TONY BECKHAM NOW OFFICIALLY A TENNESSEE TITAN

NASHVILLE, Tenn - Former UW-Stout cornerback Tony Beckham has made the final roster for the Tennesse Titans and will become the second Stout player in two years to make an NFL regular season roster.

Beckham has seen considerable playing time for the Titans in the preseason and is currently listed second on the depth chart at left cornerback, although the depth chart listed on the Titans' web page does not appear to have been updated since finals cuts were announced.

To get down to the final 53 player roster mandated by the NFL, the Titans released seven players on Saturday, Aug. 31 following the Titans' 21-20 loss at Green Bay. Tennessee released six more players Sunday.

While Titan head coach Jeff Fisher had no specific public comments about Beckham, he did talk about how young a team the Titans have.

"Let me put it in perspective," Fisher said. "We have 11 rookies on our roster. That makes 21 in the last two years, so yes we have a young football team.

"We also have guys in key positions who have been there, who have been in the war and understand the importance of playing every week. We would keep these young players if we didn't have confidence in their abilities to make plays for us."

Beckham's former Stout teammate, defensive lineman Jeff Hazuga, was the second Stout athlete to earn a regular season NFL roster when he made the Minnesota Viking roster last season. Hazuga was released by the Vikings this spring.

The Titans open the regular season Sunday, Sept. 8 when they host the Philadelphia Eagles.

BLUE DEVILS DROP ONE-GOAL GAME TO CARLETON IN OPENER

NORTHFIELD, Minn - The young and battered UW-Stout soccer defense held together for most of the game, but Carleton College pierced the goal in the 70th minute to hand the Blue Devils a 1-0 loss in the season opener for both team, Saturday, August 31 in Northfield, Minn.

The Knight's Amy Holmes recorded the goal in the 70th minute of the contest.

The Blue Devils' best scoring opportunity came 14 minutes later when Kelly Stolarczyk (Fr, Elk River) had a left-footed shot from 14 yards stopped on a tough save by the Carleton goalkeeper.

Stout challenged the Carleton goalie earlier in the game when Carrie Schrank's (So, Reedsburg) shot from 30 yards out was deflected up and over the goal. Earlier, Krista Hight (So, Brookfield) curled a corner kick towards the goal, but it was blocked by a defender.

Freshman Steph Hennick (Elk River) made her first collegiate start and recorded six saves. Carleton's Sarah Granofsky notched four saves in the shutout.

Stout will open their home portion of the season when they host St. Scholastica, Wednesday, Sept. 4 at 7 p.m.
