BLUE DEVILS SLIP PAST UW-WHITEWATER, 78-75

MENOMONIE -
In another shoot-fest from the free throw line, it was shooting from the field in the end that propelled UW-Stout to a 78-75 win over UW-Whitewater, Saturday, Jan. 18 at Whitewater.

With the scored tied at halftime, and trailing most of the second half, the Blue Devils (13-3, 5-2) took the lead for good when Jessie Herrman (Jr, Barron) nailed a 3-pointer with 2-minutes, 18-seconds remaining to push Stout up, 73-72. Lindsey Erichsen (So, Spring Valley, Minn) followed that up 30 seconds later with a shot in the paint to give Stout a three point lead.

The Warhawks (6-8, 1-6), who are coached by former Blue Devil assistant Keri Carollo, pulled back to within one, 75-74, when Cathy Rossi sunk a bucket.

After three missed Blue Devil free throws, Erin Churchill (So, Plum City) connected on the back end of two throws for a two point lead. The Warhawks had a chance to tie the score, but Liz Klusman missed the back end of two charity shots and Churchill grabbed the rebound. After missed shots by both teams, Stout forced a turnover and Erichsen was fouled with one second left. She sank both for the final score.

Stout struggled in the first half, hitting only 33 percent from the field and trailed by as much as 10 points with six minutes left in the half. Stout cut into the lead to tie the game at halftime.

Erichsen led Stout with 18 points, while Steffanie Nemitz (Fr, Bloomington) added 16 and Herrman tossed in 11 points.

Stout had opportunities to put this game away at the free throw line, but made 24-of-46 free throw chances (52 percent). The Warhawks hit 24-of-31 free throw opportunities (77 percent).

Whitewater's Nya Geschke led all scorers with 24 points, including hitting 11-of-15 free throws. Leah Thyne scored 16 and Rossi tallied 10.

Stout will host UW-River Falls, Wednesday, Jan. 22, and will be at league-leading UW-Eau Claire, Saturday, Jan. 25.

Kahl, who scored 15 points in the second half, was 7-of-18 from the field for the game, 4-of-7 from 3-point range and 6-of-7 from the line. Erin Churchill (So, Plum City) scored 11 points and Jessie Herrman (Jr, Barron) came off the bench to score 10 for the Blue Devils (12-3, 4-2)

La Crosse (7-7, 2-4) hit 33-of-47 from the line and were led by Karen Berg, who scored 17 points and pulled down 12 rebounds.

The contest featured 10 first half lead changes, but the Blue Devils took command late in the first half when they went on a 16-3 run to take a 45-32 lead into the locker room.

ANDY BRAY INGNITES RUN IN STOUT COMEBACK WIN OVER WARHAWKS

MENOMONIE -
When UW-Stout's Andy Bray (Jr, Menominee, Mich) went down to a calf injury very early in the UW-La Crosse game, Wednesday, it didn't look like the big guy would be able to play the next game when No. 14 ranked UW-Whitewater came to town.

But Bray started, injured leg and all, and the post player ignited a 10-0 run midway through the second half that gave Stout (10-5, 5-2) an 87-77 win over Whitewater (12-3, 5-2), Saturday, Jan. 18 at Johnson Fieldhouse.

The win moves Stout into a second place tie with Whitewater and UW-River Falls. The Warhawks entered the game tied for the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) lead with UW-Stevens Point. The Pointers, who had lost to Whitewater Wednesday, downed UW-Superior, 69-53, while River Falls tripped up UW-Platteville, 77-70. Stout will play at River Falls, Wednesday, Jan. 22.

Trailing 56-52 with 10 minutes left in the game, Bray scored seven points, pulled down four rebounds and had an assist in Stout's two-minute, 10-0 run, pulling the Blue Devils into a 62-56 lead, a lead they would not relinquish. Stout built their lead to as much as 14 points, 80-67, with 27 seconds remaining.

Casey Chapman (Sr, Hartland) scored Stout's final six points for the game, all from the free throw line.

The Blue Devil defense was stellar, especially in the second half when they held the Warhawks to only 42 percent shooting from the floor.

Nate Templer (Jr, Beaver Dam) finished the night with eight blocked shots, while Bray had three blocks. Julian Greer (Jr, St. Paul, Minn) collected Stout's 12th blocked shot of the evening.

Stout used a balanced scoring attach, with Templer and Barrington Smith (Sr, Oklahoma City, Okla) each scoring 16 points. Bray finished the night with 13 points and eight rebounds. Greer had 12 points and Chapman collected 11 points.

The Warhawks' Matt Jones led the way with 21 points. Londen Donlow had 18 points and Jonathon Hodges finished with 16 points. The Blue Devils held the Warhawks leading scorer, Aubrey Lewis-Byers, to six points, keeping him off the free throw line.

Stout will be at River Falls, Wednesday, and will start the second tour around the WIAC Saturday, Jan. 25 when they are at UW-Eau Claire.

BLUE DEVILS COMFORTABLE WITH DOWNTOWN, RATTLE EAGLES, 88-59

MENOMONIE -
UW-Stout scored 14 3-pointers and the Blue Devils' Jeff Vandendberghe (Jr, Coon Rapids, Minn) had his first career double-double as Stout had little trouble with UW-La Crosse, downing the Eagles, 88-59, Wednesday, Jan. 15 at Johnson Fieldhouse.

Six players connected from 3-point range, but none did as many times as Vandeberghe, who was 5-of-11, just one trey short of tying the school record, to match his career-high of 19 points. Vandenberghe completed the double-double by pulling down 12 rebounds and was only three assists short of a triple double, hooking up with a game-high seven dishes.

Stout (9-5, 4-2) was hot from beyond the arc, nailing down 14-of-30 3-pointers, shooting at a clip of 47 percent. On the evening, Stout shot 55 percent from the field (34-of-62).

Nate Templer (Jr, Beaver Dam) took scoring honors with 20 points and canned 3-of-4 from past the arc. Julian Greer (Jr, St. Paul, Minn) finished with 17 points and Casey Chapman (Sr, Hartland) had 13 points. Stout played without scoring leader Andy Bray (Jr, Menominee, Mich), who went out after only a minute with what appears to be an ankle injury.

The Eagles (5-10, 1-5) had a difficult time from anywhere, hitting only 37 percent (23-61) from the field, 32 percent (7-22) from 3-point range and 75 percent (6-8) from the line.

The Blue Devils controlled the boards, pulling down 44 caroms to La Crosse's 27.

BLUE DEVILS COME UP SHORT AT BETHEL

ST. PAUL, Minn
- Bethel College jumped out for two quick goals, but UW-Stout's Justin Huth (Fr, Shakopee, Minn) answered back to pull the Blue Devils to within one goal. But the Royals went on to post their first win of the season with a 5-2 decision over Stout, Friday, Jan. 17 in St. Paul, Minn.

Bethel scored two goals with win a two minute span around the seven minute mark of the first stanza. Huth came back for Stout with seven minutes remaining in the period, getting an assist from defenseman Bryan Cummings (Jr, Austin, Minn).

The Royals (1-15-0) were not to be denied in the period. Mitch Severson game Bethel a 3-1 lead with 31 second remaining. Bethel added a goal in the second period to build the lead to 4-1. The Royals got the clincher with 29 seconds remaining when Stout pulled goalie Jeff Dotson (Jr, Chanhassen, Minn), giving Bethel's Dan Ubl an empty net, power play goal.

Shots on goal were even, with Bethel holding a slight 43-42 edge.

Stout will host UW-Eau Claire, Thursday, Jan. 23 and UW-Stevens Point, Saturday, Jan. 25.

BLUE DEVILS OVERCOME INJURIES TO RAISE SCORE

LA CROSSE - UW-Stout's Cassie Johnston (Fr, Albertville, Minn) was not even scheduled to compete on the balance beam Friday, Jan. 17 at UW-La Crosse.

Johnston, who had suffered an ankle injury earlier in the week and was going to only compete on the uneven bars, not only competed on the beam - she won the event against the two-time defending national champion Eagles.

Johnston scored a 9.250 to edge out the Eagles' Jennifer Houle (9.20).

Earlier in the meet, Stout lost Rhian Paulson (Fr, Stillwater, Minn) when she probably sprained an ankle on the floor exercis. Paulson had taken over the top spot after Tasha Pasch (Sr, Northfield, Minn) was lost for the season to a knee injury a week earlier.

"For all of the injuries we have had," Blue Devil coach Jeff Richards said, "we did well. Our freshmen really stepped up."

While Stout lost the meet, 177.35-174.20, the young Blue Devils managed to score their highest point total of the season and topped all team scores from last season.

The Blue Devils had the Eagles worried after a couple of rotations, leading the Eagles. La Crosse did pass Stout in the final two events.

Tiffany Reber (Sr, Mantorville, Minn) and Paulson paced Stout on the vault. Reber won the vault in a school record 9.45, breaking the mark of 9.40, while Paulson finished second (9.30). Paulson was second on the uneven bars (8.80) and Johnston was third (8.65).

Lacey Schroedl (So, Minneapolis, Minn) suffered an ankle injury earlier this season and was slated only for the bars, but also competed on the beam and floor.

Helen Pansch (Fr, Zimmerman, Minn), while not placing higher than fifth on any event, performed well, Richards said.
