STOUT COACH ED MEIERKORT SAYS: "When we beat our rival by that amount, and the way we beat them, I was surprised by their inability to come back, but not by our inability to dominate...(With the passing game) we were able to create some space, and teams that give us space will have trouble with us. We needed to get to their front seven by the pass, and that opened up the run, which opened up the pass. Nick (Ohman) played so well early on, and our receivers played very well. "The Tommies are a senior-laden offense that has been scoring a lot of points. We will have to step up our defensive game against them. We're not changing, it's just how many times we can knock the quarterback down. Their (defensive) front is three smaller guys that can run around well, along with one bigger guy. We will need to control the line of scrimmage early, or it is going to be a long day. St. Thomas is a well-coached team that traditionally have a seven or eight win season, plus they are tough to beat at O'Shaughnessy Stadium." RADIO: WMEQ 880 AM, Jake Bostrom, Steve Schrantz; the game will also be broadcast live over the Internet at www.wmeq.com
September 21, 2002BLUE DEVILS DOMINATE EAU CLAIRE, 39-14, IN HOME OPENER
MENOMONIE - From top to bottom, UW-Stout dominated UW-Eau Claire in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) opener as the Blue Devils went on to a 39-14 win over the Blugolds at Don & Nona Williams Stadium, Saturday, Sept. 21.
The Blue Devils scored on their first five possessions of the game and ran out to a 26-0 lead before Eau Claire new what hit them.
What hit them was the Nick Ohman-led offense and a swarming Blue Devils defense.
Ohman, a sophomore quarterback from Glenwood City, threw for three first half touchdowns and the Blue Devils (2-0, 1-0) ran for two more. Ohman connected with Dan Austin (So, Clintonville) for two scores, a 14-yard pass play with 7:33 left in the first quarter and a 38-yard play with 6:05 left in the half. Ohman tossed another early in the second quarter, a 23-yard fade to Matt Sprester (Jr, Clear Lake).
Luke Bundgaard (Jr, Weyerhaeuser) opened the game, bulling in from two yards out, to cap off an 11-play, 73-yard drive with less than four minutes off the clock. Ryan Englebert (Fr, Sturgeon Bay) scored from two-yards out with 2:19 remaining in the first quarter.

Stout's defense held the Blugolds to no first downs until midway through the second quarter when a Stout penalty moved the chains for the first time for Eau Claire.
Bundgaard scored his second TD of the evening early in the third this one from 12-yards out. The score was set up when Eau Claire was lined up in punt formation, and punter Matt Brink took a high snap and was smothered by Jake Rider (Jr, Shiocton) for a 12-yard loss.
The Blugolds, who were ranked 13th in the first AFCA coaches poll, made the game look a little more respectable by adding a score late in the fourth quarter and tacking on 200 yards of offense late in the second half. Eau Claire threatened one last time but were stopped on the Stout 1 on fourth down.
