October 1, 2001UW-Stout Blue Devils (3-0, 1-0) at UW-Oshkosh Titans (1-2, 0-1)Saturday, Oct. 6, 1:30 p.m. Titan Stadium, Oshkosh, Wis. ON THE LINE: As the defending Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) champion, anytime UW-Stout plays someone will be trying to knock them off their lofty perch. This week, the Blue Devils travel to UW-Oshkosh for the Titans' homecoming game. Under second year head coach Phil Meyer, the Titans have switched from a heavily-weighted throwing game to a more conventional balanced attack, and that is not soon enough for the Blue Devils who have faced three consecutive teams that liked to wing the ball. Stout is ranked eighth in the latest AFCA NCAA Division III poll. LAST TIME OUT: Stout: The Blue Devils shook off the rust of a 21-day layoff and christened their new Don & Nona Williams Stadium with a 28-14 win over a much improved UW-Platteville team, Sept. 29. Platteville took a 14-7 lead into the locker room, but Stout, for the most part, shut down their passing game in the second half, and capped that performance off with four interceptions in the fourth quarter. Kevin Dewey, Eric Moe, Mark Ralph, and Abraham Cruz - on a tip by Tony Beckham - each had an interception in the quarter. Dewey had stopped a Pioneer drive in the first half with an interception in the end zone and Stout converted that into a score. Julio Vargas caught two TD receptions, one in the second quarter and one in the fourth, and Luke Bundgaard scored two rushing TDs in the fourth quarter. Platteville outgained Stout, 462-420, with the Pioneers getting 455 in the air, seven on the ground. Stout went the other way, gaining 263 yards by the rush, 157 in the air. Oshkosh: Oshkosh and UW-Eau Claire combined for 33 points in the final 12 minutes of the second quarter, but it was the Blugolds that came out on top, 40-26 in the wild affair. The Blugolds held a 24-19 lead six minutes into the third quarter after Oshkosh scored a field goal, then buried the Titans with a 16-point flurry. Nick Weber gave Oshkosh a fighting chance late in the game when he scored his second TD of the night halfway through the fourth in what would be the eventual final score. Oshkosh finished the night with 416 total yards, 198 passing, 218 rushing, but gave up 456 yards, 166 on the ground, 290 in the airwaves. LAST YEAR: Stout and Oshkosh are members of the eight-team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) and are both affiliated with the NCAA Division III. Stout was 10-1 overall, 7-0 (first) in the WIAC, and completed an NCAA Division III record turnaround finish. The season ended with a 26-19 first round NCAA Division III playoff loss to eventual Division III runner-up St. John's. The Titans finished the season at 3-7 overall, 1-6 (tie for sixth) in the WIAC.THE SERIES: This is the 45th meeting (Oshkosh leads, 24-19-1) in a series that began in 1947 with a 19-12 Oshkosh win. Last season, Stout's 37-21 win clinched at least a tie for the conference title. Luke Bundgaard rushed for 155 yards and two TDs, but it was Tony Beckham's 85-yard kickoff return in the third quarter that sparked the win. Oshkosh had pulled to within 24-14 after a Stout fumble late in the quarter and deep in Stout territory. Stout got the clincher halfway through the fourth quarter, and Oshkosh added a score just before time ran out. DEFENSIVE LOOK: Oshkosh: multiple 5-2; Stout: 3-4 COACHES: Stout coach Ed Meierkort (39-45 career) is in his ninth year and has the most wins of any Stout football coach. Oshkosh coach Phil Meyer (4-9) is in his second year with the Titans.STOUT COACH ED MEIERKORT SAYS: "We expected to be a little rusty out of the gate, but it has been 21 days since we played. I thought the field position our punter (Chris Parent) gave us was very important, putting seven punts inside the 20. We were playing without Jamie (Spielman), then we lose (safety Rob) Weinstein right away. Steve Anderson came in and did good job. This was the first time this year we faced adversity and we handled it well. We had some guys who stepped up make the plays, and that was the difference in the game. "Oshkosh is a more balanced attack, and it will be nice to see the run. We have (already) seen a season's worth of passes. This is a marquee game for Oshkosh. It's their homecoming and they are playing a nationally ranked team. They can't ask for a better game. They have a steady dose of the inside running game, and their quarterback is one of the best in the league. We also have to know where Shannon King is at all times. We expect another third, fourth quarter game." RADIO: WMEQ 880 AM, Jake Bostrom, Steve SchrantzSeptember 29, 2001BLUE DEVILS BREAK IN NEW STADIUM ON RIGHT FOOTMENOMONIE - For a long time, it looked like UW-Stout's first experience in their new home was not going to be a good one. UW-Platteville amassed more than 300 yards in the first half and rolled to a 14-7 halftime lead before the Blue Devils (3-0, 1-0) took control in the third quarter and used four fourth quarter interceptions to go on to a 28-14 win over the Pioneers Saturday, Sept. 29, at the new Don & Nona Williams Stadium. With Pioneer quarterback Tom Stetzer completing 22-of-42 passes for 286 yards in the first half alone, the Pioneers dominated the playing surface, outgaining Stout, 307-172 total yards. The Pioneers (1-3, 0-1) scored with about four minutes left in the first quarter when Stetzer connected with Matt Kent for a 31-yard scoring pass play. The teams traded punts for most of the second quarter, but the Pioneers drove to within striking range when Kevin Dewey (So, Burnsville, Minn) picked off his first of two interceptions, this one a diving catch in front of the Pioneers' receiver in the end zone. Quarterback Nick Ohman (Fr, Glenwood City) rushed for 11 yards, Luke Bundgaard (So, Weyerhauser/Bruce) picked up 33 yards and junior quarterback Matt Lonergan (Hartford) connected with tight end Brian Johnson (Sr, Hudson) for 22 yards to the Platteville 10. Lonergan found Julio Vargas (So, Luxemburg/Southern Door) in the corner of the end zone to knot the score with 2:11 left in the quarter. But the Pioneers took the halftime lead as Stetzer passed eight consecutive times, hooking up with Reggie Davis for an 11-yard score with 19 seconds left. The Blue Devil defense shut the Pioneers down in the third quarter, allowing them only one first down. Stout tied the score at 14 early in the fourth quarter, but had to start on their own 8. Fullback Eric Baker (Sr, Sarona/Spooner) gave the Blue Devils life when he rumbled 44 yards down the home sideline. Ohman completed a 23 yards pass to Mark Bergman (Sr, Grantsburg) to the Platteville 20, then Ohman carried the ball to the 13. On the next play, Vargas snagged his second touchdown of the game with 13:41 showing on the clock. Dewey pulled down his second interception on the next drive. Stout was forced to punt, but Eric Moe (Jr, Hixton/Whitehall) intercepted Stetzer to set up Stout's next score. After five yard Baker run to the Platteville 36, Ohman ran 35 yards and Bundgaard carried the ball over from one yard out to give Stout their first lead of the game, 21-14, with 9:36 remaining in the game. Undeterred Stetzer led to the Stout 32, but was intercepted for the fourth time of the game, this time by Mark Ralph (Jr, Colfax), who returned the ball 62 yards to the Platteville 16. Bundgaard carried twice, and scored with 6:17 left in the game to put the score at what would be the final, 28-14. The Pioneers moved the ball to the Stout 48, but he was picked off for the fifth time, when Abraham Cruz (So, Alhambra, Calif) snagged the tipped ball. Stout did get to within field goal range, but the kick was wide. Platteville did not give up and drove to the Stout 1 with three seconds left in the game, but John Adler's dive was turned back for no game by Mark Johnson (So, Hudson) and Joe Kersten (So, Menasha) as time expired. The Pioneers outgained Stout, 462-420 total yards. Stetzer finished the game completing 39-of-71 passes - both school records - with 446 yards, but had the five interceptions. Greg Siebers pulled down 11 passes for 126 yards, Jason Leonard had 10 passes for 78 yards, Dan Mueller seven receptions for 81 yards and Matt Kent five catches for 94 yards. Stout amassed the majority of their yards on the ground, picking up 263 yards, with Bundgaard leading the way with 75 yards on 16 carries. Mike Etim (Jr, Brooklyn Park, Minn) rushed seven times for 74 yards, Baker six times for 60 yards and Ohman 14 times for 54 yards. Lonergan completed 6-of-13 passes for 96 yards, Ohman 4-of-12 for 42 yards and punter Chris Parent (Fr, Racine) connected on one pass for 19 yards to Nate Rykal (Chippewa Falls/Cadott). Stout will be at UW-Oshkosh, Saturday, Oct. 6 at 1:30 p.m.

Sivertsen took one dribble and blasted the shot into the far post to give Stout (5-2-1, 2-0) the win. The Blue Devils did have an opportunity to score with five minutes remaining in regulation. Carrie Schrank (Fr, Reedsburg) pitched a corner kick into the pack in front of the net and Rachel Anderson (Fr, Victoria, Minn) headed the ball over the goalkeeper, but the ball was cleared by a La Crosse defender.
