DEFENSE PREVAILS AS BLUE DEVILS DOWN MILLIKIN, 69-47

DECATUR, Ill
- The UW-Stout explosive offense usually gets much of the attention, but it was the Blue Devils' defense that provided the spark as Stout downed Millikin University, 69-47, Sunday, Nov. 24 in the Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament in Decatur, Ill.

The Blue Devils (2-0) shut down Millikin coming out of the locker room, holding the Big Blue scoreless for the first five minutes of the second half and limiting them to only 16 second half points. Stout held Millikin to a miserly 27 percent shooting from the field in the second half and 30 percent on the game.

Stout turned a 34-31 halftime advantage into 43-33 lead at the 15 minute mark of the second stanza and coasted to the win.

Jesse Herrman (Jr, Barron) led Stout with 13 points off the bench, while Laura Verdegan (Jr, Tony) added 11 points and Erin Churchill (So, Plum City) 10. Herrman finished the game with five steals as Stout picked Millikin's pocket 20 times, and forced 37 turnovers.

Verdegan, who was named to the all-tournament team along with Sara Kahl (Jr, Menomonie) had seven rebounds.

Millikin got 15 points from Laura Zimmerman and Karin Olson pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds.

Stout will host Northwestern College, Tuesday, Nov. 26 at 7 p.m.

Kahl got a good portion of her points at the free throw line, hitting 7-of-8 freebies. The free throw line was good to Stout, overall, as the Blue Devils connected on 28-of-43 charity shots.

Laura Verdegan (Jr, Tony) tossed in 13 points and had four steals and four blocked shots. Freshman Molly Hendricks (Blaine, Minn) scored 11 points in her collegiate debut, Tanya Halbach (Sr, Janesville) pitched in with 10 points.

MINNESOTA-MANKATO PULLS OUT ONE OVER BLUE DEVILS

MANKATO, Minn
- UW-Stout led nearly the entire way, but an eight point flurry by Minnesota State-Mankato in the final minutes handed the Blue Devils an 84-80 loss at the Pepsi Tip Off Classic in Mankato, Minn., Saturday, Nov. 23.

Stout (0-2) built up as much as an 11 point lead in the first half over the NCAA Division II Mavericks, powered by Andy Bray's (Jr, Menominee, Mich) 12 points and Cornelius Pitts' (So, Chicago, Ill) 10 first half points.

Stout carried a 42-36 lead into the locker room, but Mankato chiseled away at the lead and took the lead with about two minutes remaining. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Tyler Griffin and Luke Anderson and a lay-up by Ryan Hulke with 55 seconds remaining gave Mankato (2-0) an 81-77 lead.

Barrington Smith (Sr, Oklahoma City, Okla) cut the deficit to one for Stout, 81-80, hitting a 3-pointer with 43 seconds left, but the Mavericks hit three consecutive free throws to seal the win.

Mankato's Drew Carlson led all scorers with 23 points as the Mavericks had five players in double digits. Nick Ellenberger had 18 points, Anderson 13, Jermaine Brown 12, and Griffin 10.

Nate Templer (Jr, Beaver Dam) led the way for Stout with 19 points before fouling out. Bray finished with 17, as did Casey Chapman (Sr, Hartland). Pitts was held scoreless in the second half and finished with 10 points.

Stout returns to action Sunday, Dec. 1 when they travel to Northland College.

BLUE DEVILS OPEN SEASON WITH LOSS TO NO. 5 RANKED TECH

MANKATO, Minn -
UW-Stout hung with No. 5 ranked Michigan Tech for a while, but the NCAA Division II team pulled away from the Blue Devils midway through the first half and never looked back, handing Stout a 93-71 season opening loss at the Pepsi Tip-Off Classic in Mankato, Minn.

The teams played even for the first 11 minutes as Stout took a five point, 27-22 lead at the 10:47 mark before Tech tied the score two mintues later, then took the lead on a JT Luginksi layup and never trailed.

Tech (1-0) went on a 14-0 run over the next three minutes before Jeff Vandenberghe (Jr, Coon Rapids, Minn) broke Stout's drought with two free throws at the 5:43 mark, but not before Michigan had built a 41--27 lead. Tech took a 23 point lead into the locker room and kept Stout at bay with generally a 20 point lead throughout.

Tech shot at a 71 percent clip in the first half, then "cooled down" to finish at 62 percent for the game. Stout shot 41 percent for the game.

Four Blue Devils - Vandenberghe, Andy Bray (Jr, Menominee, Mich), Barrington Smith (Sr, Oklahoma City, Okla) and Cornelius Pitts (So, Chicago, Ill) - scored 14 points.

Tech was led by Matt Cameron with 19 points, while Luginski and Jeremy Resmer each scored 16 points.

BLUE DEVILS TRIPPED UP BY LAKE FOREST, 5-1

MENOMONIE
- Lake Forest College's David Evans scored a hat trick and the Foresters scored the first four goals - three on power plays - of the game as Lake Forest downed UW-Stout, 5-1, Saturday, Nov. 23 at the Dunn County Ice Arena.

Evans scored the first goal of the game with four minutes left in the first period, then added one the second and third periods. The Foresters' (4-3-1, 3-3-0 NCHA) added two more goals in the second to jump out to a 4-0 lead, but Stout (3-6-0, 0-6-0) averted the shutout only five seconds after the Forester's fourth goal when Dan Winkler (Jr, Brooklyn Center, Minn) scored with 45 seconds left in the second period. He was assisted by Dan Riffe (Jr, Byron, Ill).

The Foresters came after the Blue Devils hard in the third period, outshooting Stout 23-8 in the stanza. On the day, Lake Forest held a 42-29 advantage in shots on goal.

GREEN KNIGHTS SHOW WHY THEY ARE NO. 1, DOWN STOUT

MENOMONIE -
St. Norbert College used nine different player to put the puck into the net as they downed UW-Stout, 10-4, in a NCHA contest, Friday, Nov. 22 at the Dunn County Ice Arena.

The Green Knights (10-0, 5-0), ranked No. 1 in the latest USHCO.com Division III poll, scored three goals in a 90 second time span midway through the first period to open up the scoring.

Stout's Josh Vonch (Jr, Red Wing, Minn) got the Blue Devils (3-5, 0-5) on the board 40 seconds after St. Norbert's third goal, then Dan Riffe (Jr, Byron, Ill) added another with four minutes left in the period to pull Stout to within 3-2.

St. Norbert tagged on another goal to close the first period, then added two more goals in the second. The Knights opened the third period with a power play goal, but Stout answered back seconds later with a Dan Winkler (Sr, Brooklyn Center, Minn) goal to pull the Blue Devils to 7-3.

St. Norbert would have none of that, scoring two more goals in a minute span around the six minute mark before Stout's Justin Huth (Fr, Shakopee, Minn) goal.

The Knights' closed out the scoring when Faren Duthie scored his second goal of the night with three minutes remaining in the contest.

St. Norbert outshot Stout, 51-20. Jeff Dotson (Jr, Chanhassen, Minn) took the loss, stopping 34 shots, while Andy Scanlon (Fr, Apple Valley, Minn) worked the final 20 minutes, stopping 17 shots.

JAMIE SPIELMAN RACKS UP NATIONAL HONORS

MENOMONIE
— For the third consecutive year, a UW-Stout football player has been invited to play in the Aztec Bowl.

Jamie Spielman, a linebacker from Menomonie, has accepted the invitation to play in the game that features a team of 42 NCAA Division III all-stars that will face a Mexican all-star team in Torreon, Mexico on Dec. 14.

Spielman is also a finalist for the Gagliardi Award, the NCAA Division III equivalent of the Heisman Award. The announcement will be made Dec. 19.

Spielman was the Blue Devils’ leading tackler with 86 tackles, 59 of them solo. He led the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) in tackles for loss (21-70 yds) and was second in sacks (7-50 yds). Spielman is a two-time first team all-WIAC selection and was named to the WIAC second team twice.

Spielman is the son of Jeff and Geneva Spielman.

Defensive lineman Jeff Hazuga was the first Stout player to participate in the Aztec Bowl, playing in 2000. Cornerback Tony Beckham was invited to play last season, but declined because the date fell on Stout’s graduation day.

BLUE DEVILS HAVE 15 NAMED TO ALL-CONFERENCE TEAM

MENOMONIE -
Coming off one of the best seasons in UW-Stout football history, the Blue Devils had 15 players named to the 2002 All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) football team.

The Blue Devils (7-3, 4-3) finished in a tie for third in the conference and were in the championship race literally down to the last second of the last game when they lost to eventual champion, UW-La Crosse, 28-27.

Three Stout players were unanimous selections to the squad: offensive lineman Ben Knepper (Jr, Rice Lake), tailback Luke Bundgaard (Jr, Weyerhaeuser) and linebacker Jamie Spielman (Sr, Menomonie).

Linebacker Mark Ralph (Sr, Colfax) was named as the Max Sparger co-Scholar-Athlete.

Defensive lineman Joe Kersten (Jr, Menasha) and cornerback Tyrone Rhone (Sr, Milwaukee) joined Spielman as first team defensive selections.

Offensive linemen Clint Greenebaum (Jr, Hartland) and Josh Towner (Jr, La Crosse), along with fulback Matt Schaeuble (So, Wrightstown) and tailback Ryan Englebert (Fr, Sturgeon Bay) were second team offensive choices. Quarterback Nick Ohman (So, Glenwood City) was an honorable mention selection.

Nose guard Matt Mueller (Jr, Chaska, Minn) and cornerback Eric Moe (Sr, Hixton) joined Ralph as a second team defensive choice and Jarrid Gohs (Sr, Franklin) received honorable mention.

Spielman highlighted a Blue Devil defense that finished first in the conference for the third consecutive year, and it is no coincident that Spielman started all three seasons. Spielman, an All-America candidate, led the league in tackles for loss with 21 for 70 yards, was third in sacks with seven for 50 yards, and fifth in tackles with 86, 59 solo. The Stout defense held opposing offenses to 239.6 yards per game, holding the rushing game down to 50 yards per game.

Knepper and Bundgaard were keys in Stout's high octane offense that moved to the top of the league, averaging 398.1 total yards of offense and 28.5 points per game.

Knepper, a 6-foot, 4-inch, 305-lb. tackle, started all 10 games, despite a midseason injury, and graded out highest on the offensive line. After giving up a sack in the first game of the season, Knepper allowed no more the rest of the season. The Blue Devils rushed for 225.1 yards, second only to wishbone and run-oriented UW-River Falls.

Bundgaard returns to the first team after a second team choice last season. The all-time leading Stout rusher, Bundgaard rushed for 879 yards in 184 carries (4.8 y/carry) with 10 touchdowns. Bundgaard has 2,966 career rushing yards and has scored 168 points, only 10 points short of the school record.

Greenebaum, a 6-2, 280-lb guard, and Towner, the 6-2, 280-lb center, have been part of the offensive line since their freshman years, starting the majority, if not all games.

Engelbert and Bundgaard split backfield duties, with Engelbert carrying the ball 179 times for 801 yards (4.5 y/carry) and six touchdowns. With Schaeuble's selection, the entire regular backfield was honored. Schaeuble hauled the football 34 times for 178 yards (5.2 y/carry) with two touchdowns. Schaeuble caught 14 passes for 110 yards and two scores.

Ohman, who missed two games with a knee injury, engineered the entire offense, completing 115-of-230 passes for 1460 yards and 11 touchdowns. Running out of the option, Ohman carried the ball 90 times for 370 yards.

Kersten was a physical force to be reckoned with on the defensive line. At 6-5, 290-lbs, Kersten finished with 22 tackles, 13 solo, with 10 tackles for losses of 34 yards and had five sacks.

Rhone stepped into the shoes vacated by Tony Beckham, and filled them admirably. Attracting attention by several NFL teams, Rhone covered his opponents like a fly on flypaper. Rhone finished with four interceptions and six pass break ups. Playing both offensively and defensively on special teams, Rhone averaged 21.6 yards per kickoff return and 8.3 yards per punt return.

Moe established himself as a premier back, snagging five interceptions - returning one 34 yards for a TD - this season to move his career totals to a school record 20. Moe had a league-leading 14 pass breakups.

Mueller, combined with Kersten and Gohs, presented a solid wall on the defensive line. The 6-3, 260-lb Mueller finished with 10 tackles for losses of 38 yards and three sacks. Gohs had 22 tackles, 13 solo, with a sack.

Ralph, who has a grade point average of 3.493 in packaging engineering, was selected to the second team for the second consecutive year. Ralph, an inside linebacker, finished with 59 total tackles, 33 solo, 19 tackles for losses of 41 yards and four sacks for 20 yards.

Thaddeus Rego, a defensive lineman from UW-La Crosse, was named the player of the year, Mike Bestul of UW-Eau Claire joined Ralph as the co-scholar athlete and Larry Terry of UW-La Crosse was named the coach of the year.

SIVERTSEN, SCHNEIDER NAMED TO ALL-WIAC SOCCER TEAM

MENOMONIE
- In a season that saw UW-Stout's offense and defense post record performances, the Blue Devils had an offensive and defensive player named to the 2002 All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) team.

Forward Nellie Sivertsen (Sr, River Falls) and defender Raina Schneider (Sr, Sheboygan) were both named to the team.

Sivertsen, Stout's all-time leading scorer, was named to the all-WIAC team for the third time after scoring 12 goals, four assists and adding three game winning goals. Sivertsen scored a hat trick and added two assists on Oct. 31. For her career, Sivertsen has 44 goals and 16 assists for 104 points. Sivertsen was a first team choice last season and as a freshman.

Schneider makes her first appearance on the honor squad after leading Stout to a best-ever 20 goals allowed, just over one goal per game. The Blue Devils posted a school record eight shutouts and was named the WIAC player of the week in October after playing a central role in a shutout streak that stretched to 240 minutes over three games.

Stout finished the season at 7-5-5 overall, 2-2-4 in the WIAC.

STOUT'S ZENNER NAMED REGION FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR

MENOMONIE -
UW-Stout middle hitter Tanille Zenner (Fr, Athens) was named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-Midwest Region team and was named the Midwest Region freshman of the year.

Zenner, a transfer from UW-Stevens Point where she did not play volleyball, finished the season with 445 kills (3.56 k/g), 26 service aces, 146 digs, 53 solo blocks and a school record 107 block assists.

Zenner appeared in 125 of the Blue Devils' 126 games, despite ligament damage to her thumb and having to play with the hand wrapped nearly the entire season.

Coach Jill Jolliff had scouted Zenner in high school and saw her potential, but after Zenner sat out a year, Jolliff wasn't sure what Zenner would do.

"We knew Tanille would be good and could help us," Jolliff said, "but didn't realize how much of an asset she would be."

Zenner was second in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) in hitting percentage (.343) and total blocks (1.28 b/g) and seventh in kills.

Brooke Viegut (Jr, Abbotsford) was an honorable mention selection to the All-Midwest team. Viegut led Stout in kills with 467 (3.86 k/g) and was third in the WIAC. Viegut was only six digs short of the school record with 531 and was fourth in league play (4.39 d/g).

UW-Stout finished the season at 31-6 overall, their most wins since the 1994 season, and placed third in the WIAC.

Zenner is eligible for All-America honors, which will be announced Nov. 27.

FOUR TO BE INDUCTED INTO UW-STOUT HALL OF FAME

MENOMONIE
- UW-Stout athletics was making its mark in the late 1980s, and four athletes from that standout era will be inducted into the UW-Stout Athletic Hall of Fame, Saturday, Dec. 7.

Volleyball player Jennifer Carter, basketball and track participant Terri Tretsven, baseball player Matt Barnard and tennis player John Leehy will be inducted in ceremonies at the Memorial Student Center beginning at 9:30 a.m. Paul and Sharon Ramey will receive the UW-Stout Athletic Distinguished Service Award.

For ticket information or more information, call 715-232-2224.

Matt Barnard
Even Matt Barnard’s catcher’s mitt wasn’t big enough to hold all of the awards over a stellar four-year career from 1989-92 that saw UW-Stout twice advance to the NAIA World Series.

Barnard, a Menomonie native, was a four-time first team all-WSUC pick, a two-time NAIA All-American, three time NAIA all-district choice, the NAIA Area V player of the year, an NCAA all-Midwest selection and was the WSUC Scholar-Athlete for baseball his senior year.

Barnard led the WSUC in batting average (.526) and RBI (27) in 1990. He is currently sixth on Stout’s all-time list for career batting average (.383) and hits (180) and fourth in RBI (109).

During Barnard's career, the Blue Devils advanced to the NAIA World Series in 1989 and 1990 and were the 1990 WSUC champions after sweeping UW-Oshkosh in the playoff series.

Jennifer Carter
A three-time all-conference selection, Jen Carter laid the groundwork for the success of the UW-Stout volleyball program, playing from 1989-92, but almost did not come to Stout.

Her aunt, Kay Carter, was an instructor and coach in the Stout physical education department and made a pitch for her to attend Stout and take a swing at the volleyball squad. The rest, as they say, is history.

A powerful left-handed hitter, the Blue Devils built their program around her and she responded with 1267 career kills, then a school record, with a hitting percentage of .246. Carter still holds the school record for kills in a single match with 28 against Northland College, Sept. 25, 1991.

An all-around player, Carter was not afraid to go to the floor, and finished her career with 943 digs.

John Leehy
John Leehy knew no other way than for UW-Stout to be the WSUC tennis champions.

During his career from 1984-87, the Blue Devils were league champions and Leehy was right in the middle of it, capping off his career with a No. 1 singles title and the No. 2 doubles championship his senior year.

The 1987 WSUC scholar-athlete, Leehy ranked 17th in the NCAA Division III and also won the NAIA singles and doubles championships, as well as receiving the Arthur Ashe Award for humanitarian efforts. The Arthur Ashe Award takes into consideration the player's tennis and academic achievements along with sportsmanship and humanitarian concerns. The award was given to only one male and one female tennis player each year.

Leehy captured the 1985 No. 3 singles WSUC title, as well as the No. 2 doubles title.

Terri Tretsven
A two-sports standout, Terri Tretsven excelled at basketball and track and field from 1989-92.

Tretsven lettered three years in track, setting school records in the shot put and discus several times, records that were broken as recently as last season. She qualified to the national meet in the shot put in 1992, placing 11th. Tretsven is currently second on the Stout outdoor shot put list and the discus, and is third javelin.

Tretsven saw considerable time on the basketball court, and was a two-time honorable mention all-conference pick. She currently holds the school record for free throw percentage (.769) over her career and was a force under the boards, with three of her single season marks for rebounds still ranking in the top 20. Tretsven's top year off the boards was the 1990-91 season when she pulled down 270 rebounds, fourth on the single season list.
