WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD END OF THE SEASON
May 24, 2002JENNEY LUER WINS NATIONAL DISCUS TITLEST. PAUL, Minn - UW-Stout's Jenney Luer (Sr, Colfax) lived up to her billing and won the NCAA Division III discus title, Friday, May 24 at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn. With the win, Luer becomes UW-Stout's first-ever women's national champion. Luer entered the meet as the No. 1 seed in the event and actually won the event during the preliminaries with a toss of 159-feet, 9-inches. Luer increased her distance in the finals round with a throw of 160-1, a Macalester Stadium record. Luer topped the 2001 national champion, Kathy Darling of Johns Hopkins University. Darling, a junior, finished second with a mark of 157-6 in the final round. Luer came into the meet with a school record mark of 175-1. Earlier this spring, Luer earned her first All-America award when she finished third at the indoor national championships in the shot put. May 25, 2002JENNEY LUER, LAURA VERDEGAN EARN ALL-AMERICA HONORSST. PAUL, Minn - UW-Stout's Jenney Luer (Sr, Colfax) and Laura Verdegan (So, Tony) both earned All-America honors on the final day of the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn., Saturday, May 25. Luer, coming off her national title in the discus the previous day, garnered her second All-America award of the meet by placing seventh in the shot put with a throw of 45-feet, 3-inches. Luer was an All-America earlier this spring at the indoor championships. Verdegan placed fifth in the triple jump to take home her second All-America wreath of the year with a jump of 39-6.50. Earlier this season, Verdegan placed third at the indoor championships in the triple jump. As a team, Stout scored 16 points - quite possibly the most points scored by a Stout women's team at the national meet - and tied for 16th place. May 24, 2002LAURA VERDEGAN EARNS ACADEMIC AWARDMENOMONIE - UW-Stout's Laura Verdegan (So, Tony)was named to the 2002 Verizon/CoSIDA District V Academic Track and Cross Country second team. Verdegan, who posts a 3.97 grade point average in dietetics, advanced to the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the triple jump and the long jump and placed third at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships in the triple jump. Verdegan set the school record in the indoor triple jump this spring (38-feet, 4.75-inches) and placed second at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) indoor championships only three days after completing the basketball season. Verdegan was the WIAC champion in the outdoor triple jump and tied the school outdoor record in the long jump (18-4.50). Verdegan was named the Stout team co-valuable field performer. In addition, Verdegan was a starter on the Blue Devil basketball team that won the 2001-02 WIAC title and she was named to the all-WIAC first team and the all-WIAC defensive team.
May 25, 2002DAVE HANSON PLACES THIRD IN FINALS OF 400-HURDLESMENOMONIE - UW-Stout's Dave Hanson (Jr, Sun Prairie) placed third to earn All-America honors in the 400-meter hurdles at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Saturday, May 25, at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn. Hanson finished in a time of 52.45 seconds. Derek Toshner of UW-La Crosse won the event in a season best time of 51.26.
