BLUE DEVILS FALL IN OPENERS TO WINONA STATE

WINONA, Minn - While UW-Stout was opening their regular season, Winona State was well into their season and the Warhawks downed the Blue Devils, 7-4, 8-0, Thursday, March 28 in Winona, Minn.

Stout held a 4-1 lead in the third, but NCAA Division II Winona (19-7-1) scored four runs in the bottom of the third, then added two more runs in the fifth.

After Winona took a 1-0 lead with a home run in the first, Stout went to work in the second inning with two outs. Pitcher Molly Kraft (Fr, St. Louis Park, Minn) walked and Carrie Ruda (So, Merrillan) reached on a single to right field. Scooter Aspen (So, Eau Claire) kept the inning alive when the catcher dropped her popped up bunt, then threw the ball away to allow Kraft to score. A wild pitch scored Ruda from third and Aspen moved to third on the play. Kim Caswell (So, Stanley) plated Aspen with a double to center field.

Stout added a run in the third when Kaela Wold (Fr, Altoona) hit her second of three doubles to lead off the inning. Jamie Gorges (Fr, New London) drove in Wold with a double to left.

But that would be it as Winona scored four run in the fourth, with most of the damage coming on Rachel Siefert's second home run, this time a three-run shot.

In the nightcap, the Warhawks jumped out for two runs in the first, then doubled the score with two runs in the fourth and doubled the score again in the fifth with four more runs to end the game on the eight run rule.

Erin O'Connell (Fr, Altoona) got Stout's only hit, a lead off second inning single to the third base side.

Stout is scheduled to open their home portion of the schedule Wednesday, April 3 when they host UW-Eau Claire at 4 p.m. at Wakanda Park, then are scheduled to host the UW-Stout Invitational, April 6-7.

JENNEY LUER SETS TWO MEET RECORDS AT AUGUSTANA

ROCK ISLAND, Ill - Jenney Luer (Sr, Colfax) came all by herself, but the UW-Stout senior thrower walked away with two first place finishes, two meet records, two NCAA qualifying marks and a school record as she competed in a meet at Augustana College, Friday, April 29 in Rock Island, Ill.

Luer was the lone Blue Devil to participate in the otherwise dual meet between Augustana and UW-La Crosse but definitely made her mark, winning the shot put in an NCAA Division III provisional qualifying distance and the discus in an automatic qualifying distance.

Luer tossed the shot put 43-feet, 3-inches and threw the discus a school record 152-feet, 2-inches. The shot put record is only four inches short of the school record of 43-7 set by Terri Tretsven in 1992. Luer bettered her own school record (151-11) in the discus.

The Blue Devils will be at the St. Thomas Invitational Saturday, April 6.
