DEFENSIVE LOOK: Stevens Point: 4-3 variation; Stout: 3-4 COACHES: Stout coach Ed Meierkort (28-44 career) is in his eighth year. Meierkort needs one more win to notch the most wins by a Stout coach. Stevens Point coach John Miech (83-37-2) is in his 13th season. STOUT COACH ED MEIERKORT SAYS: "Stevens Point will be the best team we have played up to this point. We know we are the underdogs going into this game because they are the two-time defending WIAC champions. We expect to see both of their quarterbacks (Dave Berguis, Scott Krause) and Chad Valentyne is one of the best receivers in the league. We know we will see a steady diet of Wally Schmitt running the ball. If you don't stop what they have going, you will continue to face it all night. "We have used the two weeks off to make us a better football team. We have worked on our passing game, tried to get back to defending the run and added multiple formations. We have always matched up well with what Stevens Point does. Last year, we basically botched the game in the final four minutes. But that was last year's team This team has a completely different mind set. "We had some good news this week about Aaron Johnson. I had a conversation with him and he has called some people. Our spirits are lifted for him. He's is not in our huddle, but he is in our hearts."
RADIO: WMEQ 880 AM, Jake Bostrom, Dan Stevens, Dick Lowery September 12, 2000STOUT FOOTBALL MAKES APPEARANCE IN AFCA FIRST POLLMENOMONIE - After holding their first two opponents to an average of 94.5 total yards and racking up an average of 375 yards themselves, UW-Stout debuted with a No. 17 ranking on the first American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Division III Coaches' Poll of 2000. The Blue Devils (2-0) opened the season with a 34-6 win at Lakeland College, then kept their show on the road during the second week when they thrashed Franklin College, 47-3, Sept. 9. The Blue Devils' defense is allowing a minus-six yards rushing, and 100.5 yards passing. The Blue Devil offense, which includes an almost totally revamped backfield and receiving corp, is averaging 249 yards on the ground, 126 through the air.
September 15, 2000DESPITE OUTSHOOTING ST. MARY'S, BLUE DEVILS FALL, 2-0MENOMONIE - The UW-Stout women's soccer team continued to push their brand of flowing, offensive soccer, firing 34 shots at the St. Mary's net, but Stout could never put the ball in the net, and lost to the visiting Cardinals, 2-0, Saturday, Sept. 16 at the River Heights field. From the opening kickoff, Stout was able to press the St. Mary defense inside the penalty area, but the Cardinals' goalkeeper continually beat off the charge. Stout had numerous opportunities and went on the attack almost immediately when Beth Bushman (Sr, Eagan, Minn) picked up a Nellie Sivertsen (So, River Falls) cross, but could not get enough on the deflection. Stout freshman Kristin Hoppe (Woodbury, Minn) forced a pair of saves midway through the first, but St. Mary twice cleared the ball. Stout's Becky Howard (Sr, Wauwatosa) had an opportunity on a free kick from 35 yards out with about 15 minutes remaining in the half, and Sivertsen missed a header off a corner kick. Despite the Blue Devil relentless attack, it was the Cardinals who would score to close out the half, when Katie Lentz shot from the far post to give St. Mary's a 1-0 lead. Stout attacked again to open the second, with Kate Knoespel (So, Green Bay), Bushman and Lisa Kardell (Jr, Ocean CIty, NJ) getting off legitimate shots. Again it was the Cardinals who would come up big, taking a long ball into Blue Devil territory, where the ball deflected off a Blue Devil defender to the foot of Katie Currah who put home a 25-foot shot from the right side. It would prove to not be the Blue Devils' day, as Stout redoubled its efforts in front of the St. Mary's net, but shots by Raina Schneider (So, Sheboygan) and Becca Carlson (Sr, Rosemount, Minn) were denied. Blue Devil goalkeeper Jessie Sutherland (Jr, Duluth, Minn) finished with 10 saves, but the Cardinals' Colleen O'Hearn outdid her with 17 solid saves and the shutout. "We played well, overall," Blue Devil coach Dave Morris said. "But we are young and it's still taking time to get organized on offense. We can do a better job coordinating our attackers and midfielders to give us better chances to score. "We created a lot of chances on a day where we had trouble containing the other team's midfield, The big step for us will come as we learn to believe in ourselves and our own abilities." Stout will be at home again Thursday, Sept. 21 at 4 p.m. when they take on Concordia University of Mequon, then will close out their four-game homestand with a 1 p.m. contest against St. Scholastica, Sunday, Sept. 24. September 13, 2000UW-STOUT DOWNS FALCONS WITH OFFENSIVE FIREPOWERMENOMONIE - The UW-Stout Blue Devils ran their record to 3-2 (2-0 in the WIAC) by steamrollering the River Falls Falcons 3-0 Wednesday, Sept. 13 at Menomonie. Stout fired a 21 shot, 19 corner kick offensive barrage at the Falcons in ringing up their third straight victory (fifth in a row at River Heights). While the Blue Devil offense was running on all cylinders, goalkeeper Jessie Sutherland (Jr, Duluth, Minn) was leading Stout's defense to its first shutout of the year. The Blue Devils attacked from the opening, with Stacy Normington (So Delavan) forcing a save in the first minute. Falcon keeper Jenni Zumberge also denied Nellie Sivertsen (So, River Falls) and Kristin Hoppe (Fr, Coon Rapids, Minn) from close range in the early going. Several times, Beth Bushman (Sr, Eagan, Minn) and Becky Howard (Sr, Wauwatosa) played forwards into the Falcon penalty area only to have the chance snuffed out by a diving toe or a cross bar. But just when it looked like the Falcons (0-5, 0-1) might survive until halftime, Lisa Kardell (Jr, Ocean City, NJ) took a pass from Kate Knoespel (So, Green Bay) deep on the left side and bent a screaming ball into the far side netting to put Stout up a goal with five minutes remaining in the half. Halftime provided a short respite, but after the break Stout's attack was again advancing in waves. After the Falcons scrambled away a corner kick from the right side, Howard bent an inswinging ball from the left off a Falcon defender and into the Falcon net to double Stout's advantage in the 58th minute. Moments later, yet another corner resulted in a ball rolling to Raina Schneider (So, Sheboygan) just to the left of the penalty spot - her blast was only just above the cross bar. Kardell then forced a diving save from Zumberge, with Sivertsen unlucky to have a defender save her header off the ensuing corner. In the 66th minute Howard played Sivertsen in behind the River Falls defense and the River Falls defender was left with no choice but to take the Stout forward down in the penalty area. Howard buried the penalty kick into the upper right corner of the net. Stout's offense was far from finished however. Hoppe, Denise Nagel (Fr, Baraboo) and Heather Pihl (Sr, Cottage Grove, Minn) all forced quality saves in the late stages of the match. Becca Carlson (Sr, Rosemount, Minn) narrowly missed tucking Knoespel shot in at the far post, and Andie Moore (Fr, Woodbury, Minn) ghosted past two Falcon defenders, but played unselfishly to Pihl with the goal at her mercy. Meanwhile, River Falls forced only two saves as Sutherland earned her first shutout of the year without a serious threat on the goal. "We looked composed in possession," Blue Devil coach Dave Morris said, "and that takes a lot of maturity for a young team. Our defense was also as well organized as it has been all season - particularly with the defenders working to cover for each other. "We still need a lot of chances to score, but I think that's to be expected when you've played six different line-ups in six matches. It looks like we're finally getting everyone healthy, and it's fun to play the kind of flowing, offensive-minded soccer we played today." September 12, 2000STOUT'S BUSHMAN NAMED WIAC SOCCER PLAYER OF THE WEEKMENOMONIE - UW-Stout's Beth Bushman (Sr, Eagan, Minn) was named the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) offensive player of the week for her performance in the Blue Devils' wins over Wisconsin Lutheran and UW-Superior. At 4-feet, 11-inches, Bushman, a forward, scored her first collegiate goal in the Blue Devils' 7-1 win over Superior, Sept. 9 and also added two assists in the contest. In the Blue Devils' 2-1 overtime win over Wisconsin Lutheran, Bushman assisted on both the winning goal and a goal within the first two minutes of the game. On the season, Bushman has one goal and four assists for six points.

PAUL, Minn - After jumping out to a 10-1 season record, the UW-Stout volleyball team ran into a brick wall at the Bethel Tournament, winning only one match and dropping three, Sept. 15 and 16 in St. Paul, Minn. Three of the four matches went to five games and the other went to four games. The Blue Devils (11-4) won the opening match Friday afternoon, going the distance before dowing Montana-Northern, 15-11, 15-10, 13-15, 13-15, 20-18. September 11, 2000VOLLEYBALL TEAM MAKES QUICK WORK OF ST. KATE'SST. PAUL, Minn - If it weren't for the last game, the UW-Stout volleyball team would have been back on the bus well before eight o'clock as they downed St. Catherine's, 3-0, to run their overall record to 10-1, Monday, Sept. 11 in St. Paul, Minn. Kim Roshell (Jr, Cadott), Brooke Palmer (Jr, Mantorville, Minn) and Aira Ryan (So, Zumbrota, Minn) each had three kills in the first contest, as Stout won 15-4.
