November 10, 2003BLUE DEVILS WRAP UP SEASON BY HOSTING PLATTEVILLE UW-Stout Blue Devils (5-4, 3-3) vs. UW-Platteville Pioneers (3-6, 1-5) Saturday, Nov. 15, 1 p.m.Don & Nona Williams Stadium, Menomonie, Wis. ON THE LINE: The season culminates for both UW-Stout and UW-Platteville. The Blue Devils will attempt to break the checkerboard winning-loss pattern of winning one, then losing the next one. Stout has already assured themselves of a .500 or above record, running that streak to four seasons, only the second time in Stout football history. The Blue Devils accomplished that feat five consecutive times from 1978-82. Stout running back Luke Bundgaard is on track to become the second leading rusher in WIAC history. Bundgaard could surpass the mark of 4,105 yards set by Lee Weigel of UW-Eau Claire. Bundgaard currently has 4,099 career rushing yards. LAST TIME OUT: Stout: UW-Stout won a wild contest at UW-Eau Claire, downing the Blugolds, 43-36, Nov. 8. Trailing 36-35 with 37 seconds remaining, quarterback Nick Ohman found a wide-open Seth Mattison for a 55-yard pass to the Blugold 4-yard line. Two plays later, Luke Bundgaard scored with eight seconds remaining for his third TD of the game. After the Blue Devils scored on the 2-point conversion, Stout's Tony Fitts batted down the last ditch pass attempt in the end zone as time expired. Platteville: The Pioneers, playing without standout senior quarterback Tom Stetzer, who broke his hand two weeks ago, were pounded by UW-Stevens Point, 55-21, in their final home game of the season. The Pointers led 26-7 at halftime, but the Pioneers cut the deficit to 33-21 in the third quarter. The Pointers scored three more times in the game, including a TD with 12 seconds left. Platteville quarterback Brent Nelson completed 23-of-52 passes for 205 yards, with nine passes going to Jason Leonard for 99 yards. LAST SEASON: Stout and Platteville are members of the eight-team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). Last season, Stout was 7-3 overall, 4-3 (tied for third with Stevens Point and Whitewater) in the WIAC. Platteville was 2-7 overall, 1-6 (8th) in the WIAC. THE SERIES: Platteville holds a 28-17-1 lead in the series that began in 1935. Stout has won three of the last five meetings, but Platteville took last year's 34-31 overtime win at Platteville. The game was tied 21-21 heading into the fourth quarter and both teams scored with Stout scoring from one yard out with 5:09 left in the game. Platteville tied the score on a 44-yard TD pass from Tom Stetzer to Matt Kent with three minutes remaining. Stout got a field goal in overtime, but the Stetzer-to-Kent combination hooked up again for the winning 14-yard pass play. Bundgaard, who owns all of the Blue Devils rushing records, currently has 4,099 career rushing yards. Bundgaard would need 275 yards to break the all-time WIAC rushing record set by Darrell Sourhada of Eau Claire, who has 4373 rushing yards. UW-Whitewater's Chad Wurth currently has 4,089 career rushing yards. Bundgaard is also the Blue Devils' scoring leader with 216 points, all coming on his 36 touchdowns. STOUT COACH ED MEIERKORT SAYS: "(About Eau Claire game) Our guys hung in there the whole time. We made a lot of big plays, both offensively and defensively. It was our ability to run the ball, then Nick (Ohman) made some big plays down the stretch. It was exciting to win, but would have been disappointing to lose."This is our seniors' last game and a chance to finish in the top half of the conference. Our guys understand the urgency. We will have to establish the run early. The key will be up front offensively." RADIO: WMEQ 880 AM, Jake Bostrom, Steve Schrantz; All games are broadcast live over the Internet at www.wmeq.comNovember 8, 2003BLUE DEVILS WIN THRILLER OVER EAU CLAIRE, 43-36EAU CLAIRE - Luke Bundgaard (Sr, Weyerhaeuser) scored with eight seconds remaining to lift UW-Stout to a 43-36 win over arch-rival UW-Eau Claire, Saturday, Nov. 8 at Carson Park. Trailing 36-35 as the clock ticked off, quarterback Nick Ohman (Jr, Glenwood City) connected on a 55-yard pass play with Seth Mattison (Jr, Byron, Minn) to bring the ball down to the Eau Claire 4-yard line with 16 seconds left, setting up Bundgaard's score. The game was a back-and-forth affair the entire way. Stout (5-4, 3-3) opened the scoring midway through the first quarter when Bundgaard scored his first of three TDs, a 16-yard scamper. Eau Claire answered back on a 4-yard Joe Gast blast with 14:50 on the second quarter clock, then took the lead eight minutes late when Don Kahl hauled in a 10 yard pass from quarterback Nels Fredrickson. The Blue Devils knotted the score just before halftime, driving 80 yards in 11 plays as Bundgaard scored his second TD. An Ohman 2-point conversion run put the score at 15-15, heading into halftime. Stout drove 80 yards in 14 plays in a 6-minutes, 22-second drive, capped off by an 8-yard Ohman run. As methodically as Stout drove the ball down the field, the Blugolds (4-5, 3-3) scored in dramatic fashion. Following a 31-yard kickoff return by Erik Ferguson, Fredrickson hooked up with Matt Evenson on a 49-yard play to tie the score at 22-22 midway through the third period. Neither team scored again in the third, but fireworks would erupt in the fourth as the team's scored five TDs. The fireworks started as a Stout penalty put the ball on their own 37 following a punt return by the Blugolds' Derek Sikora. On the next play, Rick Morris (Sr, Crestview, Fla) - who earlier in the season had torn an ACL - intercepted Fredrickson and returned the ball 61 yards for the score and a Stout 29-22 lead 58 seconds into the final quarter. Again, the Blugolds didn't need long to answer as Fredrickson tossed to Kahl for passes of 17- and 23-yards, and Gast ran for 22 yards, then got the score from a yard out. Point after is good, and the score is tied at 29-29 with 12:07 left on the clock. Stout would then dodge a couple of bullets. Stout gave up a fumble on a punt return, but a Blugolds' field goal was wide left. Ohman fumbled at the Eau Claire 22 on the ensuing drive and Eau Claire took over. Two plays later, Fredrickson was picked off by Luke Rykal (Jr, Cadott), who ran 19 yards to paydirt and, after a missed extra point, Stout held a 35-29 lead. Eau Claire needed only seven plays to score again. Fredrickson worked the 69-yard drive by passing for 35 yards and rushing for 17 yards, including a 10-yard TD. Eau Claire took the 36-35 lead with 37 seconds left on a successful extra point conversion. Rykal returned the kickoff 21 yards to the Stout 41 with 32 seconds remaining and, following an incomplete pass, Ohman found Mattison, who had completely separated from the Eau Claire secondary, for the 55-yard pass play. Two plays later, Bundgaard scored, and Ohman hit Mattison for the two-point conversion and a 43-36 lead. Fredrickson completed a pass, but his final pass with one second remaining fell incomplete. Bundgaard carried the ball 37 times for 137 yards, running his career rushing total to 4,099 yards. Bundgaard, in pursuit of a WIAC career rushing record, trails Eau Claire's Lee Weigal by six yards for second place in most career rushing yards in all games. Weigal, who ran rampant for the Blugolds from 1982-85, had 4,105 career yards. Ohman finished the day with 107 yards on 19 carries and completed 13-of-24 passes for 198 yards as Stout had 459 total yards, 261 rushing. Mattison had two catches for 66 yards. Fredrickson had a big day, connecting on 20-of-38 passes for 295 yards and two TDs, but did have three interceptions, including a first half pick by Tony Fitts (Fr, Kewaskum). Ferguson hauled in 11 passes for 138 yards and Evenson had three catches for 80 yards. Eau Claire tallied 430 yards, 135 rushing. Stout will wrap up the season Saturday, Nov. 15 when they host UW-Platteville at 1 p.m. in the annual Senior Day game.
