January 27, 2001BLUE DEVILS WRAP A STRONG PERFORMANCE AROUND HALFTIMEPLATTEVILLE - UW-Stout did not play well the first 14 minutes of the game, but they took a lead early in the second half and never looked back as they defeated UW-Platteville, 74-64, Saturday, Jan. 27 at Platteville. Stout (14-5, 7-4) scored the final seven points of the first half, then came out of the locker room blazing in the second half to score the first nine points of the period. Platteville led 30-27 at halftime. The Pioneers (9-10, 5-6) proved to be a pesky lot, pulling to within one point several times before Stout pulled away in the final four minutes. Four of the Stout starters scored in double figures with Amy Zelinger (Jr, Racine) leading the way with 15 points and getting the double-double with 10 rebounds. Laura Verdegan (Fr, Tony) tossed in 11 points and Sara Kahl (Fr, Menomonie) and Bonnie Thoe (Fr, Hayfield, Minn) each had 10 points. Verdegan had nine rebounds. The Pioneers' Laurie Buechel led all scorers with 20 points, while Angie Sisson and Allison Rotramel each scored 11 points. Stout will host UW-Eau Claire, Wednesday, Jan. 31 at 7 p.m., then will be at UW-Oshkosh, Saturday, Feb. 3. January 24, 2001BLUE DEVILS BLOW APART LA CROSSE'S EARLY LEADMENOMONIE - UW-La Crosse shot out to an early 9-1 lead, but UW-Stout came roaring back, taking the lead for good at the 11:52 mark of the first half as the Blue Devils ran off to a 98-71 win over the Eagles, Wednesday, Jan. 24 at Johnson Fieldhouse. Tanya Halbach (So, Janesville) led Stout's (13-5, 6-4) early first half charge, getting scoring five points over five minutes as six players scored in the 11-4 run that put Stout in the drivers seat for the rest of the game. Stout jumped out to a 17 point lead in the first half, saw that dwindle to a 12 points margin, but full court pressure forced numerous turnovers to allow Stout to take total control. Halbach led all scorers with 16 points, while Amy Zelinger (Jr, Racine) and Jackie Ellsworth (Fr, Hayward) each scored 14 points, with Ellsworth hitting a career high. Sarah Knutson (Fr, Hayward) came off the bench to grab eight rebounds in 10 minutes of work. As a team, Stout recorded eight blocked shots. The Eagles (8-9, 3-6) got 15 points from Jill Murray.
January 27, 2001BLUE DEVILS START STRONG, GO ON TO DOWN PLATTEVILLEMENOMONIE - UW-Stout went on a 12-2 lead and never trailed UW-Platteville as the Blue Devils took a 79-64 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) win over the Pioneers, Saturday, Jan. 27 at Johnson Fieldhouse. Although there was one early tied score, the Blue Devils (10-8, 4-7) never trailed in the contest that saw them take a 45-24 halftime lead, then balloon that up to as much as a 29 point lead before the Pioneers chipped away to make the game look somewhat respectable. Platteville (10-9, 3-8) needed to hang onto their wallets in the first half, because Stout stole just about everything else, making eight picks in the first half alone and finishing with 10 for the game. Stout forced 15 Platteville turnovers, 10 in the first half. Stout's Pat Von Feldt (Sr, Stevens Point) led all scorers with 22 points. Steve Krueger (Jr, Three Lakes) pitched in 12 points and six rebounds, to go along with three assists, one blocked shot and two steals. The Pioneers were led by Tyler Selk with 14 points, who scored 30 points against Stout earlier in the season, and Brad Stangel with 10 points. The win was Stout's second win over Platteville in the last four games, but only their fourth win over the Pioneers in the last 25 games. The loss was Platteville's seventh straight loss and the Pioneers are yet to win in the calendar year of 2001. The Blue Devils will be at UW-Eau Claire, Wednesday, Jan. 31 and will return to Johnson Fieldhouse, Saturday, Feb. 3 to host UW-Oshkosh at 7 p.m. The annual alumni game will preceed the varsity game at 5 p.m. January 24, 2001BLUE DEVILS COME UP SHORT AT LA CROSSELA CROSSE - UW-La Crosse used a seven point flurry in the final two minutes of the first to break a tied game apart slightly and went on to hand UW-Stout a 76-70 defeat, Wednesday, Jan. 24 in La Crosse. With the score tied at 27-27 with three minutes left in the first stanza, the Eagles' (9-8, 3-6) Brian Czarniak hit back-to-back jumpers and Tom Westhoff nailed a 3-pointer to give the Eagles a 34-39 halftime lead. The Eagles built the lead to as much as 13 points in the second half, but Stout (9-8, 3-7) chipped away at the lead, pulling to with three points, 67-64, on a jumper by Pat Von Feldt (Sr, Stevens Point) with 1-minute, 3-seconds remaining in the game. The Eagles went to the line to 7-of-8 free throws and made one field goal to hold off Stout's last ditch effort that saw the Blue Devils score six points in the final 30 seconds. Von Feldt led all scorers with 22 points and Aaron Vachowiak (Sr, Wausau) added 16 points and pulled down eight rebounds. Tom Westhoff scored 21 points for La Crosse, and Eddie Hebert added 17, Casey Taggatz 15 and Ben Bemis 10. January 23, 2001STOUT'S AARON VACHOWIAK NAMED PLAYER OF THE WEEKMENOMONIE - Aaron Vachowiak (Sr, Wausau) scored a team-high 16 points to lead UW-Stout to a 95-89 overtime win over nationally-ranked UW-Stevens Point Saturday, Jan. 20 and was named the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) player of the week for his efforts. Vachowiak was five-of-seven from the floor, three-for-three from three-point range, three-for-four from the line, had three rebounds and four assists in 35 minutes of play. Vachowiak also became the 21st Blue Devil to reach the 1,000 point list, hitting the mark on a three-pointer with six minutes remaining that pulled the Blue Devils to within one point.
January 27, 2001GREEN KNIGHTS POUND AWAY AT STOUTDE PERE - St. Norbert's Adam Sedgwick scored a hat trick in the first period, then added another goal midway through the second. That did not bode well for UW-Stout and the Green Knights went on to hand the Blue Devils an 8-2 Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) loss, Saturday, Jan. 27, at the DePere Ice Center. The Knights (14-5-2, 8-2) added another goal in the second period to take a 5-0 lead into the locker room. Stout's Pete Eloranta (Fr, River Falls), in only his second game as a Blue Devil, scored two goals for the second time. Brad Weappa (Sr, Brooklyn Center, Minn) had two assists and backup goalie Jeff Dotson (Fr, Chanhassen, Minn) added another for Stout (12-8-1, 6-4) The Green Knights added three more goals in the final period and outshot Stout for the game, 63-21. Stout returns home this weekend for their final regular season homestand by hosting UW-Stevens Point Friday, Feb. 2 and UW-Eau Claire, Saturday, Feb. 3. Both games are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. January 26, 2001NEWCOMER SCORES TWO GOALS, STOUT DOWNS FORESTERSLAKE FOREST, Ill - Pete Eloranta (Fr, River Falls) wasted no time establishing himself as he scored the first two goals of the game and UW-Stout went on to a 5-2 Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) win at Lake Forest College, Friday, Jan. 26. Making his first appearance as a Blue Devil, Eloranta, a 5-foot, 6-inch forward, put Stout (12-7-1, 6-3) on the board six minutes into the game, then doubled his fun with a goal 11 minutes later. Drew Nichols (Jr, Victoria, Minn) assisted on both goals and finished with three assists on the night. Brad Weappa (Sr, Brooklyn Center, Minn), who assisted on Eloranta's second goal, gave Stout a 3-0 lead with a power play goal midway through the second period, getting an assist from Andy Anderson (Sr, Burnsville, Minn). The Foresters (9-6-2, 3-5) got a goal a minute later to close the scoring in the second period. The game finished rough in the third period, with three power play goals scored, two by Stout and one by Lake Forest. Cale Finseth (Fr, Austin, Minn) scored five minutes into the period, with assists by Nichols and Cullen Flaherty (So, Duluth, Minn). The Foresters scored two minutes later and Stout's Nate Legler (Fr, Lakeville, Minn) scored unassisted with less than a minute left to play. Ben Plester (Jr, Chemainus, BC) picked up the win, making 27 saves. For one of the few times this season, Stout outshot an opponent, putting 35 shots on goal to the Foresters 29.

Jones had held the previous record of 9.50, a mark she set at the national championships in 1998. January 22, 2001BLUE DEVIL GYMNASTS EDGE PAST OSHKOSH IN RECORD FASHIONMENOMONIE - The UW-Stout gymnastics team did something they haven't done in a long while, and that is beat UW-Oshkosh. And the Blue Devils did it in record fashion, establishing a new team mark as they edged past the Titans in a triangular meet along with defending national champion, Hamline University, Monday, Jan. 22 at Johnson Fieldhouse. While the Pipers won the meet with 177.075 points, the Blue Devils tipped past the Titans, 172.50-172.20. The Blue Devils had particularly strong meets in the balance beam exercise - an exercise that brought them near disaster the last two meets - and the floor exercise, which has been their strongest and deepest event this year. Last week, Stout racked up 12 falls on the beam, but this week that number was cut in half as the team score on beam reflected the difference, a five point gain from the previous week. Individually, the Blue Devils spread the awards around. Tasha Pasch (So, Northfield, Minn) won the vault (9.10), while Brenna Jones (Sr, St. Paul, Minn) captured the floor (9.30). January 22, 2001AARON JOHNSON NAMED BLUE DEVIL FOOTBALL MVPMENOMONIE - He didn't play a down or even strap on the shoulder pads this season, but Aaron Johnson (Jr, Clear Lake) was named the most valuable player of the 2000 UW-Stout football team. The announcement was made at the Blue Devils' annual awards banquet, Monday, Jan. 22, by head football coach Ed Meierkort. Johnson, who was slated to become the Blue Devils' workhorse in the offensive backfield, was critically injured in a hit-and-run accident, Aug. 13, one day before fall training camp was to open. Johnson made a remarkable recovery and proved to be a primary inspiration for Stout through Stout's memorable season. The Blue Devils posted a best-ever 10-1 overall record, won the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) title for the first time since 1965 with a 7-0 record and made their first-ever NCAA playoff appearance. While recovering rehabilitating, Johnson was able to attend several late season games and was the honorary captain on the field for the Oct. 28 game when Stout clinched at least a share of the conference title. Johnson has returned to school and has aspirations to return to the football team. WIAC player of the year Jeff Hazuga (Sr, Thorp), a defensive lineman, and Steve Miller (Sr, Lodi), a linebacker, were named as co-most valuable defensive player of the year, while record-setting freshman running back Luke Bundgaard (Weyerhauser) was the most valuable offensive player of the year. All-American kicker/punter Kevin McCulley (Sr, Fond du Lac) was named special teams player of the year. 2000 UW-Stout Football Awards
January 22, 2001UW-STOUT SOCCER TEAM REWARDED FOR ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTMENOMONIE - Not only did the UW-Stout women's soccer team post their best-ever conference record, more importantly they posted their best-ever overall grade point average for an academic year and were rewarded for their efforts by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) at their annual convention last week in Indianapolis, Ind. The Blue Devils received the NSCAA/Adidas 2000 Team Academic Award for having a cumulative grade point average of 3.10 from the 1999-2000 academic year, an overall jump of one-half point from the previous year. "This is a credit to the dedication of our student/athletes as well as the proactive support from Joan Thomas and her staff in the university's advisement center," coach Dave Morris said. UW-Stout was the only Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) school to receive the award this year. The Blue Devils finished the conference season with a best ever 5-3 WIAC record.
