BUNDGAARD RUNS WILD, DEFENSE PITCHES NEAR-SHUTOUT

FRANKLIN, Ind - Luke Bundgaard (Fr, Weyerhauser) led an offense that may have found themselves and the UW-Stout defense was in top-notch form as Blue Devils thrashed Franklin College, 47-3, Saturday, Sept. 9 in Franklin, Ind.

Bundgaard - as well as all of the Blue Devils - showed no signs of a 10-hour bus ride, carrying the ball 22 times for 155 yards and one touchdown, averaging seven yards per carry.

Bundgaard's backfield buddies were equally as effective, with Ben Tarkowski (Fr, Hartland) gaining 67 yards on 12 carries for 5.6 yards per rush and Mark Bergman (Jr, Grantsburg) running for 57 yards on 13 carries for a 4.4 yard per rush average. Bergman rushed for two TDs, and Tarkowski, one. Bergman grabbed four passes for 51 yards for a total of 108 all-purpose yards.

In the recent past, the Blue Devils (2-0) tended to throw the ball, but Stout rushed for 335 yards, carrying the ball 60 times. By contrast, Stout attempted to pass 19 times, completing 11 throws, one for a touchdown when Justin Fjelstad (Jr, Minneapolis, Minn) hit Brian Johnson (Jr, Hudson) for a six-yard score midway through the third quarter. Stout recorded 126 yards through the air for total of 461 yards.

As effective as the offense was, the defense was equally effective, holding Franklin to 88 total yards, allowing only 25 total rushing yards and 63 passing yards. While the Grizzlies threw the ball 37 times, they completed only 12 and were intercepted four times, two of which were returned for scores.

After Bergman opened the scoring on an eight-yard run five minutes into the game two minutes later, Tony Beckham (Jr, Ocala, Fla) picked off a pass and returned it 24 yards for a score. Eric Moe (So, Hixton) returned an errant pass 34-yards to paydirt with 10 seconds remaining in the third quarter to give Stout a 40-3 lead.

Rob Weinstein (Fr, Racine) notched an interception and Kevin Dewey (Fr, Burnsville, Minn) picked off his first collegiate pass. The Stout defense also recorded three quarterback sacks and held Franklin to eight first downs.

Bundgaard scored midway through the second quarter on an 18-yard run to give Stout a 19-0 lead. The Grizzlies broke into the scoring column just before halftime with a 36-yard field goal.

Bergman recorded his second score with two minutes remaining in the third quarter and Tarkowski rumbled six yards for a score midway through the fourth quarter to close out the scoring.

Kevin McCulley's (Sr, Fond du Lac) streak of consecutive points after touchdown ended at 27 when he converted on the opening touchdown, but then missed on the next. He nailed the final four chances to start another streak.

On the season, the Stout defense is allowing 94.5 yards per game, and only eight yards of rushing.

WIth the win, coach Ed Meierkort picked up his 28th win, tying him with Bob Kamish for the most wins for a Stout coach.

"The running game has been a point of emphasis by our staff," Meierkort said. "We felt running the football against these two teams (Franklin and Lakeland) gave us our best chance."

Meierkort was pleased with the play of his defensive backfield in particular.

Beckham not only had an interception for a touchdown, but his coverage on the Grizzlies' all-conference receiver, Jim Larkin, allowed Larkin to pull in only one pass for 10 yards.

"Defensively, we played with a lot of enthusiasm," Meierkort said. "Our defensive backs played very well and we harassed them up front."

Stout will be off this weekend, then will open the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) season Saturday, Sept. 23 by hosting UW-Stevens Point at 7 p.m.

BLUE DEVILS BLOW AWAY SUPERIOR IN CONFERENCE OPENER

SUPERIOR - Stacy Normington (So, Delavan) and Lisa Kardell (Ocean City, NJ) each scored two goals as UW-Stout ripped UW-Superior, 7-1, in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) opener Saturday, Sept. 9 at Superior.

Normington got what would prove to be the game-winning goal in the 10th minute of the first half, getting an assist from Kardell. She added her second goal 16 minutes into the second half. Kardell scored two goals within a minute each other, scoring at 73:43 and again at 74:13.

Beth Bushman, who assisted Kardell on both goals, closed out the scoring with her first goal of her Stout career, a 30-yard blast. Desiree Nardini (Fr, White Bear Lake, Minn) finished with three assists.

Nellie Sivertson (So, River Falls) scored the game's first goal - and her first goal of the season - only three minutes into the contest, getting an assist from Nardini. Kristin Hoppe (Fr, Coon Rapids, Minn) scored her first collegiate goal, scoring less than a minute before halftime, after a Nardini shot clanked off the goal post and Hoppe jumped on the rebound.

Stout (2-2, 1-0 WIAC) dominated the ball all day, getting off 51 shots to the Yellowjackets' (0-1, 0-1) three. With the Stout defense dominating, Jessie Sutherland (Jr, Duluth, Minn) needed to make only two saves in 60 minutes of work, ending a streak of 23 consecutive matches where she played 1,970 consecutive minutes in the goal. Rachel McCabe (Fr, Appleton) made her first collegiate appearance.

The Stout offense put 41 shots on goal, pelting the Superior goal considerably after Normington's goal, but not able to take advantage until Hoppe scored.

"We had a lot of good individual play," said Blue Devil coach Dave Morris, "but the positive we can take from this match is the way our players were able to combine and be effective together regardless of who was on the field for us."

The Blue Devils return to action Wednesday, Sept. 13 when they host UW-River Falls at 5 p.m., then stay home for three more matches. Stout will host St. Mary's Saturday, Sept. 16 at 1 p.m., followed by Concordia Thursday, Sept. 21 at 4 p.m. and St. Scholastica, Sunday, Sept. 24 at 1 p.m.

BLUE DEVIL SOCCER TEAM NEEDS OVERTIME TO POST FIRST WIN

MENOMONIE - After scoring a goal within the first three minutes of the game, it took a goal in overtime for the UW-Stout soccer team to record their first win of the season as they defeated Wisconsin Lutheran College, 2-1, Thursday, Sept. 7 at the River Heights field.

Stacy Normington (So, Delavan) opened the scoring almost before the large crowd for Red Cedar Soccer Association (RCSA) Appreciation Day got settled when she punched in a goal at the 2-minute, 24-second mark.

The Blue Devil (1-2) defense would hold up through most of the game, but 12 minutes into the second half, the Warriors' (0-4) Bekah Himm knotted the score.

Senior Becky Howard (Wauwatosa) made sure early the game wouldn't go far into overtime when she blasted in the winning shot unassisted 3:40 into overtime.

Stout goalkeeper Jessie Sutherland (Jr, Duluth, Minn) recorded nine saves on the evening, as did the Warriors' Kelly Gilbertson.

BLUE DEVILS EXTEND SEASON RECORD TO NINE WINS

ST. PAUL, Minn - One of the signs of a good team is to win when the team is not playing well. The UW-Stout volleyball team did just that during the Hamline Tournament as they posted a perfect 4-0 record at the tournament to extend their overall record to 9-1, Saturday, Sept. 9 in St. Paul, Minn.

The Blue Devils did not play well Friday as they pushed past Northwestern, 15-11, 15-12, 15-7, then had to climb the ladder all the way as they defeated Cardinal Stritch, 11-15, 12-15, 15-8, 15-1, 15-8. Stout pulled it together the second day as they downed Northland College, 15-10, 15-7, 15-6 and host Hamline, 14-16, 15-4, 15-11, 15-5.

Brooke Palmer (Jr, Mantorville, Minn) and Rachel Eidet (Jr, North Mankato, Minn) were named to the all-tournament team. Eidet knocked down 50 kills in the four matches, while Palmer recorded 48.

The 9-1 start is the best for the Blue Devils since 1994 when Stout was 8-1 at this point in the season.

Stout will be at St. Catherine's Monday, Sept. 11.

BLUE DEVILS PULL ONE OUT OVER MACALESTER

MENOMONIE - What looked like a walk in the park after the first two games turned into a run for a win after the UW-Stout volleyball team needed five games to down Macalester College, 3-2, Wednesday, Sept. 6 at Johnson Fieldhouse.

The Blue Devils (5-1) strolled to wins of 15-9 and 15-6 in the first two games, but the Scots turned the tables and started to climb the ladder back to take the third and fourth contests, 15-10, 15-3, to force a fifth and deciding game.

Stout had to shake off the struggles of the middle contests, but took a lead in the rally scoring final game that they never relinquished, to win 15-11.

Kim Roshell (Jr, Cornell) showed a powerful attack all evening, but ran into fits of wildness, still finishing with 16 kills for the Blue Devils. Her defense helped keep Stout in the match as well, recording a match high 22 digs. Roshell also had three service aces and served up the first eight points of the second game.

Brooke Palmer (Jr, Mantorville, Minn) had a match-high 17 kills, while Rachel Eidet (Jr, North Mankato, Minn) had 15 kills and 19 digs. Palmer finished with three service aces.

The Scots (1-1) were led by Carley Bomstad, who had 15 kills and hit a solid .467.
