February 2, 2002BLUE DEVILS DOWN UW-OSHKOSH, 72-71, TO STAY IN FIRST PLACEMENOMONIE - The free throw line was not kind to UW-Stout down the final stretch, but it was from the charity stripe the Blue Devils would seal a 72-71 win over UW-Oshkosh, Saturday, Feb. 2, to stay in sole possession of first place in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). In front of a Johnson Fieldhouse crowd of more than 1200, the hometown Blue Devils had allowed Oshkosh to come back from a 15 point lead and even take a 70-69 lead with 1:51 left in the game. Stout (17-4, 12-1) could not keep the Titans at bay, missing 5-of-7 free throws in a nearly seven minute stretch that saw Oshkosh (16-5, 9-3) claw their way back. But down, 71-70, Stout's Tanya Halbach (Jr, Janesville) made the front end of two free shots with six seconds left in the game to tie the score. Five seconds later, Halbach was fouled on top of the key with 1.7 seconds left. Halbach missed the first chance and then was iced by Oshkosh with a full timeout. A minute later, Halbach stepped to the line and tweaked the twine for the win. Oshkosh tossed the ball downcourt, but the ball was tipped out of bounds with .3 seconds left and the Titans could not get the ball towards the hoop in time. The first half was fairly even, but Stout went on a 15-8 run in the final four minutes to take a 40-34 halftime lead. Stout built up as much as a 15 point lead midway through the second half, built largely on Halbach's eight points during the run. The Titans started to attack inside as well as forcing 13 second half Stout turnovers to turn the game around. After Halbach's bucket with 5:15 left, Stout did not score from the floor again. Halbach led Stout with 17 points. Sara Kahl (So, Menomonie) had 14, and Stacie Anderson (Sr, Clayton) added 12. The Titans' Jamie Turtenwald led all scorers with 19 points. Melissa Schweitzer chipped in 18 points and Kristin Steckmesser and Kay Mikolajczak each had 11 points. Stout will be at UW-River Falls, Wednesday, Feb. 6, then will close the home portion of the regular season when they host UW-Whitewater, Saturday, Feb. 9 at 3 p.m. January 30, 2002BLUE DEVILS HOLD OFF EAU CLAIRE, STAY IN FIRST PLACEEAU CLAIRE - When it came down to crunch time, UW-Stout made their free throws and made the big plays, coming out of a battle on the winning side with a 71-65 decision at UW-Eau Claire's Zorn Arena. The win keeps Stout in sole possession of first place in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). In a game that featured 18 lead changes and 10 ties, Stout (16-4, 11-1) took the lead for good with 4:09 remaining in the game when Sara Kahl (So, Menomonie) connected on a lay-up for a 62-61 lead. Amy Zelinger (Sr, Racine) followed that up 30 seconds later with two shots from the line to give Stout a 64-61 lead. The Blugolds' Kristi Channing - who finished with a game-high 23 points - pulled Eau Claire back to within two, 64-63, with three minutes left. Lindsey Erichsen (Fr, Spring Valley, Minn) broke a 90 second scoring lull by both teams with 1:38 left, giving Stout a 66-63 lead. Channing added another bucket with a minute remaining to tighten the score at 66-65. Erin Churchill (Fr, Plum City) gave Stout a three point, 68-65 lead from the line. Stacie Anderson (Sr, Clayton) went to the line with 21 seconds left, dropping the first, but missing the second. Eau Claire (17-3, 9-3) worked the ball to their end of the court, getting inside, but Stout's Laura Verdegan (So, Tony) blocked a shot to Zelinger who raced coast-to-coast for the lay-in and the final score. Stout had a balanced attack, with Tanya Halbach (Jr, Janesville) scoring 12 points. Verdegan and Kahl each tossed in 11 points. Lindsey Williams had 10 points for Eau Claire. Coupled with a Blue Devil win in December at Johnson Fieldhouse, this marked the first time Stout has swept Eau Claire since the 1996-97 season, the last time Stout won the conference title.
February 2, 2002BLUE DEVILS FALL TO UW-OSHKOSH, 66-64, IN OVERTIME AGAINOSHKOSH - Overtime and UW-Oshkosh have not agreed with UW-Stout. For the second time this season, the Blue Devils fell to the Titans in overtime as Oshkosh took a 66-64 win in Oshkosh, Saturday, Feb. 2. The Titans (16-4, 8-4) took a five point lead in overtime, but the Blue Devils whittled the lead down. Jeff Vandenberghe (So, Coon Rapids, Minn) nailed a 3-pointer with 17 seconds left to pull Stout (11-10, 6-7) to within one, 65-64. The Titans' Scott Sowinski sealed the win for Oshkosh with a single free throw with seven seconds left. Stout trailed 27-23 at halftime, but came back to take as much as a five point lead with 2:38 left in the second half. The Titans took a one point, 55-54 lead with a minute remaining. Nate Templer (So, Beaver Dam) went to the line for the Blue Devils to sink one free throw with 37 seconds left to send the game into overtime. The Titans had a marked advantage from the free throw line, hitting 22-of-35 charity shots and nailed 5-of-6 charity shots in overtime The Blue Devils were no slouches from the line, though, nailing 13-of-14 chances. Templer led Stout with 14 points before fouling out. Steve Krueger (Sr, Three Lakes) had 12 points and Barrington Smith (Jr, Oklahoma City, Okla), 11. The Titans' Nate Miller led all scorers with 17 points. Nick Scherer and Sowinski finished with 13 points. The Blue Devils held the conference's leading scorer, Tim Dvorak, to 11 points, 12 points under his average. Stout returns to Johnson Fieldhouse, to host UW-River Falls, Wednesday, Feb. 6 at 7 p.m. The Blue Devils will be at UW-Whitewater, Saturday, Feb. 9. January 30, 2002EAU CLAIRE GETS LAST SECOND TIP-IN TO EDGE BLUE DEVILS, 69-67MENOMONIE - UW-Eau Claire's Andy Witte tipped in a missed shot by Jason Larson with 8.9 seconds left in the game to give the Blugolds a 69-67 edge-of-the-seat win over UW-Stout, Wednesday, Jan. 30 at Johnson Fieldhouse. Eau Claire (11-10, 3-9) had only moments before taken their first lead of the game since very early in the contest when Larson, playing after missing the last three games, connected on a lay-up to give Eau Claire a 65-63 lead with 1:18 left. Stout's Steve Krueger (Sr, Three Lakes), but Larson again gave Eau Claire the lead. Stout's Dave Larson (Sr, La Crescent, Minn) tied the game at 67-67 with 25 seconds remaining. Eau Claire broke the Blue Devils' full court pressure, and Jason Larson pulled up from near the top of the arc. The shot hit the front of the iron, rebounded off and Witte tossed the ball down the twine. Stout (11-9, 6-6) had a couple of shots at the basket, but could only draw iron. Throughout the second half, Stout would build a slight lead, but the Blugolds - in particular Steve Syrjala - nailed a number of 3-pointers to keep Eau Claire close. Syrjala led all scorers with 25 points, pouring in six 3-pointers, four in the second half. Eau Claire finished with 12 long distance bombs. Eau Claire got 13 points each from Larson and Ryan Wietor. Stout was led by Andy Bray (Fr, Menominee, Mich) with 12 points. Krueger, Barrington Smith (Jr, Oklahoma City, Okla) and Dave Loewe (Sr, Hiles) each finished with 10 points. Both teams shot better than 60 percent in the second half, with Eau Claire hitting 61.5 percent (16-26) and Stout shooting 64 percent (16-25). For the game, Eau Claire shot 49.1 percent and Stout, 48.3 percent.
