BLUE DEVILS COME BACK FROM HALFTIME DEFICIT, WIN BIG

MENOMONIE
- UW-Stout held UW-Whitewater to only six points over the first 10 minutes of the second half to overcome an 11-point halftime deficit and Stout went on to an 87-62 win, Saturday, Feb. 21 at Johnson Fieldhouse.

The Blue Devils (17-8, 10-6) forced 20 second half Whitewater (9-16, 5-11) turnovers and made the Warhawks pay, going on a 28-6 run in the first 10 minutes of the period.

The Blue Devils, who were behind by as much as 16 points in the first half, took the lead, 47-46, at 14:21 in the second half on a jumper by Sara Kahl (Sr, Menomonie) and never trailed again. Stout, using a full court press, ran up a 13-point lead, 59-46, at 9:39 before Whitewater scored again a minute later. The lead never got to less than 10 points again.

Lindsey Erichsen (Jr, Spring Valley, Minn) scored 16 points in the second half to lead Stout's charge, and finished the game with a team-high 21points. Erin Churchill (Jr, Plum City) scored 13 of her 15 points in the second half. Laura Verdegan (Sr, Tony) finished with 12 points and Kahl 10.

Nya Geschke was a big reason the Warhawks jumped out to a first half lead. The junior post player went to the free throw line 15 times in the first half, and nailed all 15. She was perfect on the night, hitting all 20 charity shots to finish with a game-high 29 points, 19 in the first half. Julie Nommensen added 13 points for the Warhawks.

Neither team hit well from the floor in the first half, with Whitewater hitting 38 percent of their shots and Stout 26 percent. With Geschke's free throws, the Warhawks were a perfect 22-of-22 from the line, and finished dropping in 28-of-32.

BLUE DEVILS WIN ROUGH CONTEST WITH WHITEWATER

MENOMONIE
- The nets should have been made out of chain. The court, asphalt. The key stat should be how many bruises did you come out of the game with.

UW-Stout shot out to an 8-0 start and never trailed as the Blue Devils survived UW-Whitewater, 76-56, Saturday, Feb. 21 at Johnson Fieldhouse.

The Warhawks (20-5, 11-5), who were in a three-way tie for first place, did not make a shot from the floor until the 12:54 mark of the first half to cut the Stout lead to 13-3.

Terry Farmer (Fr, Kenosha) led Stout (14-10, 8-8) in the first half as he scored 11 of his career-high 18 points before halftime. Stout built up an 18-14 lead with three minutes remaining and held a 32-24 halftime lead.

Jeff Vandenberghe (Sr, Coon Rapids, Minn) and Nate Templer (Sr, Beaver Dam), playing before the home crowd for probably the final time, took over in the second half.

Vandenberghe finished the game with a game-high 22 points, 14 in the second half, and Templer finished with 20 points, 16 in the second half.

The Blue Devils went on a 14-0 run starting with 9:09 left in the game, and never let the lead slip below 14 points after that.

Whitewater was led by Matt Jones with 12 points, and Melvin Williams came off the bench for 10 points.

The Warhawks finished with 23 fouls, while Stout committed 17. Stout made 24-of-29 free throws, while Whitewater knocked down 15-of-21.

With the win, combined with UW-Platteville's loss to UW-River Falls, the Blue Devils tied the Pioneers for fourth place. But the Pioneers earn the fourth seed and Stout will play at Platteville, Tuesday, Feb. 24. The two teams tied during the season, and Platteville wins the second tiebreaker - record against teams that finished above them. Platteville was 2-4, while Stout was 1-5.

BLUE DEVILS OME UP SHORT IN OVERTIME LOSS TO FALCONS

RIVER FALLS - After UW-Stout took a three-point lead very early in the overtime period, UW-River Falls made three consecutive 3-point shots and went on to take a 64-61 win, Tuesday, Feb. 17 at River Falls.

With the score tied at 51-51, Stout (13-10, 7-8) had a chance to win the game in regulation, but a shot by Jeff Vandenberghe (Sr, Coon Rapids, Minn) was blocked by the Falcons' Rich Melzer. Nate Templer (Sr, Beaver Dam) grabbed the rebound, but could not sink the shot.

Stout was led by Vandenberghe with 14 points. Luke Loney (So, River Falls) scored 12 points. Templer scored eight points, but pulled down 10 rebounds and, defensively, held down Melzer, the preseason Division III player of the year, to 14 points.
