October 22, 2001BLUE DEVILS KEEP PLAYOFF HOPES ALIVE, HEAD TO POINT UW-Stout Blue Devils (4-2, 2-2) at UW-Stevens Point Pointers (4-2, 2-2)Saturday, Oct. 27, 1 p.m. Goerke Field, Stevens Point, Wis. ON THE LINE: The Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference can only be termed the "Wacky WIAC" this year, with just about everybody still alive for a chance at the title. UW-Eau Claire sits in the drivers seat with a 3-1 conference record, but Stout, along with this weeks opponent, UW-Stevens Point and four other schools, have 2-2 conference records, good for a six-way logjam at second. The winner is still in the race. The loser will need a lot of help and is likely out of the race, but this is the Wacky WIAC. LAST TIME OUT: Stout: After putting themselves into a deep, deep hole less than four minutes into the game, the Blue Devils dug their way out to take a 26-23 win over UW-River Falls, Oct. 20. The Falcons struck like lightning and scored three TDs in the first 3-minutes, 5-seconds to take a 20-0 lead. Stout came back with two scores in the first quarter, and another in the second to knot the score at 20 heading into the locker room. Justin Zmyewski booted his first collegiate field goal in the their quarter to give Stout a 23-20 lead, then kicked the game winner later in the quarter from 35-yards out. Stout had 248 total yards, 164 by pass. River Falls got all 223 of their yards on the ground. Stevens Point: UW-Oshkosh scored two fourth quarter touchdowns and went on to knock off Stevens Point, 38-31 at Oshkosh, Oct. 20. The Pointers never led in the game, but twice pulled to within three points and tied the score at 24-24 in the third quarter when Kurt Kielblock scored from eight yards out and Ricardo Vega booted a 42-yard field goal. The Pointers scored with 1:21 left in the fourth, but the onside kick went out of bounds and the Titans ran the clock out. The Pointers racked up 427 total yards, 226 through the air, all by QB Scott Krause. The defense gave up 415 yards, 300 by pass. LAST YEAR: Stout and Stevens Point are members of the eight-team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) and are both affiliated with the NCAA Division III. Stout was 10-1 overall, 7-0 (first) in the WIAC, and completed an NCAA Division III record turnaround finish. The season ended with a 26-19 first round NCAA Division III playoff loss to eventual Division III runner-up St. John's. The Pointers finished the season at 2-8 overall, 1-6 (sixth) in the WIAC. THE SERIES: This is the 57th meeting (Stevens Point leads, 40-14-2) in a series that began in 1913 with a 24-6 Stout win. Last seasons 16-8 Stout win turned out to be the catalyst to launch the Blue Devils to the conference crown. The first conference game of the season, Stout took a 16-0 halftime lead and rode that to the win, even though the Pointers scored midway through the fourth quarter. The Pointer offense was held to 110 total yards as Stout allowed minus-10 yards rushing. Stout finished with 288 total yards, 218 on the ground, including Luke Bundgaards second consecutive 100 yard game when he carried 21 times for 101 yards. COACHES: Stout coach Ed Meierkort (40-47 career) is in his ninth year and has the most wins of any Stout football coach. Pointer coach John Miech (89-45-2) is in his 14th year with the Pointers. STOUT COACH ED MEIERKORT SAYS: "(About the early 20-0 deficit against UW-River Falls) When we took the timeout, I told the team they couldnt look at what just happened. I told them we will take an organized approach to get out of this hole. We needed to get back the momentum bit by bit and we will deal with the scoreboard at halftime. Its the first time I have had 100 guys listen to me. The defense really took over. Look, River Falls scored only three points in the final 56 minutes."Stevens Point is one of the powers in the league. They have big, strong kids with a solid running game and play well at home. Scott Krause is a mobile quarterback who can hurt you with his feet and his arm. John Miech is too good a coach to let what happen last year happen again. This is a big game for us, its a big game for them - just another day at the office in the WIAC. We must take care of business." RADIO: WMEQ 880 AM, Jake Bostrom, Steve SchrantzOctober 20, 2001BLUE DEVILS COME FROM BEHIND TO DOWN RIVER FALLS, 26-23MENOMONIE - First, UW-Stout shot themselves in the foot. Then UW-Stout buried themselves in a hole. Then UW-Stout starting digging out. Finally, UW-Stout healed thyself as the Blue Devils came back from a 20-0 first quarter deficit to down UW-River Falls, 26-23, Saturday, Oct. 20 at Don & Nona Williams Stadium. On Stout's first series, the Falcons blocked a Blue Devil punt deep in Stout territory and Aaron Griesen returned the ball two yards for a score. A missed extra point attempt gave the Falcons a 6-0 lead with not even two minutes off the clock. On the ensuing kickoff return, Stout (4-2, 2-2) fumbled the ball at their own 21, and two plays later, Rob Ohman ran 20 yards for the touchdown. The point after gave the Falcons a 13-0 lead with 12:12 showing on the clock. On the following drive, Stout quarterback Nick Ohman (Fr, Glenwood City) fumbled after he was sacked by Jeremy Larson, and Larson scooped the ball up and waltzed into the end zone from two yards out. River Falls led, 20-0, and not even five minutes was off the clock. Somehow, the Blue Devils pulled themselves together and Nick Ohman quickly redeemed himself when he ran for 37 yards on first down and connected on two passes to Tony Beckham (Sr, Ocala, Fla), the second one a 27-yard hook-up that Beckham took into the end zone. The Blue Devil defense would stiffen, and linebacker Steve Anderson (So, Stanley) recovered a Rob Ohman fumble at the River Falls 30. Two plays later, Stout's Nick Ohman found Julio Vargas (Fr, Luxemburg) for a 27-yard touchdown, to pull Stout to within seven points, 20-13 with 27 left in the first quarter. A Chris Parent (Fr, Racine) 64-yard punt put the Falcons (2-4, 2-2) in the hole on their own 7, and the defense held. Matt Kren (Fr, Neillsville) returned the short River Falls punt 14 yards to the Falcons' 27. Eric Baker (Sr, Sarona) rushed two yards, and Ohman completed two passes to Vargas for a total of 24 yards to the Falcons' 1, where Baker got the call with five minutes left in the half. A Justin Zmyewski (Fr, Houston, Minn) knotted the score at 20-20 at halftime. Stout took their first lead of the game in the third quarter, when punt returner Kren returned the ball 30 yards to the Falcons' 28. After failing to move the ball, Zymewski came in to nail his first collegiate field goal, a 46-yarder. River Falls answered back with a 12-play drive to the Stout 22, but Taylor Hall was dumped for a one-yard loss and Falcons had to settle for a 39-yard, Adam Bergdahl field goal to tie the score with 1:18 remaining in the third quarter. Stout would get what would prove to be the game-winning field goal from Zymewski, a 35-yarder that just made it over the crossbar with 8:07 left in the game. An offensive pass interference on River Falls put the Falcons deep in the hole late in the game. Facing second-and-26, Hall ripped off a 26-yard gain, good for a first down, the last first down Stout would give up in the game, as the Blue Devils stuffed Hall on fourth-and-three at the Stout 30 with 1:44 left. River Falls called two timeouts, and Stout could not run the clock out, forcing a punt which the Falcons' Aaron Griesen returned 15 yards to the River Falls 48. On the Falcons' second play, Eric Moe (Jr, Whitehall) intercepted the Falcons' quarterback Dustin Vogelgesang and returned the ball, but Stout penalties wiped out the gain. With only three seconds remaining, Stout ran out the clock. The Blue Devil defense held the potent River Falls' attack to 223 yards, all on the ground. Stout picked up 248 yards, 151 rushing, 164 through the air. The Falcons' Rob Ohman led all rushers with 103 yards, while Hall finished with 82 yards. Luke Bundgaard (So, Weyerhauser) finished with 55 rushing yards. Nick Ohman rushed for 15 yards, but was sacked seven times. Ohman completed 10-of-16 passes for 164 yards. Beckham hauled in four catches for 75 yards. Vargas had three catches for 52 yards. Kren returned three punts for 65 yards. The Blue Devils fumbled the ball four times, losing it three times, while River Falls lost one fumble. Stout will be at UW-Stevens Point, Saturday, Oct. 28. October 19, 2001WARHAWKS DROP STOUT SOCCER TEAMWHITEWATER - UW-Whitewater's Wendy Scott scored the only goal of the game to hand UW-Stout a 1-0 loss in Whitewater, Friday, Oct. 19. In a game that saw only eight shots by Stout and five shots by Whitewater (9-7, 4-4), Scott got the game-winner in the 61st minute. The loss knocks Stout (10-7-1, 4-4) out of the possibility of hosting a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) playoff game Tuesday, Oct. 23. The Blue Devils will play at UW-Eau Claire. The game was a make-up game from Sept. 15 when Stout suspended all athletic competition the weekend following the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, DC. October 16, 2001BLUE DEVILS HOLD THEIR OWN AGAINST STEVENS POINTMENOMONIE - For more than a half, it looked like UW-Stout would have a chance to perhaps notch their first win against perennial soccer power UW-Stevens Point, but the Pointers stacked two goals within 10 minutes in the second half and went on to a 4-1 win at Nelson Field, Tuesday, Oct. 16. Blue Devil (10-6-1, 4-3) goalkeeper Jessie Sutherland (Sr, Duluth, Minn), who had earlier in the day been named the WIAC defensive player of the week, swept aside three Pointer shots before the Pointers' Kelly Fink scored her first goal of the night with 10 minutes remaining in the first period. Fink came back with her second goal six minutes into the second stanza and Jenny Bruce tacked on another in the 61st minutes. The Pointers scored their final goal in the 84th minute. Two minutes later, Stout got their lone goal of the when Desiree Nardini (So, White Bear Lake, Minn) pushed a penalty kick to the left side of Pointer (12-1-0, 8-0) goalkeeper Brianna Hyslop. The Pointers outshot Stout 17-4, but the Stout defense restricted the Pointers to eight shots on net. With the win, Stevens Point recorded their fifth consecutive WIAC title and ninth in 10 years. October 16, 2001JESSIE SUTHERLAND NAMED WIAC PLAYER OF THE WEEKMENOMONIE - After holding four opponents scoreless for more than 225 minutes, UW-Stout goalkeeper Jessie Sutherland (Sr, Duluth, Minn) was named the WIAC defensive player of the week. Working the first half of each of the four games, Sutherland did not allow a goal. The streak was broken when UW-Stevens Point scored with 10 remaining in the first half, Oct. 16.
October 20, 2001BLUE DEVILS DROP THREE CLOSE GAMES TO OSHKOSHMENOMONIE - The first two games couldn't get much closer, but unfortunately for UW-Stout, the Blue Devils were on the short end of both of them and dropped a 3-0 decision to UW-Oshkosh, Saturday, Oct. 20 at Johnson Fieldhouse. With the games tight throughout the contest, Oshkosh took a 32-30 and 31-29 decision in the first two games before Oshkosh had a bit of an upper hand in the third, winning 30-26. Kim Roshell (Sr, Cornell) had 12 kills to lead Stout (19-6, 5-2), while Brooke Palmer (Sr, Mantorville, Minn), who was playing on a hobbled leg, finished with 11 kills. The Titans (24-3, 6-1) were led by Jessie Goffard and Kristi Kujak led all players with 19 kills each. Christina Southward had 41 assists, while Stout's Laura Bogenschutz (So, Baxter, Minn) had 35. The Blue Devils will be at Viterbo University, Monday, Oct. 22. Trailing 19-13 in the third game after winning the first two games by identical scores, the Warhawks came back to take a 30-25 win. The game scores weren't indicative of the play seen on the court throughout the night as both teams battled through several very long volleys. The Blue Devils (19-5, 5-2) got no players in double digit kills, with Kim Roshell (Sr, Cornell) leading the way with nine kills. Lindsay Mensink (Fr, Ostrander, Minn), Brooke Palmer (Sr, Mantorville, Minn) and Rachel Eidet (Sr, North Mankato, Minn) each finished with six kills.
