January 10, 2004BLUE DEVILS EDGE PAST PLATTEVILLE, 61-60 MENOMONIE - Sara Kahl (Sr, Menomonie) connected on the front end of a free throw with 12 seconds to give UW-Stout all the margin they would need as the Blue Devils hung on to down UW-Platteville, 61-60, Saturday, Jan. 10 at Johnson Fieldhouse. When Kahl missed the second half of her free throw chance, the Pioneers' Tiff Flesch pulled down the rebound. The Pioneers took a time out and set up a shot for Angie Sisson, who missed the shot at the buzzer. The Pioneers (8-5, 4-2), who were coming off 78-61 pounding of No. 1 ranked UW-Stevens Point earlier in the week, sliced away at a Stout seven point, 57-50, lead late in the second half. The Pioneers hit seven free throws in the assault. Sisson connected on four free throws, Shannon Boatman two charity shots and Emily Adrian accounted for a bucket and two free throws. Stout (9-5, 2-3) scored only from the line in the final 5-minutes, 37-seconds of the game, with Erin Churchill (Jr, Plum City) connecting on two, Jenny McDermid (Fr, Oconto) one and Kahl the final one. The story was the same in the first half as the Pioneers chopped away at an 11 point lead to tie the game at 32 all at halftime. The Pioneers held a commanding lead at the line, hitting 26-of-38 free throws. The Pioneers needed the line work, making only 15-of-50 shots from the floor, and 4-of-13 from 3-point range. Stout didn't do much better, hitting 32 percent (23-of-72) from the floor, but only 2-of-17 from 3-point range. Stout hit only 13-of-22 free throws. No one had big numbers from either team. Stout's Kahl and Laura Verdegan (Sr, Tony) led all scorers with 14 points. Kahl picked up the double-double with 13 rebounds. Churchill added 13 points. The Pioneers got 11 points from Sisson and 10 each from Adrian and Boatman. Stout will be at UW-La Crosse, Tuesday, Jan. 13 and at UW-Whitewater, Saturday, Jan. 17. January 6, 2004BLUE DEVILS PICK OFF SCORING RECORD IN DOWNING SAINTS MENOMONIE - UW-Stout scored a school record 111 points as the Blue Devils knocked off St. Scholastica, 111-69, Tuesday, Jan. 6 in a non-conference contest at Johnson Fieldhouse.Stout (8-5) set the tone early, forcing three turnovers in the first minute of play, but had trouble taking advantage of the Scholastica miscues, holding only a five point lead, 26-21 with 9:16 left in the half. Up to that point, St. Scholastica (0-10) had already committed 10 turnovers and finished the game with 38 turnovers. Then the Blue Devils kicked into high gear, going on a 27-5 run, punctuated by Sara Kahl's (Sr, Menomonie) 11 points during the run. Stout's lead never slipped under 20 points for the rest of the game. Kahl led the way with 23 points, 17 in the first half. Molly Hendricks (So, Blaine, Minn) knocked down 16 points, 11 in the first half when she was a perfect 3-for-3 from 3-point range. Laura Verdegan (Sr, Tony) added 12 points and Lindsey Erichsen (Jr, Spring Valley, Minn) tossed in 10 points. Bonnie Thoe (Sr, Hayfield, Minn) came off the bench to grab 10 rebounds. Stout shot 46 percent for the game - 55 percent in the second half as they pulled away. Stout took advantage off the glass, grabbing 54 rebounds to 34 for St. Scholastica. Second-chance shots - particularly in the first half - were the Blue Devils' lifeblood as they yanked down 30 offensive rebounds, 19 in the first stanza. The Saints got 20 points from Jen Kne, 11 points from Jackie Plesha and Nicole Hissa and 10 points from Heather Saralampi. Stout came into the game with a six game losing streak to the Saints, stretching back to the early 1980s. Stout last defeated St. Scholastica during the 1981-82 season, a 57-46 decision. Scholastica started their dominance during the 1983-84 season with a 64-49 decision. The Saints now lead the series, 6-3. The 111 points broke a mark of 110 points set on Jan. 9, 2002, against UW-Superior. Freshman Leah Johnson (Osseo) hit a jumper with 24 seconds remaining for the record points. Johnson finished the night with eight points.
January 10, 2004STRONG DEFENSIVE EFFORT PUSHES STOUT OVER PLATTEVILLE MENOMONIE - Playing without one of their top defensive players, UW-Stout dug deep and came up with a defensive gem in downing UW-Platteville, 62-45, Saturday, Jan. 10 at Johnson Fieldhouse.Senior post player Nate Templer (Beaver Dam) was out due to an eye injury, but freshman Jacob Nonemacher (Kalispell, Mont) came off the bench to take Templer's spot. Nonemacher responded with his second consecutive double-double, scoring 13 points and 11 rebounds, and nearly had a triple double, recording eight blocked shots, four in the first half as the Blue Devils (9-4, 3-2) surged to a 32-23 halftime lead. Nonemacher scored 11 first half points. Senior swing player Jeff Vandenberghe (Coon Rapids, Minn) took over in the second half, scoring 15 of his game-high 23 points in the stanza. The Blue Devils forced 16 Platteville turnovers, recording 11 steals, with Nonemacher nabbing three, as did guard Greg Chaisson (So, Minneapolis, Minn). Stout also blocked 15 shots, with Nate Severson (So, Eau Claire) getting three and Terry Farmer (Fr, Kenosha) two. The Pioneers (7-6, 3-3) cut into Stout's halftime lead, holding Stout to two points over the first nearly five minutes as Platteville tied the score at 34-34 with 15:32 left in the contest. Both teams were scoreless for the next two minutes until Vandeberghe gave Stout a 36-34 lead, only to see Platteville tie for the final time of the game on a dunk by LeVon Crawford. Stout slowly edged ahead, going out to a 41-38 lead by hitting five free throws. Following a three minute scoring drought by both teams, Vandenberghe was matched by Crawford, but a Vandenberghe 3-pointer gave Stout a 46-40 lead. The Pointers threatened again, cutting the lead to three points, 46-43 at 4:19, but a Vandenberghe free throw and a 3-pointer a minute later catapulted Stout to a 15-2 run to end the game. Platteville, which was coming off a 63-60 win over No. 2 nationally ranked UW-Stevens Point Wednesday, were led by Crawford with 14 points. Brandon Temperly scored 11 points before fouling out. Stout will be at UW-La Crosse, Wednesday, Jan. 14 and at UW-Whitewater, Saturday, Jan. 17.
