January 26, 2002BLUE DEVILS DOWN PIONEERS, 77-64, STAY IN FIRST PLACEMENOMONIE - In a game where turnovers made a difference, UW-Stout came out better in the deal and handed UW-Platteville a 77-64 defeat, Saturday, Jan. 26 at Johnson Fieldhouse. The win keeps Stout in sole possession of first place as the Blue Devils (15-4, 10-1) look towards next week when they face perennial powers UW-Eau Claire and UW-Oshkosh. But the Blue Devils could not afford to look past the Pioneers (10-9, 5-6), and it looked like Stout's fast break offense was going to blow Platteville out of town on a stiff, southerly wind. Stout jumped out to a 14-0 lead with only three minutes gone, and forced six Platteville turnovers in that stretch. Stout built the lead up to 37-25 at halftime, and never allowed Platteville any closer than five points the rest of the way. Not that it didn't look like Platteville was going to catch up. Behind 25 points - 16 in the second half - and 12 rebounds by the conference's leading scorer, Crystal Stietz, Platteville always appeared within striking distance. Amy Zelinger (Sr, Racine) scored 11 of her 14 points in the first half for Stout and Stacie Anderson (Sr, Clayton) scored 10 of her 14 points in the second half to pace the Blue Devils. Laura Verdegan (So, Tony) and Tanya Halbach (Jr, Janesville) each pitched in 13 points on the evening. Grace Foster added 11 points for Platteville. The teams combined for 60 total turnovers, with Platteville committing 35 and Stout, 25. The Blue Devils will be at Eau Claire, Wednesday, Jan. 30 and will host Oshkosh, Saturday, Feb. 2 at 3 p.m. January 23, 2002BLUE DEVILS COME FROM BEHIND TO DOWN LA CROSSE, 95-84LA CROSSE - UW-Stout trailed for most of the first 32 minutes of their conference contest with UW-LaCrosse, but did take control for the final eight minutes to snag a 95-84 win over the Eagles, Wednesday, Jan. 23 in La Crosse. The Blue Devils (14-4, 9-1) trailed for most of the game until the 8:07 mark of the second half when they took a one point lead. The teams knotted the score three time before the Blue Devils took over. Bonnie Thoe (So, Hayfield, Minn) tossed in four points. Sara Kahl (So, Menomonie) followed that with a five point outburst and Lindsey Erichsen's (Fr, Spring Valley, Minn) layup gave Stout a 10 point, 87-77 lead, with 2:06 left. Kahl added four more points in a 20 second stretch near the minute mark. The teams wore a path into the hardwood heading to the free throw line, taking a combined 73 free throw attempts. Stout drained 29-of-41 free throws, while the Eagles (6-11, 2-7) canned 20-of-32. Both teams put together a balanced scoring effort. Stout was led by Erichsen with 14 points. Laura Verdegan (So, Tony) and Thoe added 12 points and Ann Schachtner (Fr, Somerset) tossed in 11 points. The Eagles got 18 points from Brooke Croshier and Amanda Cushman. Shelley Bakken added 17 points, Yasmin Johnson 14 and Karen Berg 10.
January 26, 2002BLUE DEVILS CAN'T FIND WIN AT PLATTEVILLE, FALL 58-51PLATTEVILLE - UW-Stout has not won at UW-Platteville's Williams Fieldhouse since March 1, 1986. The streak got a little longer as the Pioneers downed the Blue Devils, 58-51, Saturday, Jan. 26 in Platteville. The Blue Devils (11-8, 6-5) missed their first nine shots from the floor, and did not score a point until Steve Krueger (Sr, Three Lakes) cut into Platteville's lead to make it 17-2. But Stout did make a game of it. After trailing 34-27 at halftime, Stout pulled to within 50-49 when Barrington Smith (Jr, Oklahoma City) nailed a 3-pointer with 5-minutes, 19-seconds remaining. The Pioneers held Stout scoreless for the next four-plus minutes when Ben Luer (Fr, Wasilla, Alaska) scored Stout's final points with 34 seconds remaining. The Pioneers (13-7, 6-5) got 18 points from Bryan Stangel, 11 points from Mario Boyd and 10 points from Tyler Selk. Nate Templer (So, Beaver Dam) led Stout with 13 points, while Smith knocked down 12 points. Krueger finished with 10. Krueger was kept off the boards, hauling down only two rebounds. The loss ended Stout's four game winning streak and extended the Pioneers' streak to five games. Stout will host UW-Eau Claire, Wednesday, Jan. 30 at 7 p.m., the will travel to UW-Oshkosh, Saturday, Feb. 2. January 23, 2002EXTRA EFFORT SPURS BLUE DEVIL RUN, STOUT DOWNS EAGLES, 78-63MENOMONIE - An extra effort dive by Dave Larson (Sr, La Crescent, Minn) to save a ball heading out of bounds seemed to put life back into UW-Stout as the Blue Devils went on a 17-2 run in the second half to down UW-La Crosse, 78-63, Wednesday, Jan. 23 at Johnson Fieldhouse. With the score tied at 43-43 at the 13:59 mark, Larson's diving effort saved the ball for Stout (11-7, 6-4). While the Blue Devils did not score off the possession, they would not allow the Eagles (12-6, 5-4) to score again for four minutes and carried the lead out to a 60-45 margin with just under six minutes remaining. The Eagles would get as close as seven points, but Stout held off the Eagles' 3-point barrage by going 16-of-21 from the free throw line in the final 3-minutes, 31-seconds. The Blue Devils connected on their last 11 free throw attempts. Steve Krueger (Sr, Three Lakes) led a very balanced Stout attack, scoring 13 points, as did Jeff Vandenberghe (So, Coon Rapids, Minn). Krueger also pulled down 10 rebounds. Casey Chapman (Jr, Hartland) and Andy Bray (So, Menominee, Mich) each tossed in 11 points. Larson finished with nine points. Stout held a big lead off the glass, pulling down 40 rebounds to La Crosse's 25. Stout shot 52 percent, while limiting the Eagles to 38 percent shooting, including 34 percent in the second half. The Eagles' Matt Schultz led all scorers with 20 points, while Eddie Hebert added 18 points. The two teams played to a near draw in the first half, with La Crosse taking a 31-30 lead into the locker room. The first half featured six lead changes.
January 26, 2002OVERTIME SPELLS ANOTHER LOSS FOR BLUE DEVILSSTEVENS POINT - Overtime has not been kind for the UW-Stout hockey team. In six previous overtime games, Stout has won one, tied one and lost four. Make it five overtime losses as the Blue Devils dropped a 4-3 overtime decision at UW-Stevens Point, Saturday, Jan. 26. Both teams assumed leads in this contest and Stout (9-11-1, 2-8-0) opened up the game when Tony Ross (So, Buffalo, Minn) scored 5-minutes, 5-seconds into the game. But the Pointers (13-8-0, 6-4-0) scored two goals to take a 2-1 lead into the first intermission. After a scoreless second period, the Blue Devils added two goals in rapid succession in the third period. Joe Berry (Sr, Apple Valley, Minn) opened the period with a goal two minutes into the third, and Mitch Kellin (So, Cohasset, Minn) gave Stout a 3-2 lead only a minute later. The Pointers' Zenon Kochan tied the game midway through the period with a shot from the slot. The Pointers needed only 46 seconds and one shot to pick up the overtime win as Ryan Feil took the pass in front of the net and fired in the winner. Stout's Jeff Dotson (So, Chanhassen, Minn) absorbed the loss and kicked out 36 shots. The Pointers' Bob Gould had 26 saves. Stout lost earlier in the season, 2-1, to Stevens Point in overtime. Stout will be at St. Scholastica, Friday, Feb. 1, and at UW-Superior, Saturday, Feb. 2. January 24, 2002BLUE DEVILS ROLL OVER EAU CLAIRE, TAKE 8-2 WINEAU CLAIRE - Derek Nichols (Jr, Victoria, Minn) scored a hat trick to lead UW-Stout's assault as the Blue Devils buried UW-Eau Claire, 8-2, in a flurry of goals, Thursday, Jan. 24 at Hobbs Arena in Eau Claire. The Blue Devils (9-10-1, 2-7 NCHA) never gave the Blugolds (9-9-2, 4-4-1) any breathing room as they scored two first period goals and three second period goals before Eau Claire got on the board late in the second period. Stout repeated the effort, opening the third period with three more goals. The power play was one of the Blue Devils' strong suits, scoring on 3-of-7 opportunities, while allowing no goals in five power play chances. Nichols was the beneficiary of the power play, scoring two power play goals. The Blue Devils' Mitch Kellin (So, Cohasset, Minn) got Stout going the opposite way though, scoring an unassisted, shorthanded goal only five minutes into the game. Nichols picked up his first goal three minutes later. Nathan Legler (So, Lakeville, Minn) started things off in the second stanza, going in almost uncontested at the 1:26 mark. Nichols scored seven minutes later, then picked up the hat trick at the 12:30 mark. The Blugolds' Joe Byrd broke up Jeff Dotson's (So, Chanhassen, Minn) shutout just before the break. Charlie O'Hearn (So, Traverse City, Mich), John Schaffner (Fr, Janesville) and Cale Finseth (So, Austin, Minn) scored in the first 10-minutes, 7-seconds of the third period to close out Stout's scoring. The Blugolds scored a final goal. Kellin, Legler, Cullen Flaherty (Jr, Duluth, Minn), Tony Ross (So, Buffalo, Minn) and Joe Berry (Sr, Apple Valley, Minn) each had two assists. Tony Tomaino (Fr, Duluth, Minn), playing in his first game as a Blue Devil, picked up his first Stout assist. O'Hearn and Nick Legler (Fr, Lakeville, Minn) each had an assist. Dotson finished with 39 saves and picked up his sixth win on the season. For his efforts, Dotson was named the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA), Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) and the United States College Hockey On-line (USCHO) player of the week. Dotson, a 6-3, 180 pound sophomore, stopped 57 River Falls shots to help his team to the win. The win was the first for the Blue Devils over the Falcons in 22 years. Dotson made 19 saves in the first period, 21 in the second, 15 in the third and two in overtime. The USCHO award, for which Dotson was named the Division III defensive player of the week, is the first-ever for a UW-Stout hockey player to receive a national award since Stout returned to varsity status for the 1996-97 season.
