November 11, 2002BLUE DEVILS MUST WIN TO SHARE CONFERENCE TITLE UW-La Crosse Eagles (6-3, 5-1) at UW-Stout Blue Devils (7-2, 4-2)Saturday, Nov. 16, 1 p.m. Don & Nona Williams Stadium, Menomonie, Wis. ON THE LINE: The conference title. Forget about UW-Stout controlling their own destiny - that title now goes to UW-La Crosse after Stouts 24-21 loss to UW-Whitewater. The Eagles come to Menomonie as the final WIAC team to play on the artificial surface of Don & Nona Williams Stadium, but after clinching a share of the title, they will be thinking outright conference title. The Eagles (6-3, 5-1) are currently alone in first place after defeating UW-Eau Claire last week. Stout (7-2, 4-2) is in a tie for second with the Warhawks, the Blugolds and UW-Stevens Point. La Crosse can win the title outright with a win. A Stout win combined with a Whitewater loss to UW-Oshkosh and Stout gets a three-way share of the title (Point plays at Eau Claire) and the automatic NCAA playoff berth. If Stout and Whitewater win, things get messy with four teams tied for the conference title at 5-2, but Whitewater gets the nod on tie-breakers. LAST TIME OUT: Stout: The only stat that counts is the one on the scoreboard. The Blue Devils outgained Whitewater, but could not capitalize on opportunities, while the Warhawks did in a 24-21 win over Stout. Whitewater jumped out to a 17-0 first quarter lead, but Stout came back with 14 points in the second quarter. Stout had a chance to tie just before half, but missed the field goal. The Warhawks jumped out to a 24-14 lead when they blocked a third quarter attempted field goal and returned it for a TD. Stout was stopped on fourth-and-goal at the one on the next series, then were intercepted on the following drive. Stout did drive for a TD with 50 seconds remaining to pull to 24-21, but could not recover the onside kick. Stout had a 24-9 lead in first downs and 343-216 advantage in total yards. La Crosse: Leading 14-9, the Eagles shut down a potential Eau Claire comeback when Dustin Powell returned an interception 90 yards for a score, to take a 20-9 lead midway through the fourth quarter. The Eagles intercepted the ball on Eau Claires next drive, this time Josh Moon snagging the ball in the Eagles own end zone. The Eagles drove again and Andrew Macadlo rushed 24 yards for the final, 26-9, score. Eau Claire finished with 338 total yards, while La Crosse tallied 268 total yards with a balanced attack, rushing for 138. LAST SEASON: Stout and La Crosse are members of the eight-team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). Last season, Stout was 6-3 overall, 4-3 (tied for third with River Falls) in the WIAC. The Blue Devils were WIAC champions in 2000. La Crosse was 4-6 overall, 3-4 in the WIAC (tied for fifth). THE SERIES: The Eagles hold a commanding 61-10-5 lead in the series that began in 1913, but the Blue Devils have won the last two meetings, including a 10-7 win to conclude the 2001 season. With the score tied at 7-7, Eric Moe intercepted a pass with 1:34 remaining in the game and Justin Zymewski booted a 30-yard field goal with 10 seconds left on the clock for the win. Stout scored one play after Joe Kersten recovered a fumble deep in the Eagles territory early in the first quarter. La Crosse coach Larry Terry (17-12) is in his 3rd season. BUNDGAARD BAROMETER: Luke Bundgaard is tied for third with Steve Burr (1976-79) on the UW-Stout all-time scoring list with 162 points. Kicker Kevin McCulley (1997-2000) has 163 points and Scott Frederickson (1986-89) is the all-time leading scorer with 178 points. STOUT COACH ED MEIERKORT SAYS: "I thought we had worked our back into the game, but it was Whitewater's turn to win a game. We thought we played a smart game, but with our inability to make a field goal, our confidence in the kicking game is waning. "La Crosse is playing well, and is figuring out how to win games. Their quarterback is playing well, and (receiver) Matt Rizzo is one of the best receivers in the league. This is a conference championship game. I can't emphasize that enough. Anytime we can play for the top spot, at home, at the end of the season, we have done well. Our seniors want to go out with a bang. This is a game we have to win. Period." RADIO: WMEQ 880 AM, Jake Bostrom, Steve Schrantz; the game will also be broadcast live over the Internet at www.wmeq.com November 9, 2002OPPORTUNISTIC WARHAWKS GET 24-21 WIN OVER STOUT WHITEWATER - The UW-Stout defense has been getting a lot of press, but it was the UW-Whitewater defense that proved opportunistic and upset the Blue Devils, 24-21, to send Stout into a tie for second place in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Warhawks (5-4, 4-2) jumped all over Stout (7-2, 4-2) in the first quarter, racking up 17 points before Stout came back with 14 points in the second quarter. The Blue Devils had a chance to tie just before halftime, but missed the field goal. The play of the game came midway through the third quarter when Stout attempted a 42 yard field goal to tie the game at 17, but the kick was blocked and Joe Mabry snagged the bouncing pigskin and dashed 66 yards to give Whitewater a 24-14 lead. The ninth ranked Blue Devils picked themselves up on the ensuing drive, putting together a 64-yard drive that stalled out on the Whitewater 1 on fourth down with three minutes remaining in the third period. Stout had four chances from inside the five, but were stopped on three rushes and a pass attempt. Whitewater halted Stout on their next drive on a three-and-out and on Stout's next drive, Fulton Bell intercepted quarterback Nick Ohman (So, Glenwood City). The Blue Devils tightened the score on the next possession, driving 72 yards in 14 plays as Ohman scored from one yard out with 50 seconds left in the game. Whitewater recovered the onside kick and the game ended. The Warhawks hit big at the 8:40 mark of the first quarer when Randy Borgardt connected with Jim Leszcynski for a 67-yard TD pass play. Four minutes later, Borgardt found Eric Stauss for a four yard TD pass play. Bell recovered a fumble late in the period, and Chad Wurth connected on a 42-yard field goal to push Whitewater ahead, 17-0.
