January 11, 2003BLUE DEVILS WOMEN RUN TO WIN OVER PLATTEVILLE, 73-57 MENOMONIE - UW-Platteville nailed two 3-pointers and a bucket to pull to within seven points, 39-32, three minutes into the second half, but UW-Stout rattled off 11 straight points and went on to a 73-57 win, Saturday, Jan. 11 at Johnson Fieldhouse. The Blue Devils (11-3, 3-2) led 35-22 at halftime, but the Pioneers (9-5, 3-3) chiseled away with back-to-back 3-pointers and a bucket by Angie Sisson - her only points of the game - cut Stout's lead to seven points. Molly Hendricks (Fr, Blaine, Minn) nailed two buckets near the 13 minute mark and it was off to the races for the Blue Devils as they ran off to as much as a 25 point lead. Stout, which stretched their winning streak to the Pioneers to 17, shot 48.4 percent in the second half. Tanya Halbach (Sr, Janesville) led Stout with 12 points and Lindsey Erichsen (So, Spring Valley, Minn) finished with 11 points. Laura Verdegan (Jr, Tony) scored only four points, but pulled down a game high nine rebounds. The Pioneers' Tiff Flesch had a game-high six blocked shots, but for the most part, the Blue Devils shut her down, allowing her only six points - eight points under her average - and four rebounds - five under her league-leading 9.8 caroms. Shannon Boatman scored a game-high 14 points.January 6, 2003TITANS TAKE CARE OF BLUE DEVILS, 84-70 OSHKOSH - UW-Oshkosh took a five point, 32-27, haltime lead, then jumped out to a 12-point lead to open the second stanza and went on to down UW-Stout, 84-70, Monday, Jan. 6 at Kolf Sports Center. The Titans (11-1, 2-1) shot 28-of-34 (82 percent) from the line to fend off Stout (10-3, 2-2), which shot only 9-of-17 (53 percent) from the line. Stout's normally balanced scoring could simply not match the Titans' balance. The Blue Devils got a career-high 15 points from Jessie Herrman (Jr, Barron) off the bench and nine points each from Sara Kahl (Jr, Menomonie), Laura Verdegan (Jr, Tony) and Lindsey Erichsen (So, Spring Valley, Minn). The Titans were led by Libby Sievert with 23 points. Kay Mikolajczak and Alison Cesnovar each scored 12 points. Oshkosh had two players score nine points and one scored eight. Stout's starters accounted for 32 points, while Titan starters tossed in 55 points.
January 11, 2003BLUE DEVIL MEN DOWN PLATTEVILLE, 87-85, IN DOUBLE OVERTIME PLATTEVILLE - It took double overtime, but UW-Stout finally picked up a win at UW-Platteville's Williams Fieldhouse, as the Blue Devils carried home an 87-85 hard-fought win, Saturday, Jan. 11. The last time Stout won in Platteville was in 1986 in the NAIA District 14 playoffs. But this one definitely was not easy as Stout (8-5, 3-2) held a nine point lead with 40 seconds left in regulation, only to see the first tie of the game, 69-69, as the buzzer went off. The Blue Devils led 75-72 in the first overtime, only to see the Pioneers' Bryan Stangel hit three of four free throws to tie the game, 75-75. It looked like the game could go into a third overtime as Stout held a four-point, 86-82, lead with 11 seconds left in the second overtime after Nate Severson (Fr, Eau Claire) buried two free throws. Stangel nailed a 3-pointer only five seconds later to make the score 86-85, then Platteville (5-9, 2-4) sent Stout's Casey Chapman (Sr, Hartland) to the line where he missed the first but drained the second with three seconds remaining. Stout tipped the inbound pass and the Blue Devils Mike Lee (Fr, Marshfield) grabbed the ball to seal the win. With the exception of a brief Platteville lead early in the game, the Blue Devils led throughout most of regulation, with their biggest lead coming at 10:39 of the second half when Severson hit a 3-pointer to give Stout a 50-38 lead. Stout never trailed in the first overtime, but trailed for a couple of minutes in the second OT until Julian Greer (Jr, St. Paul, Minn) made two free throws, then hit a runner in the lane to give Stout an 84-82 lead. The Pioneers' Tyler Selk led all scores with 23 points - including 16-of-17 free throws - and added 13 rebounds. Stangel finished with 21 and Brad Reitzner had 14 points. Nate Templer (Jr, Beaver Dam) - who was one of three Blue Devil starters to foul out - led Stout with 21 points. Chapman scored 16. Severson tossed in 14 points, a career-high, Greer added 14 points as well and Barrington Smith (Sr, Oklahoma City, Okla) had 10 points to go with his eight assists. The Blue Devils won the battle on the boards, outrebounding the Pioneers 45-38, with three players - Greer, Smith and Templer - getting eight boards apiece.January 7, 2003BLUE DEVILS CRUSH NORTHWESTERN COLLEGE, 94-54 MENOMONIE - UW-Stout launched a 3-point barrage in the first half and the Blue Devils cruised to a 94-54 non-conference win over Northwestern College, Tuesday, Jan. 7 at Johnson Fieldhouse. The Blue Devils hit 9-of-15 long range bombs in the first half to run out to a 54-24 halftime lead. The Blue Devils finished the night making 12-of-26 3-pointers with four players connecting on two treys. Even the big guys stepped outside as Andy Bray (Jr, Menominee, Mich) nailed down two shots outside the arc on his way to scoring a game-high 21 points. Nate Templer's (Jr, Beaver Dam) only six points came from downtown. Julian Greer (Jr, St. Paul, Minn) didn't hit any threes, but he was 8-for-12 from the floor - including two dunks - and 4-for-4 from the line. The Blue Devils (7-5) excelled from the line, punching in 86 percent of their charity shots, going 12-of-14 for the game and hit all seven first half attempts. Guard Casey Chapman (Sr, Hartland) scored in double-digits with 10 points. Coach Eddie Andrist had an opportunity to clear the bench and 12 of 13 players tickled the twine. The Eagles (4-12) had no players score more than nine points.
January 11, 2003HOCKEY TEAM DOWNED BY RIVER FALLS, 6-2 MENOMONIE - UW-River Falls scored the first five goals of the game and went on to defeat UW-Stout, 6-2, in a Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) contest, Saturday, Jan. 11 at the Dunn County Ice Arena. The Falcons' (15-2-1, 7-0-1) Rob Novak scored two goals in the first period, then was followed by teammate John Conboy who scored the first two goals in the second stanza. Jamie Steinert scored a third second period goal seconds before intermission. The Blue Devils (4-14-0), 0-8-0) did get on the board early in the third period when Dan Winkler (Jr, Brooklyn Center, Minn) scored unassisted. The Falcons' Aaron Degerness scored midway through the final period. Stout capped off the scoring when Lewie Kellin (Jr, Cohasset, Minn) scored with a minute remaining, getting assists from John Schaffner (So, Janesville) and Dan Riffe (Jr, Byron, Ill). Stout's Jeff Dotson (Jr, Chanhassen, Minn) recorded 55 saves, while the Falcons' Dan Meneghin had 22 saves. Stout will be at Bethel College, Friday, Jan. 17, then will host UW-Eau Claire, Thursday, Jan. 23 and UW-Stevens Point, Saturday, Jan. 25.January 10, 2003FALCONS BLANK BLUE DEVILS IN RETURN TO NCHA PLAY RIVER FALLS - Eight different players scored as UW-River Falls defeated UW-Stout, 8-0, in a return to Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) play, Friday, Jan. 10 at Hunt Arena in River Falls. The fifth ranked Falcons (14-2-2, 6-0-1) scored four goals in the first period, one in the second and three in the third to put the Blue Devils (4-13-0, 0-7-0) on ice. Evan Stensrud led the way for the Falcons, scoring a goal and three assists. Rheese Carlson opened up the scoring with a goal at 5:54 in the first. Marc-Andre Lalande followed with an unassisted power play goal a minute later. Josh Schlipp scored at the seven minute mark and Stensrud finished up the first period scoring at the 15 minute mark. Blue Devil goalie Jeff Dotson (Jr, Chanhassen, Minn) kicked out 20 second period goals, but Rob Novak scored the only goal in the second period with four minutes left. Jess Johnson, Jamie Steinert and Mike Salmela scored goals in the third, Salmela's coming on the power play. Dotson finished the game with 42 saves and the Falcons Jacque Vezina was perfect with 20 saves as the Falcons outshot Stout, 50-20.January 7, 2003BLUE DEVILS SCORE FIRST, THEN FALL TO GUSTAVUS MENOMONIE - UW-Stout drew first blood, but then had trouble stopping the bleeding as the Blue Devils dropped a 6-3 non-conference decision to Gustavus Adolphus, Tuesday, Jan. 7 at the Dunn County Ice Arena. Stout's Mike Elm (Fr, Falcon Heights, Minn) scored only three minutes into the game, getting an assist by Bryan Cummings (Jr, Austin, Minn) but Gustavus rolled off five straight goals over the first and second period to take command. Stout (4-12-0) did come back with a goal late in the second period when Nate Legler (Jr, Lakeville, Minn) scored, with assists by Lewie Kellin (Jr, Cohasset, Minn) and Dan Winkler (Jr, Brooklyn Center, Minn). The teams traded goals in the third period with Gustavus (4-9-0) going first, followed by Derek Nichols' (Jr, Victoria, Minn) goal seven minutes into the period. Nichols was assisted by Cummings and Elm. The Gusties' Joe Ulwelling and Kyle Menken each scored two goals.
January 8, 2003BLUE DEVILS FARE WELL IN OPENER, BUT LOSE TOP GYMNAST WINONA, Minn - Overall, UW-Stout gymnastics coach Jeff Richards was upbeat about the Blue Devils' season opening 175.375-172.125 loss to Winona State. But Stout was dealt a severe loss when the Blue Devils' three-time national qualifier was lost for the season. The Blue Devils were leading the NCAA Division II school by two points after the first two events, but the floor exercise, Stout's third event, was their downfall. Several falls and misses produced low scores and then the big blow came when Tasha Pasch (Sr, Northfield, Minn) crashed to the mat with an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. Pasch had qualified to the national championship her first three years and was a two-time all-around conference champion. "This is like losing our star quarterback," Richards said. Pasch had helped propel the Blue Devils in front of the Warriors, taking a first on the uneven bars (8.90). Freshman Rhian Paulson (Stillwater, Minn) was second on the event (8.60). Pasch was fourth on the vault (9.075) and newcomer Tiffany Reber (Sr, Mantorville, Minn) was fifth (9.00). With the loss of Pasch, Paulson stepped up into Stout's top spots the rest of the way, winning the balance beam (9.15) and finishing second on the floor (9.325). Cassie Johnston (Albertville, Minn) finished second on the beam (9.125) and Reber was fourth on the floor (9.050). Paulson snagged the top all-around spot, scoring a 35.975. Reber finished fifth (34.80) and Johnston seventh (34.275). Stout will be at Gustavus Adolphus, Monday, Jan. 13.
