BASEBALL The Blue Devils (13-1-1) are scheduled to play Monday, April 2 when they host Martin Luther College at 1 p.m., weather permitting. Last week: Stout had four games at the Augustana Invitational Classic cancelled. FASTPITCH SOFTBALL The Blue Devils (3-7) will return to action March 31-April 1 at the Illinois Wesleyan Invitational in Bloomington, Ill., where they will play six games. Last week: A game scheduled for Monday, March 26 at Concordia-St. Paul, has been postponed to Monday, April 9.
March 24, 2001JONES, HANSON, PASCH EARN ALL-AMERICA HONORSMENOMONIE - The UW-Stout gymnastics team went 3-for-3 in the individual event finals of the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA) Championships, Saturday, March 24 at Johnson Fieldhouse. The Blue Devils advanced three gymnasts to the individual event finals, and all three earned All-America honors. Brenna Jones (Sr, St. Paul, Minn) was sixth on the floor exercise, Katie Hanson (So, Duluth, Minn) was fifth on the uneven bars and Tasha Pasch (So, Northfield, Minn) tied for fifth on the vault. Jones, who had qualified to the national meet as a freshman and sophomore, scored a 9.325 on the qualifying night. In her final exercise as a Blue Devil, Jones scored a 9.175 to total 18.50 to snag the All-America award that has avoided her. Jones was coming back from an ankle injury she sustained early in the 1999-2000 season. Hanson and Pasch picked up their second All-America awards of the meet. Both were named All-America in the all-around event the night before. Hanson scored a 9.075 on day one of the competition and a 9.00 on the second day to tally an 18.075 on the uneven bars. Pasch, a 2000 All-American all-arounder, added the vault all-around title to her resume, scoring a 9.275 Friday and a 9.175 Saturday to total 18.45. The top six individual event finishers earn NCGA All-America status. As a team, Stout placed seventh in their first trip to the national meet as a team since 1986. March 23, 2001HANSON, PASCH EARN ALL-AMERICA HONORS, ADVANCE WITH JONESMENOMONIE - UW-Stout's Tasha Pasch (So, Northfield, Minn) and Katie Hanson (So, Duluth, Minn) earned All-America honors on the first day of the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA) Championships at Johnson Fieldhouse in Menomonie, Friday, March 23. Pasch repeated as an All-America all-arounder when she placed eighth (35.975) and Hanson earned her first All-America award, placing 10th (35.80). The top 10 finishers are named All-America. Pasch and Hanson also advanced to the individual championships in separate events. After the first day of competition, Pasch is tied for second on the vault with a 9.275. Hanson, who owns the school record for the uneven bars, just missed the mark when she placed sixth with a score of 9.075. Blue Devil senior Brenna Jones (St. Paul, Minn) will get one last chance to compete in front of the home crowd. Jones is currently seventh in the floor exercise with a 9.325. The top six individual event finishers will be named All-America. UW-La Crosse won the meet, their sixth national gymnastics title. March 24, 2001NCGA CROWNS FOUR NEW INDIVIDUAL EVENT CHAMPIONSMENOMONIE - The National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA) crowned four new individual champions in the final day of the Championships at UW-Stout in Menomonie, Wis., Saturday, March 24. Molly Nemes of Gustavus Adolphus College overcame problems with the start of her music to win the floor exercise with a two day score of 18.875. Nemes edged out UW-La Crosse's Becky McDonnell, who was the floor champion in 1998 and 1999, and Sabrina Ashton of UW-Oshkosh, the defending floor champion. McDonnell finished with an 18.850 and Ashton an 18.650. All-around champion Melissa Stanton of Hamline University won the uneven bars in commanding fashion, scoring the highest score both days to tally a 19.025. Sonja Ellefson of the Massachussets Institute of Technology was second (18.175) - her second consecutive runner-up on the bars - and Michelle Saxton of UW-La Crosse was third (18.125). Angela Erato of UW-La Crosse won the balance beam, scoring a 19.200. SUNY-Cortland captured second and third on the beam with Kristan Turner, second (19.075) and Trisha Zappala third (19.050). Melissa Cummins of UW-Oshkosh won the vault on the strength of her first day vault. Cummins came in as the top qualifier with score of 9.325. She scored a 9.425 in the finals, and held off McDonnell, who had the highest vault score of the afternoon, a 9.475. Cummins finished with an 18.750, and McDonnell had an 18.725. Sajdah Ahmad of Rhode Island College was third (18.525). The top six individual finishers are named NCGA All-America. Sonja Ellefson of MIT was named the Senior Scholar-Athlete and Barb Gibson of team champion UW-La Crosse was named the coach of the year, the second time she was honored. She first won the award in 1989. While the Eagles captured no individual top spots, they did advance eight competitors into the individual event championship round, Saturday, March 24. The top 12 finishers from the first night advance to the championship round. Hamline University freshman Melissa Stanton captured the all-around title, scoring a 37.20 to outpace SUNY-Cortland's Kristan Turner, who scored a 36.875.
