BLUE DEVILS SPLIT WITH HAMLINE, WIN FIRST

MENOMONIE -
UW-Stout used the long ball in the first game, but couldn't string together enough hits in the second and went on to split a doubleheader with Hamline University on a cold, windy afternoon, Friday, April 18 at Wakanda Park.

The Blue Devils took the first game, 6-2, on the strength of a four-run fifth inning, but couldn't overcome six fifth inning Hamline runs to fall, 10-5, in the second half of the doubleheader.

With the score knotted 2-2 in the opener, the Blue Devils (13-14) pounded out four runs in the fifth inning, using power to bring in the runs on four hits. Scooter Aspen (Jr, Eau Claire) drove in a run with a double, Kaela Wold (So, Altoona) brought Aspen home with a home run and a few batters later, Courtney Zafft (Fr, Rochester, Minn) tripled in a run.

Hamline took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Stout cut the lead in half when Sara Jensen (Sr, Eau Claire) singled in a run. Stout tied the score in the third when Wold singled in Bethany Johnson (Fr, Black River Falls), who reached on a lead-off error.

Megan Donley (Fr, Fridley, Minn) recorded her 10th win of the season, going the distance, allowing no walks and getting one strikeout.

In the nightcap, the Blue Devils built a 2-0 lead when Wold drove in a run in the first and Johnson scored from third when a pick off play went errant.

The Pipers (20-5) took over with six runs in the fifth inning, going through three Stout pitchers, to take a 6-2 lead.

Stout cut the deficit to 6-5 on Erin O'Connell's (So, Altoona) three-run home run into the wind over the right field fence. The round tripper was O'Connell's eighth of the year, only one short of the school single season record.

But Hamline wasted no time taking control, getting those three runs back in the sixth and adding another in the seventh.

Stout will host UW-Superior, Monday, April 21 at 3 p.m. and will be UW-Eau Claire, Wednesday, April 23 at 4 p.m.

BLUE DEVILS SPLIT TWINBILL WITH RIVER FALLS

MENOMONIE -
UW-Stout took advantage of a UW-River Falls error to win game one, 2-1, of a conference doubleheader and the Falcons used back-to-back triples to secure the second game, 3-0, Tuesday, April 15, at Wakanda Park.

In the opener, with two outs in the third inning, Scooter Aspen (Jr, Eau Claire) hit a hard shot for Stout (12-13, 3-5) to first base that was backhanded off the glove, advancing Kim Caswell (Jr, Stanley) to third. Aspen stole second and Kaela Wold (So, Altoona) brought the pair home with a single to right field for all the runs Megan Donley (Fr, Fridley, Minn) would need to secure her ninth win of the season.

Donley allowed no walks and scattered six hits throughout the game.

The Falcons scored their lone run in the sixth inning.

In the nightcap, River Falls (12-14, 3-5) scored a single run in the fifth, then used two consecutive triples to set up two runs in the sixth.

Stout's best scoring opportunity came in the second inning when the Blue Devils stranded runners at second and third.

WHITEWATER HOLDS BLUE DEVILS NEARLY SCORELESS

WHITEWATER -
UW-Whitewater held UW-Stout to only one run over 18 innings of baseball as the Warhawks defeated the Blue Devils, 10-1, 8-0, Friday, April 18 at Whitewater.

Stout got their lone run of the day in the first inning of the first game - and that run was unearned.

Greg Meinertz (So, LaCrosse) led off the inning with a single, was moved to second by Nick Ohman's (So, Glenwood City) grounder to the pitcher, then advanced to third on an error. With the bases loaded, Justin Biever (Sr, South Milwaukee) brought Meinertz home on a fielder's choice.

Stout (5-20, 4-11) was held to six hits in the game - Meinertz collected three of those hits, going 3-for-4 - and allowed 14 Warhawk (21-4, 12-4) hits. Whitewater had big innings in the fifth when they broke the game open with three runs, then tagged on five runs in the seventh.

In the nightcap, Whitewater took advantage of two Stout errors and made the best of nine hits. Stout left only five runners on base. Their best chance of scoring came in the eighth inning when they left the bases loaded. Previous to that, only Jake Riek (Jr, Boyceville) got past first when he crushed a two-out double in the third.

Stout pitchers combined for 11 strikeouts, with Matt Hoeft (Sr, Elk Mound) getting five strikeouts in four innings of work. Hoeft was roughed up for four runs - two earned.

Stout will be at UW-LaCrosse, Wednesday, April 23 and at UW-Oshkosh, April 26-27.

WHITEWATER DOWNS BLUE DEVILS BY IDENTICAL 7-3 SCORES

WHITEWATER -
UW-Stout could not hold onto slim, early leads and lost two games to UW-Whitewater by identical 7-3 scores, Thursday, April 17 in Whitewater.

Seth Maier (Fr, Park Falls) gave Stout (5-18, 4-9) a 1-0 lead in the top of the first of the opener, but the Warhawks scored single runs in the second and third and never looked back.

In the nightcap, Whitewater (19-4, 10-4) took a 1-0 lead in the second, but Stout matched that in the third on a Greg Meinertz (So, La Crosse) double. The Blue Devils went ahead in the fourth on an RBI single by Brock Meyer (Sr, Lyle, Minn) to take a 2-1 lead.

Whitewater took advantage of a wild pitch, a passed ball and an error to notch three runs in the fourth, then tacked on two more in the fifth.

Getting hits hasn't been a problem for the Blue Devils since returning from their southern trip, and it wasn't a problem again today as Stout had nine hits in each game. Stringing hits together was a key as Stout stranded nine runners in the second game and three times left two runners on as the inning ended. The Warhawks' starting pitcher, Kevin Tomasiewicz, recorded 10 strikeouts.

Meinertz went 2-for-5 in the second game, while Meyer was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Meyer was 2-for-4 in the first game, as was Jim Foreman (Jr, Apple Valley, Minn).
