Stout ties for first, edged in tie-breaker

MIDDLETON (May 2, 2008) - UW-Stout finished in a tie with host Edgewood College, but the Eagles took the team title by virtue of the tie-breaker at the Edgewood College Challenge Friday at Bishops Bay Country Club.
The host Eagles and Stout tied with a 303 in the final regular season tournament of the season, but Edgewood edged Stout by hitting a better cumulative score on the back nine.
Stout's Derek Holmes (So, Anoka, Minn) tied for third with a 74, two strokes off the pace. Sheldon Haedtke (Fr, Winona, Minn) and Paul Speltz (So, Winona, Minn) tied for seventh with a 76.
Only two strokes separated first place Stout and last place UW-Eau Claire (305).
Bids for the NCAA Division III tournament are expected to be announced late this weekend.

Holmes finishes fourth at Gustavus meet

JORDAN, Minn (April 22, 2008) - Derek Holmes (So, Anoka, Minn) entered the day in fourth place, and finished the tournament in fourth place as UW-Stout finished fifth as a team at the Bobby Krig Invitational at the Ridges at Sand Creek near Jordan, Minn.
Holmes shot a 76 on the final 18 holes to finish with a total of 220 (75-69-76) for the 54 holes, eight strokes off the leader. Sheldon Haedtke (Fr, Winona, Minn) also shot a 76 and finished with a 229 (80-73-76) to move up seven places to finish in a tie for 15th.
The Blue Devils will be at the Augsburg Invitational, April 25-26.

LA SUEUR, Minn (April 21, 2008) - After shooting the lowest score of the second round, UW-Stout's Derek Holmes (So, Anoka, Minn) was in fourth place after the first day of the Bobby Krigs Invitational hosted by Gustavus Adolphus College Monday.
Holmes carded a 75 in the first round, then came back with a 69, matching a score by Grant Shafrawski of St. Thomas. Holmes' 144 puts him two strokes off the lead.
Sheldon Haedtke (Fr, Winona, Minn) was in a tie for 22nd with a 153 (80-73),
As a team, Stout is currently in fifth place. St. John's is in first. The invitational will conclude Tuesday, April 22.

COLFAX (April 17, 2008) - UW-Stout's Derek Holmes (So, Anoka, Minn) took first place at the Sten Pierce/Border Battle Invitational as the Blue Devils finished second as a team, Thursday at Whitetail Golf Course.
Holmes and St. Thomas' John Treacy matched eached other on both rounds, finishing with identical 70s and 34s on the first round and 36s on the second turn. Holmes won the individual title on a card playoff by scoring a birdie on the last hole, while Treacy played it even par.
Paul Speltz (So, Winona, Minn) finished fifth for the Blue Devils with a 72 and Sheldon Haedtke (Fr, Winona, Minn) was seventh with a 73.
Stout will be at the Gustavus Adolphus Invitational, April 21-22.

Blue Devils finish in seventh at spring opener

DUBUQUE, Iowa (April 6, 2008) - In conditions that can only loosely defined as spring, the UW-Stout men's golf team finished seventh of 22 teams at the two-day Duhawk Invitational hosted by Loras College Monday.
Paul Speltz (So, Winona, Minn) paced Stout on the day that held a wind chill factor in the mid-20s, with winds whipping between 20-25 mph. Speltz finished with a two-day total of 155 for a three-way tie at 14th. Sheldon Haedtke (Fr, Winona, Minn) tied for 23rd (159).
As a team, Stout finished with 640 strokes, 64 off the pace set by Central College (603).
Stout will host the Border Battle, Thursday, April 17.

DUBUQUE, Iowa (April 6, 2008) - UW-Stout was in a tie for seventh place out of 22 teams after the first day of competition at the Loras College Duhawk Invite Sunday.
Paul Speltz (So, Winona, Minn) was in a tie for 13th (76), while Matt Fiedler (Fr, Plymouth, Minn) was tied for 20th (77) one stroke back.
Sheldon Haedtke (Fr, Winona, Minn) was tied for 28th (78), Derek Holmes (So, Anoka, Minn) tied 55th (81) and Tyler Mahlik (So, Clintonville) was tied for 105th (92).
The meet will conclude Monday, April 7.
Blue Devils finish sixth at Viterbo

LA CROSSE (October 8, 2007) - UW-Stout's Matt Fiedler (Fr, Plymouth, Minn) finished ninth with a score of 150 (72-78) in the Blue Devils' final match of the fall season Monday.
The Blue Devils placed sixth as a team with a 618 total two-day score at the Ronnie Eastman Invitational hosted by Viterbo University at the La Crosse Country Club.
Adam Chandler (Jr, Burnsville, Minn), playing as an individual, placed 12th (76-77 - 153). Paul Speltz (So, Winona, Minn) and Marc Nicklaus (So, Cottage Grove, Minn) tied for 22nd with 156 strokes.

LA CROSSE (October 7, 2007) - UW-Stout's Matt Fiedler (Fr, Plymouth, Minn) was in a tie for sixth place after the first day of the Ronnie Eastman Invitational sponsored by Viterbo University at the La Crosse Country Club Sunday.
Fiedler carried a 72 into the clubhouse as Stout was in fourth place as a team.
Derek Holmes (Fr, Anoka, Minn) was in a tie for 11th (75), Paul Speltz (So, Winona, Minn) in a tie for 16th (76), Sheldon Haedtke (Fr, Winona, Minn) in a tie for 28th (77) and Tyler Mahlik (So, Clintonville) in a tie for 31st (78).
Playing as individuals, Blue Devils Adam Chandler (Jr, Burnsville, Minn) and Marc Nickolaus (So, Cottage Grove, Minn) were tied for 16th with 76.
Play will conclude Sunday, Oct. 8. The meet is the last of the fall season for Stout.
Blue Devils finish fifth at Blugold Invite

EAU CLAIRE (September 24, 2007) - UW-Stout's Matt Fiedler (Fr, Plymouth, Minn) had one of the top scores of the second day of competition as the Blue Devils finished fifth at the UW-Eau Claire Frank Wigglesworth Blugold Invitational Monday at the Eau Claire Country Club.
Fielder carded a 72 on the second day to go with his first-day 79, tallying a 151 to tie for 12th. Only one golfer, Gustavus Adolphus' Mark Stuckey, shot lower than Fielder on Monday. Stuckey hit a 71 and tied with Fielder for 12th. Co-medalist Kyle Rohlfs of Gustavus hit 72 both days and Eau Claire's Peter Wendt, who tied with Rohlfs, had a 69 on the first day. There was a smattering of 71s and 72s on both days, including teammate Derek Holmes (Fr, Anoka, Minn) who finished one stroke behind Fiedler with a 152 (72-80).
As a team, Stout finished with 627 strokes, 317 on the first day, 310 on the second.
Stout will conclude the fall portion of their season when they participate in the Viterbo Invitational, Oct. 7-8, at the La Crosse Country Club.

EAU CLAIRE (September 23, 2007) - UW-Stout was in fourth place after the first day of competition at the UW-Eau Claire Frank Wigglesworth Blugold Invitational at the Eau Claire Country Club.
Stout had carded a 317. UW-Eau Claire was in first (294). Fifteen teams were competing. No other details were available. Play will conclude, Monday, Sept. 24.
Blue Devils take top spots at Edgewood tourney

COTTAGE GROVE (September 17, 2007) - As a team, UW-Stout took the top two spots and individually, the Blue Devils took home five of the 10 trophies in winning the Edgewood College Culvers' Fall Classic Monday at the Oaks near Madison.
The Blue Devils' varsity team, in second place after the first day, overtook Robert Morris College on the windy morning of play, finishing with a two day total of 607 strokes, scoring a 305 Sunday and a 302 Monday.
The Blue Devils' B squad played very steady, hitting 306 both days to finish second with a 612, only five strokes behind the varsity squad.
The win marks Stout's first tournament title since returning to varsity status during the 2006-07 season.
Individually, Geoff Pirkl (Jr, Stoughton) tied for second, playing close to home, finishing with a 149 (75 - 74), seven strokes off the lead of 142 by Robert Morris' Chris Myers, who held the top spot the entire two days.
Matt Fiedler (Fr, Plymouth, Minn) of the Stout B team, finished in a tie for fourth with a 160 (78 - 72). His second round 72 was the second lowest score of the day.
Tyler Mahlik (So, Clintonville) finished sixth (77 - 74 -- 151), Derek Holmes (So, Anoka, Minn) was seventh (76 - 76 -- 152) and Logan Stelter (Fr, Park Falls) was tied for eighth (77 - 77 -- 154).
Stout will be at the Frank Wigglesworth Blugold Invitational, Sept. 23-24, at the Eau Claire Country Club.

Blue Devils in second after first day at Edgewood

COTTAGE GROVE (September 16, 2007) - UW-Stout was in second place and so was Adam Chandler (Jr, Burnsville, Minn) after the first day of the Edgewood College Culver's Invitational Sunday at the Oaks.
Chandler, playing for the Stout B team, hit a 74 on the opening day of play in his first tournament of the season for a two-way tie for second. Chandler hit a 36 and a 38 to trail Chris Myers of front running Robert Morris College by four strokes.
The Stout A team finished the first round with 305 strokes, while the Chandler-led B team finished with 306 strokes.
Geoff Pirkl (Jr, Stoughton) was tied for fourth with a first round 75 and Derek Holmes (So, Anoka, Minn) is tied for eighth with a first round 76.
Play will conclude Monday, Sept. 17.
Blue Devils slip to ninth at season opener

CHASKA, Minn (September 10, 2007) - Maybe it was the course. Maybe it was playing with some top rated teams. Maybe it was just lack of collegiate inexperience. Whatever it was, UW-Stout slipped from fourth to ninth place on the second and final day of their season opener at the Augsburg Fall Classic Monday at Chaska Town Course.
Derek Holmes (So, Anoka, Minn) proved to be very steady for the Blue Devils, hitting a pair of 77s to tie for 16th place qirh 154 strokes.. Paul Speltz (So, Winona, Minn) collected a 78 and 79 for a two day total of 157 and a tie for 28th place. Sheldon Haedtke (Fr, Winona, Minn) had a 78 and 81 for a 159 and a tie for 35th place.
Stout will compete at the Oaks near Madison in the Edgewood College Culver Classic, Sept. 16-17.

HUTCHINSON, Minn (September 9, 2007) - UW-Stout was in fourth place after the first day of their season opener, trailing only the defending national champion and the two top ranked teams in the West Region at Crow River Country Club, Sunday, in the Augsburg Fall Classic.
The Blue Devils, led by Derek Holmes' (So, Anoka, Minn) first round 77, tallied a 312. Top ranked Gustavus Adolphus was in first (290), defending DIII champion St. John's was second (305) and second ranked UW-Eau Claire was third (306).
Paul Speltz (So, Winona, Minn) and Sheldon Haedtke (Fr, Winona, Minn) both stroked a 78, Andy Smith (Fr, Grand Marais, Minn) had a 79 and Geoff Pirkl (Jr, Stoughton) finished with an 81.
Play will conclude Monday, Sept. 10 at Chaska Town Course in Chaska, Minn.

MENOMONIE (September 1, 2007) - Eight players have been selected for the 2007-08 men's golf team and several players will be invited to participate in a playoff to fill the two remaining roster spots. These two invitees will be contacted via telephone or by e-mail by Sunday, Sept. 2.
All players listed below and playoff participants are required to attend a team meeting Monday, Sept. 3 at 8 p.m. in Room 217 of the Sports & Fitness Center.
The Blue Devils open the 2007 fall season by participating in the Auggie Fall Invitational, Sept. 9-10.

2007-08 men's golf tryouts are scheduled

MENOMONIE (May 7, 2007) - Tryouts for the 2007-08 UW-Stout
men's golf team are scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 29 through Friday, Aug.
31. A mandatory first meeting (you must be present at this meeting to participate
in the tryouts) will be held Wednesday, Aug. 29 at 8 p.m. in Room 217 of
the Sports & Fitness Center on the UW-Stout campus.
Coach Terry Watkins will introduce the program and explain the tryout process,
which will include 27 holes on Thursday, Aug. 30 and 27 holes on Friday,
Aug. 31 at the Chippewa Valley Golf Club
in Menomonie. Tee times will be assigned at the Aug. 30 meeting and will
begin at 7:30 a.m. from the blue tees. Cost for the tryout will be approximately
$50. Coach Watkins recommends that prospective players play a round or two
at Chippewa Valley Golf Club prior
to the tryouts. Tee times at Chippewa Valley can be obtained by calling
715-235-9808 or 800-494-8987.
The team will be cut to 10 players at the conclusion of the 54 holes.
All potential players must have a physical to participate
in the tryouts. The physical
forms are available on the Blue Devil athletic website on the Athletic
Training site. The completed physical forms must be
turned in at the Wednesday, Aug. 29 meeting.
Housing for each participant during the tryouts is your responsibility.
Dorm rooms on campus will not be available until Sunday,
Sept. 2. Area lodging
is available.

BRAINERD, Minn (April 29, 2007) -Tyler Mahlik (So, Clintonville), playing for UW-Stout's B team, placed fourth at the Augsburg College Spring Classic at The Classic at Madden's on Gull Lake Sunday.
Mahlik, playing very consistently on the course both days, finished with 154, six strokes behind first place finisher John Treacy of St. Thomas. Mahlik scored a 76 on both days of the tournament.
The Stout A team moved ahead of the Stout B team after the first day and finished third with 648 strokes. The B team was fifth with 653 strokes. St. Thomas won the event with 620 strokes.
Geoff Pirkl (Jr, Stoughton) finished seventh for the Blue Devils with a 155, while Charlie Mann (Fr, St. Michael, Minn), playing as an individual, carded a 160. Josh Angrimson (So, Lindstrom, Minn) and Paul Speltz (Fr, Winona, Minn) tied for 10th with a 162.
The tournament wrapped up the regular season for the Blue Devils, who returned to varsity status after a 15 year hiatus.
