They are a confident group and played hard last year. If we don't play well, we will get beat. There is no looking past teams for this group of (UW-Stout) players. This will be a battle of wills, with them throwing the ball and us trying to knock the quarterback down. We have to remember that we lost our last football game, and we lost it on Nelson Field. We don't want ghosts walking around there. We have got to take care of business and get a win, then move onto our new field."

THREE BLUE DEVILS NAMED PRESEASON ALL-AMERICA

MENOMONIE - Three UW-Stout football players have been named to the 2001 Don Hansen National Weekly Football Gazette Preseason All-America team.

Fullback Eric Baker (Sr, Sarona) was a second team pick, cornerback Tony Beckham (Sr, Ocala, Fla) was a third team selection and record-breaking running back Luke Bundgaard (So, Weyerhauser) was a fourth team choice.

Baker, a second team all-conference and third team all-region choice last season, was the Blue Devils' second leading rusher with 365 yards. Baker averaged 5.0 yards per carry and pulled down 14 passes for 81 yards and three touchdowns.

But it was Baker's blocking prowess that cleared the way for Bundgaard to reach a school record 1366 yards. Bundgaard, a first team all-conference pick, also set school records for most carries in a season (477) and single game records of most yards 335, most carries 45 and tied a school record for most points in a game when he scored four touchdowns. Bundgaard, who averaged 5.1 yards per carry, seven times rushed for more than 100 yards in a game.

Beckham is regarded as one of the top cover backs in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). Beckham led the Blue Devils with 14 passes broken up and returned his lone interception for a 24 yard touchdown. A first team all-conference selection, Beckham was the Blue Devils' lead kickoff returner, averaging 22.5 yards per return and returned on kickoff 85 yards for a score.

STOUT'S MORRIS NAMED TO COACH OLYMPIC DEVELOPMENT TEAM

MENOMONIE - UW-Stout women's soccer coach Dave Morris has been named to work with the Olympic Development Program (ODP), a joint effort by US Soccer and US Youth Soccer Association. Morris will coach a development team in Wisconsin's western district.

"In Wisconsin, the state ODP team practices in Milwaukee and Madison," Morris said. "To help identify out-state candidates, Wisconsin Youth Soccer Association (WYSA) is forming district ODP teams in various age groups."

Girls teams will begin to be assembled in 2001-02 in all eligible age groups. The team will practice in Menomonie and Menomonie should be host to some district ODP competitions, Morris said. The western Wisconsin district covers south to the La Crosse area, north to Superior, west to the state line and as far west at Tomah.

The program is a national identification and development program for high level players. The program identifies and develops youth players throughout the country to represent their state associations, region associations and the United States national teams in soccer competitions, Morris said.

ELLINGSON TABBED TO LEAD STOUT X-COUNTRY, TRACK PROGRAMS

MENOMONIE - UW-Stout has named Keith Ellingson as the Blue Devils' men's cross country and men's track & field coach.

Ellingson spent the last 15 years at Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa, where he headed up the men's cross country team for 15 years, the men's track and field team for 13 years and the women's cross country and track and field teams for seven years. Ellingson replaces Chris Hall, who left to coach the men's and women's cross country and track programs at the University of Chicago.

While at Simpson, Ellingson guided 56 student-athletes who have earned All-America status in cross country and track and field and has produced four individual national champions. In addition, his cross country and track & field squads have earned numerous academic honors, including being listed among the NCAA Division III all-academic top-20 teams several years. He has had 39 individuals in cross country and track receive academic all-conference honors in the past five years.

"This is an opportunity and great challenge to be in the Wisconsin system," Ellingson said. "Within the NCAA Division III, there is no better conference than the Wisconsin league, whether it is cross country, track or any other sport. That was very appealing to me."

A graduate of his hometown Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, Ellingson was familiar with the Wisconsin schools before he began his coaching career.

"For as long as I remember, the Wisconsin schools would come over and they were always competitive," Ellingson said. "That competitiveness was always exciting. I believe if our teams can respond to that competitiveness favorably in the conference, we will be competitive nationally."

During his Simpson tenure, Ellingson's men's cross country teams have finished in the upper half of the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) eight of 15 years and the womens team has finished in the top half five of seven years.

Ellingson began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Western Illinois, where he was an assistant coach for two then took over as head cross country and a track and field for a year. As a collegiate competitor, Ellingson ran on four IIAC championship squads for Luther College. He was named most valuable cross country performer of the 1977 league championship. Also a successful prep athlete, Ellingson ran on three Iowa high school state championship teams for Decorah High School.

After many years working with both men's and women's programs, Ellingson looks forward to focusing on one program.

"Working with just one gender will allow me to focus on the men's program," Ellingson said. "The needs of individuals changes considerably."

Ellingson earned his undergraduate degree from Luther College in Physical Education and his masters degree from Western Illinois University in Physical Education with an emphasis in sports management and human performance.

Active in national organizations, Ellingson held several offices with the NCAA Division III Cross Country Coaches Association and was the president of the organization from 1999-2000.

Ellingson and his wife Kristi have three daughters, Jessica, Catie, and Bailey. The Ellingson family currently resides in Indianola, Iowa, but intends to relocate to the Menomonie area.

LUTHER OLSON NAMED AS UW-STOUT WOMEN'S TENNIS COACH

MENOMONIE - Luther Olson, a native of Eau Claire and a four-year varsity singles player at North Central College in Naperville, Ill, has been named the UW-Stout women's tennis coach, athletic director Steve Terry announced today.

After a high school career at Eau Claire North where he advanced to the WIAA state tournament, Olson played four years of varsity tennis at North Central and three years was the team's No. 1 singles. As a senior, Olson was runner-up at No. 1 singles in the College Conference of Illinois/Wisconsin (CCIW).

"I know we have a younger team coming back," Olson said about his incoming Blue Devil team. "We will look at this year as a rebuilding year, a year where we can build the players' confidence, but we also can have some fun out there on the court."

At North Central, Olson was also an All-America cross country runner.

Olson has been a tennis coach at Eau Claire Memorial High School and a tennis instructor for five years at the Eau Claire YMCA. He was also the tennis instructor for five years at Red Arrow Camp, a summer-long camp near Woodruff in northern Wisconsin.

An elementary education major, Olson taught three years at the Boyceville Middle School and was the Boyceville High School head cross country coach for both boys and girls and was also the co-head track coach for girls and boys.
