May 17, 2002SARAH KOKKE NAMED SOFTBALL MVPMENOMONIE - Sarah Kokke (Sr, Galesville), the UW-Stout softball team's only senior, was named the team most valuable player, coach Chris Stainer announced at the team's annual awards banquet, Thursday, May 16. Kokke wore the term "team leader" on her sleeve all season and won the respect of her teammates both on the field and off. Kokke, the team's second baseman, batted .322 (19-59) with two doubles, two home runs and 12 RBI. She also stole three bases, drew eight walks and fielded at a .901 clip. Kokke also received the "Best Leader" award. Pitcher Molly Kraft (Fr, St. Louis Park, Minn) was named the team's rookie-of-the-year, Kaela Wold (Fr, Altoona) took home the slugger award, Jamie Gorges (Fr, New London) was named most improved and Erin O'Connell (Fr, Altoona) earned the golden glove award and shared the most dedicated award with Sara Jensen (Jr, Eau Claire). Kraft was the workhorse of the Blue Devils' pitching staff, making 21 appearances out of 25 possible games. Kraft posted a 3.65 earned run average and was 5-12 on the very young team. Kraft pitched 109.1 innings and recorded a team-high 38 strikeouts, while giving up 18 walks. Wold was a first team All-WIAC choice who led the Blue Devils in hitting and RBI, hitting at a .409 clip (27-66) with 14 RBI. She finished with a slugging percentage of .712, ranking her third on the Stout single season list. Wold worked her way into the starting line-up in the outfield. Gorges became the team's starting catcher and improved her batting average to .304 (21-69), fourth on the team. She recorded seven doubles, one home run and 11 RBI. O'Connell was the Blue Devils' starting first baseman from Day One and committed only two errors in 162 chances for a fielding percentage of .988, just short of the school record of .991, but best-ever for a first baseman. Super-Sub awards went to: Michele Harvieux (So, Centerville, Minn) for pinch hitting, Leslie Barkin (Fr, Buffalo Grove, Ill) for pitching and Liz Riebe (Fr, Grafton) for pinch running. Heather Novalany (Fr, Cottage Grove, Minn) received the spirit award. Stout finished with an overall record of 9-16, 3-9 in the WIAC and tied for fifth in the WIAC tournament.

May 14, 2002MATT LUNDE NAMED TO ALL-WIAC BASEBALL TEAMMENOMONIE - UW-Stout pitcher Matt Lunde (Sr, Eau Claire) was named to the 2002 All-WIAC Baseball first team. Designated hitter Jon Kroening (So, Ladysmith), catcher Justin Biever (Jr, South Milwaukee), first baseman Brad Barneson (Sr, Strum) and right fielder JW Dachel (Sr, Bloomer) were named to the honorable mention squad. For the season, Lunde posted a 3.78 earned run average (ERA) with a 7-4 overall record and threw a whopping 78.2 innings. Lunde, the team's iron man on the mound, made 17 appearances, started nine games and completed three games. Lunde notched a save, the same day he earlier had pitched a complete game, allowed 33 earned runs, 16 walks and struck out 53. In his four-year career, Lunde pitched a school record 247 innings, posted a career ERA of 3.64, allowed 100 earned runs, 63 walks and finished second on the school all-time strikeout list with 144. Dan Larsen holds the record with 147 strikeouts. Lunde also finished second on the Stout career list for least walks allowed per inning with .26 and finished in the top 10 in hits allowed with 1.08. Dachel led the Blue Devils in runs batted in with 35 and hit at a .315 clip (46-146). Dachel slugged out a team-high eight home runs, including an in-the-park homer at the Metrodome in March, and had 11 doubles. Dachel joins Lunde on several Blue Devil career lists, including at-bats (472, 7th), runs scored (87, 13th), hits (155, 9th), doubles (34, tied for 2nd), and RBI (101, 12th). Kroening saw action in 29 games, mostly as the designated hitter, and led the team in batting average with .374 (37-99). He finished with seven doubles, a triple, two home runs and 22 RBI. Barneson batted at a .338 clip (44-130) and had seven doubles, three triples, six home runs and 20 RBI. At first base, Barneson fielded at a 98 percent average, committing only six errors in 305 chances. On the mound, Barneson worked 9.2 innings over seven appearances, started one game and had an ERA of 2.79. Biever provided consistent hitting throughout the season, hitting .368 (42-114) with five doubles, three home runs and 27 RBI. Stout finished the season at 18-20 overall, and tied for fourth in the WIAC with a 12-15 record.
May 17, 2002VERDEGAN REACHES NCAA QUALIFIERS IN THREE EVENTSNORTHFIELD, Minn - Laura Verdegan (So, Tony) reached three NCAA Division III national marks at the St. Olaf Qualifier, Friday, May 17 at Northfield, Minn. Verdegan, who had been concentrating primarily on the long and triple jumps, timed in at 64.55-seconds in the 400-meter hurdles to put her name on the hurdle list for the first time in her collegiate career. Verdegan hit good distances in the long (17-feet, 11.75-inches) and triple (38-3.50) jumps, but did not exceed her previous season bests. Marci Schachtner (Fr, Deer Park) tossed the hammer 136-9. Jenney Luer (Sr, Colfax) competed at the UW-Oshkosh Qualifier, Saturday, May 18, in the shot put and the discus, but results were not available. Luer, Verdegan and Schachtner have all reached NCAA qualifying marks. Luer is the top seed in the discus and No. 3 in the shot put. Verdegan has automatically qualified in the triple jump and provisionally qualified in the hurdles and long jump. Schachtner has provisionally qualified in the hammer. The NCAA will announce the qualifiers to the national meet scheduled for May 23-25 at Macalester College late Monday evening.
May 14, 2002VERDEGAN IMPROVES TIME IN HURDLE EVENTST. PAUL, Minn - Laura Verdegan (So, Tony) hit a career-best in the 400-hurdles, but it still wasn't enough to send her to the national meet in the event. Verdegan took first place in three events, Tuesday, May 14, at the St. Thomas Qualifier, coming in at 1-minute, 5.47-seconds in the hurdles, still short of the NCAA Division III provisional qualifying time. Verdegan took the long jump with a leap of 17-feet, 8-inches, and the triple jump with a mark of 38-3.50. Neither jump exceeded her best distances of the year. Verdegan is automatically qualified to nationals in the triple jump and provisionally qualified in the long jump. Jenney Luer (Sr, Colfax) long ago punched her ticket to nationals in the discus and shot put, ranking No. 1 in the discus and No. 3 in the shot. Tuesday, Luer continued to stay loose in each event, throwing the discus 152-3.50 and the shot 44-9.75. Marci Schachtner (Fr, Deer Park) was trying to improve her distance in the hammer throw, but marked a throw of 142-8.50, more than 60 feet over her first attempt of the year in March, but well short of the provisional mark she reached last week.
May 17, 20024X400 RELAY TEAM HITS NATIONAL QUALIFYING TIMENORTHFIELD, Minn - UW-Stout's 4X400-meter relay team reached the NCAA Division III provisional qualifying time, Friday, May 17 at the St. Olaf Qualifier, at Northfield, Minn. Jim Dvorak (Fr, New Prague, Minn), Dave Hanson (Jr, Sun Prairie), Kevin Riester (Jr, Red Wing, Minn), and John Hanson (Sr, Grantsburg) finished second to a team from St. Thomas, recording a time of 3-minutes, 16.66-seconds. The team will have to wait until late Monday evening to find out if they will advance to the national meet, May 23-25 at Macalester College. Lewis Cassellius (So, Glenwood City) took the pole vault with his second best leap of the season (14-9). John Hanson was fourth in the 800-meter run (1:59.94) and Dave Huber (Jr, Mendota Heights, Minn) was fourth in the 1500 (4:11.10). Dave Hanson is the only Blue Devil to assure himself a trip to the national meet. Hanson automatically qualified in the 400-hurdles. Cassellius and Jeff Rotering (Sr, Waumandee) have provisonally qualified in the pole vault and Huber has provisionally qualified in the 10,000-meter run.
May 14, 2002DAVE HANSON, JEFF ROTERING GARNER TOP TRACK AWARDSMENOMONIE - National qualifiers Dave Hanson (Jr, Sun Prairie) and Jeff Rotering (Sr, Waumandee) were named as the UW-Stout most valuable track performer and most valuable field performer, respectively, Blue Devil coach Keith Ellingson announced Monday, May 13 at the team's annual awards banquet. Hanson, a hurdler and sprinter, repeats as the team's most valuable track athlete. Hanson was a double winner at the 2002 WIAC indoor championships, taking the 400- and 55-hurdle events, earning co-MVP of the meet award. In the outdoor season, Hanson finished second at the WIAC meet in the 400-hurdles and last week broke the 13-year-old hurdle school record with a time of 52.20-seconds, automatically qualifying for the outdoor national championships next week. Rotering placed third at the indoor national meet in the pole vault and set a new indoor school record in the event with a leap of 16-feet, 3.25-inches. Rotering has provisionally qualified to the national outdoor championships and was runner-up at the WIAC outdoor meet. Freshmen of the year awards went to sprinters Brady Hurtgen (Ridgeland) and Taylor Hustad (Colfax). Senior hurdler Jeff Miller (St. Louis Park, Minn) was awarded the most improved award after knocking off almost five seconds from his 400-hurdle time and distance runner Dave Huber (Jr, Mendota Heights, Minn) was named most inspirational. Along with Rotering and Dave Hanson, John Hanson (Sr, Grantsburg), and Bryan Ott (Sr, Monroe) served as 2002 team captains. Dave Hanson, Huber, Tim Faber (Jr, Fond du Lac) and Sam Werner (Jr, Elk Mound) were chosen as 2003 team captains.
