Blue Devils gives Eau Claire a handful

EAU CLAIRE (April 19, 2008) - UW-Stout gave UW-Eau Claire all they could handle, but the Blugolds took a slim 5-4 win over the Blue Devils Saturday at the Outdoor Simpson Tennis Courts.

As Eau Claire prepares for the WIAC Team Tournament next week in Whitewater, the loss ends the Blue Devils' 2007-08 season.

The two teams split the singles competition, but Eau Claire gained the advantage in the doubles matches.

Allie Hinman (Fr, Lino Lake, Minn) captured the No. 1 singles match, coming back from a 6-4 first set loss to Sarah Riordan. Hinman came back with a 6-3 second set win, then took the final match in a super tiebreaker, 10-7. It was the third time this year that Hinman defeated Riordan.

Sarah Smith (Fr, Stevens Point) defeated Kristen Marciniak in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5 singles. Lindsey Luberda (So, Champlin Park, Minn) held off Michelle Reinders at No. 6 singles, 6-1, 5-7, 10-4.

Stout's only doubles win came at No. 2, with Jodie Czech (Jr, Foley, Minn) and Danielle Farchmin (Jr, Waukesha) took an 8-5 win over Kristie Carlson and Erin Welch.

Hinman and Kiersten Johnson (Fr, Andover, Minn) lost a close match at No. 1 doubles, 9-8 (7-5).

Eau Claire defeated Stout, 7-2, last fall during the traditional season.

Bethel gives Stout first loss of spring

ARDEN HILLS, Minn (April 18, 2008) - Bethel University swept all three doubles matches and half the singles matches to give UW-Stout their first loss of the spring season, a 6-3 loss at Bethel.

Allie Hinman (Fr, Lino Lakes, Minn) and Jodie Czech (Jr, Foley, Minn) had little trouble in their singles matches, with Hinman winning 10-1 at No. 1 and Czech taking a 10-3 win at No. 2. Rachel Lee (Fr, Amery) took Stout's only other win, a 10-5 win at No. 6 singles.

Stout will close the spring season, Saturday, April 19 at UW-Eau Claire.

Blue Devils roll over River Falls, 7-2

RIVER FALLS (April 16, 2008) - Allie Hinman (Fr, Lino Lakes, Minn) and Jodie Czech (Jr, Foley, Minn) had little trouble picking up wins at the top two spots as UW-Stout went past UW-River Falls, 7-2, Wednesday.

Hinman defeated Katie Ostrowski, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1 singles and Czech defeated Cassie Wood, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 2 singles.

Czech combined with Kiersten Johhnson (So, Andover, Minn) at No. 1 doubles to defeat Katie Ostrowski and Katie Anderson, 9-8 with a 7-5 tiebreaker.

Lindsey Luberda (So, Champlin Park, Minn) also took two lengthy wins on the day, winning at No. 3 doubles with Sarah Smith (Fr, Stevens Point) for a 9-8 (7-2) win, then winning a marathon No. 6 singles match over Brit Bower 6-7 (3-7), 7-6 (7-5)  10-4.

Stout will conclude the spring season this weekend when they travel to Bethel University, Friday, April 19 and to UW-Eau Claire, Saturday, April 20.

Blue Devils open spring with a win

MENOMONIE (April 13, 2008) - UW-Stout opened the spring tennis season with an 8-1 win over UW-Stevens Point Sunday at the Sports and Fitness Center indoor courts.

Several Blue Devil players came back from early set deficits to take wins.

Jodie Czech (Jr, Foley, Minn) came back from a 3-0 first set deficit to defeated Emily Riordan, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 2 singles. At No. 6 singles, Rachel Lee (Fr, Amery) rallied to take a 1-6, 7-6(7-3), 10-4 win over Lauren Kluz.

Allie Hinman (Fr, Lino Lakes, Minn) defeated Rachel Benn, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 1 singles, but had lost to Benn in their last meeting at the WIAC Championships in the fall.

At No. 3 doubles, Lindsey Luberda (So, Champlin Park, Minn) and Kallie Anderson (Fr, Loretto, Minn) fell behind early, but came back to win, 8-5.

Stout will be at Bethel University, Friday, April 18 and at UW-Eau Claire, Saturday, April 19.

Czech finishes second at WIAC championships

MADISON (October 21, 2007) - UW-Stout's Jodie Czech (Jr, Foley, Minn) finished second at No. 2 singles at the WIAC Tennis Championships Sunday at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison.

Czech entered the tournament as the second seed at No. 2 singles, and matched the seed. She opened the tournament with a 6-1, 6-2, win over seventh seeded Emily Riordan of UW-Stevens Point. She then had to come back after dropping the first set to down third seeded Jessie Farrar of UW-Whitewater, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. She lost to fourth seeded Gina Dahl of UW-Eau Claire in the championship round, 6-4, 6-2. The runner-up finish was Czech's highest career placing in the tournament. Last season, she was fourth at No. 2 singles and was fourth as a freshman at No. 3 singles.

Czech paired with Lindsey Luberda (So, Champlin, Minn) at No. 3 doubles, finishing fifth with an 8-6 win over Brit Wagner/Kelly McDonnell of UW-La Crosse. .

Michelle Hohl (Sr, Portage) finished up her career with a fourth-place finish at No. 5 singles, matching a fourth place finish last season at No. 3 doubles. The fourth place was her best singles finish. Hohl will graduate in December.

Allie Hinman (Fr, Lino Lake, Minn) finished fourth at No. 1 singles, winning her first match in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, against Sarah Riordan of UW-Eau Claire. She fell to eventual champion Kozue Matsumoto of UW-River Falls, 6-1, 6-4, then lost the third place match, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4, against Rachel Benn of UW-Stevens Point, to finish fourth. Hinman and Natalie Hahn (Sr, Mound, Minn) finished fifth at No. 1 doubles.

As a team, Stout finished sixth in the tournament and fifth overall. The Blue Devils (8-3, 3-3) finished third in the dual meet standings.

Czech earns No. 2 seed at WIAC championships

MENOMONIE (October 16, 2007) - UW-Stout's Jodie Czech (Jr, Foley, Minn) earned a second seed at No. 2 singles in the WIAC Tennis Championships scheduled for Oct. 20-21 at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison.

Czech will play seventh seed Emily Riordan of UW-Stevens Point in the first round. Michelle Hohl (Sr, Portage) earned the third seed at No. 5 singles and will play Kaitlyn King of Stevens Point. Allie Hinman (Fr, Lino Lakes, Minn) is fourth seed at No. 1 singles and will play Sarah Riordan of UW-Eau Claire. Kiersten Johnson (So, Andover, Minn) is seeded sixth at No. 3 singles and will meet Cassie Wood of UW-River Falls. Natalie Hahn (Sr, Mound, Minn) is seeded fifth at No. 4 singles and will meet Emily Bouche of UW-Stevens Point. Lindsey Luberda (So, Champlin, Minn) is seeded sixth and will meet Liz Deprey of UW-Eau Claire.

In doubles play, Hinman and Hahn are seeded fifth in No. 1 doubles and will face Sarah Riordan/Gina Dahl of Eau Claire. The top overall four team finishers will meet in a four-team tournament in the spring to determine the automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division III Championships.

Blue Devils use doubles to take win over Winona

MENOMONIE (October 12, 2007) - UW-Stout swept doubles competition to set the stage for a 6-3 win over Winona State, Friday in Stout's final dual meet of the fall.

Jodie Czech (Jr, Foley, Minn) and Lindsey Luberda (So, Champlin, Minn) had a relatively easy time at No. 3 doubles, taking an 8-4 win. No. 1 and No. 2 doubles had a tougher time of it. Michelle Hohl (Sr, Portage) and Kiersten Johnson (So, Andover, Minn) squeezed out a 9-7 win, while the No. 1 team of Allie Hinman (Fr, Lino Lakes, Minn) and Natalie Hahn (Sr, Mound, Minn) needed nearly 90 minutes for an 8-6 win.

Czech picked up a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles. Sarah Smith (Fr, Stevens Point) took a 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 6 singles.

Hohl, playing in her final home match, scored a 6-3, 6-2, win at No. 5 singles.

Stout will be at the WIAC Championships, Oct. 20-21 in Madison. The top four teams will advance to a team tournament in the spring to determine the automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division III Championships.

Allie Hinman named WIAC player of the week

Allie HinmanMENOMONIE (October 10, 2007) - UW-Stout's Allie Hinman (Fr, Lino Lakes, Minn/Centennial) has been named the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) singles player of the week for the second time this season.

Hinman was 3-0 on the week at No. 1 singles, defeating Debbie Braun of UW-La Crosse, 6-0, 6-2, Rachel Minerath of UW-Oshkosh, 6-1, 6-2, and Katye O'Brien of St. Norbert, 7-6 (7-1), 2-6, 10-7. The freshman ran her season singles record to 10-5, all at No. 1.

Hinman was 2-1 at No. 1 doubles for the week, teaming with three different players, getting wins against La Crosse and Oshkosh. Stout was 3-0 on the week, defeating La Crosse and Oshkosh by 5-4 scores and St. Norbert, 7-2. Stout is currently 7-3 on the season, 3-3 in WIAC play.

Hinman was also named the WIAC player of the week the first week of September.

Stout will close out the fall dual season, Friday, Oct. 12 when they host Winona State at 3 p.m. The Blue Devils will compete at the WIAC Tennis Championships, Oct. 20-21 in Madison.

Blue Devils defeat Oshkosh, St. Norbert

OSHKOSH/GREEN BAY (October 6, 2007) - UW-Stout got a double dip in the heat of early October as the Blue Devils traveled to UW-Oshkosh and St. Norbert College Saturday, winning both matches.

Stout (7-3, 3-3) opened the day with a 5-4 win over WIAC opponent UW-Oshkosh. The Blue Devils defeated St. Norbert, 6-2, at the Western Racquet Club in Green Bay later in the afternoon. There was no match staged at No. 6 singles.

Jodie Czech (Jr, Foley, Minn) was perfect on the day, winning four matches, two at No. 2 singles, and one apiece at No. 1 doubles against Oshkosh and No. 3 doubles against St. Norbert.

Allie Hinman (Fr, Lino Lakes, Minn) and Michelle Hohl (Sr, Portage) each won two singles matches, Hinman at No. 1 and Hohl at No. 5.

The Blue Devils will close out the regular season, Friday, Oct. 12 when they host Winona State at 3:30 p.m.

Blue Devils hand Eagles first loss of season

MENOMONIE (October 4, 2007) - UW-Stout's match against UW-La Crosse came down to the final match of the night: the No. 6 singles match. Stout's Sarah Smith (Fr, Stevens Point) delivered the victory, giving the Blue Devils a 5-4 win over the Eagles, Thursday at the south courts.

Stout (5-3, 2-3) got off to an early lead after the doubles matches. At number one doubles, the duo of Allie Hinman (Fr, Lino Lakes, Minn) and Natalie Hahn (Sr, Mound, Minn) pounded their opposition, 8-1. In the number two spot, Kiersten Johnson (So, Andover, Minn) and Michelle Hohl (Sr, Portage) defeated their opponents, 8-4, giving Stout an early 2-0 lead. Jodie Czech (Jr, Foley, Minn) and Lindsey Luberda (So, Champlin, Minn) nearly completed the perfect 3-0 doubles for Stout, but lost in a heart-breaking tie-breaker, 9-8 (7-5).

In singles play, both Hinman and Hohl won their matches, becoming Stout's only double winners of the day. Johnson lost her singles match in two sets. Czech and Hahn each lost theirs in three.

That set the stage for the last match of the day. With the teams in a 4-4 tie, and only one match left, it meant Stout's fate lay in the hands of No. 6 singles, Sarah Smith. Smith won her first set in a 7-3 tie-breaker. She then performed well under pressure in the second set, defeating the Eagles' Kristen Holle, 6-4, giving Stout the win. La Crosse dropped to 4-1, 2-1 in the WIAC.

The Blue Devils return to action on Saturday, Oct. 6, when they travel to face UW-Oshkosh, which is winless in the WIAC.

Pointers take four singles matches for win

MENOMONIE (September 29, 2007) - UW-Stevens Point captured four singles matches, including the decisive match at No. 4 singles for a 5-4 win over UW-Stout Saturday.

The Blue Devils opened the day - which began outside, but quickly moved indoors due to inclement weather - by winning No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. Allie Hinman (Fr, Lino Lakes, Minn) and Natalie Hahn (Sr, Mound, Minn) took an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles and Jodie Czech (Jr, Foley, Minn) and Lindsey Luberda (So, Champlin, Minn) won, 8-2 at No. 3 doubles.

Czech caputed a No. 2 singles win, 6-2, 6-3, over Emily Riordan and Kiersten Johnson (So, Andover, Minn) had a 6-3, 6-4 win over Mashell VerBockel at No. 3 singles.

The match came down to Stout's Hahn and Point's (4-3, 1-3) Emily Bouche. Bouche took the first game, 6-2, but Hahn came back to knot the score with a 7-5 win. Bouche got the win with a 7-6 win, on a 7-2 tiebreaker.

Stout (4-3, 1-3) will host UW-La Crosse, Thursday, Oct. 4 at 3:30 p.m.

Hinman takes No. 1 singles win over Eau Claire

EAU CLAIRE (September 27, 2007) - UW-Stout's Allie Hinman (Fr, Lino Lake, Minn) went into overtime to take a win at No. 1 singles over UW-Eau Claire's Sarah Riordan Thursday.

Hinman came back from a 6-2 first set loss to take a 6-3 second set win. Hinman and Riordan went way past the 10 point tie breaker as Hinman won 13-11 in the third set.

Jodie Czech (Jr, Foley, Minn) and Lindsey Luberda (So, Champlin, Minn) picked up Stout's (4-2, 1-2) other win as the Blugolds (5-2, 3-0) downed Stout, 7-2. Czech and Luberda, playing at No. 3 doubles, defeated Erin Welch and Liz Deprey, 8-6.

Stout will host UW-Stevens Point, Saturday, Sept. 29 at 10 a.m.

Michelle Hohl wins Fall Invite consolation title

ST. PETER, Minn (September 22, 2007) - Michelle Hohl (Sr, Portage) came back to win the consolation title at the Fall Invitational at Gustavus Adolphus Saturday.

Hohl won five matches to take the title. After dropping her first match in the tournament draw on Friday, Hohl worked her way through the consolation tournament. She defeated Kendra Miulec of UW-Whitewater, 8-4, Nikki Peach of St. Catherine, 8-2, Devin Daughtery of Carleton, 8-0, Brittany Gerring of UW-Whitewater, 8-4, and in the finals, defeated Molly Stapleton of Lake Forest, 8-3.

Hohl also partnered with Kiersten Johnson (So, Andover, Minn) to finish runner-up in the consolation championships of double play in the tournament. The pair defeated Maggie Hendrickson/Rachel Pottenger of Concordia, 8-2, and Molly Stapleton/Iona O'Donnell of Lake Forest, 8-3, before falling in the championship match to a hybrid team of Stephanie Feld from UW-Whitewater and Kristina Kelly of Gustavus Adolphus, 8-6.

Johnson won three singles matches during the consolation championships.

Jodie Czech wins in first round at ITA regionals

ST. PETER, Minn (September 21, 2007) - Jodie Czech (Jr, Foley, Minn) was UW-Stout's lone winner at the prestigious Midwest Wilson/ITA Small College Regional Championships Friday at Gustavus Adolphus.

Czech came back from a first set loss to defeat UW-Whitewater's Kara Amundson, 1-6, 6-2, 6-4. Czech lost in the second round to Hannah Jensen from Coe College, 6-0, 7-5.

Allie Hinman (Fr, Lino Lakes, Minn) lost her first round match to ninth seeded Frances Leung of Carleton College, 6-3, 6-1.

Kiersten Johnson (So, Andover, Minn) and Michelle Hohl (Sr, Portage) participated in the Gustavus Fall Invite, held in conjunction with the ITA meet. Both dropped first round matches, Johnson to Abby Citrin of Macalester, 7-6 (7-6), 4-6, 10-6, and Hohl to Amy Christenson of Luther College, 7-5, 6-3. The duo teamed up for a double match, falling 8-3 to St. Benedict's Laura Wermager and Elissa Husby.

Blue Devils edge River Falls in marathon

MENOMONIE (September 18, 2007) - In a four hour match that saw UW-Stout come back a number of times, the Blue Devils prevailed with a 5-4 WIAC win over UW-River Falls Tuesday.

Stout (4-1, 1-1 WIAC) opened the match by dropping two of three doubles matches, then fell behind quickly after No. 1 singles concluded in a flash. Jodie Czech (Jr, Foley, Minn), playing with a back injury, won her No. 2 singles match, 6-2, 6-3, but Stout lost at No. 6 singles to trail 4-2.

The numbers 3, 4, and 5 singles matches all went to three sets and numbers 3 and 4 each had tiebreakers in them. Kiersten Johnson (So, Andover, Minn) dropped her first set at No. 3, 7-6, with a 7-6 tiebreaker, but came back to cruise with a 6-1, 6-2 ending. Michelle Hohl (Sr, Portage) at No. 5 dropped her first match, 6-2, but rebounded for a 6-3, 6-4 final set win.

That left Natalie Hahn (Sr, Mound, Minn) in a tense set with Mindy Rudiger at No. 4. Hahn won the first set, 7-6 on a 7-6 tiebreaker, but Rudiger came back for a 6-3 second set win. The third set nearly went to another tiebreaker before Hahn captured a 7-5 win to give Stout the conference win over the Falcons (5-3, 0-2).

A handful of players will take part in the ITA Regionals Sept. 21-22 at Gustavus Adolphus. As a team, Stout will return to action Thursday, Sept. 27 at UW-Eau Claire.

Stout announces tennis schedule changes

MENOMONIE (September 14, 2007) - UW-Stout head coach Bob Salt announced a few changes in the Blue Devil women's schedule.

A home match with Winona State scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 13 has been rescheduled to Friday, Oct. 12 at 3:30 p.m. at the UW-Stout courts.

On Friday, Sept. 21, four players will compete in two separate tournaments at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn. Allie Hinman (Fr, Lino Lakes, Minn) and Jodie Czech (Jr, Foley, Minn) will be competing in singles play at the Midwest Wilson/ITA Small College Regional Championships.

Kiersten Johnson (So, Andover, Minn) and Michelle Hohl (Sr, Portage) will be at the Gustavus Fall Invitational competing in both singles and doubles play.

BELOIT (September 9, 2007) - UW-Stout's Allie Hinman (Fr, Lino Lake, Minn) had her hands full for the second day in a row, but for the second concecutive day, Hinman downed the same player as the Blue Devils defeated Beloit College, 8-1, Sunday.

Hinman faced off against Beloit's Hannah Perwin, who she had defeated the day before to win the No. 1 flight at the the UW-Whitewater Invitational, and the match went to three games for the second consecutive day. Hinman defeated Perwin, 2-6, 7-5, 10-8 at No. 1 singles.

Jodie Czech (Jr, Foley, Minn) got a 7-5, 6-4 win at No. 2, Kiersten Johnson (So, Andover, Minn) won at No. 3 (6-2, 6-3), Natalie Hahn (Sr, Mound, Minn) won at No. 4 (6-1, 6-2), Michelle Hohl (Sr, Portage) won at No. 5 (6-1, 6-0) and Rachel Lee (Fr, Amery) recorded her first collegiate win, taking the cup at No. 6 (6-1, 6-4).

Hinman and Czech suffered the team's only loss, falling 8-6, at No. 1 doubles. Johnson and Hohl took an 8-0 win at No. 2 doubles and Lindsey Luberda (So, Champlin, Minn) and Danielle Farchmin (Jr, Waukesha) won 8-2 at No. 6.

Stout (3-1, 0-1) is off until Tuesday, Sept. 18 when they are at UW-River Falls.

WHITEWATER (September 8, 2007) - UW-Stout Allie Hinman (Lino Lakes, Minn) captured first place at the UW-Whitewater Invitational in the No. 1 Flight Saturday and as a team, Stout finished fourth.

Hinman defeated Jenna Richardson of Augustana, 6-1, 6-0, in the first round, then knocked off Katie McDonald of UW-La Crosse, 6-3, 7-6 (6-3). Hinman defeated Hannah Perwin of Beloit College, 6-2, 7-5, in the championship match.

Jodie Czech (Jr, Foley, Minn) finished third in second flight singles, defeating Kayla Kodet of UW-Oshkosh, 6-0, 6-2, in the opening round, then fell to UW-Eau Claire's Gina Dahl, 6-0, 7-6 (7-2). Czech defeated Erika Zevin of Beloit, 6-0, 6-1, in the third place match.

Sarah Smith (Fr, Stevens Point) and Jariann Hurlburt (Jr, Durand) placed fourth at No. 3 doubles.

Stout will complete the busy weekend Sunday, Sept. 9 at Beloit College.

WHITEWATER (September 7, 2007) - UW-Stout lost their first tennis match of the season, 8-1, a conference opening contest at UW-Whitewater Friday.

Jodie Czech (Jr, Foley, Minn) notched Stout's (2-1, 0-1 WIAC) only win of the afternoon, a 7-5, 6-2, win at No. 2 singles over Jessica Farrar.

At No. 1 singles, freshman Allie Hinman (Lino Lakes, Minn) was edged out in three games by Whitewater's (3-1, 1-0) Ingrid Stensvaag, 2-6, 6-2, 10-8.

Stout will participate in the UW-Whitewater Tournament, Saturday, Sept. 8, then will be at Beloit College, Sunday, Sept. 9

Allie Hinman is WIAC singles player of the week

MADISON (September 4, 2007) - It didn't take long for UW-Stout freshman Allie Hinman (Lino Lakes, Minn/Centennial) to make an impression. After handily winning her first two career matches at No. 1 singles, Hinman was named the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) singles player of the week.

Hinman lost only one game in four sets of No. 1 singles play last weekend in UW-Stout's opener, defeating Hannah Pincsak of Edgewood College, 6-1, 6-0, then shut out Lisa Ritland of Lawrence University, 6-0, 6-0. Hinman teamed with Jodie Czech (Jr, Foley, Minn) to breeze through No. 1 doubles, with wins of 8-2, 8-0.

MADISON (September 2, 2007) - The UW-Stout women's tennis team made Bob Salt a double winner in his first collegiate matches as the Blue Devils romped over host Edgewood College, 8-1, in the opener Sunday and repeated the score with an 8-1 win Lawrence University later in the day.

Allie Hinman (Fr, Lino Lakes, Minn) and Jodie Czech (Jr, Foley, Minn), each picked up four wins on the day, two at singles and two at doubles. Hinman lost only one game at singles and, together with her doubles matches with Czech, was 40-3 on the day.

Michelle Hohl (Sr, Portage) teamed with Kiersten Johnson (So, Andover, Minn) for two doubles wins at No. 2. Natalie Hahn (Sr, Mound, Minn) had two singles wins at No. 4 and Sarah Smith (Fr, Stevens Point) had two wins at No. 6. The Blue Devils played 11 players and all 11 secured at least one win on the day.

Stout kicks off conference action Friday, Sept. 7 when they travel to UW-Whitewater for a dual match, then will compete in the UW-Whitewater Invitational, Saturday, Sept. 8. Stout will be at Beloit College, Sunday, Sept. 9.

Bob Salt to take over as women's tennis coach

Joe HofferMENOMONIE (August 8, 2007) - Bob Salt has been named the head coach of the UW-Stout women's team.

Salt, who has been an instructor at Stout since 1987 in the Human Development and Family Studies program, is beginning his first stint as a collegiate coach, but has been either a tennis pro, high school coach or tennis instructor since his collegiate days at the University of Maine in Orono, Maine. Salt was a four-year varsity player for the Black Bears, playing No. 1 doubles for three years. Salt played No. 6 through No. 2 varsity singles throughout his career.

Salt has been a head coach at Orono, Maine, High School, and Central Catholic High School in Lafayette, Ind., and an assistant coach at Bangor, Maine, High School. In addition to providing private lessons for the past 25-plus years, Salt has been a tennis pro at Lafayette Tennis Club in Lafayette, Ind., at Elk's Country Club in West Lafayette, Ind., and Blue Hill Country Club in Blue Hill, Maine.

"When I started at Stout 20 years ago, I hoped to some day coach one of Stout's tennis teams," Salt said. Getting a chance to coach the women's team is a great joy for me. What adds to my excitement is that this fall's team is so strong.

"I hope my background as a player and coach, along with my academic knowledge of human development and interpersonal dynamics will assist the players to maximize their level of play."

Salt completed a double major at the University of Maine, earning bachelor degrees in Politcal Science and Broadcasting/Film. He earned his masters from the University of Maine in Child Development and Family Relations and his doctorate from Purdue University in Child Development and Family Studies.

Since arriving at Stout in 1987, Salt has taught Family Studies, Family Relations, Family Law, Family Theories, Lifespan Sexuality, Gender and Relationships, an Honors Seminar in Human Development and a number of other classes.

Named one of UW-Stout's Outstanding Teacher of the Year in 2005, Salt was a Dahlgren Professor in 2002-04, where he traveled to Kenya and Peru for research, and received Stout's School of Home Economics Teaching Excellence Award in 1992. Salt was the program director of the Human Development and Family Studies Program from 1992-99, the department chair of Human Development and Family Studies and an associate dean for the College of Human Development from January 2006 to August 2007.

A native of Acton, Mass, Salt is an avid Boston Red Sox fan. He and his wife, Ann, a Menomonie native, reside in Menomonie and are the parents of two high school age children, Josh and Emily.

Salt succeeds Joe Hoffer, who left the University recently to accept a trainer position at the University of Alabama.

WINONA, Minn (April 14, 2007) - Michelle Hohl (Jr, Portage) and Kelly Gillis (Fr, Eagan, Minn) combined to pick up UW-Stout's only win during the team's final day of competition for the 2006-07 season.

Hohl and Gilles took the No. 3 doubles game with an 8-6 win. Hohl was the only singles player to win a set Saturday. Hohl lost her opening set, 6-1, to Aubrey Hirsch at No. 4 singles, then came back for a 6-2 win to force a first-to-10 third game. Hirsch prevailed with a 10-5 win.

Stout opens spring with 6-3 win over MLC

MENOMONIE (April 2, 2007) - Danielle Farchmin (So, Waukesha), Michelle Hohl (Jr, Portage), Jariann Hurlburt (So, Durand) and Kelly Gillis (Fr, Eagan, Minn) all were part of two wins as UW-Stout opened the spring portion of their schedule with a 6-3 win over Martin Luther, Monday.

Farchmin defeated Kelly Mellgren at No. 3 singles, 7-5, 6-1, the teamed with Hohl at No. 2 doubles for an 8-2 win. Hohl won at No. 4 singles, defeating Alissa Alonte, 6-1, 6-3. Hurlburt took a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles, while Gillis won, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 6 singles. The duo combined for an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles.

Stout return to action Saturday, April 14 when they host St. Mary's and Wisconsin Lutheran.

Carr finishes as runner-up at WIAC Championships

MADISON (October 22, 2006) - Katie Carr (Fr, Rochester, Minn) had UW-Stout's best individual finish at the WIAC Tennis Championships since 1997 as she finished second at No. 6 singles Sunday.

Carr came into the tournament as the number one seed in her flight, earning a first round bye. Carr defeated Sarah Schoenwaelder of UW-La Crosse, 6-4, 6-1, in the second round. Carr had UW-Eau Claire's Brenna McCormick down, 6-3, in the first set of the championship match, but fell, 6-1, 6-1, in the final two sets to earn the runner-up spot.

Carr and No. 3 doubles partner Michelle Hohl (Jr, Portage) placed fourth and Jodie Czech (So, Foley, Minn) finished fourth at No. 2 singles.

As a team, Stout finished fifth in the tournament. Combined with their fourth place dual finish, the Blue Devils placed fifth overall in the final league standings.
