December 1, 2002BLUE DEVILS EDGE NORTHLAND, 78-74, TO GET BACK ON WINNING TRACK ASHLAND - UW-Stout got back on the winning track, but it wasn't easy as the Blue Devils won a 78-74 nailbiter over Northland College, Sunday, Dec. 1 in Ashland. With Stout leading 74-72, Lindsey Erichsen (So, Spring Valley, Minn) drove the lane to put Stout (4-1) ahead, 76-72 with 1:40 remaining in the game. The Lumberjills tightened the score back to two points, 76-74, but Tanya Halbach (Sr, Janesville) sealed the deal with two free throws for the final tally. Sara Kahl (Jr, Menomonie) led Stout with 15 points. Erichsen finished with 13 points. Halbach and Laura Verdegan (Jr, Tony) each added 12 points. The Blue Devils forced 30 Lumberjill turnovers. Stout will host UW-Superior, Wednesday, Dec. 4, to open up Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play at 7 p.m.November 30, 2002ERICHSEN CAREER-BEST NOT ENOUGH AS BLUE DEVILS FALL DULUTH, Minn - Lindsey Erichsen (So, Spring Valley, Minn) scored a career-best 27 points but it wasn't enough as UW-Stout lost their first game of the season, 94-87, to St. Scholastica, Saturday, Nov. 30 in Duluth, Minn. The Saints (3-1) took a 45-33 halftime lead as Stout (3-1) shot 22 percent from the floor in the first half. Stout roared back in the second half with a 54 point effort, hitting 49 percent of their shots, but still fell short. Erichsen tossed down 9-of-14 shots from the field and hit an identical 9-of-14 from the free throw line. Stout's Tanya Halbach (Sr, Janesville), Laura Verdegan (Jr, Tony) and Erin Churchill (So, Plum City) each tossed in 12 points. Verdegan had 12 rebounds. The Saints, who hit 23-of-35 second half free throws, were led by Jen Kne with 22 points and Jacki Plesha with 20 points. Plesha got 12 of her points at the line.November 26, 2002DEFENSIVE PRESSURE GIVES STOUT IMPETUS FOR WIN OVER EAGLES MENOMONIE - A couple of turnovers converted to points were enough to spring UW-Stout to a 15 point lead late in the first half and the Blue Devils never looked back on their way to an 84-57 non-conference win over Northwestern College, Tuesday, Nov. 26 at Johnson Fieldhouse. Jessie Herrman (Jr, Barron) hit a 3-pointer with 6:00 on the first half clock following a turnover to give Stout a 31-20 lead and Laura Verdegan (Jr, Tony) stole the ball and scored to push Stout to 33-20. Seconds later, Steffanie Nemitz (Fr, Bloomington) pulled down a defensive rebound, then got scoring honors to push Stout to 15 points up. Stout never led by less than 10 points the rest of the way. Stout (3-0) was led in a balanced scoring attack - 16 different Blue Devils scored - by Tanya Halbach (Sr, Janesville) with 12 points, all from 3-point range. Herrman finished with 11 points, three from beyond the arc, and Verdegan had 10 points. The Eagles (3-2) were led by Sara Tonneson with 12 points and Jessica Emmert with 11. December 1, 2002BLUE DEVILS CAPTURE FIRST WIN BY ROUTING NORTHLAND ASHLAND - UW-Stout shot out to a 37-16 halftime lead and never looked back as the Blue Devils easily picked up their first win of the season, a 81-38 pummeling of Northland College, Sunday, Dec. 1 in Ashland. Andy Bray (Jr, Menominee, Mich) scored 15 points to lead the Blue Devils (2-1). Barrington Smith (Sr, Oklahoma City, Okla) chipped in 11 points and had five steals. Stout forced 33 Lumberjack (0-4) turnovers and converted on 8-of-9 free throw attempts. All 13 Stout players that stepped onto the court scored at least two points. Stout will be at UW-Superior, Wednesday, Dec. 4, to open up Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play.
November 26, 2002FOUR GOAL THIRD PERIOD FLURRY HANDS STOUT 6-2 LOSS WINONA, Minn - Four goals in the third period spelled UW-Stout's demise as the Blue Devils lost a 6-2 non-conference contest at St. Mary's University, Tuesday, Nov. 26 in Winona, Minn. Trailing 2-0 in the second period, Stout's Josh Vonch (Jr, Red Wing, Minn) scored, with an assist by Josh Blair (Fr, Appleton), to pull to within one. But after holding off St. Mary's (7-2-0) for the rest of the period, the defense collapsed as the Cardinals scored 16 seconds into the third stanza, and again just over a minute later. The Cardinals added two more before Kory Mortel (So, Cottage Grove, Minn) scored for Stout (3-7-0) with four minutes left in the contest. The Cardinals outshot Stout, 44-27. Stout will be off until Dec. 6 when they travel to Colorado Springs, Colo, to participate in the Radisson Inn tournament hosted by the Air Force Academy.

November 22, 2002FOUR TO BE INDUCTED INTO UW-STOUT HALL OF FAME MENOMONIE - UW-Stout athletics was making its mark in the late 1980s, and four athletes from that standout era will be inducted into the UW-Stout Athletic Hall of Fame, Saturday, Dec. 7. Volleyball player Jennifer Carter, basketball and track participant Terri Tretsven, baseball player Matt Barnard and tennis player John Leehy will be inducted in ceremonies at the Memorial Student Center beginning at 9:30 a.m. Paul and Sharon Ramey will receive the UW-Stout Athletic Distinguished Service Award. For ticket information or more information, call 715-232-2224. Matt BarnardEven Matt Barnards catchers mitt wasnt big enough to hold all of the awards over a stellar four-year career from 1989-92 that saw UW-Stout twice advance to the NAIA World Series. Barnard, a Menomonie native, was a four-time first team all-WSUC pick, a two-time NAIA All-American, three time NAIA all-district choice, the NAIA Area V player of the year, an NCAA all-Midwest selection and was the WSUC Scholar-Athlete for baseball his senior year. Barnard led the WSUC in batting average (.526) and RBI (27) in 1990. He is currently sixth on Stouts all-time list for career batting average (.383) and hits (180) and fourth in RBI (109). During Barnard's career, the Blue Devils advanced to the NAIA World Series in 1989 and 1990 and were the 1990 WSUC champions after sweeping UW-Oshkosh in the playoff series. Jennifer Carter A three-time all-conference selection, Jen Carter laid the groundwork for the success of the UW-Stout volleyball program, playing from 1989-92, but almost did not come to Stout. Her aunt, Kay Carter, was an instructor and coach in the Stout physical education department and made a pitch for her to attend Stout and take a swing at the volleyball squad. The rest, as they say, is history. A powerful left-handed hitter, the Blue Devils built their program around her and she responded with 1267 career kills, then a school record, with a hitting percentage of .246. Carter still holds the school record for kills in a single match with 28 against Northland College, Sept. 25, 1991. An all-around player, Carter was not afraid to go to the floor, and finished her career with 943 digs. John Leehy John Leehy knew no other way than for UW-Stout to be the WSUC tennis champions. During his career from 1984-87, the Blue Devils were league champions and Leehy was right in the middle of it, capping off his career with a No. 1 singles title and the No. 2 doubles championship his senior year. The 1987 WSUC scholar-athlete, Leehy ranked 17th in the NCAA Division III and also won the NAIA singles and doubles championships, as well as receiving the Arthur Ashe Award for humanitarian efforts. The Arthur Ashe Award takes into consideration the player's tennis and academic achievements along with sportsmanship and humanitarian concerns. The award was given to only one male and one female tennis player each year. Leehy captured the 1985 No. 3 singles WSUC title, as well as the No. 2 doubles title. Terri Tretsven A two-sports standout, Terri Tretsven excelled at basketball and track and field from 1989-92. Tretsven lettered three years in track, setting school records in the shot put and discus several times, records that were broken as recently as last season. She qualified to the national meet in the shot put in 1992, placing 11th. Tretsven is currently second on the Stout outdoor shot put list and the discus, and is third javelin. Tretsven saw considerable time on the basketball court, and was a two-time honorable mention all-conference pick. She currently holds the school record for free throw percentage (.769) over her career and was a force under the boards, with three of her single season marks for rebounds still ranking in the top 20. Tretsven's top year off the boards was the 1990-91 season when she pulled down 270 rebounds, fourth on the single season list. Updated: November 25, 2002 |
