitments the university has made to technology, we see this as taking another step in advancing the Blue Devil athletic programs," said sports information director Layne Pitt, who has headed up the project. "We are testing the network with the softball games, and hope to expand our internet radio coverage to other sports that do not currently have commercial coverage."

Long time Blue Devil booster and radio personality Jake Bostrom will be calling the play-by-play on what is being called Blue Devil Radio. The broadcasts are scheduled to begin five minutes before first pitch.

"We are looking for people to become involved in our test project and give us feedback about the broadcasts," Pitt said.

The broadcasts will be available by using Windows Media Player, which is a free download from Microsoft. The free download is available from the UW-Stout athletics web page.

BLUE DEVILS HOLD FALCONS TO ONE RUN IN EACH GAME

RIVER FALLS - Megan Donley (So, Fridley, Minn) held UW-River Falls to one run in each game as UW-Stout swept their WIAC opening games, 7-1, 3-1, over the Falcons, Thursday, April 8 at River Falls.

Donley got a strong offensive hand from Erin O'Connell (Jr, Altoona), who hit 6-for-7 on the afternoon with three RBI - all in the first game - and scored four runs. O'Connell opened up her afternoon by stroking a three-run home run in the first inning of the first game, her fourth home run of the season.

The Falcons (13-9, 0-4) cut into the lead with a single run in the second, but Stout (17-7, 2-0) broke the game open with a two-run third inning when O'Connell and Kaela Wold (Jr, Eau Claire) both scored on the same error. Stout tacked on single runs in the sixth on a Kim Caswell (Sr, Stanley) infield hit and in the seventh on a Jamie Gorges (Jr, New London) double.

Stout smacked out 14 hits in the game to six hits for the Falcons. Caswell, Melissa Coon (So, Cudahy), Wold and Gorges all finished with two hits.

In the nightcap, Stout scored two runs in the third inning and another run in the seventh. In the third, Wold doubled to drive in O'Connell and a double by Courtney Zafft (So, Rochester, Minn) brought home Wold. The Falcons worked a single run off Donley in the fourth, but Donley worked out of the bases-loaded jam.

Gorges gave Stout their final run of the day, again driving in O'Connell, this time on a single to right center field.

Stout finished the game with nine hits, with O'Connell getting three and Wold two.

Donley completed the day with only one strikeout, but allowed only one walk over 14 total innings of work.

Stout will host UW-Eau Claire, Monday, April 12 at 4 p.m., then will take on St. Scholastica, Thursday, April 15 in a 4 p.m. make-up game.

BLUE DEVILS TAKE PAIR OF GAMES FROM HAMLINE

ST. PAUL, Minn
- Megan Donley (So, Fridley, Minn) pitched her fourth shutout of the season and Erin O'Connell (Jr, Altoona) hit her second and third home runs of the season to lift Stout to a 3-0, 7-2 sweep at Hamline University, Tuesday, April 6.

In the shutout, Donley scattered four hits, two of them coming in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Pipers stranded two runners to end the game. Donley struck out two and allowed no walks.

Stout (15-7) drew first blood, scoring two runs. Kaela Wold's (Jr, Altoona) groundout scored Kim Caswell (Sr, Stanley) and Jamie Gorges' (Jr, New London) single to right center drove in Melissa Coon (So, Cudahy), who had reached on a single.

Gorges got her second RBI of the night in the third inning when she brought home Wold, who had doubled.

O'Connell, last year's NCAA Division III home run champion, got in stride in her first at-bat of the second game, delivering a solo home run to give Stout a 1-0 lead. Caswell scored on an error in the third to push Stout up 2-0. Heather Novalany (Jr, Cottage Grove, Minn) drove in O'Connell, who led off the fourth inning with a double, on a single to left field to give Stout a 3-0 lead.

The Pipers (12-7) got an unearned run in the fourth to break Donley's scoreless streak at 11 innings, stretching back to April 3.

O'Connell opened up the game with a three run shot in the fifth inning. Hamline added a run in the sixth and Stout topped off the night with a solo run in the seventh off the bat of Wold.

O'Connell was 3-for-3 with four RBI in the second game after going hitless in the opener. Caswell was 2-for-4 in the second game and 3-for-3 in the first game. Donley went the distance to pick up the win in the second game, striking out three and walking three. She scattered 10 hits and surrendered one earned run.

WHITEWATER TAKES TWO FROM BLUE DEVILS

MENOMONIE
- UW-Whitewater scored 19 unanswered runs in a 19-2 first game win, then returned for a 13-5 second game win as the Warhawks swept UW-Stout, Friday, April 9 at Nelson Field.

Sacrifice flies by Stout's Corey Endreas (Sr, Spencer) and Greg Meinertz (Jr, La Crosse) in the first inning were all the offense Stout would muster in the opener as Whitewater powered back with three runs in the first and seven in the second to take control in this seven inning win.

The Warhawks (16-5, 9-1) added four runs in the fourth and sixth innings and one run in the fifth.

The Blue Devils (3-16, 2-8) were held to four hits and rarely got a runner in scoring position, stranding four.

In the nightcap, the two teams pounded each other's pitching, as Whitewater cranked out 14 hits and the Blue Devils 13 hits.

The Warhawks took a 1-0 lead in the first, but Stout had their biggest offensive output of the afternoon in the second inning with a three-run home run by Brandt Buckley (So, Menomonie).

Whitewater added five runs in the second, one in the third and sixth in the fifth inning. The Blue Devils manufactured single runs in the sixth and seventh. Nick Jones (Sr, La Crosse), who generally is a pitcher, started in left field and slammed a deep double to center field to drive in a run in the sixth. Tim Nielson (So, Rosemount, Minn) drove in the run in the seventh.

Buckley went 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored. Nielson and Jon Kroening (Sr, Ladysmith) each went 2-for-5 and Todd Brunclik (So, Birchwood) was 2-for-4.

The Warhawks got three RBI from Ryan Callahan and Aaron Guilbault.

Stout will host UW-La Crosse, Wednesday, April 14, at 1 p.m. then will host UW-Stevens Point, April 17 and 18 at noon.

BLUE DEVILS TAKE ONE FROM NATIONALLY RANKED WARHAWKS

MENOMONIE
- UW-Stout pitcher Joe Huiting (Sr, Little Chute) only got better in the last half of the game as he pitched his first collegiate complete game, to get his first win of the season in a 7-4 opening game win over nationally ranked UW-Whitewater, Thursday, April 8 at Nelson Field.

Huiting scattered 11 hits, but allowed only one hit in the final four innings, and that runner he picked off. Huiting struck out one, but allowed no walks in the game.

The win was the first for the Blue Devils over Whitewater since May 9, 1999.

Whitewater, ranked 24th in the latest American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Division III poll, came back for a 10-0, seven inning win in the second game.

The opener didn't start out so well for Huiting, who served up a two-run home run to the Warhawks' Brady Endl in the top of the first inning.

The Blue Devils (3-14, 2-6) knotted the score in their half of the inning. Corey Endreas (Sr, Spencer) reached safely after a dropped third strike, then was brought home moments later on Tim Nielson's (So, Rosemount, Minn) triple to center field. Foreman doubled in Nielson.

Whitewater (14-5, 7-1) jumped out front in the fifth, 4-2, squeezing home a run, followed by an Endl RBI double.

The Blue Devils took the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth inning. Todd Brunclik (So, Birchwood) and Endreas each reached on infield singles. Nielson singled in a run and Foreman topped off the inning with a two-run double to right center.

Foreman drove in his fourth run of the game in the seventh inning and Jason Kuehn's (Jr, Augusta) groundout finished up the scoring. Huiting faced only the minimum number of batters in the final four innings.

Foreman went 3-for-4 in the game to power his four RBI attack. Nielson had two RBIs, in going 3-for-5, and scored three runs. Endreas was also 3-for-5 and scored three runs. Brunclik finished at 2-for-5.

For the Warhawks, Endl was 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Eric Stangel was also 3-for-4.

Whitewater scored five runs in the seventh inning of the second game to end the game on the 10-run rule. Eric Baldwin provided much of the damage for the Warhawks, jacking two home runs and finishing with five RBI. Warhawk pitcher Greg Reinhard held Stout to four hits.

BALL FLIES OUT OF NELSON FIELD, BLUE DEVILS SPLIT WITH SAINTS

MENOMONIE
- In a doubleheader that featured 12 total home runs, UW-Stout split the pair of games with St. Scholastica, winning the opener, 19-13, but losing the nightcap, 11-7, Tuesday, April 6 at Nelson Field.

In the first game, Stout, trailing 13-8, sent 17 batters to the plate in the sixth inning in an 11-run outburst that was started when Nate Stafford (Jr, Eau Claire) advanced to first on a dropped third strike.

Two batters later, Todd Brunclik (So, Rice Lake) hit a three run home run to get the scoring started. Jim Foreman (Sr, Apple Valley, Minn), Tim Nielsen (So, Rosemount, Minn), and Luke Schultz (Fr, Menomonie) each drove in a run, while Jake Riek (Sr, Boyceville) drove in two runs with a double, Corey Endreas (Sr, Spencer) had a two-run single and Brunclik walked in a run.

The Blue Devils (2-13) got the scoring going with a five run first inning. Riek and Greg Meinertz (Jr, La Crosse) each homered.

St. Scholastica (16-3) cut the lead with a three run second, and tied the game in the fifth inning, then took an 11-7 lead on a grand slam by Josh Wettlaufer. The Saints built that to 13-8 before the Blue Devils went wild in the sixth.

Meinertz and Brunclik finished the game with two home runs, with Brunclik driving in five runs. Riek was 3-for-5 on the game with four RBI. Nielsen was 2-for-3 with three RBI. Nick Jones (Sr, La Crosse) was the beneficiary of the flying ball, picking up the win in two innings of relief.

The home run parade continued into the second game with the Saints hitting three home runs. Stout's Meinertz hit the Blue Devils' only round tripper, a two-run shot in the third to pull Stout to 4-3. The teams traded single runs in the fourth.

St. Scholastica tacked on three in the sixth and Stout pulled to within 8-5 in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice fly by Riek. The Saints added three more in the seventh to run out to a 11-5 lead.

Nielsen drove in two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but the Blue Devils left the bases loaded.

Meinertz and Nielsen each were 2-for-4 with two RBI.
