January 20, 2001BLUE DEVILS CAN'T GET UNTRACKED, FALL TO POINTERSSTEVENS POINT - The UW-Stevens Point gym has been a curse for UW-Stout the last four years and the curse came to life again as the Blue Devils were thumped by the Pointers, 82-60, Saturday, Jan. 20 at Quandt Fieldhouse. Stout (12-5, 5-4) has not beaten the Pointers in Stevens Point since the 1996-97 season and the Pointers (13-4, 5-4) would make sure the streak would stay alive as they jumped all over Stout, 45-23, at halftime. The Blue Devils were held to their lowest offensive total of the season and shot only 29 percent on the afternoon. Amy Zelinger (Jr, Racine) scored 18 points and was the only Blue Devil in double figures. The Pointers were led by Kari Groshek with 22 points. Tara Schmitt came off the bench to score 13, Amie Schultz added 11 and Megan Hodgson, 10. Stout will host UW-La Crosse, Wednesday, Jan. 24 at 7 p.m., then hit the road to Platteville, Saturday, Jan. 27.
January 20, 2001BLUE DEVILS STEAL WIN OVER STEVENS POINT IN OVERTIME, 95-89MENOMONIE - UW-Stevens Point did have an over abundance of turnovers, but UW-Stout forced five Pointer turnovers in the overtime period as the Blue Devils went on to a 95-89 conference win, Saturday, Jan. 20 at Johnson Fieldhouse. Mike Nowak (Sr, Greenfield) had two steals and Dave Larson (Jr, La Crescent, Minn) and Nate Templer (Fr, Beaver Dam) each had one steal as Stout outscored the Pointers, 16-10, in overtime. The Blue Devils (9-7, 3-6) never trailed in the overtime period and Jeff Vandenberghe (Fr, Coon Rapids, Minn) scored four of his 11 points in the extra period. Larson was a key player for Vandenberghe's overtime efforts, with Vandenberghe benefiting from a Larson steal and rebound. As a team, Stout picked the Pointers pocket 13 times, with Nowak recording four steals. The Pointers finished with 16 turnovers. Stout shot a torrid pace in the first half, hitting 67 percent of their shots as they took a 45-41 halftime lead. But the Pointers (13-4, 5-4) led most of the second half as Stout never led after the 16 minute mark. Templer and Aaron Vachowiak (Sr, Wausau) led the Blue Devils with 16 points apiece. Vachowiak went over the 1000 career scoring mark when his 3-pointer with six minutes left pulled Stout to within one point. Pat Von Feldt (Sr, Stevens Point) chipped in 14 points and Oties Epps (Sr, Highland Park, Mich) added 13 points before fouling out. The Pointers were led by point guard Brent Larson who scored 24 points, including hitting 6-of-8 3-pointers. Joe Zuiker added 16 points and Josh Iserloth chucked in 15. The win was only the third time Stout has defeated Stevens Point since the 1985-86 season. Stout will travel to UW-La Crosse Wednesday, Jan. 24, then will host UW-Platteville, Saturday, Jan. 27 at 7 p.m.
January 20, 2001BLUE DEVIL ICEMEN END LOSING SKID, DOWN LAKE FOREST, 4-2MENOMONIE - UW-Stout put an end to their longest losing streak with a 4-2 win over Lake Forest College in an afternoon Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) matinee contest. The Blue Devils (11-7-1, 5-3) halted their skid at four games as Nathan Legler (Fr, Lakeville, Minn) scored four minutes into the game on the power play. The Foresters (9-5-2, 3-4) did knot the game up 10 minutes later when Adrian Wong scored. But Stout took control in the second period on goals by Cale Finseth (Fr, Austin, Minn) and Dan Riffe (Fr, Byron, Ill). The two teams traded goals in the third period with the Foresters scoring with seven minutes left in the game. Derek Nichols (Fr, Victoria, Minn) gave Stout a two goal cushion two minutes later.Brad Weappa (Sr, Brooklyn Center, Minn) finished with two assists, assisting on Legler's and Nichols' goals. Blue Devil goalie Justin Wiskie (So, Janesville) kicked aside 36 shots, while Lake Forest goalie Justin Howard stopped 33. Stout will travel to Lake Forest, Friday, Jan. 26, then travel to St. Norbert, Saturday, Jan. 27. January 19, 2001GREEN KNIGHTS CONTINUE MASTERY OVER BLUE DEVILSMENOMONIE - St. Norbert College continued their mastery over UW-Stout on the frozen pond as they handed the Blue Devils a 6-2 loss Friday, Jan. 19 at the Dunn County Ice Arena in a Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) contest. The Green Knights (11-5-2, 5-2-0 NCHA) have won the last 11 meetings, but it looked like the Blue Devils (10-7-1, 4-3-0) were going to do something early to end that streak. Only 12 seconds into the game, Derek Nichols (Fr, Victoria, Minn) scored unassisted. The speedy goal was only two seconds short of the school record of quickest goal to begin a gam, which was 10 seconds set by Mark Ryder in 1973. But St. Norbert rapped off six straight goals, getting one goal midway through the first period to knot the score, then four second period goals. The Knights closed their scoring four minutes into the third period. Chris Bodnar and Trent Dickson each scored two goals in the flurry. Stout scored with five minutes left in the game on a Lewie Kellin (Fr, Cohasset, Minn) goal with assists by Dan Moes (Fr, North St. Paul, Minn) and Andy Anderson (Sr, Burnsville, Minn).
January 15, 2001STOUT AGAIN POSTS STRONG FLOOR SCOREMENOMONIE - For the second consecutive meet, the UW-Stout gymnastics team bounced back from a shaky performance on the balance beam and went on to post a strong score on the floor exercise. But for the second meet in a row, it wouldn't be enough as the Blue Devils were edged by UW-Whitewater, 166.30-164.925, Monday, Jan. 15 at Johnson Fieldhouse. After falling from the beam a collective 12 times, the Blue Devils had a lot of ground to make up and got top-notch performances straight down their lineup. Brenna Jones (Sr, St. Paul, Minn) won the floor exercise with a near-school record 9.35. Jones holds the school record of 9.50. Tasha Pasch (So, Northfield, Minn) was second in the event (9.025) and Katie Hanson (So, Duluth, Minn) was third (8.975). Pasch did take top honors on the balance beam with an 8.90, but had one fall that kept her away from her own school record of 9.475. Pasch captured the vault (9.00) and was the all-around winner (35.075). Erika Opoien (So, Superior) was second on the vault (8.825) and Hanson was third (8.725). Opoien also was second on the uneven bars (8.275) with Pasch third (8.15). Stout will host UW-Oshkosh, Monday, Jan. 22 at 7 p.m. UW-Whitewater 166.30, UW-Stout 164.925Vault: 1.
