January 25, 2003BLUE DEVILS CAN'T FIND WAY TO GET AHEAD OF EAU CLAIRE MENOMONIE - UW-Stout could rarely find a way over the top and wound up losing a 74-61 decision at UW-Eau Claire, Saturday, Jan. 25. The Blue Devils (14-4, 6-3) led only at a few points in the game, and then it was never more than three points. But Stout was always close until late in the game with the Blugolds (17-1, 9-0) took a 10 point lead with five minutes remaining. Eau Claire got 28 points from Emily Planert off the bench as she outscored the entire Stout bench herself. Stout hurt themselves from the free throw line - both ways. Stout hit 14-of-26 opportunities, while the Blugolds nailed down 21-of-33 shots. Eau Claire also held a 47-40 advantage off the boards, with Brooke Wozniak pulling down 13. Where Eau Claire really won the rebounding battle was off the offensive rebounds where they pulled down 24 to Stout's 13, setting up numerous second shot opportunities. Laura Verdegan (Jr, Tony) led Stout with 12 points and seven rebounds. Sara Kahl (Jr, Menomonie) pulled down nine rebounds and scored eight points. Stout will be at UW-Stevens Point, Wednesday, Jan. 29, and will host UW-Oshkosh, Saturday, Feb. 1 at 3 p.m.January 22, 2003HALBACH, VERDEGAN POWER BLUE DEVILS OVER RIVER FALLS MENOMONIE - Tanya Halbach (Sr, Janesville) scored 23 points and Laura Verdegan (Jr, Tony) recorded a double-double with 13 points and a career-high 14 rebounds as UW-Stout defeated UW-River Falls 89-74 at Johnson Fieldhouse, Wednesday, Jan. 22. With the win, Stout (14-3, 6-2) stays in a second place tie in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) with UW-Stevens Point, which defeated UW-Oshkosh tonight to knock the Titans out of second. UW-Eau Claire stays on the top of the league. River Falls (9-7, 3-5) gave Stout a tussle throughout the game, leading through much of the first half. Stout turned the tables and led 43-40 at halftime. The two teams traded leads through the first part of the second half, racking up six tied scores before two free throws by Lindsey Erichsen (So, Spring Valley, Minn) put Stout up, 63-61, to stay with eight minutes to play. The Blue Devils went on a 21-2 run over the next three minutes, highlighted by seven points by Halbach and two 3-pointers by Jessie Herrman (Jr, Barron). The Falcons kept clawing, but never got closer than 11 points the rest of the way. Stout got 14 points from Herrman, nine in the second half, and 12 points from Erin Churchill (So, Plum City). Verdegan and Erichsen each blocked four shots and Verdegan, along with Herrman, finished with four steals. The Falcons were led by Erin Effle with 14 ponts, Christi Crews with 12 points, and 10 points apiece by Darcy Olsen and Lisa Bartsch. Stout controlled the boards for most of the evening, but needed to shooting only 35 percent. Stout hauled in 58 caroms to 45 for River Falls.
January 25, 2003BLUE DEVILS COME FROM BEHIND TO DOWN EC IN OT EAU CLAIRE - UW-Stout came back from 18 points behind to defeat UW-Eau Claire, 85-81 in overtime, Saturday, Jan. 25 at Zorn Arena in Eau Claire. With the win, Stout (12-5, 7-2) remains at least in a tie with UW-Whitewater, which defeated UW-Superior, 78-73 in overtime, and moves a half game ahead of idle UW-Stevens Point, who the Blue Devils will host, Wednesday, Jan. 29. The win was Stout's fourth overtime game, and Stout's fourth overtime game win, all on the road. Trailing most of the first 26 minutes of the game, Stout found themselves behind 49-31 at the 13:13 mark of the second half when Stout started to cut in the lead. Julian Greer (Jr, St. Paul, Minn) put down a dunk and followed that up with a free throw to start the run. The Blugolds (11-7, 3-6) did keep Stout at bay, but the whittling began as Greer pulled Stout to within nine points, 59-50, at the 8:52 mark. Eau Claire's Dan Archamabault gave the Blugolds a 12 point lead again, but Stout's Casey Chapman (Sr, Hartland) put it back to nine. A free throw by Eau Claire's Nate Beck would be all of the scoring for the Blugolds for the next three minutes as Stout went on a 9-0 run to pull to within one, 63-62, with 5:03 left in regulation. Eau Claire kept the lead on the strength of six straight free throws. Stout got their first lead of the half when Chapman gave the Blue Devils a 71-69 lead with 1:38 left. The teams traded free throws, but Beck tied the game with 13 seconds on the clock. Stout's Nate Templer (Jr, Beaver Dam) gave Stout a 74-72 lead with seven seconds remaining. Following two timeouts, Eau Claire's Casey Drake missed a shot, but Andy Witte followed up the miss to send the game into overtime. Drake made the first shot in overtime, but a 3-pointer by Stout's Luke Loney (Fr, River Falls) and a two-pointer by Templer gave Stout a 79-76 lead. Eau Claire missed three straight free throws, then Witte nailed a freebie and Beck tied the score at 79 all. Jeff Vandeberghe (Jr, Coon Rapids, Minn) pushed Stout back up and Greer gave Stout an 83-79 lead with two throws with 21 seconds left. Archambault cut the lead with two free throws with 14 seconds left, but Greer put the game away with two charity shots seconds later. Eau Claire's Archambault led all scorers with 21 points. Jason Larson, the Blugolds' leading scorer with 22 points, scored 16 points before fouling out. Witte added 16 points, and Beck finished with 14 points. Greer led Stout with 20 points. Templer notched a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Chapman finished with 18 points and Andy Bray (Jr, Menominee, Mich) had 11 points. Both teams hit 19 free throws, but Stout shot 83 percent at the line with 23 attempts, while Eau Claire shot 66 percent with 29 attempts. Eau Claire held a decided advantage on the boards, pulling down 40 boards to Stout's 29.January 22, 2003BLUE DEVILS WORK OVERTIME TO GET INTO FIRST PLACE TIE RIVER FALLS - UW-Stout inched their way into overtime, then overwhelmed UW-River Falls in the extra period on their way to an 88-79 win, Wednesday, Jan. 22 at River Falls. In the process, the Blue Devils (11-5, 6-2) find themselves in a three-way first place tie in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) with UW-Stevens Point, which lost 63-59, to UW-Oshkosh, and with UW-Whitewater, which beat UW-La Crosse, 74-58. Stout led for nearly the entire first half and half of the second half before the Falcons' leading scorer, Rich Melzer, went to work, scoring 19 second half points to pull the Falcons into the lead and built that to as much as seven points. A couple of 3-pointers by Casey Chapman (Sr, Hartland) kept Stout in contention in the final seven minutes. A jumper by Julian Greer (Jr, St. Paul, Minn) gave Stout a 60-59 lead with 5:38 left in the game, but a layup by Matt Kukla and two free throws by Melzer carried the Falcons to a 64-60 lead with 3:08 left. Nate Templer (Jr, Beaver Dam) cut the lead to one, 64-63, with a 3-pointer, but the Falcons (11-6, 5-3) shot out to a 67-63 lead on a free throw by Kevin Becker and a jumper by Melzer. Templer again cut the lead to one with his second 3-pointer of the night with 46 seconds remaining. Chapman went to the line with two seconds remaining, missed the first one, but made the second one to tie at 67-67 at the end of regulation. Nate Severson (Fr, Eau Claire) went to work for Stout in overtime. The freshman nailed down seven points - his only points of the night - in the first 2:30 of the overtime. Together with a Jeff Vandenberghe (Jr, Coon Rapids, Minn) bucket, Severson more than countered Melzer's four points. Chapman put Stout ahead 79-71 with a trey at 2:04. Stout would go on to seal the win at the line as Greer scored off a three-point play and two additional free throws and Chapman sunk all four of his charity shots. Melzer led all scorers with 34 points, including 10 points in overtime. Chapman was right behind, scoring a career-high 27 points for Stout. Andy Bray (Jr, Menominee, Mich) added 22 points for Stout, and Greer and Barrington Smith (Sr, Oklahoma City, Okla) each tossed in 13 points. River Falls got 15 points from Becker, 12 from Jesse Lam and 10 from Michah Helfrey. Stout won the battle off the glass, with a big battle between Bray and Melzer. Melzer came away with 14 boards, while Bray snagged 12.January 21, 2003NATE TEMPLER RECEIVES ATHLETE OF THE WEEK AWARD MENOMONIE - Two UW-Stout's Nate Templer (Jr, Beaver Dam) was named Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) player of the week. Templer, a 6-foot, 5-inch forward, has been instrumental in Stout's four-game conference winning streak that has pushed Stout into a tie for second place. Last week, Templer dominated on both sides of the ball. In an 87-77 come-from-behind win over 14th ranked Whitewater, Jan. 18, Templer had eight blocked shots, scored a team-high 16 points, shooting 5-of-8 from the field (4-of-5 from 3-point range) had five rebounds and one assist. In an 88-59 blowout over UW-La Crosse, Jan. 15, Templer scored a game-high 20 points (8-of-11 from the field, 3-for-4 from 3-point range), pulled down six rebounds, had three assists and one steal. On the week, Templer has scored 36 points (18 ppg, 13-of-19 from the field, 7-of-9 from 3-point range, 3-of-3 from the line), had 11 rebounds, four assists, nine blocked shots and one steal.
January 25, 2003POINTERS COME FROM BEHIND TO DROP STOUT, 6-4 MENOMONIE - UW-Stevens Point scored the final four goals of the game to down UW-Stout, 6-4, in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) action, Saturday, Jan. 25 at the Dunn County Ice Arena. The Blue Devils (5-16-0, 1-9-0 NCHA, 1-6-0 WIAC) rolled off two goals to start the first period, but the Pointers (11-9-1, 6-4-0, 4-3-0) charged back to tie the lead early in the second stanza. Stout shot out to 4-2 lead in the period when Curt Caverly (Fr, Red Wing, Minn) scored at 10:18, with an assist by Andy Jasicki (New Brighton, Minn) and Mitch Kellin (Jr, Cohasset, Minn) scored unassisted in a three minute outburst. But the Pointers added another only a minute later when Joel Marshall scored with six minutes remaining in the period. Marshall collected the hat trick at the nine minute mark of the third period to tie the score at 4 apiece, and in only two minutes, Stevens Point took the lead on a Justin Micek goal. Adam Kostichka got the empty net goal with 21 seconds remain to secure the win. Stout opened the game with a goal by Derek Nichols (Jr, Victoria, Minn), with an assist by Justin Huth (Fr, Shakopee, Minn) at 3:34 into the game, then followed that up with Kellin's first goal of the night at 4:23. Kellin was assisted by Dan Riffe (Jr, Byron, Ill) and Charlie O'Hearn (Jr, Traverse City, Mich). Stevens Point outshot Stout, 47-36. Stout's Tim Elde (Fr, Grafton, ND), making his second consecutive start, had 41 saves. The Pointers' Ryan Scott had 32 saves. Stout will close out their home portion of the schedule next weekend when they host St. Scholastica, Friday, Jan. 31 and UW-Superior, Saturday, Feb. 1.January 23, 2003BLUE DEVILS GET CONFERENCE WIN OVER EAU CLAIRE, 6-5 MENOMONIE - UW-Stout scored four straight goals through the second and third periods and went on to post their first Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) win with a 6-5 decision over UW-Eau Claire, Thursday, Jan. 23 at the Dunn County Ice Arena. Trailing 4-2 nearing the end of the second period, Stout (5-15-0, 1-8-0 NCHA, 1-5-1 WIAC) got into gear seconds after the Blugolds (1-15-2, 1-7-1, 1-5-0) scored their second shorthanded goal of the night. Stout's Justin Huth (Fr, Shakopee, Minn) redirected a shot by Bryan Cummings (Jr, Austin, Minn) with four-minutes, 23-seconds left in the period. Derek Nichols (Jr, Victoria, Minn) got the assist on the power play goal. Only 20 seconds early, Eau Claire's Rob Ouimette had scored an unassisted shorthanded special. Two minutes later, Dan Riffe (Jr, Byron, Ill) took assists from Charlie O'Hearn (Jr, Traverse City, Mich) and Andy Jasicki (Jr, New Brighton, Minn) to tie the score at 4-4 heading into the break. Eight minutes into the final period, Stout got their first lead of the night when Mitch Kellin (Jr, Cohasset, Minn) popped home the puck from just outside the crease. O'Hearn and Riffe assisted. The Blue Devils got a more comfortable lead with five minutes left on a power play goal by Huth inside the circle, assisted by Mike Elm (Fr, Falcon Heights, Minn). Eau Claire made it interesting, as Stout sent two into the penalty box in the final two minutes and Eau Claire's Chip Dunleavy scored with 90 seconds remaining. The Blugolds pulled their goalie in the final minute, but Stout goalie Tim Elde (Fr, Grafton, N.D.) earned his first collegiate win by stopping the couple of Eau Claire shots that came his way. Eau Claire opened the night with a first period goal by Ian Sgambelluri and Ouimette added his first goal of the night, a power play goal at 2:24 in the second period, to give Eau Claire a 2-0 lead. The Blue Devils got on the board when Curt Caverly (Fr, Red Wing, Minn) scored his first collegiate goal midway through the second. Huth and Nichols assisted. Eau Claire took a 3-1 lead on Dunleavy's first goal of the night, a shorthanded goal, two minutes later. Cummings pulled Stout to within 3-2 only 26 seconds later, with an assist by Huth. Ouimette's shorthand goal with five minutes left could have broken the Blue Devils, who snapped a seven-game losing streak, but it seemed to inspire Stout as they rolled off the next four goals. Elde turned away 33 shots on the night, while Stout outshot Eau Claire, 44-38, with the Blugolds' Scott Sutton kicking out 38.
