January 18, 2003BLUE DEVILS SLIP PAST UW-WHITEWATER, 78-75 MENOMONIE - In another shoot-fest from the free throw line, it was shooting from the field in the end that propelled UW-Stout to a 78-75 win over UW-Whitewater, Saturday, Jan. 18 at Whitewater. With the scored tied at halftime, and trailing most of the second half, the Blue Devils (13-3, 5-2) took the lead for good when Jessie Herrman (Jr, Barron) nailed a 3-pointer with 2-minutes, 18-seconds remaining to push Stout up, 73-72. Lindsey Erichsen (So, Spring Valley, Minn) followed that up 30 seconds later with a shot in the paint to give Stout a three point lead. The Warhawks (6-8, 1-6), who are coached by former Blue Devil assistant Keri Carollo, pulled back to within one, 75-74, when Cathy Rossi sunk a bucket. After three missed Blue Devil free throws, Erin Churchill (So, Plum City) connected on the back end of two throws for a two point lead. The Warhawks had a chance to tie the score, but Liz Klusman missed the back end of two charity shots and Churchill grabbed the rebound. After missed shots by both teams, Stout forced a turnover and Erichsen was fouled with one second left. She sank both for the final score. Stout struggled in the first half, hitting only 33 percent from the field and trailed by as much as 10 points with six minutes left in the half. Stout cut into the lead to tie the game at halftime. Erichsen led Stout with 18 points, while Steffanie Nemitz (Fr, Bloomington) added 16 and Herrman tossed in 11 points. Stout had opportunities to put this game away at the free throw line, but made 24-of-46 free throw chances (52 percent). The Warhawks hit 24-of-31 free throw opportunities (77 percent). Whitewater's Nya Geschke led all scorers with 24 points, including hitting 11-of-15 free throws. Leah Thyne scored 16 and Rossi tallied 10. Stout will host UW-River Falls, Wednesday, Jan. 22, and will be at league-leading UW-Eau Claire, Saturday, Jan. 25. January 15, 2003KAHL, FREE THROW SHOOTING GIVE BLUE DEVILS WIN OVER LA CROSSELA CROSSE - Sarah Kahl (Jr, Menomonie) scored a career-high 24 points and UW-Stout hit 30-of-37 from the free throw line to lift the Blue Devils to a 93-78 win over UW-La Crosse, Wednesday, Jan. 15 in La Crosse. Kahl, who scored 15 points in the second half, was 7-of-18 from the field for the game, 4-of-7 from 3-point range and 6-of-7 from the line. The Eagles managed to cut the lead to as little as four points early in the second half, but Stout jumped out to a 14-point, 64-50 lead halfway through the second stanza, and the Eagles never got closer than 10 points the rest of the way. The two teams went 66-of-84 from the free throw line as 60 fouls were called and the teams committed a combined 68 turnovers. Stout won their 14th straight game over the Eagles in a game that ran two-hours, 10-minutes.
January 18, 2003ANDY BRAY INGNITES RUN IN STOUT COMEBACK WIN OVER WARHAWKS MENOMONIE - When UW-Stout's Andy Bray (Jr, Menominee, Mich) went down to a calf injury very early in the UW-La Crosse game, Wednesday, it didn't look like the big guy would be able to play the next game when No. 14 ranked UW-Whitewater came to town. But Bray started, injured leg and all, and the post player ignited a 10-0 run midway through the second half that gave Stout (10-5, 5-2) an 87-77 win over Whitewater (12-3, 5-2), Saturday, Jan. 18 at Johnson Fieldhouse. The win moves Stout into a second place tie with Whitewater and UW-River Falls. The Warhawks entered the game tied for the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) lead with UW-Stevens Point. The Pointers, who had lost to Whitewater Wednesday, downed UW-Superior, 69-53, while River Falls tripped up UW-Platteville, 77-70. Stout will play at River Falls, Wednesday, Jan. 22. Trailing 56-52 with 10 minutes left in the game, Bray scored seven points, pulled down four rebounds and had an assist in Stout's two-minute, 10-0 run, pulling the Blue Devils into a 62-56 lead, a lead they would not relinquish. Stout built their lead to as much as 14 points, 80-67, with 27 seconds remaining. Casey Chapman (Sr, Hartland) scored Stout's final six points for the game, all from the free throw line. The Blue Devil defense was stellar, especially in the second half when they held the Warhawks to only 42 percent shooting from the floor. Nate Templer (Jr, Beaver Dam) finished the night with eight blocked shots, while Bray had three blocks. Julian Greer (Jr, St. Paul, Minn) collected Stout's 12th blocked shot of the evening. January 15, 2003BLUE DEVILS COMFORTABLE WITH DOWNTOWN, RATTLE EAGLES, 88-59 MENOMONIE - UW-Stout scored 14 3-pointers and the Blue Devils' Jeff Vandendberghe (Jr, Coon Rapids, Minn) had his first career double-double as Stout had little trouble with UW-La Crosse, downing the Eagles, 88-59, Wednesday, Jan. 15 at Johnson Fieldhouse.Six players connected from 3-point range, but none did as many times as Vandeberghe, who was 5-of-11, just one trey short of tying the school record, to match his career-high of 19 points. Vandenberghe completed the double-double by pulling down 12 rebounds and was only three assists short of a triple double, hooking up with a game-high seven dishes. Stout (9-5, 4-2) was hot from beyond the arc, nailing down 14-of-30 3-pointers, shooting at a clip of 47 percent. On the evening, Stout shot 55 percent from the field (34-of-62).
