OSHKOSH - UW-Stout committed 19 turnovers in the first half and went on to turn the ball over 34 times in the game, allowing UW-Oshkosh to take over sole possession of first place in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) as the Titans handed the Blue Devils an 88-60 loss at Oshkosh, Saturday, Jan. 5.

The Titans (12-2, 5-0) took advantage of the first half turnovers to jump out to a 42-25 halftime lead, then extended their lead to more than 20 points in the second half.

Oshkosh got 25 points from Kristen Steckmesser, 21 points from Brenda Utech and 16 points from Kay Mikolajczak.

While the Blue Devils (10-4, 5-1) held a 34-30 advantage off the glass, they hit 43 percent of their shots compared to 56 percent for the Titans.

Freshman Lindsey Erichsen (Spring Valley, Minn) was the only Blue Devil in double figures, as she tossed in 10 points. Amy Zelinger (Sr, Racine) and Sara Kahl (So, Menomonie) each added nine points.

Stout will look to rebound when they host UW-Superior, Wednesday, Jan. 9 at 7 p.m. Stout will be at UW-Whitewater, Saturday, Jan. 12.

MENOMONIE - Erin Churchill (Fr, Plum City) sank two free throws with 33 seconds remaining giving UW-Stout a lead that UW-River Falls could not come back from. The Blue Devils came out on top with a final score of 63-57, Wednesday, Jan. 2 at Johnson Fieldhouse.

The turning point in the game came with eight minutes left in the second half when Amy Zelinger (Sr, Racine) came up with the defensive rebound and took it coast-to-coast giving the Blue Devils (10-3, 5-0 WIAC) a 45-43 lead, a lead Stout would not give up.

Previous to Zelinger's bucket, Sara Kahl (So, Menomonie) stole the ball and hit a 3-pointer to tie at 43-43.

The substitutions in the game rivaled that of a hockey game, with both teams making countless substitutions throughout both halves looking to find the right combination of players to get the job done offensively.

The Falcons (7-6, 1-4) took a 26-25 lead into the locker room at halftime and built that up to a four point, 41-37, at the 11:18 mark.

Turnovers were a big part of the game, with River Falls turning the ball over 27 times to Stout's 26 turnovers.

The top scorers for the Blue Devils were Zelinger with 13 and Kahl putting in 11. Churchill scored only six points, but came away with a career-high 12 rebounds.

MENOMONIE - UW-Oshkosh's Nate Miller hit a runner in the lane with a half second remaining to send the game into overtime and the Titans scored 11 points from the free throw line in the extra stanza to down UW-Stout, 73-68, Saturday, Jan. 5 at Johnson Fieldhouse.

After nearly three minutes of scoreless ball near the end of the game where both teams missed a number of opportunities, the Titans (11-2, 3-2) took the ball with 10 seconds remaining and worked the ball around until Miller got open to send the game into overtime.

In overtime, Tim Dworak scored six points, Miller five and Nick Scherer four as the Titans went 11-for-12 from the charity stripe.

Stout (7-6, 3-3) took a 62-57 lead early in overtime on a 3-pointer from Nate Templer (So, Beaver Dam) from the top of the key and a lay-up by Steve Krueger (Sr, Three Lakes). But the Titans went to work from there for the win.

Stout shot out to an early lead in the game, taking a 22-10 lead with six minutes left in the first period. Three Stout turnovers around the 4:30 mark helped the Titans cut the Stout lead, but the Blue Devils led at halfime, 25-21.

Oshkosh took the lead midway through the second period, but Stout regained the lead on a three point play by Krueger with 3:17 left in regulation. Stout extended the lead to 57-53 on a layup by Casey Chapman (Jr, Hartland) with 2:55 left. Stout did not score again in regulation.

Dworak led all scorers with 29 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. Schrerer finished with 19 points and Miller 18.

Jeff Vandenberghe (So, Coon Rapids, Minn) led Stout with 15 points. Chapman and Krueger each added 13 points.

Stout will be at UW-Superior, Wednesday, Jan. 9 and will host UW-Whitewater, Saturday, Jan. 12 at 7 p.m.

January 2, 2002

RIVER FALLS - UW-River Falls jumped out to quick lead and never trailed as the Falcons dumped UW-Stout, 79-61, Wednesday, Jan. 2 at River Falls.

The Falcons (10-2, 3-1) shot out to a 17-6 lead and never allowed Stout (7-5, 3-2) to get any closer than 10 points as they carried a 19 point, 45-26, lead into halftime. River Falls held as much as a 23 point lead a couple of times in the second stanza.

The Falcons had four players in double digits, led by Matt Kukla with 27 points. Edmund Johnson had 14 points, Rich Melzer finished with 13 and Kent Becker had 10.

Jeff Vandenberghe (So, Coon Rapids, Minn) was the Blue Devils' bright spot on offense, scoring 15 points in the second half to finish with 18 points. Barrington Smith (Jr, Oklahoma City, Okla) had 13 points and Nate Templer (So, Beaver Dam) 11. Stout's leading scorer, Steve Krueger (Sr, Three Lakes) was held to only two points, almost 14 points below his average.

The Falcons did a job on the boards, outrebounding Stout, 32-18.

Men's Ice Hockey

January 5, 2002

MENOMONIE - Dan Nortsten scored 14 seconds into overtime to lift St. Olaf over UW-Stout, 2-1, Saturday, Jan. 5 at the Dunn County Ice Arena.

The Oles won the overtime faceoff and worked the puck to in front of the net where Norsten put the puck home.

All of the scoring in regulation came in the third period. The Oles' Jordan Bronce scored only 35 seconds into the third stanza, but Stout (5-9-1) got the equalizer 9-minutes, 35-seconds into the period when Charlie O'Hearn (So, Traverse City, Mich) took a pass from Dan Winkler (So, Brooklyn Center, Minn).

Stout's Ben Plester (Sr, Chemainus, BC) recorded 36 saves and the Oles' Garrett Hasti turned away 28.

The overtime was Stout's fifth overtime game of the season, all on the Blue Devils' home ice.

The Blue Devils will host the Milwaukee School of Engineering Friday, Jan. 11 at 7:30 p.m. and again Saturday, Jan. 12 at 2 p.m.

January 4, 2002

ST. PETER, Minn - UW-Stout erupted for three goals in the third quarter to stop their winless streak at five with a 5-3 win over Gustavus Adolphus, Friday, Jan. 4 in St. Peter, Minn.

The Gusties opened the third period with a goal four minutes into the stanza to take a 3-2 lead, but Pete Eloranta (So, River Falls) scored unassisted two minutes later to knot the score.

Joe Berry (Sr, Apple Valley, Minn) got the game-winning goal with seven minutes left in the game, getting an assist from senior captain Aaron Decker (Sr, Mound, Minn). Only 36 seconds later, Eloranta picked up his second goal of the evening, taking a pass from Drew Nichols (Jr, Victoria, Minn).

The Blue Devils got on the board first when Berry scored on a power play with an assist from Nate Legler (So, Lakeville, Minn) four minutes into the contest. The Gusties' Aaron Allar answered back two minutes later, again on a power play. Gustavus (8-6-0) took the lead on a Jerod Klava goal, but Stout knotted the score late in the period when Adam Balach (Fr, Duluth, Minn) scored his first collegiate goal.

Jeff Dotson (So, Chanhassen, Minn) recorded 32 saves in goal for Stout, while Gustavus goalie Dan Melde had 17 stops.

Women's Gymnastics

RIVER FALLS - UW-Stout is off until Friday, Jan. 11 when they compete at Hamline University.
