November 11, 2001JEFF HAZUGA RECORDS FIRST NFL REGULAR SEASON STATSPHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Former UW-Stout standout defensive lineman Jeff Hazuga became the first known Stout alumni to play in a National Football League (NFL) game since the 1940s. Hazuga recorded one solo tackle on a kickoff return and an assisted tackle in the Minnesota Vikings' 48-17 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, Sunday, Nov. 11 in Philadelphia. Hazuga teamed with defensive back Tyrone Carter to stop Eagles' running back Duce Staley on first down late in the third quarter. Hazuga recorded his first solo tackle when he put the wraps on veteran kickoff returner Brian Mitchell after a 19-yard return at the Philadelphia 25 late in the fourth quarter. Hazuga, who had not dressed for any of the previous Vikings' regular games, went into the game listed third on the depth chart at right defensive end. Hazuga, who played one year at Stout after transferring from St. Cloud State, was the 2000 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) player of the year and was named to several All-America teams. Hazuga signed a free agent contract with the Vikings on April 23 and became the first Stout player to make an NFL regular season roster since Bob McRoberts was a member of a team based in Boston in the late 1940s. November 10, 2001ERIC MOE INTERCEPTION LEADS TO STOUT WINLA CROSSE - With the score tied at 7-7, Eric Moe (Jr, Hixton/Whitehall)intercepted a pass with 1-minute, 34-seconds remaining in the game and Justin Zmyewski (Fr, Houston, Minn) booted a 30-yard kick to lift UW-Stout to a 10-7 win at UW-La Crosse, Saturday, Nov. 10. The kick with 10 seconds left in the game gave Zmyewski a measure of accomplishment after the freshman had missed three field goals earlier in the game. The Blue Devils (6-3, 4-3) scored first when Joe Kersten (So, Menasha) recovered a fumble on the Eagles' first drive of the game deep in La Crosse territory. Stout needed only one play to score and Julio Vargas (Fr, Luxemburg) hauled in a 21-yard pass from quarterback Nick Ohman (Fr, Glenwood City) and Stout led barely three minutes into the game. The Eagles (4-6, 3-4) got their only score of the game on their first drive of the second half, finishing off the 37-yard drive on a 6-yard pass play when Josh Boraas hooked up with Matt Rizzo. The two teams traded series throughout the rest of the game until Moe picked off the Boraas pass and returned it 39 yards to the La Crosse 19 to set up the win. The intereception was Moe's eighth of the season and tied him for the most career interceptions in Stout history with 15. Stout's defense held down the normally potent La Crosse offense, allowing the Eagles only 228 total yards, 176 in the air, 52 on the ground. The Eagles were averaging 340 yards per game. Stout racked up 367 yards of offense on a very balanced attack, getting 185 by pass - all by Ohman who completed 14-of-27 passes - and 182 on the ground. Luke Bundgaard (So, Weyerhauser) tallied 90 yards to lead all rushers, while Eric Baker (Sr, Sarona) had 48. Ohman netted 39 yards, but was sacked four times. Ohman connected with tight end Brian Johnson (Sr, Hudson) three times for a game-high 66 yards. Rizzo hauled in five passes for 64 yards to lead the Eagles. Stout did not surrender a turnover for the second consecutive game. The win gives Stout their second consecutive winning season and their fourth in the last five years. The Blue Devils finished third in the conference. November 7, 2001ERIC MOE EARNS SPOT ON NATIONAL HONOR TEAMMENOMONIE - UW-Stouts Eric Moe (Jr, Hixton/Whitehall), a 6-foot, 190-lb. defensive back, was named as a national player of the week by the Don Hansen Football Gazette. Moe made the play that propelled UW-Stout to their 28-25 win over UW-Whitewater, Nov. 3. Trailing 14-13 midway through the third quarter, the Blue Devils had driven almost the full length of the field, but were stopped at the Whitewater 2-yard line. The Blue Devils trotted out their field goal team where Moe is the holder. Moe took the snap, shot out of the crouch, rolled to his right and stretched the ball over the goal line for his first collegiate touchdown. Also from his holder spot, Moe played a big part as the Blue Devils were 2-for-2 in field goals and 2-for-2 in extra points. Moe also matched his single season best when he snagged his seventh interception this season, outleaping the Whitewater receiver in the end zone to stop a Whitewater scoring threat early in the fourth quarter. A Whitewater touchdown would have put the Warhawks ahead at that point. Moe had seven interceptions last season and currently has 14 career interceptions, one short of the school record of 15 held by Jack Voigt from 1972-75. Moe leads the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) in interceptions. Moe had two solo tackles, four assisted tackles and two pass break ups in the game.

Forward Nellie Sivertsen (Jr, River Falls), who has scored a school record 32 career goals and has racked up 76 career points, received the honor Friday, Nov. 9. This season, Sivertsen scored 11 goals and added five assists to tally 27 points. Sivertsen finished sixth in the league in points and seventh in goals scored. The Blue Devils finished the season with a best-ever 10-9-1 overall record and were 4-4 in league play, finishing tied for fifth.

November 10, 2001SAINTS NOT SO SAINTLY, DOWN STOUT, 7-2MENOMONIE - UW-Stout has got to hope a pattern does not keep repeating itself. For the second consecutive weekend, the Blue Devils lost a Friday night overtime contest, then came back to get shelled the following Saturday. This weekend, the Blue Devils lost, 7-2, to previously winless St. Scholastica, Saturday, Nov. 10, at the Dunn County Ice Arena. Friday, Stout lost 5-4 in overtime to UW-Superior. The Saints (1-3-0, 1-3-0 NCHA) scored the first three goals of the game before Stout (2-4-0, 0-4-0) got on the board three minutes into the second period on a Mitch Kellin (So, Cohasset, Minn) shot. Scholastica added two goals within two minutes of the second period, sending Blue Devil goalie Jeff Dotson (So, Chanhassen, Minn) to the showers after 14 saves. Stout tightened the score to 5-2 when Joe Berry (Sr, Apple Valley, Minn) scored about a minute before the end of the second period. The Saints continued to pelt the Stout goal, added a couple of goals in the third period against Ben Plester (Sr, Chemainus, BC). Plester finished with 13 saves. St. Scholastica goalie Jason Nordby turned away 30 shots. The Saints Phil McDonald had two goals on the night. Stout will host Bethel College, Friday, Nov. 16 at 7:30 p.m., then will travel to Hamline University, Saturday, Nov. 17 for a 2 p.m. contest. November 9, 2001YELLOWJACKETS TIP BLUE DEVILS IN OVERTIMEMENOMONIE - UW-Stout is beginning to hate overtimes. In the second time in a week, the Blue Devil hockey team dropped a conference overtime contest, this time a 5-4 extra stanza affair to UW-Superior, Friday, Nov. 9 at the Dunn County Ice Arena. Stout fell behind 2-1 early, but came back to knot the score early in the third period. The game became a see saw contest, with the teams trading goals until overtime when Superiors Ryan Kalbrener picked up a rebounded shot off Stout goalie Ben Plesters (Sr, Chemanius, BC) leg pad and lifted it past Plester with 2:23 remaining in the overtime period. The Blue Devils (2-3-0, 0-3-0 NCHA) last Friday fell, 2-1 in overtime to UW-Stevens Point. Penalties really hurt Stout for the first time this season. Up to this game, the Blue Devils had not given up a power play goal all season, but gave up three to the Yellowjackets (1-2-0, 1-1-0), including the game winner. Superior had one second remaining in their power play when they ended the game. Superior scored nine minutes into the contest when Kyle Nosan scored. The Jackets doubled the score midway through the second period on a goal by Cris Hacket. The Blue Devils bounced back less than two minutes later when Aaron Decker (Sr, Mound, Minn) took a pass deep in Stouts zone from Nick Legler (Fr, Lakeville, Minn) and skated the distance to pierce the net. Cale Finseth (So, Austin, Minn) tied the score two minutes into the third period, with assists by Charlie OHearn (So, Traverse City, Mich) and Mitch Kellin (So, Cohasset, Minn). Superior took the lead only two minutes later when Colin Kendal scored. Stouts Bryan Cummings (So, Austin, Minn) tied the score at 3-3 with six minutes left in the period, on an assist by Joe Berry (Sr, Apple Valley, Minn), but the Yellowjackets Kendal scored his second goal only two minutes later to move the score to 4-3. Decker picked up the loose change from Drew Nichols (Jr, Victoria, Minn) with two minutes remaining in regulation to force the overtime and score his second goal of the evening. The Yellowjackets outshot Stout, 51-19, with Plester recording 46 saves. Superiors Nathan Ziemski had 15 saves. Updated: November 12, 2001 |
