VERDEGAN SPARKS RUN AS BLUE DEVILS BLOW PAST WARHAWKS

MENOMONIE - Laura Verdegan (Jr, Tony)
scored eight points during a 18-3 run early in the second half to lift UW-Stout to an 83-66 win over UW-Whitewater, Saturday, Feb. 22 at Johnson Fieldhouse.

With Stout (18-7, 10-6) leading 46-38 with 14 minutes remaining, Verdegan got things going with a layup, and followed that up 25 seconds later with another.

Jesse Herrman (Jr, Barron) scored on a 3-point play, and it was off to the races for the Blue Devils, who built a lead up to a much as 25 points late in the game.

Verdegan led the Blue Devils in scoring, knocking down 21 points, 15 in the second half. Steffanie Nemitz (Fr, Bloomington) came off the bench to score 10 points.

Whitewater (11-13, 5-11) got 22 points from Cathy Rossi and 17 points from Leah Thyne.

Stout only trailed for a few seconds in the first half and took a 39-30 lead into the halftime locker room. Once Stout took a 10-point, 48-38 lead, Whitewater never got the score differential back in single digits.

Whitewater held a substantial advantage at the free throw line, knocking down 28-of-39 freebies, while Stout connected on 14-of-23. The difference came from the floor where the Stout defense allowed Whitewater to make only 17-of-44 shots. Stout hammered down 33-of-76 field goals.

Verdegan had two blocked shots, which pushed her ahead of Amy Zelinger for the school record in career blocked shots. Verdegan currently has 85 blocked shots over her three year career.

Stout will host UW-Platteville, Monday, Feb. 24 in the first round of the WIAC Tournament.

LINDSEY ERICHSEN GIVES BLUE DEVILS BIG HAND IN WIN

RIVER FALLS -
UW-Stout took care of business when they needed to and Lindsey Erichsen (So, Spring Valley, Minn) went a long way to assure that the Blue Devils kept their mind on their task as Stout downed UW-River Falls, 65-54, Wednesday, Feb. 19 in River Falls.

Erichsen scored 16 points and swept the glass for 16 rebounds - a Stout individual's highest rebounding total since 1998 - as the Blue Devils (17-7, 9-6) clinched a first round home playoff berth in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) tournament next week.

Stout ran off to a 36-23 halftime lead as neither team well to open the game. The Blue Devils held off the Falcons (10-12, 4-10) in spite of shooting only 37 percent in the second half and 35 percent from the floor for the game.

Steffanie Nemitz (Fr, Bloomington) added 11 points for Stout off the bench. Laura Verdegan (Jr, Tony) pulled down eight rebounds as Stout held a 54-38 advantage off the glass.

Erin Effle scored 17 points for River Falls and Chantele Melgaard added 16.

BLUE DEVILS LOSE BY A FINGERTIP TO WARHAWKS, 60-58

WHITEWATER -
After trailing by as much as 13 points in the second half, UW-Stout came ever so close, but dropped a 60-58 decision at UW-Whitewater, Saturday, Feb. 22.

After pulling to within 59-58 on a Nate Severson (Fr, Eau Claire) 3-pointer with 11 seconds remaining, Stout's Casey Chapman (Sr, Hartland) got a hand on the inbound pass, knocking it off a Whitewater player to give Stout (14-10, 9-7) the ball under their own basket.

But the Warhawks' (19-6, 11-5) Matt Jones stole the ball and Londen Donlow was fouled, and hit one free throw for the final score.

Trailing 49-36 with ninine minutes left in the game, Stout began to cut into the lead from the free throw line, cutting the deficit to 52-47 by making 11 straight free throws, three by Chapman, four by Nate Templer (Jr, Beaver Dam) and three by Julian Greer (Jr, St. Paul, Minn). A Chapman bucket pulled Stout to within 52-49 at 3:05.

The Warhawks kept Stout at bay from the line, scoring their final eight points on free throws.

Templer, who scored 12 second half points, dropped in two free throws to pull Stout to 57-55 with 1:17 remaining. The Warhawks' Danny Saunders gave Whitewater a four point cushion before Severson drained the 3-pointer.

Chapman led all scorers with 18 points. Templer finished with 14 points and 12 rebounds and Jeff Vandenberghe (Jr, Coon Rapids, Minn) added 10 points, all in the first half.

The Warhawks got 12 points from Jonathan Hodges and Jones, and 11 points from Aubrey Lewis-Byers and Donlow.

Both teams did not shoot well from the floor, with Stout connecting on 32 percent (18-of-57) of their shots, while Whitewater was 40 percent (20-of-50). The line was a different story with Stout nailing 95 percent (18-of-19) and Whitewater 80 percent (16-of-20).

The loss dropped Stout out of consideration for hosting a game in next week's Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) tournament. UW-River Falls defeated UW-Platteville, 78-72, in double overtime.

Stout will be seeded fifth and will play at fourth seeded UW-Oshkosh, Tuesday, Feb. 25.

RIVER FALLS BURNS BLUE DEVILS IN OVERTIME, 92-86

MENOMONIE -
The storybook ending was waiting to happen for UW-Stout. It didn't, and the Blue Devils lost a heartbreaking 92-86 overtime contest to UW-River Falls, Wednesday, Feb. 19 at Johnson Fieldhouse.

With four ticks left on the clock and Stout trailing 75-74, Barrington Smith (Sr, Oklahoma City, Okla) was fouled and sent to the line for two shots.

In Stout's 88-79 overtime win over the Falcons on Jan. 22, with Stout trailing by a point in regulation, Smith was fouled, but was injured on the play and couldn't go to the line. Instead Casey Chapman (Sr, Hartland) made one of the throws to send it into extra time and Stout went on to win.

This time around, Smith was there to shoot the throws, but he missed the first and hit the second to send the game into overtime. The Falcons scored the first five overtime points and never back looked to take the win.

Jeff Vandenberghe (Jr, Coon Rapids, Minn) cut the lead to two, 80-78, on a 3-pointer, but the Falcons (15-9, 9-6) pushed the lead back up and built it to six several times. River Falls made 10-of-12 free throws in the overtime.

Stout (14-9, 9-6) held a 41-32 halftime lead, but the Falcons trimmed the lead and went ahead for the first time at 14:58 in the second half, 50-49. The game waffled back and forth throughout the rest of regulation.

The loss was especially painful for the Blue Devils. A win would have assured Stout of their first ever Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) home playoff berth. A win at UW-Whitewater, Saturday, Feb. 22, could still give Stout the opportunity.

The Falcons' Rich Melzer led all scorers with 34 points and 11 rebounds. Brian Mathison added 17 points, Matt Kukla 14 and Jesse Lam 12.

Stout got 26 points and 14 rebounds from Andy Bray (Jr, Menominee, Mich), 14 points from Vandenberghe and 10 from Julian Greer (Jr, St. Paul, Minn). Nate Templer (Jr, Beaver Dam) filled out the stat sheet, scoring 11 points, grabbing 10 rebounds, five assists and five blocked shots.
