October 9, 2000BLUE DEVILS FACE EAGLES IN BATTLE OF CONFERENCE UNBEATENS UW-La Crosse Eagles (3-2, 3-0) at UW-Stout Blue Devils (5-0, 3-0)Saturday, October 14, 1 p.m. Menomonie, Wis., Nelson Field ON THE LINE: What's on the line? Lone possession of first place in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. UW-Stout is undefeated and tied with UW-LaCrosse for the conference lead, both teams at 3-0 in league play. The Blue Devils are ranked eighth in the latest American Football Coaches Association poll. LAST TIME OUT: Stout: Kevin McCulley kicked the winning 41-yard field goal with less than five minutes remaining and the defense made the 17-14 lead stand as the Blue Devils stayed undefeated with a homecoming win over UW-Eau Claire, Oct. 7. Stout linebacker Eric Lund scored the first offensive TD of his college career when, lined up as the tailback, bulled over from five yards out in the first quarter. Eau Claire's Darrell Sourhada attacked next, picking up a 94 yard gain, then three plays later carried to tie the score. The Blugolds took the lead late in the first half when quarterback Tony Roller hit Jason Foemmel with a 15-yard pass play. Stout's Luke Bundgaard tied the game just before half on a 30-yard jaunt. McCulley hit the game winner with 4:47 remaining in the game. Bundgaard picked up 121 yards rushing, as the Blue Devils totaled 206 yards on the ground, 187 through the air (393 total yards) with Josh Antoni snagging seven passes for 92 yards. The Blugolds tallied 345 total yards, 155 on the ground (Souhrada had 190 rushing) and 190 passing (345 total). La Crosse: Passing was the name of the game as La Crosse blanked UW-Platteville, 30-0, but La Crosse added a stron running game to their game plan. The Eagles passed for 238 yards, but ran for 240 (478 total). Platteville passed for 258, but ran for only 83 (341 total). Mike Smith scored twice, once in the first and once in the fourth, and Andrew Youngbauer threw two TD strikes, one an 8-yard pass to Nick Wagner in the second and a 29-yarder to Jeff Kostrewa to open the fourth. Kostrewa hauled in six receptions for 94 yards. Andrew Mocaldo led the way with 139 yards rushing. LAST YEAR: Both Stout and La Crosse are members of the eight-team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) and are affiliated with the NCAA Division III. Stout was 2-8 overall, 1-6 (eighth) in the WIAC. The Eagles were 7-4 overall, 6-1 (1st tie) in the WIAC. THE SERIES: This will be the 74th meeting of the two teams and La Crosse holds a commanding lead in the series, 61-8-5. The Eagles took a 42-14 win last year in La Crosse. Tad Pieczynski scored twice, including the opening score in the first period. But Stout's Josh Antoni hauled in a 57-yard touchdown pass to knot the score. It was all LaCrosse from there, as the Eagles rapped off four straight TDs. Fullback Joe Rivard scored twice in the third quarter. Stout's Ryan Patt added a consolation score in the fourth, but the Eagles closed the door late with a 37-yard interception return for a TD. Stout has beaten La Crosse only in 1997 (28-21) over the last 10 seasons. DEFENSIVE LOOK: La Crosse: 4-3; Stout: 3-4 COACHES: Stout coach Ed Meierkort (31-44 career) is in his eighth year. La Crosse coach Larry Terry (28-30-1, 3-2 at La Crosse) is in his first at La Crosse and his sixth overall. Terry was an assistant coach at La Crosse for 12 seasons before taking over the position in June. He is also the brother of UW-Stout athletic director, Steve Terry. STOUT COACH ED MEIERKORT SAYS: "Our offense did a good job answering Eau Claire's touchdown. That took a lot of the anxiety level out of the defense. It's not a sin to give up two touchdowns in the WIAC. That will happen. We rose to the occasion. Josh Antoni made some nice catches and our quarterbacks stepped up. "This week it is David and Goliath. They have more conference championships than we have practice dummies. (Even with the coaching change) they are very similar to what we have seen in the past. They have the premier tight end (Jeff Kostrewa) and good wide receivers. They have a lot of weapons, and are well coached. "We are pretty excited to be in this situation. Last week's game will help us because it was pressure packed. We will try to take this game into the fourth quarter and see what we can do. We both virtually have the same schedule left, so the winner of this game will be provided a mulligan. The loser will have a rougher time." RADIO: WMEQ 880 AM, Jake Bostrom, Dan Stevens, Dick Lowery October 7, 2000BLUE DEVILS KEEP THAT WINNING FEELING, DOWN EAU CLAIREMENOMONIE - For the second year in a row, a Kevin McCulley (Sr, Fond du Lac) field goal lifted UW-Stout to a win over arch-rival UW-Eau Claire. But this time around, after missing three field goals - including an 18-yarder - earlier in the game, McCulley threw the goat he had been wearing off his back and lofted a 41-yard shot to lift the Blue Devils (5-0, 3-0) to a 17-14 homecoming win at Nelson Field. Stout currently ranks 12th in the latest American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and it's 5-0 start is the best since 1982 when the Blue Devils opened up at 6-0. After the two teams traded possessions, the Blue Devils got things going late in the first quarter, driving 36 yards on seven plays. Eric Lund (Sr, Ashland), who normally plays linebacker, came into the offensive backfield to carry the ball to paydirt from five yards out, scoring his third touchdown in the last two games. But it was the Blugolds (3-2, 2-1) who made it exciting in the second quarter, when they drove 99 yards to tie the game up. The Blugolds' premier back, Darrell Souhrada, picked up 94 yards on first down, and was prevented from scoring when Tony Beckham (Jr, Ocala, Fla) caught him from behind at the 5-yard line. Three plays later, Souhrada scored from two yards out. Eau Claire took their only lead of the game with four minutes remaining in the half, going 74 yards on 11 plays, capped off by a Tony Roller 15-yard pass to Jason Foemmel, making it 14-7. Stout answered back immediately on their next drive. After Luke Bundgaard (Fr, Weyerhauser) returned the kickoff 12 yards, Bundgaard opened the drive with a six yard run. Eric McCorkle (Fr, Oakdale, Minn) picked up 13 yards and Bundgaard carried 30 yards to knot the score. Stout opened the third quarter with a seven-minute, 89-yard drive, but came up short when the short field goal went wide. McCulley's game winner came when Stout drove 41 yards with 3-minutes, 21-seconds left. Last year, McCulley kicked the game winner with 15 seconds remaining at Eau Claire. Souhrada led all rushers with 190 yards on 35 carries as Eau Claire put up 155 net rushing yards. Roller was sacked four times and finished with minus-36 yards rushing. Eau Claire tallied 345 total yards, while the Blue Devils finished with 393 yards, 206 on the ground, 187 through the air. Josh Antoni (So, Holmen) had seven receptions for Stout, good for 92 yards. Stout will host UW-La Crosse, Saturday, Oct. 14 at 1 p.m. October 3, 2000ERIC LUND, KEVIN McCULLEY NAMED WIAC PLAYERS OF THE WEEKMENOMONIE - UW-Stout football players Eric Lund (Sr, Ashland) and Kevin McCulley (Sr, Fond du Lac) were named Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) players of the week and the team moved up one notch to No. 12 in the American Football Coaches' Association (AFCA) Division III poll. Lund gave Stout a boost in the first half when he returned a fumble 18 yards for a touchdown to put Stout to within 10-7 of UW-River Falls. In the second half, Lund put Stout out of range as he returned his second fumble of the day for a TD, going 10 yards to give Stout a 27-13 lead. Stout (4-0, 2-0) went on to down River Falls, 34-13, to remain undefeated in the WIAC. Lund finished with eight tackles, four solo, two tackles for losses of nine yards and one sack for eight yards. On the season, Lund has 17 tackles, nine solo, with one sack for eight yards, five tackles for losses of 22 yards, two pass break-ups and three fumble recoveries. McCulley made 2-of-3 field goals, converted on 4-of-4 PATs, and punted for an average of 47 yards, including a school record 82 yard punt and another punt that went 79 yards, in the Blue Devils' win over the Falcons. On the season, McCulley leads the team in scoring with 29 points, kicking 5-of-8 field goals and hitting 14-of-16 PATs. McCulley upped his punting average to 39.9 yards per game.
October 7, 2000OSHKOSH NETS 4-0 WIN OVER BLUE DEVILSMENOMONIE - Jolanda Aalbers scored three goals to lead UW-Oshkosh over UW-Stout, 4-0, in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) soccer action, Saturday, Oct. 7 at the River Heights Field. The Blue Devil (5-7, 3-3) kept Oshkosh (7-2, 3-2) and Aalbers, out of the net for the most of the first half, but she found the net with less than two minutes left in the half. She also opened the second half with a goal at the 50 minute mark, then finished her scoring day in the 63rd minute. Lindsay Rau added a goal just before the end of the game. Stout's Jessie Sutherland (Jr, Duluth, Minn) made 13 saves and the Stout offense got off 11 shots on goal. October 4, 2000BLUGOLDS BLANK BLUE DEVILS, 4-0, ON THE SOCCER PITCHEAU CLAIRE - The UW-Stout soccer team may have played their best game of the season Wednesday, Oct. 4, at Eau Claire. The Blue Devils forced a strong UW-Eau Claire team to scramble in midfield and limited the Blugolds to five shots on goal. Unfortunately for Stout's young team, four of the five shots converted as the Blue Devils suffered a 4-0 loss that dropped to 3-2 in the WIAC (5-6 overall). In the early going, Stout was able to trap Eau Claire in their own end, with Becca Carlson (Sr, Rosemount, Minn) attempting the first shot of the afternoon after jumping on a half clearance 20 yards from goal and hooking a booming shot wide of the net. The Blugolds looked to counterattack but the right side of Stout's defense, Carrie Kennedy (Sr, Watertown) and Diane Ehlen (Fr, Bloomington, Minn), cut out several hopeful serves to keep Eau Claire on the back foot early. When the Blugolds finally broke through on a counter attack, it seemed that Kennedy and Desiree Nardini (Fr, White Bear Lake, Minn) had successfully double-teamed Thompson just inside the penalty area. Thompson, however, was able to split the defenders only to have Stout keeper Jessie Sutherland (Jr, Duluth, Minn) jump on the ball before she could recover. Sutherland was unable to corral the ball - deflecting it to defender Raina Schneider (So, Sheboygan). Her clearance got only as far as Tina Welle, about 22 yards from goal - and Welle's shot trickled through the off balance Sutherland to put the Blugold's ahead in the 10th minute. With the young Stout defense temporarily disorganized after the first goal, Eau Claire's Kari Blasczyk added a pair of goals before the quarter hour mark. However, with the substitution of freshman Andi Moore (Fr, Woodbury, Minn), the Blue Devils defense rallied and Stout was unlucky not to have pulled a goal back when Nellie Sivertsen (So, River Falls) got in behind the Eau Claire defense only to have her shot saved by a diving Chandra Butterfield in the 24th minute. Butterfield also came up big on Lisa Kardell (Jr, Ocean City, NJ), who jumped on a Stout corner but could not beat Butterfield to the far post with her shot. As Eau Claire countered, Thompson played a ball behind the Stout defense. Sutherland misplayed the cross leaving the net open, but Stout's Moore beat Blasczyk to the ball clearing as she was fouled to snuff out the threat. The half ended with Stout pressing the attack, winning a pair of corners that produced a chance for Kristi Field (Fr, Bloomington, Minn), who shot wide from the top of the six yard box. The second half began with a good deal of play in midfield, as neither team was able to organize in the attacking area. But once again, luck smiled on the Blugolds. A blind pass at the Stout defense was cleared by Nardini, only to deflect off a Blugold attacker in behind the Stout defense. As Sutherland rushed off her line, Thompson played the ball softly into the empty net for a four goal Eau Claire advantage in the 55th minute. The Blue Devils were not through even at this juncture. Almost immediately, Stout was able to establish possession deep in the attacking area, and when Stacy Normington (So, Delavan) threatened to get behind Eau Claire's defense, she was taken down. On the ensuing free kick, Becky Howard (Sr, Wauwatosa) found Normington at the top of the penalty area. She flicked the ball into the box where Sivertsen outhustled the Eau Claire defense and goalkeeper, playing the ball to Beth Bushman (Sr, Eagan, Minn) behind the keeper at the six yard box. Bushman's effort trickled just wide of the far post. Kardell then took a Howard pass in between Blugold defenders, rocketing a shot that was unfortunate not to break the shutout. Kardell then turned provider, playing Sivertsen in behind the Blugold defense. Sivertsen found Normington at the penalty spot as the defense recovered, only to see her taken down from behind.
October 7, 2000WEEKEND RESEMBLING LOST WEEKEND FOR STOUT VOLLEYBALL TEAMMENOMONIE - The UW-Stout volleyball team came into the weekend with high expectations, but got their balloon punctured as they dropped two conference matches, including a 3-0 loss to UW-Platteville, Saturday, Oct. 7 at Johnson Fieldhouse. Coming off the heels of a 3-1 loss to UW-La Crosse the night before, the Blue Devils (17-7, 3-2) suffered a 15-9, 15-12, 15-8, sweep at the hands of the Pioneers (16-5, 1-3). The game did not feature many big hitters, with Stout's Rachel Eidet (Jr, North Mankato, Minn) and Platteville's Kristen Shields leading the way with 14 kills. Platteville's Brooke Kaiser was the only other player in double figures with 12 kills. Stout will host UW-River Falls, Wednesday, Oct. 11 at 7 p.m. October 6, 2000BLUE DEVILS DROP FIRST CONFERENCE MATCH OF THE SEASONMENOMONIE - Even Brooke Palmer's (Jr, Mantorville, Minn) 19 kills couldn't save the UW-Stout volleyball team from losing their first conference match of the season as the Blue Devils were downed, 3-1, by UW-La Crosse, Friday, Oct. 6 at Johnson Fieldhouse. The Eagles won the meet, 15-6, 15-13, 3-15, 15-5. Palmer led all scorers with 19 kills. She added a school record nine block assists and a solo block, to go along with 12 digs. Kandice O'Brien (So, Kasson, Minn) added 10 kills and was the only other Stout (17-6, 3-1) perfomer in double figures. The Eagles (11-8, 2-2) got 12 kills from Julie Hunter and Megan Eklund served up four aces. October 4, 2000BLUE DEVILS OVERCOME BLUGOLDS IN FIVE GAMESEAU CLAIRE - In a marathon contest, the UW-Stout volleyball team used some outstanding individual efforts to post up a five game, 3-2 conference win over UW-Eau Claire, Wednesday, Oct. 4 at Eau Claire. The win kept Stout undefeated in league play at 3-0 and advanced their overall record to 17-5. Laura Bogenschutz (Fr, Baxter, Minn) set a school record by providing 73 assists, many of them to Kim Roshell (Jr, Cadott) and Brooke Palmer (Jr, Mantorville, Minn). Roshell finished the night with 26 kills, while Palmer had 25. Kandice O'Brien (So, Kasson, Minn) finished with 17 kills. Rachel Eidet (Jr, North Mankato, Minn) had an outstanding defensive night, recording 34 digs. Eidet also had 11 kills. Sara Weflen (Jr, Jackson, Minn) had 20 digs and Laura Huntoon (Sr, Byron, Minn) had 18 digs. The two teams were even after four games, with Stout winning the first (16-14) and third (18-16), while Eau Claire (15-5, 1-2) took the second (15-12) and fourth (15-5). Stout overcame a 7-3 deficit in the fifth game to win 15-12. As a team, the Blue Devils smashed out a school record 88 kills, breaking the old school record of 82 set against Northland College in 1991. Bogenschutz broke the assists record of 68 set by Jenny Kraczek against Northland in 1997. Stout also broke their team record in assists, setting up 80, breaking the record of 75 set in 1991 against Northland. The Blue Devils will host UW-LaCrosse, Friday, Oct. 6 at 7 p.m. and UW-Platteville, Saturday, Oct. 7 at 1:30 p.m.
