September 24, 2001UW-Platteville Pioneers (1-2, 0-0) at UW-Stout Blue Devils (2-0, 0-0)Saturday, Sept. 29, 6 p.m. Don & Nona Williams Stadium or Nelson Field ON THE LINE: It will have been 20 days in between games for UW-Stout as they open up defense of their 2000 conference title by hosting UW-Platteville. The Blue Devils' game with Willamette University, Sept. 15, was cancelled due to concern over air travel because of the terrorist actions out east. Stout had scheduled a bye Sept. 22 and now look forward to lining up against someone other than themselves. This is the third consecutive predominately passing team Stout has seen. The Blue Devils were ranked eighth in the Sept. 18 AFCA Division III poll. LAST TIME OUT: Stout: The Blue Devil defense put up a stellar performance, recording seven sacks against Franklin College, Sept. 8, and recovering two fumbles - one for a touchdown - and two interceptions - again, one for a touchdown. Chuck Vander Linden's two sacks resulted in fumbles, and Abe Cruz returned one 11 yards for a score. Tony Beckham and Eric Moe each nabbed a pass. Luke Bundgaard scored from three yards to open the game, with the drive beginning after Vander Linden's first forced fumble. Luke Rykal blocked a punt, setting up Stout's second score, a 34-yard jaunt by quarterback Nick Ohman. Ben Tarkowski ended Stout's scoring with a 20 yard reception from Ohman. The Grizzlies added a score late in the third period. Stout tallied 318 total yards, 214 on the ground, 104 in the air. The Grizzlies had 265 total yards, 268 by pass, minus-3 on the ground. Platteville: Pioneer receiver Jason Leonard caught 17 passes for 187 yards and quarterback Tom Stetzer was 33-for-69 for 364 yards, both school records, but it wasn't nearly enough as Platteville fell 51-13 in a non-conference game at Platteville, Sept. 22. The Pioneers racked up 400 total yards, but gave up 670 - 405 on the ground - as Stevens Point scored five second half TDs. LAST YEAR: Stout and Platteville are members of the eight-team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) and are both affiliated with the NCAA Division III. Stout was 10-1 overall, 7-0 (first) in the WIAC, and completed an NCAA Division III record turnaround finish. The season ended with a 26-19 first round NCAA Division III playoff loss to eventual Division III runner-up St. John's. The Pioneers finished the season at 2-8 overall, 1-6 (tie for sixth) in the WIAC.THE SERIES: This is the 45th meeting in a series that began in 1935 with a 25-7 Platteville win. The Pioneers put perhaps one of the biggest scares into the Blue Devils last season, taking 35-24 lead well into the fourth quarter before Stout racked up 19 points in the final nine minutes of the game to take a 43-35 win at Platteville. Luke Bundgaard ran wild for the Blue Devils, tying a school record when he scored four touchdowns, and snapped records for most rushes in a game (45) and most yards in a single game (335). The Pioneers passing game lit Stout up for 483 yards and racked up 465 total yards. Quarterback Tom Stetzer accounted for all of Platteville's throwing yardage, with Troy Gagner collecting seven passes for 190 yards and Jim Richardson pulling down five aerials for 167 yards. After Stout came to play, they finished the game with 524 total yards, 419 on the ground. Platteville coach Mike Emendorfer is in his third year (8-15).STOUT COACH ED MEIERKORT SAYS: "(With the big break between games) this is almost like starting the season over. This will be like our first game, and we may make some first game mistakes. But, we have been able to work some things on offense and defense we may have not been able to. The break also gave us some time to heal "We are back in the WIAC, and we need to play a physical game against Platteville. We will lean on them with our running game and try to knock their quarterback down. They will try to spread us out. Our defense has something to prove after last year. We were embarrassed by them last year, and our defense is waiting to redeem themselves. We watched the film several times, and we were really bad in that first half." September 21, 2001FRESHMAN COMBINATION GIVES STOUT GAME WINNING GOALSPRING VALLEY - UW-Stout soccer took their show on the road and came up with a 3-1 win over Northland College, in what was certainly the first collegiate soccer game played in Spring Valley, Friday, Sept. 21. Poor field conditions kept the Blue Devils off Nelson Field, but Stout (4-2-1) did not need the home field advantage as they got the winning goal from Krista Hight (Fr, Brookfield) midway through the second half. Carrie Schrank (Fr, Reedsburg) assisted on the goal. The two teams played to a scoreless first half as the fog carried across the field from the nearby lake. Stout drew first blood when Desiree Nardini (So, White Bear Lake, Minn) took a pass from Diane Ehlen (So, Bloomington, Minn) and raced a good distance of the field to score 10 minutes into the second half. Anne White knotted the score for Northland (3-5) two minutes later. It took 10 minutes for Stout to get Hight's go ahead and eventual game winner. Nellie Sivertsen (Jr, River Falls) gave the Blue Devils an insurance goal with 17 minutes left in the game, taking a corner kick from Kate Knoespel (Jr, Green Bay) and finding the back of the net. Melissa Ballweg (Fr, Merrimac) recorded her first collegiate win, despite giving up a goal, while playing 40 minutes of the second half. Stout returns to conference action Tuesday, Sept. 25 when they travel to UW-La Crosse, then head to UW-Oshkosh, Friday, Sept. 28. September 18, 2001BLUE DEVIL SOCCER OPENS CONFERENCE SEASON WITH A WINMENOMONIE - UW-Stout broke a three-game scoreless streak in a big way as they opened their conference season with a 6-1 win over UW-Superior, Tuesday, Sept. 18 at Nelson Field. The Blue Devils, who have been off for more than a week, needed only 11 minutes to get on the board when Desiree Nardini (So, White Bear Lake, Minn) scored unassisted. Superior helped the Blue Devils' cause when they tipped a Kristi Field (So, Bloomington, Minn) shot into the net only minutes later. Stout (3-2-1, 1-0) continued to strafe the Superior goal - they got off 20 shots on goal in the first half - as the Blue Devils' leading scorer, Nellie Sivertsen (Jr, River Falls) took assists from Sarah Geiger (So, West Bend) and Field with 17 minutes gone. Superior (0-4) got on the board for the first time this season when Melissa Dreger scored at the 19 minute mark. Stout answered back three minutes later when freshman Krista Hight (Brookfield) took well executed passes for Rosa Cambray (So, Delavan) and Carrie Schrank (Fr, Reedsburg). Field jumped out immediately in the second half, scoring unassisted with only a bit more than a minute off the clock. The Blue Devils finished off the scoring in the final minute of the game when Geiger put a header on a corner kick by Kate Knoespel (Jr, Green Bay). Sivertsen's goal made her the all-time point scorer in Blue Devils history. Stout outshot Superior 41-2. The Yellowjackets Ashley Nicholls stopped 28 shots on the night, while Melissa Balweg (Fr, Merrimac) got Stout's only save of the night in the second half.

The Blue Devils kept the Pointers (2-5, 0-2) off balance for the first two games, but the Pointers did make things close in the third game, taking a 25-24 lead at one point. Stout tied the score at 28 and Amanda Huber (Fr, St. Peter, Minn) served the last two points. Stout ended up with 12 service aces.
