May 21, 2001LUER, VERDEGAN QUALIFY TO NATIONAL TRACK MEETMENOMONIE - UW-Stout's Jenney Luer (Jr, Colfax) and Laura Verdegan (Fr, Tony) have advanced to the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships and Luer could advance in two events. The meet is scheduled May 24-26 at Millikin University in Decatur, Ill. Luer is currently seeded sixth in the discus with a toss of 151-feet, 11-inches, a mark that broke her own school record. Claire Dechant of Baldwin-Wallace is the top seed in the discus with a mark of 160-7. Luer has also qualified provisionally in the shot put with a mark of 43-0.25, placing her 18th. Luer will find out late Monday, May 21 if she advances in the shot put. Verdegan, the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) triple jump champion and school record holder, is the third seed in the triple jump. Twice this season, Verdegan jumped 39-5. Top triple jump distance is 41-3.25 by Darcell Edwards of McMurry, Texas, University. The discus and shot put are scheduled for Friday, May 25 and the shot put is set for Saturday, May 26. May 18, 2001JENNEY LUER BREAKS OWN SCHOOL DISCUS RECORDLA CROSSE - UW-Stout's Jenney Luer (Jr, Colfax) broke the school record and extended her NCAA Division III automatic qualifying distance as she won the discus at the UW-La Crosse Qualifier, Friday, May 18. Luer tossed the discus 151-feet, 11-inches, more than a foot over her previous best of 150-5 earlier this season. Luer placed third in the shot put with a distance of 42-6.75. Laura Verdegan (Fr, Tony) won the long jump (17-8.25) and was third in the triple jump (37-5.75). Both Verdegan and Luer will compete at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships, May 24-26, in Decatur, Ill. Verdegan will compete in the triple jump, and Luer in the discus. Luer could also advance to the national meet in the shot put. May 15, 2001JENNEY LUER HITS TWO NATIONAL STANDARDS AT LA CROSSELA CROSSE - UW-Stout's Jenney Luer (Jr, Colfax) hit two national standards in winning both the discus and shot put at the Leo Schnur Open at La Crosse, Tuesday, May 15. Luer tossed the discus 146-feet, 1-inch, an NCAA Division III automatic distance, more than four feet than the second place competitor. Luer put just less than three feet in front of the second place finisher in tossing the shot put 42-11. Laura Verdegan (Fr, Tony) took two firsts as well, winning the triple jump with a leap of 39-0.50 and the long jump with a jump of 17-11.50, missing the NCAA provisional mark by less than two inches. Ellen Everson (Jr, Blair) set a personal best when she cracked the five minute mark in the 1500-meter run with a time of 4-minutes, 58.87-seconds.
May 21, 2001BLUE DEVILS ATHLETES QUALIFY TO NATIONAL TRACK MEETMENOMONIE - Several members of the UW-Stout men's track and field team have qualified to the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships and a few are waiting to hear if they will advance. Two Blue Devils seeded in the top 10. The meet is scheduled May 24-26 at Millikin University in Decatur, Ill. Jamie Buchholtz (Sr, Bloomer) will be competing in his seventh and final national track meet and enters the 2001 meet as the No. 2 seed in the pole vault. Buchholtz enters with a mark of 17-feet, 0.75-inches, behind two-time defending champion Brad Parris of McMurry, Texas, University. Parris set a top mark of 17-2.25, but according to a press release posted on the McMurry athletic web page, Parris will not be making the trip because of an injured bicep that required surgery. Joining Buchholtz in the pole vault is Jeff Rotering (Jr, Waumandee) who automatically qualified to the meet with a jump of 16-0. Senior Bob Cahow (New Brighton, Minn) has provisionally qualified with a jump of 15-6.50, a height that should advance him. Provisional qualifiers will hear late Monday, May 21 if they have qualified. Thrower Mike Turgeon (Fr, Perham, Minn) enters the discus field as the No. 1 seed with a school record mark of 173-10. Right behind Turgeon is Josh Beaver of Nebraska Wesleyan with a mark of 173-7. Turgeon also hit the provisional qualifying mark in the hammer throw, but his toss of 171-2 is not expected to advance. Hurdler Dave Hanson (So, Sun Prairie) increased his chances of qualifying to the meet with a time of 53.05 seconds in the 400-hurdles. Hanson is currently seeded 12th, a spot that should earn him a trip to the national meet. Hanson was the lead-off runner of the 4X400-relay team that hit a provisional qualifying mark with a time of 3:16.11 last weekend. But that mark ranks well down the list, and will not advance. Joining Hanson on the team were John Hanson (Jr, Grantsburg), Jesse Hunter (Sr, LaFarge) and Kevin Riester (Fr, Red Wing, Minn). Dave Huber (So, Mendota Heights, Minn) reached a provisional qualifying time in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 31:36.81, but will not advance. The pole vault and discus are scheduled for Thursday, May 24. The 400-hurdles trials are Thursday and the finals are Saturday, May 26. May 18, 2001DAVE HANSON INCREASES CHANCES OF ADVANCING TO NATIONALSLA CROSSE - UW-Stout's Dave Hanson (So, Sun Prairie) lowered his time and increased his chances of advancing to the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships when he placed second in the 400-meter hurdles at the UW-La Crosse Qualifier, Friday, May 18. Hanson shaved a half-second off his previous best when he clocked a time of 53.06-seconds. Jesse Hunter (Sr, LaFarge) was seventh in the event (56.12). Hanson was also a member of the 4X400-relay team that placed third in a provisional qualifying time of 3-minutes, 16.11-seconds. Jamie Buchholtz (Sr, Bloomer) won the pole vault (16-feet, 7.50-inches), while Bob Cahow (Sr, New Brighton, Minn) was fifth (15-1.50) and Cory Knudsen (Sr, Elk Mound) was sixth (14-7.50). Dave Huber (So, Mendota Heights, Minn) won the 5000-meter run in a time of 15-minutes, 8.46-seconds. The national meet is May 24-26 in Decatur, Ill. May 15, 2001JEFF ROTERING MATCHES SEASON BEST IN POLE VAULTLA CROSSE - UW-Stout's Jeff Rotering (Jr, Waumandee) matched his season best in finishing second in the pole vault, Tuesday, May 15 at the Leo Schnur Open at UW-La Crosse. Rotering leapt 16-feet to place second. Jamie Buchholtz (Sr, Bloomer) was third (15-6.50) and Bob Cahow (Sr, New Brighton, Minn) was fourth (15-6.50). Mike Turgeon (Fr, Perham, Minn) returned to championship form in winning the discus with a toss of 168-8. Turgeon was fourth in the hammer throw (156-4). Jeff Miller (Jr, St. Louis Park, Minn) was seventh in the 400-hurdles (56.99). The 4X100-relay team was seventh (42.45) as was the 4X400-relay team (3:22.66).
