Jenney Luer (Jr, Colfax) and Sara Pivec (Jr, Coon Rapids, Minn) are waiting to hear if their provisional qualifying distances will be enough to advance. Last week: The Blue Devils finished eighth at the WIAC Championships, March 3. MEN'S TRACK & FIELD The Blue Devils will compete at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships, March 9-10 at UW-Oshkosh. Jamie Buchholtz (Sr, Bloomer) and Bob Cahow (Sr, New Brighton, Minn) will compete in the pole vault and Jeff Rotering (Jr, Waumandee) and Mike Turgeon (Fr, Perham, Minn) are waiting to hear if their provisional qualifying distances will be enough to advance. Last week: The Blue Devils placed fifth at the WIAC Championships, March 3. BASEBALL The Blue Devils are scheduled to play 12 games for their annual spring break trip to Ft. Myers, Fla., March 11-17. Last year, Stout went 6-6 in Florida. Last week: Stout swept Dubuque, 2-0, 8-5, March 5 and Bethel College, 17-1, 7-6, Feb. 27, although the 7-6 game is in dispute. FASTPITCH SOFTBALL The Blue Devils will open their schedule when they make their annual trip to Florida to play 10 games, March 11-17. The Blue Devils went 4-6 last year in Florida.
March 4, 2001AMY ZELINGER NAMED WOMEN'S BASKETBALL MVPMENOMONIE - Amy Zelinger (Jr, Racine) did a little bit of everything for the UW-Stout women's basketball team and was named the team's most valuable player, head coach Mark Thomas announced Sunday, March 4 at the team's annual awards banquet. Zelinger was the team's leading scorer, averaging 13 points. She led the conference in steals with 3.24 nabs per game. Zelinger moved over to the point guard position after two of the Blue Devils' point guards went down early in the season and responded with a team high 79 assists (3.2 a/g). Zelinger finished second on the team in blocked shots (19) and was third in rebounding, averaging 4.4 caroms per game. She shot 41 percent from the floor, and 65 percent from the free throw line. Zelinger, a first team all-WIAC pick, was also named the team's offensive MVP. Bethany Halvorson (Jr, Independence) garnered the team's most valuable defensive award, shared the most improved award and was the team's free throw champion. Halvorson broke into the starting lineup the final eight games of the season, averaging nearly 10 points in those game. On the season, Halvorson averaged 3.2 points, 1.2 rebounds and nearly one steal per game. From the free throw line, she shot 78 percent. Jackie Ellsworth (Fr, Hayward) shared the most improved award with Halvorson. Splitting time at the point guard spot througout the season, Ellsworth averaged 2.25 assists per game and 4.8 points. Sara Kahl (Fr, Menomonie) earned rookie of the year awards, averaging 10.6 points per game and 3.8 rebounds. Kahl showed she would be a force to be reckoned with early in the season when she scored 22 and 23 points in back-to-back games. Laura Verdegan (Fr, Tony) earned the Hustle Award, Tanya Halbach (So, Janesville) the Sixth Player Award and Jill Dummer (Fr, Holmen) the Spirit Award. Coaches Awards went to Tiffani Calmes (So, Colby), Morgan Mitchell (Fr, Owen), Jamie Retzloff (Jr, Strum) and Bonnie Thoe (Fr, Hayfield, Minn). March 4, 2001JUSTIN WISKIE, CULLEN FLAHERTY NAMED TO NCHA HONOR TEAMMENOMONIE - UW-Stout goalie Justin Wiskie (So, Janesville) and defenseman Cullen Flaherty (So, Duluth, Minn) were named to the 2000-01 All-Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) team. Wiskie posted a 4-2 NCHA win-loss record as the Blue Devils went 9-5 in the NCHA. Wiskie posted a goals against average of 3.71 and made 191 saves with a save percentage of .910. In all games, Wiskie was 5-5 overall with a school record GAA of 3.65. He had 320 saves and had a save percentage of .904. Flaherty scored 11 NCHA points, getting three goals and eight assists playing in all 14 games. On the season, Flaherty was the Blue Devils' third leading scorer with 21 points on five goals and 16 assists. His assists total was second on the team. The Blue Devils finished fourth in the NCHA and hosted their first ever NCHA playoff series. Stout posted a school record 15-11-1 overall record. The Blue Devils also play in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) and placed second.
March 1, 2001BLUE DEVILS FINISH 1-2-3 ON FLOOR EXERCISEMENOMONIE - UW-Stout took the top three spots in the floor exercise, but the Blue Devils fell to Winona State, 176.50-172.90, Thursday, March 1 at Johnson Fieldhouse. Brenna Jones (Sr, St. Paul, Minn) captured the event with a 9.30. Tasha Pasch (So, Northfield, Minn) was second (9.125) and Katie Hanson (So, Duluth, Minn) was third (9.00). That would be about it for the Blue Devils, as the NCAA Division II Warriors swept both the uneven bars and the balance beam. Hanson did crack the top three on the bars, tying for third (8.75) and was fourth on the beam (8.80). Pasch finished second on the vault (9.05) and Hanson was fourth (8.95). Hanson finished second in the all-around (35.50). Freshman Jennie Rosinsky (Green Bay) picked up a pair of sixth place finishes, on the vault (8.875) and the beam (8.65). Stout will be at the NCGA Regionals, Friday, March 9 and will conclude their season when they host the NCGA national championships March 23-24. March 3, 2001POLE VAULTING CREW LEADS BLUE DEVILS AT WIAC MEETSTEVENS POINT - The UW-Stout pole vaulting team placed four individuals in the top eight spots as the Blue Devils finished fifth at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Indoor Track and Field Championships, Saturday, March 3 at Stevens Point. Jamie Buchholtz (Sr, Bloomer), the defending pole vault champion, finished second with an NCAA Division III automatic qualifying height of 16-feet, 0.75-inches. Hans Schmidt of UW-La Crosse went 17 feet to dethrone Buchholtz. Jeff Rotering (Jr, Waumandee) placed third (15-0.25), while Corey Knudson (Jr, Elk Mound) and Bob Cahow (Sr, New Brighton, Minn) were in a three-way tie for eighth (14-6.25). Knudson was third in the heptathlon with 4283 points, with Cahow fourth (4163). Lewis Cassillius (Fr, Glenwood City) was seventh (4015). Dave Hanson (So, Sun Prairie) picked up a pair of fifth place finishes, in the 400-meter run (50.03) and 55-meter hurdles (7.95). Mike Turgeon (Fr, Perham, Minn) placed fifth in the weight throw (55-2.75). Dustin Kohnert (Fr, Independence) was sixth in the triple jump (45-0.25) and Chad Sosalla (Fr, Whitehall) was eighth (42-5.50). March 3, 2001LUER FINISHES SECOND IN SHOT PUT AT CONFERENCE MEETSTEVENS POINT - Jenney Luer (Jr, Colfax) placed second in the shot put to pace UW-Stout in the first day of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Indoor Track & Field Championships, Friday, March 2 at Stevens Point. Luer, who competed in high school in Palmer, Alaska, reached the NCAA Division III provisional qualifying distance when she threw the shot 42-feet, 2.75-inches. Teammate Sara Pivec (Jr, Coon Rapids, Minn) placed fifth in the shot put with a distance of 40-7.50. Andi Schwabenlender (Jr, Bristol) was the only Stout individual to place Saturday, March 3. Schwabenlender finished in a fourth place tie in the high jump (4-11.75). Friday, Schwabenlender was sixth in the pole vault (8-10.75) Stout's 4X200-relay team was seventh (1:55.66) and the 4x400-team was eighth (4:14.93). March 5, 2001UW-STOUT SWEEPS PAST DUBUQUE AT METRODOMEMINNEAPOLIS, Minn - Matt Lunde (Jr, Eau Claire) pitched a three hitter in the opener and Eric Lund (Sr, Ashland) hit a bases loaded triple in the second game to lift UW-Stout to a 2-0, 8-5, sweep over the University of Dubuque, Monday, March 5 at the Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn. Lunde scattered three hits over six innings while striking out four to get his second win of the season. Stout allowed only one runner as far as second base, and Lunde allowed runners only to first. Eddie Young (Jr, La Crosse) was 2-for-2 with a walk and scored the Blue Devils' two runs. Young was driven in by Brad Barneson (Jr, Strum) in the second and by Matt Hoeft (So, Elk Mound) in the fourth. Zak Arneson (Sr, Barneveld) came on in the seventh to pick up his first career save. After Dubuque loaded the bases with two walks and an error in the top of the first of the second game, Lund drove everybody home to give Stout a 3-0 lead with no outs. Barneson got his second RBI of the day when he singled to center to bring in Lund. Barneson picked up another RBI in the second inning when his sacrifice fly drove in Dave Rueber (Sr, Afton, Minn). Starter Brian Bee (Jr, Bloomer) allowed a run in the bottom of the third, but Stout gave Bee all the cushion he would need with a three-run outburst.Bee gave way to relief pitching in the fourth inning after striking out two and allowing one walk while facing 13 batters and scattering five hits. Dubuque scored three runs in the fourth and another in the fifth to make the game interesting, but Blue Devil relievers Ryan Wolf (So, Adrian, Minn) and Ryan Jensen (Jr, Cylinder, Iowa) allowed only one hit the rest of the way and struck out three. Jensen pitched the final inning to get the save. Stout notched only five hits in the game, but Dubuque committed five errors. Stout will head south to compete in their annual spring break trip in Ft. Myers, Fla., where they are scheduled to play 12 games, March 11-17. February 27, 2001BLUE DEVILS MAKE VAVRA'S DEBUT SUCCESSFULMINNEAPOLIS, Minn - The UW-Stout baseball team welcomed first year coach Joe Vavra back to the collegiate ranks with a thunderous 17-1 win over Bethel College in the Blue Devils' 2001 opener, Tuesday, Feb. 27 at the Metrodome. After allowing a run in the top of the first, the Blue Devils exploded for 12 runs in the third inning as Stout sent 17 batters to the plate in the stanza. Eric Lund (Sr, Ashland) had five runs-batted-in in the inning, hitting a bases loaded single and a bases loaded double. Josh Johnson (Sr, Oregon) drove in two runs with a double in his second at-bat of the inning. Matt Lunde (Jr, Eau Claire) picked up the win, pitching four innings and allowing one run. Eddie Young (Jr, La Crosse) went 2-for-4 in the game, while Johnson was 3-for-4 with three RBI. In the second game, Bethel scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to force a 7-7 tie. Extra innings were not permitted because of the time limit at the Metrodome. Stout scored four runs in the top of the first, but Bethel took the lead with five unearned runs in their half of the inning. Stout settled down and tied the game when JW Dachel (Jr, Bloomer) doubled to score Brad O'Connell (Sr, Elk Mound) in the fourth inning. Stout took a 7-5 lead when Brad Barneson (Jr, Strum) tripled in Matt Hoeft (So, Elk Mound) and Steve Leach (Jr, Coon Rapids, Minn) drove in Barneson. Bethel tightened the score with a single run in the fifth. Both teams squandered opportunities in the sixth inning, stranding two runners apiece. O'Connell was 2-for-3 and Dachel was 2-for-2 with two RBI and two stolen bases. Nick Kalina (Jr, Potosi) had two RBI as he drove in two runs and Justin Biever (So, South Milwaukee) was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Updated: March 5, 2001 |
