May 10, 2003THREE NAMED TO SOFTBALL ALL-REGION TEAM MENOMONIE - Three UW-Stout softball players were named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Great Lakes All-Region teams.First baseman Erin O'Connell (So, Altoona) was a first team choice, outfielder Kaela Wold (So, Altoona) was a second team pick and outfielder Kim Caswell (Jr, Stanley) was named to the third team. O'Connell, a first team all-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) pick, led the conference in home runs - and at one point led the NCAA Division III - shattering the old record of 10 by finishing with 15. O'Connell hit her home runs in streaks, hitting four in a doubleheader with UW-Superior, April 21, and added three in two games at the WIAC Cluster Tournament, April 29. O'Connell posted a slugging percentage of .950, and batted a team-high .407 (44-108). O'Connell racked up 39 runs batted in, and tacked on six doubles and three triples. O'Connell was nearly flawless in the outfield, committing only three errors in 386 chances for a single season school record fielding percentage of .992. Wold repeated as a first team all-conference player and hit at a .390 clip, going 46-for-118 with a team-high 26 runs scored and a team-high 40 RBI. Wold's 40 RBI lead the WIAC and also tied for the league lead in doubles with 14. Wold finished with four triples and six home runs to finish with a slugging percentage of .729. Caswell finished second in the WIAC in hits with 47 and finished with a career-high batting average of .376 (47-125). Caswell, who moved from the infield to the outfield this year, punched out eight doubles, three triples and one home run. The lead off hitter, Caswell scored 24 runs and led the team in stolen bases with eight in nine chances. Three WIAC players were named first team all-region, two second team and five third team. Stout finished the season at 17-20 overall, 7-9 in the WIAC. May 8, 2003STOUT'S SARA JENSEN NAMED TO ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM MENOMONIE - UW-Stout's Sara Jensen (Sr, Eau Claire) was named to the second team of the 2003 Verizon/CoSIDA Academic All-District Five College Division Softball team.Jensen, an early childhood education major with a grade point average of 3.867, was one of the Blue Devils' team captains for 2003. Jensen, a three year player for Stout, was a National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-America Scholar in 2002 and has been named to the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) honor roll three times. Jensen has volunteered her time to work with students in several of the Menomonie area elementary schools and with the local Title 1 program. Jensen saw action in 32 games as an outfielder or designated player, hitting .173. May 8, 2003FOUR NAMED TO WIAC SOFTBALL HONOR SQUAD MENOMONIE - Four UW-Stout players were named to the 2003 All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Softball Team.Kaela Wold (So, Altoona) and Erin O'Connell (So, Altoona) were named to the first team and Kim Caswell (Jr, Stanley) and Megan Donley (Fr, Fridley, Minn) were named honorable mention. Wold and O'Connell provided the Blue Devils with a one-two punch - make that three-four - in the line-up. The pair led the team in just about every offensive category. Donley made 32 appearances (second, WIAC), pitching 147.2 innings (third) and striking out 56, while allowing a best-ever 13 walks. Donley combined with Emily Zahn (Fr, Champlin, Minn) for a perfect game in a 13-0 win over Minnesota-Morris and finished the season with two saves (tied for second). Stout finished the season at 17-20 overall, 7-9 in the WIAC.
May 11, 2003ALL-CONFERENCE TEAM TO BE NAMED THIS WEEK MENOMONIE - The all-WIAC baseball team will be announced Thursday, May 15.
May 9, 2003MARCI SCHACHTNER BREAKS SCHOOL HAMMER RECORD LA CROSSE - Marci Schachtner (So, Deer Park) broke the UW-Stout hammer throw record in placing fourth in the event at the Leo Schnur Open at UW-La Crosse, Friday, May 9.Schachtner tossed the hammer an NCAA Division III provisional qualifying mark of 154-feet, 5-inches to break the record of 153-3 she set last year at the same meet. Schachtner also placed fourth in the discus (129-7).
May 9, 20034X100-RELAY TEAM HITS NCAA QUALIFYING MARK LA CROSSE - UW-Stout's 4x100-relay team hit the NCAA Division III qualifying mark and placed fourth at the Leo Schnur Open, Friday, May 9 at UW-La Crosse.The team of Brady Hurtgen (So, Ridgeland), Joe Seep (Fr, Reedsburg), Nate Templer (Jr, Beaver Dam) and Sam Werner (Sr, Elk Mound) clocked a time of 41.86 seconds. The 4x400-relay team also placed fourth (3:18.50). Lewis Cassellius (Jr, Glenwood City) was second in the pole vault (14-feet, 9-inches). Brian Anderson (Fr, Waunakee) hit two personal bests in the 110-hurdles, finishing at 15.10 seconds in the preliminaries and 14.97 seconds to place fifth in the finals. Updated: May 12, 2003 |
