BLUE DEVILS WIN SEASON OPENING BARNBURNER

KALAMAZOO, Mich
- UW-Stout's Lindsey Erichsen (Jr, Spring Valley, Minn) sunk two free throws with 40 seconds left and Sara Kahl (Sr, Menomonie) stole the ball with two ticks left on the clock to seal a 65-64 season opening win over Denison University at the Kalamazoo Tournament, Friday, Nov. 21.

Denison held a slight lead through the first 10 minutes of the game, but Stout took the lead midway through the first half and carried a 34-29 lead into halftime.

The Blue Devils went on an 8-0 run to open the second half to take a 42-32 lead. Denison slowly chipped away at the lead throughout the half, eventually taking the lead, 60-59, with two minutes left in the contest. The lead changed hands five times in the last two minutes as Kahl matched Denison's Emma Woodward free throw for free throw, shot for shot until Erichsen was fouled and canned the game winners.

Stout's Laura Verdegan (Sr, Tony) stole the ball, but Stout immediately turned the ball over. Denison worked for the shot, but Woodward missed a jumper with the rebound going to Erichsen with nine seconds left. Erichsen missed the free throw, Woodward grabbed the rebound, but Kahl stole the ball to seal the win.

Stout shot 43 percent in the first half, but cooled off considerably in the second half to finish shooting at 35 percent, connecting on 25-of-72 shots. Denison went the other way, hitting 35 percent in the first stanza, 46 percent in the second to finish hitting 23-of-57 for 41 percent. Stout held the advantage at the free throw line, connecting on 12-of-17 charity shots to 9-of-15 for Denison.

Kahl led Stout with 15 points, while freshman Savanah Oeltjen (Spring Valley, Minn) debuted with 13 points. Denison's Kristen Sheffield led all scorers with 19 points. Woodward finished with 16, Ann Staubach with 12 and Marisa Hard with 10.

BLUE DEVILS COME FROM BEHIND AGAIN FOR 5-4 WIN

MENOMONIE
- This coming from behind stuff is beginning to become a habit for UW-Stout as the Blue Devils took a 5-4 win over Bethel College, Saturday, Nov. 22 at the Dunn County Ice Arena.

Trailing 4-3 in the third period, Mike Mlynarczyk (Fr, Oakdale, Minn) knotted the score only two minutes into the third period, scoring unassisted.

Five minutes later, Rob Olszewski (Fr, Janesville) got the game winner, with an assist by Justin Huth (So, Apple Valley, Minn) and Stout hung on for the win, their fifth come-from-behind win of the season.

Stout (6-2-0) scored first in this contest when Bryan Cummings (Sr, Austin, Minn) scored only 2-minutes, 37-seconds into the game, with an assist by Mike Elm (So, Falcon Heights, Minn). But Bethel (0-5-1) scored two goals in the first before Stout tied the score just before the end of the period when Nate Legler (Sr, Lakeville, Minn) scored with assists by Cummings and Mlynarczyk.

Stout jumped out to a 3-2 lead eight minutes into the second period on an unassisted goal by Elm. Bethel tied the score only 30 seconds later and took the lead just before the second period break.

Stout, which is 3-0 at home this season and matched their wins total from last year, outshot the Royals, 52-32. Tim Elde (So, Grafton, N.D.) got the win, making 28 saves. Dustin Thompson took the loss making 47 saves.

BLUE DEVILS TAKE WILD 7-5 WIN AT HAMLINE

ST. PAUL, Minn
- UW-Stout outshot Hamline University 18-4 and scored three goals in the final period to take a hard-fought 7-5 nailbiting win over the Pipers, Friday, Nov. 21.

Trailing 5-4 to the winless Pipers coming into the final stanza, Todd Wynia (Fr, Minneapolis, Minn) scored shorthanded 34 seconds into the period to knot the score at 5 apiece.

Mitch Kellin (Sr, Cohasset, Minn) put the Blue Devils (5-2-0) ahead for good with an unassisted goal at the seven minute mark, then got the empty net goal to complete the hat trick with eight seconds remaining in the game to seal the win.

The Pipers (0-5-0) jumped all over Stout early in the first period, getting two goals in the first seven minutes of the game. The Blue Devils tied the score in the next five minutes on goals by Andy Wiesner (Fr, Rochester, Minn) scored unassisted and Justin Huth (So, Apple Valley, Minn), with an assist by Rob Olszewski (Fr, Janesville).

ANDERSON, BUNDGAARD NAMED WIAC PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

MENOMONIE
- With a commanding offensive presence, as well as a commanding defensive presence in UW-Stout's 42-14 win over UW-Platteville, it comes as no real surprise that two Blue Devils earned Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) player of the week honors, Nov. 18.

Steve Anderson (Sr, Stanley/Stanley-Boyd) had three interceptions for the Blue Devils and Luke Bundgaard (Sr, Weyerhaeuser/Bruce) carried the ball 53 times for 328 yards and four touchdowns in the win.

Anderson saved his best for last. Cast into a starting role against the pass-happy UW-Platteville Pioneers, Anderson responded on Senior Day with three interceptions, of which two set up eventual Stout scores.

Two of Anderson's interceptions also came as the Pioneers were threatening to score, once at the Stout 2, and another at the Stout 16, which Anderson returned 18 yards to improve field position. The three interceptions, coupled with a fourth earlier in the season, put Anderson in a tie for third in the WIAC statistics.

Bundgaard became the all-time leading rusher in WIAC history with his performance Nov. 15. Bundgaard came into the game needing 275 yards to snap the conference mark of 4375 yards set by Darrell Sourhada of UW-Eau Claire from 1998-2001. Bundgaard had 158 yards by the end of the first half, then broke the mark early in the fourth quarter and finished his four-year career with 4427 total rushing yards.

Along the way, Bundgaard broke or tied four of his own school records. Bundgaard scored four touchdowns, tying his own school record, and broke the following records: single season rushing record at 1461 yards (was 1366), single games carries record with 53, which was 45, and the single season carries record with 294, which was 270.

TEN BLUE DEVILS NAMED TO ALL-WIAC FOOTBALL TEAM

MENOMONIE
- Three UW-Stout football players were unanimous picks to the 2003 All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) football team as 10 Blue Devils in all were named to the honor squad.

Running back Luke Bundgaard (Sr, Weyerhaeuser/Bruce), offensive lineman Ben Knepper (Sr, Rice Lake) and defensive back Kevin Dewey (Sr, Burnsville, Minn) were unanimous picks. Defensive lineman Joe Kersten (Sr, Menasha/Fox Valley Lutheran) joined the trio as a first team all-conference selection.

Defensive lineman Matt Mueller (Sr, Chaska, Minn), fullback Matt Schaeuble (Jr, Wrightstown) and offensive linemen Mike Klieforth (Sr, Abbotsford) and Josh Towner (Sr, La Crosse/Onalaska) were second team picks.

Offensive lineman Adam Spiegel (Sr, West Bend) and quarterback Nick Ohman (Jr, Glenwood City) were tabbed as honorable mention.

Bundgaard owns the rushing portion of the Blue Devil record book, holding every rushing record at Stout.

Bundgaard started the season alternating the tailback spot with Ryan Englebert (So, Sturgeon Bay), but when Englebert was injured in a season-ending automobile accident, Bundgaard again became the featured back. On the season, Bundgaard carried the ball 294 times for 1461 yards, both single season records, and was second in the league in rushing. He scored 12 touchdowns for 72 points. Against UW-Platteville, Bundgaard carried the ball 53 times for 328 yards, only seven yards short of his own single game school record.

Bundgaard, who was named first team for the third time, also broke into the WIAC record book, snapping the all-games career rushing record by tallying 4427 total yards. Bundgaard finished his career with 240 total points.

Knepper, a preseason All-America and repeat first team all-conference selection, was a large part - literally - of Bundgaard's success. The 6-foot, 4-inch, 305-pound tackle led the way many times for Bundgaard. The Blue Devils averaged 440.1 total yards per game for an average of 5.5 yards per play. The Blue Devil rushing game accounted for a school record 235.9 yards per game at a 4.4 yard per carry clip.

Dewey, an honorable mention pick as a sophomore, stepped into a starting role at strong safety as a true freshman, and did not relinquish the spot, starting all 40 games.

Dewey led the team in tackles this season, tallying 76 total tackles and 50 solo. He had five tackles for losses, four sacks, five pass break-ups, one fumble recovery and forced two fumbles. Dewey wrapped up his career with 11 interceptions.

Kersten is a jarring tackler who led the team in tackles for loss with 14 for 52 yards. Of those 14 tackles, seven were sacks for 43 yards, a team-high. Kersten finished the year with 47 tackles, 24 solo. Kersten had perhaps his finest game when he chased down UW-River Falls' elusive runners from side to side to rack up 13 tackles.

Kersten, a four-year starter, has had the NFL scouts streaming to Menomonie, where he is being looked as a potential offensive lineman. Kersten has been listed as the top small school defensive tackle prospect for this spring's NFL draft by football.com.

Klieforth transferred to Stout from Minnesota State (Mankato) for his senior year, and the 6-6, 325-lb stepped right in.

Despite a broken wrist midway through the season, Towner did not miss a start at center. Towner was the team's most valuable offensive lineman the last two years.

Schaeuble makes his second appearance as an all-conference pick. While primarily a blocking back, Schaeuble rushed for 106 yards, but was perhaps the deadliest coming out of the backfield for the pass. Schaeuble finished second on the team in receptions with 18, tallying 166 yards and one TD.

Mueller was the Blue Devils' run stuffer who has now earned his third all-conference award. Mueller finished the season with 34 tackles, 22 solo, with nine tackles for losses of 39 yards, and three sacks.

Ohman seemed to always find a way to move the ball, whether by handing off, pitching on the option or throwing downfield. Ohman rushed for 372 yards on 112 carries and six TDs. Ohman completed 130-of-262 passes for 1981 yards and 18 passing TDs. Ohman scattered only five interceptions and had a quarterback efficiency rating of 131.99.

Speigel was named after a career that started at tight end, but was moved to the offensive line as a sophomore. Beginning as a 202-lb freshman, Spiegel grew into a 280-lb guard.

The Blue Devils finished the season at 6-4 overall, 4-3 in the WIAC.

BLUE DEVIL SOCCER EARNS TEAM ACADEMIC AWARD

MENOMONIE
- The UW-Stout women's soccer team has received the NSCAA Women's Collegiate Team Academic Award.

A total of 336 intercollegiate soccer programs (71 men, 265 women) posted a team grade point average of 3.0 or higher, thereby earning the NSCAA Team Academic Award for the 2002-03 school year.

UW-Stout, coached by Dave Morris, posted a team GPA of 3.15 for the 2002-03 academic year.

Of that total, 48 schools had both their men’s and women’s programs recognized, including 23 schools that received double honors for the second consecutive year. Of the 48 schools that had both teams receiving the award, seven have the same coach for both the men’s and women’s teams: Anderson University (Scott Fridley), Carleton College (Bob Carlson), Emmanuel College (Jimmy Stephens), Macalester College (John Leaney), Mount Union College (Scott Langone), Piedmont College (Jason P. Smith) and Urbana University (Jim Wendling).

THREE BLUE DEVILS NAMED TO ALL-WIAC SOCCER TEAM

MENOMONIE
- Three UW-Stout players were named to the 2003 All-Wisconsin Interecollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Women's Soccer Team.

Defender Diane Ehlen (Sr, Bloomington, Minn), midfielder Carrie Schrank (Jr, Reedsburg) and Shannon Hermes (Fr, Prior Lake, Minn) were all named to the team for the first time.

Ehlen was a four year starter and was a key cog in the Blue Devils' defensive success this season that ranked 25th in the NCAA Division III. The Blue Devils allowed a school low 12 goals and notched 10 shutouts.

Coming back off an ACL injury in the 2002 season, Ehlen scored three goals, many of them coming off corner kicks when she parked herself in front of the goal, and two assists.

"Diane just had a dream season," head coach Dave Morris said. "She has always been the lynchpin in the back for us the last couple of years. She is commanding as a central defender. She is just a lot of fun to watch. She is tuxedo-smooth."

Schrank was the deliverer of the majority of the corner kicks. Schrank finished the season with a school record 19 assists, second in the NCAA Division III in numbers, but first in assists per game with 1.12. Schrank missed two games due to a death in the family. Schrank also scored five goals. Schrank was a force in the middle of the field, Morris said.

"Carrie is as good as anyone in the conference," Morris said. "She was just dominating in the air. Carrie requires other teams to adjust. Other teams have to try to match-up with her."

Hermes started only a few games, but became that spark off the bench to help deliver Stout's most explosive offense ever. Hermes tied the school record for most goals in a season (14), most goals in a game (4) and most points in a season (14/5).

"Shannon hit the ground running as a freshman," Morris said. "She benefitted from Kelly (Stolarczyk) attracting a lot of attention. Her ability to get forward to score and back to defend got her noticed."

As a team, Stout scored 61 goals, far eclipsing the mark of 37 goals scored n 2000. The Blue Devils finished the season with a best-ever 12-7 overall record, 4-4 in the WIAC.
