Wolgemuth, Hanson on USCHO.com team

MENOMONIE (April 7, 2008) - UW-Stout defenseman Jack Wolgemuth (Jr, Anchorage, Alaska) and forward Derek Hanson (So, Bemidji, Minn) were named to the USCHO.com all-star team.

Wolgemuth, who was named to the West Region first team, scored seven goals and 23 assists for 30 points. The 6-foot, 3-inch defenseman had five power play goals for Stout (18-9-3), which qualified to the NCAA playoffs this year for the first time. Wolgemuth was a first team all-conference selection in the WIAC and the NCHA.

Hanson was an honorable mention pick. Hanson led Stout with 22 goals this season, and ranked third in the NCHA in goals. Hanson had a league-high 13 power play goals and notched five game-winning-goals.

Jack Wolgemuth second team All-American

Jack WolgemuthMENOMONIE (March 22, 2008) - UW-Stout defenseman Jack Wolgemuth (Jr, Anchorage, Alaska) was named to the second team of the RBK Hockey Division III Men's All-American ice hockey team.

Wolgemuth scored seven goals and 23 assists for 30 points. The 6-foot, 3-inch defenseman had five power play goals for Stout (18-9-3), which qualifiied to the NCAA playoffs this year for the first time. Wolgemuth was a first team all-conference selection in the WIAC and the NCHA.

St. Thomas downs Stout in NCAA playoffs

MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn (March 12, 2008) - St. Thomas scored two goals within a 10 second period midway through the third period and bounced UW-Stout, 4-1, from the NCAA Division III tournament.

With the score tied at 1-1 after two periods, the Tommies (20-6-2) attacked Blue Devil goalie Mike Stone (Sr, West St. Paul, Minn) hard. St. Thomas outshot Stout 12-4 over the first 10 minutes of the final stanza and landed a power play goal at the 10 minute mark by Nate Ryan. Ten second later, at 10:10, the Tommies took a two goal lead on a goal by Sean Bryant. The Tommies sealed the deal with an empty net goal by Nick Nelson with just less than a minute left.

The game was tied after the first period. The Blue Devils opened the scoring when Derek Hanson (So, Bemidji, Minn) scored at the 7:08 mark, with assists by Joel Gaulrapp (So, Owatonna, Minn) and Scott Motz (So, Lake Elmo, Minn). The Tommies knotted the score around the 16 minute mark on a goal by Rob Johnson.

The Blue Devils outshot St. Thomas 14-7 in the second period, but couldn't crack one past goalie Tyler Chestnut.

St. Thomas outshot Stout, 35-28 on the evening. Stout held a 23-17 lead in shots after two periods. St. Thomas will travel to St. Norbert to play the top seeded Green Knights, Saturday, March 15.

Blue Devils earn first ever NCAA tourney bid

MENOMONIE (March 9, 2008) - For the first time in school history, the UW-Stout hockey team has been invited to participate in the NCAA Division III Ice Hockey Championships.

The Blue Devils (18-8-3) will travel to St. Thomas, Wednesday, March 12 at 7 p.m. at the St. Thomas Ice Arena at I-494 and Dodd Road in St. Paul, Minn. The Tommies won the automatic berth by defeating Hamline University, 4-1, in the Minnesota Intercollgiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) tournament.

Stout and St. Thomas met on Nov. 20, 2007, in St. Paul, Minn, and the two teams played to a 3-3 tie. Stout's Joel Gaulrapp (So, Owatonna, Minn) scored with 54 seconds remaining in regulation to forge the tie. Stout won the 2006-07 meeting, 4-3.

The sixth ranked Tommies (19-6-2) are making their 13th trip into the NCAA playoffs, while Stout is making their first foray into the Big Dance.

Nick Pernula is the Tommie's leading scorer with 39 points (12 goals, 17 assists). Nate Ryan has scored 18 goals to lead the Tommies and has 17 assists.

The 11th ranked Blue Devils are led by Derek Hanson (So, Bemidji, Minn) with 41 points (21g, 20a). Gaulrapp has 18 goals and 17 assists.

The winner advances to play top-seeded St. Norbert College, Saturday, March 15 in Green Bay.

Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for students. Advance tickets will be available at the UW-Stout athletic office beginning at 8 a.m., Tuesday, March 11.

In the east region, Trinity (Conn) will be at U Mass-Dartmouth Wednesday, March 12. The winner of that game will play at Elmira, Saturday, March 15. In other Saturday matchups, Manhattanville is at Norwich and Hobart is at Plattsburgh.

The Championship round is scheduled for March 22-23 in Lake Placid, NY.

St. Norbert nips Stout in Peters Cup final in OT

GREEN BAY (March 8, 2008) - St. Norbert's Marc Belanger scored with 2:57 remaining in a 20-minute sudden death overtime in the championship game for the NCHA's Peters Cup at the Cornerstone Community Center Saturday to give the Green Knights a 4-3 win over UW-Stout..

St. Norbert (24-1-4) got the scoring going midway through the first period when Tyler Allen scored. The Green Knights doubled the score on their first power play opportunity of the game as Sam Tikka slipped the puck past Blue Devil goalie Mike Stone (Sr, West St. Paul, Minn) at the 16:26 mark of the first stanza.

The Blue Devils (18-8-3) cut the lead in half on a shot by Scott Motz (So, Lake Elmo, Minn) less than a minute later, with assists by Paul Henderson (So, Menomonie) and Derek Hanson (So, Bemidji, Minn).

Both team had ample opportunities in the second period, as Stout went 0-for-3 on the power play and St. Norbert was 0-for-2. Both Stone and St. Norbert goalie Kyle Jones were solid in the second. Jones stopped 14 shots, while Stone pushed aside 12. Stone would finish the night with 35 saves, while Jones would record 31.

The Blue Devils took the lead with back-to-back goals in the third period. Robert Carr (Fr, Roseau, Minn) tied the game for Stout three minutes into the period with a power play goal and Luke Schroeder (Sr, Minneapolis, Minn) gave Stout the lead less than two minutes later. St. Norbert's Brad Herman tied the score about seven minutes into the period.

The Green Knights earned the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament. Stout will find out late Sunday night if they advance to the tournament for the first time ever.

The game was the second consecutive 20-minute overtime game for Stout and is the longest game in Stout hockey history as the Blue Devils made their first appearance in the NCHA championship game.

Motz scores game-winner in overtime

MENOMONIE (March 1, 2008) - Scott Motz (So, Lake Elmo, Minn) scored with 5:47 left in overtime to give UW-Stout a 3-2 win over UW-Eau Claire in an NCHA semi-final game Saturday at the Dunn County Ice Arena.

The Blue Devils (18-7-3) scored first when Nick Klaren (North St. Paul, Minn) 25 seconds into the second period.

The Blugolds (11-16-1) tied the game two minutes later on a goal by Bryan Plaszcz, then took the lead at 14:18 of the second period on a goal by Peter Bracker.

The Blue Devils knotted the with five minutes left in regulation on a goal by Paul Henderson (So, Menomonie).

Mike Stone (West St. Paul, Minn) had 26 saves for Stout, while Tyler Brigl had 36 saves for the Blugolds.

Stout will play at St. Norbert, Saturday, March 8 at 7 p.m. in the NCHA championship game.

Gaulrapp, Wolgemuth all-conference in both leagues

MENOMONIE (February 28, 2008) - Forward Joel Gaulrapp (So, Owatonna, Minn) and defenseman Jack Wolgemuth (Jr, Anchorage, Alaska) were first team picks by both the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) and the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC).

Gaulrapp has scored 18 goals and 16 assists for 34 points. Wolgemuth has seven goals and is tied for the team lead in assists with 21.

Named to both the NCHA and WIAC honorable mention squads were Derek Hanson (So, Bemidji, Minn), Bobby Kuehl (So, St. Paul, Minn) and Mike Stone (Sr, West St. Paul, Minn).

Hanson is the Blue Devils' leading scorer, rolling up 21 goals and 18 assists for 39 points. Of his 21 goals, 13 came on the power play. Kuehl has one goal and eight assists for nine points. Stone has worked his way back into the starting line-up after working through a preseason injury that limited his play. Stone has appeared in 16 games, and has a record of 6-3-2. He has a goals against average of 2.09 with a saves percentage of .924.

Andy Sternberg (So, Duluth, Minn) was named to the WIAC honorable mention team and was also placed on the WIAC All-Sportsmanship team. Sternberg has 10 goals and six assists.

Seven Blue Devils were named to the NCHA All-Academic team.  Jeff DeFrancesca (Sr, Mt. Prospect, Illinois), Jake Erickson (Sr, Rochester, Minn), Andrew Hasbargen (Jr, Warroad, Minn), Luke Schroeder (Sr, Minneapolis, Minn), Scott Sikkink (Sr, Chippewa Falls), Glenn Walker (Sr, Verona) and Jeff Wheeler (Jr, Bainbridge, Washington) all earned this honor. DeFrancesca, Schroeder and Walker have all earned this award three years. To be placed on the team, the student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 GPA and have earned a minimum of 50 credits.

Blue Devils advance to semi's by beating Point

MENOMONIE (February 23, 2008) - UW-Stevens Point drew first blood, but it was UW-Stout that would drain the Pointers pale as the Blue Devils took a 7-1 win over the Pointers Saturday at the Dunn County Ice Arena.

Just like the night before, Stevens Point (14-9-4) scored first when Garret Suter scored midway through the first half.

But like the night before when Stout defeated the Pointers 8-4 in the first game of this NCHA quarterfinals series, the Blue Devils (17-7-3) scored a series of unanswered goals, this time seven straight goals without an answer.

Derek Hanson (So, Bemidji, Minn) led the way getting the hat trick, scoring once in the first period and twice in the second period. The Blue Devils also got goals from Jack Wolgemuth (Jr, Anchorage, Alaska), Scott Motz (So, Lake Elmo, Minn), Joel Gaulrapp (So, Owatonna, Minn) and a short handed goal from Andy Sternberg (So, Duluth, Minn). All of Hanson's goals were on the power play, as was Wolgemuth's and Motz's.

Mike Stone (Sr, West St. Paul, Minn) picked up the win with 27 saves. Thomas Speer took the loss with 25 saves.

Stout will host UW-Eau Claire, Saturday, March 1 in the NCHA semi-finals.

Blue Devils come from behind to down Pointers

MENOMONIE (February 22, 2008) - UW-Stout continually came from behind, then opened the floodgates in the third period to defeat UW-Stevens Point, 8-4, in the quarterfinals of the NCHA Peters Cup Friday at the Dunn County Ice Arena.

Trailing 4-2 with six minutes left in the second period, Stout (16-7-3) racked up six consecutive goals. David Larson (Fr, Warroad, Minn) and Derek Hanson (So, Bemidji, Minn) each scored power play goals to close out the second period

Just a minute into the third period, Joel Gaulrapp (So, Owatonna, Minn) scored. Paul Henderson (So, Menomonie) scored six minutes into the period and, only a minute later, Nick Klaren (Jr, North St. Paul, Minn) chased Pointer starter Thomas Speer. Andy Sternberg (So, Duluth, Minn) closed out the scoring on a goal with three minutes left in the contest.

The Pointers (14-8-4) opened the scoring only two minutes into the game when Nic Polaski scored. The Blue Devils knotted the score at the eight minute mark when defenseman Jack Wolgemuth (Jr, Anchorage, Alaska) scored. The Pointers jumped back out to a one goal lead on a goal by Brett Beckfeld with seven minutes left in the period. Stout tied the score at 2-2 just before the end of the first period on a goal by Robert Carr (Fr, Roseau, Minn).

Josh Calleja doubled the score to a 4-2 Pointer lead with back-to-back goals early in the second period. Mike Stone (Sr, West St. Paul, Minn) came in at goal and shut the Pointers out the rest of the way, making 17 saves. Speer finished the night allowing seven goals and made 25 saves. Stout outshot Stevens Point, 35-28.

The two teams will meet again Saturday, Feb. 23 at 7:30 p.m.

Falcons jump out to early lead, down Stout

RIVER FALLS (February 15, 2008) - UW-River Falls scored three first period goals and UW-Stout could never recover as the Blue Devils lost a 5-3 decision at River Falls Friday.

The Falcons (16-6-3, 8-5-1) got three goals in the first 10 minutes of the game and added another early in the second period. But Stout (15-7-3, 7-5-2) did mount a charge in the second period as Jack Wolgemuth (Jr, Anchorage, Alaska) scored a pair of goals to pull Stout to within 4-1.

The Falcons' Matt Szpura scored another goal early in the third and Stout's Scott Motz (So, Lake Elmo, Minn) scored midway through the period.

Stout outshot River Falls, 42-34 on the night.

The Falcons earned the second seed in the NCHA Peters Cup, while Stout finished with the third seed. The Falcons also won the WIAC crown.

Stout tied in points with UW-Superior (12-5-8, 6-4-4) in the NCHA, but the Blue Devils earned the tie-breaker by having one more NCHA wins than Superior. Stout will host UW-Stevens Point, Friday, Feb. 22 and Saturday, Feb. 23. Both games are slated for 7:30 p.m.

Nick Klaren earns honors in both leagues

Nick KlarenMENOMONIE (February 12, 2008) - UW-Stout forward Nick Klaren (Jr, West St. Paul, Minn) scored two goals in leading Stout to a 3-3 tie with top-ranked St. Norbert and was named the NCHA and WIAC player of the week.

Klaren scored the game opening goal with five minutes left in the first period to put Stout up on St. Norbert, 1-0, Feb. 9. Midway through the third period, Klaren’s second goal of the game, which came on the power play, tied the score at 2-2. Klaren also recorded an assist in the Blue Devils’ 7-0 win over Lake Forest College the night before.

Klaren currently has five goals and eight assists on the season. Stout wraps up the regular season Friday, Feb. 15 when they travel to UW-River Falls.

Blue Devils tie with top ranked St. Norbert

MENOMONIE (February 9, 2008) - Just when it looked like UW-Stout was going to trip up St. Norbert College, the top ranked team in NCAA Division III, the Green Knights came back to tie the score, and the game finished in a 3-3 tie, Saturday at the Dunn County Ice Arena.

After two period, St. Norbert (19-1-4, 9-0-4) held a 2-1 lead over the Blue Devils (15-6-3, 7-4-2). But the Blue Devils came back to take the lead when Nick Klaren (Jr, North St. Paul, Minn) scored midway through the period on the power play, and two minutes later, Derek Hanson (So, Bemidji, Minn) gave the Blue Devils a 3-2 lead with a power play goal.

The Green Knights pulled their goalie with less than a minute left and Marc Belanger scored off the face off with 16 seconds remaining in regulation.

Stout opened the scoring when Klaren scored his first goal of the game with five minutes left in the first period. St. Norbert scored two second period goals by Ryan Petersen and Steven Sleep.

Mike Stone (Sr, West St. Paul, Minn) finished with 26 saves, while St. Norbert's Blake Bashor recorded 25 saves.

The tie keeps Stout in second place. Stout will conclude the regular season Friday, Feb. 16 at UW-River Falls. The Blue Devils are assured of at least a first round NCHA Peters Cup playoff series.

Blue Devils blow past Foresters

MENOMONIE (February 8, 2008) - UW-Stout scored two goals in the first period, then salted the game away with five goals in the third period as the Blue Devils defeated Lake Forest College, 7-0, Friday at the Dunn County Ice Arena.

Stout will host St. Norbert College, Saturday, Feb. 9 at 7:30 p.m. The Green Knight's captured the NCHA regular season title with a 4-1 win over UW-River Falls. Stout's win, coupled with River Falls' loss, moves the Blue Devils into second place in the NCHA.

Danny Ryan (Fr, Niles, Ill) scored the final two goals of the game and five other Blue Devils (15-6-2, 7-4-1) scored over the last place Foresters (3-19-0, 1-11-0).

Robert Carr (Fr, Roseau, Minn) got things going in the first period, scoring midway through the stanza. Derek Hanson (So, Bemidji, Minn) scored on the power play with two minutes left in the period.

In the third, in addition to Carr, the Blue Devils got goals from Jeff Wheeler (Jr, Bainbridge, Wash), Luke Schroeder (Sr, Minneapolis, Minn), and Scott Sikkink (Sr, Chippewa Falls). Jeff DeFrancesca (Sr, Mt. Prospect, Ill) gathered three assists, all in the third period.

Mike Stone (Sr, West St. Paul, Minn) recorded the win with 23 saves and gave way to Glenn Walker (Sr, Verona) for the final seven minutes. Walker had one save. The Foresters' Brandon Kohuch finished the night with 36 saves.

 

Blue Devils drop gloves to battle cancer

MENOMONIE (February 4, 2008) - The UW-Stout hockey team is enlisting your help in raising money to benefit The American Cancer Society.

The Blue Devils will play host to the Foresters of Lake Forest College Friday, Feb. 8 at 7:30 p.m. Throughout the game, there will be t-shirt sales as well as a 50/50 raffle with all of the proceeds going to the American Cancer Society. Attendees will also have the opportunity to bid on autographed items both from Blue Devil and professional players in a silent auction. Blue Devil hockey and its supporters greatly appreciate your help and generosity in support of a cause they are passionate about.

The American Cancer Society is a nonprofit organization that is committed to fighting cancer through programs of research, education, patient service, advocacy, and rehabilitation. The ACS mission statement is as follows: "The American Cancer Society is the nationwide community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy and service."

Blue Devils and Pointers fight to tie

STEVENS POINT (February 2, 2008) - In hard hitting, well-played game, UW-Stout and UW-Stevens Point fought to a 1-1 overtime tie, Saturday at Willett Arena.

After nearly three scoreless periods, the Blue Devils (14-6-2, 6-4-1) drew first blood when Andy Sternberg (Fr, Duluth, Minn) clanged a shot off the opposite pipe from the far side circle and snuck the puck past goalie Tom Speer with 5:21 left in the game.

The Pointers (14-5-3, 5-4-2) answered back a little more than two minutes later when Josh Calleja scored off a face off from a pass by Pat Lee.

Stout's Mike Stone (Sr, West St. Paul, Minn) recorded 29 saves, while the Pointers' Speer had 25 saves.

With the tie, Stout moves into a tie for second in the NCHA with UW-River Falls, which dropped a game at UW-Eau Claire.

Stout scores three power plays to down EC

MENOMONIE (February 1, 2008) - UW-Stout scored three power play goals to down UW-Eau Claire, 4-1, Friday at the Dunn County Ice Arena.

The Blue Devils (14-6-1, 6-4-0) opened the scoring with a power play only two minutes into the game when Andy Sternberg (Fr, Duluth, Minn). Derek Hanson (So, Bemidji, Minn) added what would prove to be the game winning goal five minutes later, an unassisted goal.

After a scoreless second period, Eau Claire (8-13-0, 4-6-0) cut the lead in half when Andrew Johnson scored five minutes into the third period.

But the power play was friendly to Stout, which converted on 3-of-6 opportunities, two in the third. Stout's leading scorer, Joel Gaulrapp (So, Owatonna, Minn) scored at the six minute mark and Scott Motz (So, Lake Elmo, Minn) chipped in a shot two minutes later.

Stout's Mike Stone (Sr, West St. Paul, Minn) had 29 saves, as did Eau Claire's Tyler Brigl.

Stout will be at UW-Stevens Point, Saturday, Feb. 2.

DeFrancesca a finalist for Hockey Humanitarian

Jeff DeFrancescaMENOMONIE (January 29, 2008) - UW-Stout defenseman Jeff DeFrancesca (Sr, Mt. Prospect, Ill) was one of eight finalists for the Hockey Humanitarian Award, presented by BNY Mellon Wealth Management. The award is presented annually to college hockey’s finest citizen.

The finalists, along with DeFrancesca, listed in alphabetical order, are: Ryan Adler Jr. Hobart College; William Bruce Sr. Williams College; Ethan Cox So. Colgate University; Jeff DeFrancesca Sr. University of Wisconsin – Stout; Missy Elumba Jr. Northeastern University; Jody Heywood Jr. Ohio State University; Ashley King Sr. Wayne State University; Caralyn Quan Sr. Williams College

Each finalist will be interviewed by members of the selection committee and additional information will be released in late February about each student athlete.

The 13th annual recipient of the award will be named at the 2008 NCAA Division I Frozen Four at a ceremony in conjunction with the NCAA Skills Competition and the Hobey Baker Memorial Award on Friday, April 11 at the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colo.

Superior defeats Stout 1-0, again

SUPERIOR (January 26, 2008) - In a case of near deja vu, UW-Superior defeated UW-Stout, 1-0, for the second time this season as the Yellowjackets scored late in the game to take the win Saturday.

With both goalies pitching shutouts, Superior (10-5-5, 4-4-1) attacked Blue Devils goalie Mike Stone (Sr, West St. Paul, Minn) hard in the final five minutes of the game. The Yellowjackets' Andrew McKenzie trickled a shot past Stone at the 16:42 mark of the game.

The Yellowjackets picked up a rare penalty - there were only five total penalties in the game - and Stout (13-6-1, 5-4-0) pulled Stone with 1:36 left and came with the extra attacker on what was already a power play. Superior goaltender Chad Beiswenger turned back anything Stout threw at him at the end. Stout's leading scorer, Joel Gaulrapp (So, Owatonna, Minn) had one last shot close in with seven seconds remaining, but missed the net.

Stone finished the night with 30 saves, while Beiswenger made 24 saves.

Superior defeated Stout 1-0 in overtime, Nov. 15 in Menomonie. Stout will host UW-Eau Claire, Friday, Feb. 1, then will be at UW-Stevens Point, Saturday, Feb. 2.

Bengtson leads Stout back to winning ways

MENOMONIE (January 25, 2008) - Ben Bengtson (Fr, Warroad, Minn) had played in only one game up to Friday night's game with St. Scholastica. Bengston may have earned himself more ice time, as he scored a goal and an assist to lead UW-Stout to a 3-1 win over St. Scholastica at the Dunn County Ice Arena.

The Saints (7-10-2, 2-5-1) took the early lead when Trevor Geiger scored on the power play - one of only total power play opportunities on the night - with about three minutes remaining in the first period.

The Blue Devils (13-5-1, 5-3-0) wasted little time in the second period taking the lead for good. Bengtson scored three minutes into the second, with an assist by David Larson (Fr, Warroad, Minn). Only 35 seconds later, Jake Erickson (Sr, Rochester, Minn) scored with assists by Robert Carr (Fr, Roseau, Minn) and Luke Schroeder (Sr, Minneapolis, Minn) to give Stout a 2-1 lead. The assist gave Schroeder his sixth straight game with at least one point.

Bengtson had a hand in the third goal, feeding the puck to Andy Sternberg (So, Duluth, Minn) two minutes into the third period. The win broke a two game losing streak for the Blue Devils.

Mike Stone (Sr, West St. Paul, Minn) got the win by stopping 19 shots. Steve Bounds made 21 saves for the Saints.

Stout will be at UW-Superior Saturday, Jan. 26. The game is the FSN-Wisconsin game of the week and will be rebroadast, Friday, Feb. 1 at 9:30 p.m.

St. Mary's doubles up Blue Devils

WINONA, Minn (January 22, 2008) - UW-Stout scored first, but St. Mary's put their goals together in pairs of two and gave the Blue Devils a 4-2 non-conference loss Tuesday.

Paul Henderson (So, Menomonie) gave Stout (12-5-1) the lead only four minutes into the game, getting assists from Jeff Wheeler (Jr, Bainbridge, Wash) and Jake Gullickson (So, Apple Valley, Minn).

But the Cardinals (7-8-2) took the lead later in the period when Morgan Shepherd scored at the 10:28 mark and Matt Shaehely scored four minutes later. Stout tied the score midway through the second period on a power play goal by Luke Schroeder (Sr, Minneapolis, Minn).

But this was meant to be the Cardinals' night as they chased Stout starter Matt Koenig (Jr, Lakeland, Minn) with two rapid fire goals in the third period. Andy Roberts scored at 4:59 in the final stanza and only 23 seconds later, Kevin Eidsmo scored.

Stout outshot the Cardinals over the first two periods, 30-15, but St. Mary's outshot Stout in the third period, 14-13. Koenig turned aside 14 shots, while Mike Stone (Sr, West St. Paul, Minn) stopped all 11 shots he faced in just over 14 minutes of work. St. Mary's goalie Dan Smith stopped 41 shots.

Stout return to NCHA action Friday, Jan. 25 when they host St. Scholastica at 7:30 p.m. Stout will be at UW-Superior, Saturday, Jan. 26.

DeFrancesca a nominee for Hockey Humanitarian

MENOMONIE (January 22, 2008) - UW-Stout defenseman Jeff DeFrancesca (Sr, Mt. Prospect, Ill) was one of 22 nominees for the Hockey Humanitarian Award, presented by BNY Mellon Wealth Management. The award is presented annually to college hockey’s finest citizen.

Finalists for the award will be announced on the Hockey Humanitarian Award Foundation website at www.hockeyhumanitarian.org on January 28. The 13th recipient of the Hockey Humanitarian Award will be selected from the group of finalists and named in a ceremony held in conjunction with the NCAA Skills Competition and the Hobey Baker Memorial Award on Friday, April 11 at the Pepsi Center in Denver during the 2008 men's NCAA Division I Frozen Four.

River Falls edges Blue Devils

MENOMONIE (January 18, 2008) - UW-River Falls scored three first period goals and made the lead stand up as they defeated UW-Stout, 4-3, Friday at the Dunn County Ice Arena.

The Falcons (13-2-3, 5-1-1) opened the scoring when Lance Malark scored at the 5:17 mark of the first period. Stout's Luke Schroeder (Sr, Minneapolis, Minn) knotted the score when he walked into the River Falls goal for the score four minutes later.

River Falls took a 3-1 lead in a near blink of the eye, scoring twice in a 16 second span. Pat Borgestad scored at the 16:40 mark and Nolan Craner scored at 16:56.

Bobby Kuehl (So, St. Paul, Minn) pulled Stout (12-4-1, 4-3-0) to within one, 3-2, with an unassisted goal 13 minutes into the second period. The Falcons' Borgestad gave River Falls a 4-2 lead with goal with less than a minute remaining in the second period.

Stout got their final goal midway through the third period on a Jeff Wheeler (Jr, Bainbridge, Wash) goal.

Stout will be at St. Mary's, Tuesday, Jan. 22, then will host St. Scholastica, Friday, Jan. 25 before heading to UW-Superior, Saturday, Jan. 26.

Defense makes Stone's return a shutout

MOORHEAD, Minn (January 13, 2008) - The UW-Stout defense allowed only 14 shots on goal, helping Mike Stone (Sr, West St. Paul, Minn) his first win of the season as the Blue Devils defeated Concordia-Moorhead, 4-0, Sunday, at Moorhead Sports Center.

Stone, a 2007 All-American, was injured during the preseason and has seen limited action throughout the season. Stone stopped every shot that came his way as the Blue Devils (12-3-1) picked up their first shutout of the season, and his fifth in his career, setting a new Stout career record.

The Blue Devil offensive was very opportunistic throughout the game with the Cobbers, getting a power play goal, a short handed goal and two even strength goal.

Derek Hanson (So, Bemidji, Minn) got the Blue Devils on the board midway through the first period. The Blue Devils scored twice in the second period. Jake Erickson (Sr, Rochester, Minn) scored shorthanded six minutes into the period, his second shorthanded goal of the season.

Jeff Wheeler (Jr, Bainbridge, Wash) made the score 3-0 with a power play goal three minutes before the second intermission. Erickson picked up Stout final goal, scoring seven minutes into the final period. Luke Schroeder (Sr, Minneapolis, Minn) notched three assists in the game. Stout outshot the Cobbers, 28-14.

Stout will host UW-River Falls, Friday, Jan. 18 at 7:30 p.m.

Blue Devils fall to Johnnies in final minute

MENOMONIE (January 11, 2008) - UW-Stout scored three consecutive goals to take a 3-2 lead with three and a half minutes remaining in the game, but St. John's scored two quick goals late in the third period to take their lead back, and held on to win, 4-3, Friday, at Dunn County Ice Arena.

St. John's (6-7-2) struck first when Dylan Decker put a shot in at the 1:06 mark. Shortly thereafter, St. John's Clayton Rehm put his team up 2-0 when he took an assist from Jake Hipp and deposited it in the back of the net.

Joel Gaulrapp (So, Owatonna, Minn) answered back with two goals of his own. He gave Stout (11-3-1) their first goal at the 10-minute mark when he was assisted by Derek Hanson (So, Bemidji, Minn). Just over a minute later, he took the assists from Nick Klaren (Jr, North St. Paul, Minn) and Luke Schroeder (Sr, Minneapolis, Minn) to tie the game up at two goals apiece.

In the second period, the Blue Devils took their first lead of the game when Andy Sternberg (So, Duluth, Minn) was helped out by Klaren and David Larson (Fr, Warroad, Minn) midway through the period. Sternberg scored only 14 seconds into the power play.

Stout's 3-2 lead held until the 16:30 mark of the third period. That is when Rehm and Harren assisted Jared Smith for the game-tying goal.

With just 1:01 to play in the game, the Johnnies Jason Weigel took advantage on the power play and put a shot past goalie Matt Koenig (Jr, Lakeland, Minn) to give them a commanding 4-3 lead.

Koenig made 23 shots for the Blue Devils, while Vince Wheeler had 21 saves for the Johnnies.

Stout will be at Concordia-Moorhead, Sunday, Jan. 13. The Blue Devils will host UW-River Falls, Friday, Jan. 18 at 7:30 p.m.

Blue Devils fall to Canadian team in exhibition

MENOMONIE (January 4, 2008) - Southern Alberta Institute of Technology scored four goals in the second period to power their way to a 5-1 exhibition win over UW-Stout Friday.

The Blue Devils took an early lead when Derrick Bohn (So, Stillwater, Minn) scored a shorthanded goal with an assist by Bobby Kuehl (So, St. Paul, Minn) at the 13 minute mark of the first period.

The Trojans scored four goal within six minutes of each other in the second period, getting two power play goals and a shorthanded to power flurry. TJ Babey scored a shorthanded goal six minutes into the period, followed by a Cam Doull three minutes later. Bryn Gagnon scored twice, once at the 13 minute mark and again in the 14th minute. Kirk Deeg added a late in the third period. SAIT outshot Stout, 29-24.

Stout returns to action Friday, Jan. 11 when they host St. John's University at 7:30 p.m.

Blue Devils roll over Lake Forest

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (December 8, 2007) - After losing big to first place St. Norbert College the night before, the UW-Stout hockey team took out their frustrations on last place Lake Forest College, taking a lopsided 7-2 win Saturday.

The seven goals was the most goals for Stout a 7-1 win over Hamline in early November. Stout's shots on-net came close to doubling Lake Forest's, 44-25.

The Blue Devils (11-2-1, 4-2-0) wasted little time getting on the board. Danny Ryan, Jr, (Fr, Niles, Ill) playing near his old stomping grounds, scored only 1-minute, 26 seconds into the game, getting a shorthanded goal. Luke Schroeder (Sr, Minneapolis, Minn) scored two minutes later and Stout took a 3-0 lead when Joel Gaulrapp (So, Owatonna, Minn) scored on the power play at 12:28.

The Foresters (1-11-1, 0-6-0) took advantage of two power play opportunities to pull to within one goal. Justin Taylor scored with three minutes left in the first period and Adam Love scored three minutes into the second period.

Schroeder scored his second goal of the night three minutes later and Derek Hanson (So, Bemidji, Minn) scored with three minutes left in the period to give Stout a 5-2 lead going into the second intermission.

Paul Henderson (So, Menomonie) and Jeff DeFrancesca (Sr, Mount Prospect, Ill) scored in the third period. Matt Koenig (Jr, Lakeland, Minn) picked up the win for Stout, getting 19 saves. Mike Stone (Sr, West St. Paul, Minn) worked the final 10 minutes, making four saves.

Stout is off until Friday, Jan. 4 when they host Southern Alberta Institute of Technology in an exhibition game.

St. Norbert scores four in second to down Stout

GREEN BAY (December 7, 2007) - St. Norbert scored three goals over a four minute time span and four goals in the second period as the Green Knights defeated UW-Stout, 7-1, in a battle of NCHA heavyweights Friday at Cornerstone Community Center.

St. Norbert (8-1-1, 4-0-1) added three goals in the third, and Stout (10-2-1, 3-2-0) got their only goal of the game when Joel Gaulrapp (So, Owatonna, Minn) scored midway through the final stanza.

Starting six minutes into the second period with no score, the Green Knights' Matt Boyd, Brad Herman and Steve Sleep scored in just over four minutes. Six minutes later, the fog horn sounded again as Ryan Petersen closed out the second period scoring.

The Knights scored twice in the third before Gaulrapp scored, but Marc Belanger scored his second goal of the period to wrap up the scoring on the evening. St. Norbert outshot the Blue Devils, 33-14. The loss was Stout's most lopsided loss since a 9-0 loss to St. Scholastica on Feb. 4, 2006.

Stout will be at Lake Forest College, Saturday, Dec. 8 at 3 p.m.

Sternberg goal lifts Stout over Blugolds

EAU CLAIRE (December 1, 2007) - Andy Sternberg (So, Duluth, Minn) scored the game winning goal with 29 seconds remaining in the game to lift UW-Stout to a 2-1 win at UW-Eau Claire Saturday at Hobbs Ice Arena.

Danny Ryan, Jr. (Fr, Niles, Ill) dug the puck out of the corner and fed it to Sternberg who tickled the net and gave the Blue Devils (10-1-1, 3-1-0) a come-from-behind win.

The Blugolds (4-5-0, 1-3-0) opened the scoring when Jesse Vesel scored on a power play in the first period. Derek Hanson (So, Bemidji, Minn) got the equalizer on the power play for the Blue Devils 29 seconds into the third period. Jack Wolgemuth (Jr, Anchorage, Alaska), who also assisted on the game-winning-goal, got an assist on Hanson's goal, along with Joel Gaulrapp (So, Owatonna, Minn).

Matt Koenig (Jr, Lakeland, Minn) picked up up his 10th win of the season by making 33 saves. Tyler Brigl had 34 saves for the Blugolds.

Stout will be at St. Norbert College, Friday, Dec. 7 and at Lake Forest College, Saturday, Dec. 8.

Blue Devils double up Stevens Point

MENOMONIE (November 30, 2007) - Joel Gaulrapp (So, Owatonna, Minn) scored two power play goals and UW-Stout doubled up on UW-Stevens Point, 6-3, Friday at the Dunn County Ice Arena in a physical battle.

Each team scored at least one goal in each period and the teams tallied 25 penalties apiece. The Blue Devils (9-1-1, 2-1-0) were 4-for-8 on the power play, while the Pointers (5-3-0, 1-2-0) were 2-for-8.

Gaulrapp scored what would prove to be the game-winning goal, getting the power play goal six minutes into the second period, on assists by Jack Wolgemuth (Jr, Anchorage, Alaska) and David Larson (Fr, Warroad, Minn). Gaulrapp also scored the final goal of the game, coming with six minutes left in the game.

Stevens Point got on the board first when Tim Manthey scored on a - what else? - power play goal only four minutes into the game, lifting the shot over Stout goalie Matt Koenig's (Jr, Lakeland, Minn) left shoulder.

The Blue Devils tied the score only a bit more than a minute later on Nick Klaren's (Jr, North St. Paul, Minn) power play goal. Stout jumped out to a 2-1 lead when Jake Erickson (Sr, Rochester, Minn) got his first goal of the season, a shorthanded goal with six minutes remaining in the first period. Stout took a 3-1 lead a minute before the first break when Danny Ryan (Fr, Niles, Ill) scored, again on a power play.

Gaulrapp put Stout up 4-1 early in the second, but the Pointers' Manthey picked up his second goal of the night at the 14 minute mark. Stout's Scott Motz (So, Lake Elmo, Minn) scored only 30 seconds later.

The Pointers picked up their third goal of the night, this time midway through the third period on a Sean Fish power play goal. Gaulrapp ended the scoring with about five minutes remaining.

Koenig finished the night with 37 saves, while Stevens Point's Marcus Paulson had 32 saves.

Stout will be at UW-Eau Claire, Saturday, Dec. 1 at 7:30 p.m.

Joel Gaulrapp repeats honors in both leagues

Joel GaulrappMENOMONIE (November 26, 2007) - UW-Stout forward Joel Gaulrapp (So, Owatonna, Minn) scored two goals in the third period to give the Blue Devils a tie with St. Thomas last week. Gaulrapp was named the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) and the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) player of the week for the second time this season.

Trailing 3-1 at the start of the third period, Gaulrapp scored two goals in the period to give Stout a 3-3 tie at No. 10-ranked St. Thomas on Nov. 20.  He scored five minutes into the period to pull the Blue Devils within one goal, then tied the score with 54 seconds remaining in regulation.

Gaulrapp currently ranks in the top five in the NCHA in goals (9, 3rd), assists (8, 5th), points (17, 2nd) and power play goals (4, 2nd).

Late Gaulrapp goal gives Stout tie with Tommies

ST. PAUL, Minn (November 20, 2007) - Joel Gaulrapp (So, Owatonna, Minn) scored with 54 seconds remaining in regulation to give UW-Stout a tie at St. Thomas Tuesday.

The Blue Devils, which played comeback all night, saw Gaulrapp score just moments after Stout pulled their goalie to force overtime.

The goal was Gaulrapp's second of the evening. His first goal came at 5:29 of the third period to cut into a 3-1 St. Thomas lead.

The Tommies (5-1-1) jumped out front early with a first period power play goal by Adam Davis with four minutes left in the period.

Stout tied the score in the second period when Jeff Wheeler (Jr, Bainbridge, Wash) scored a power play goal midway through the second period.

The Tommies began to exert control in the third period when Nick Pernula and Alex Coles scored within a minute of each other early in the period.

Gaulrapp got his first goal of the night at 5:29 of the third with an assist by Derek Hanson (So, Bemidji, Minn). Hanson set up Gaulrapp again on the game tying goal.

Stout's Matt Koenig (Jr, Lakeland, Minn) made 36 saves on the night, while the Tommies' Tyler Chestnut made 22.

Stout will host UW-Stevens Point, Friday, Nov. 30 at 7:30 p.m. in a contest that will be available on Charter On-Demand.

Stout downs St. Scholastica in a wild one

DULUTH, Minn (November 17, 2007) - UW-Stout fell behind early, picked themselves up in the second period then rode out a 6-5 win at St. Scholastica Saturday.

The Saints jumped out to a 2-0 first period lead, but Stout (8-1-0, 1-1-0) came back with four second period goals to take a 4-2 lead before holding off the home team in the third period.

Derek Hanson (So, Bemidji, Minn) cut the lead in half for Stout, scoring only a minute into the second period. Danny Ryan (Fr, Niles, Ill) knotted the score at 2 apiece two minutes later on a power play. Jack Wolgemuth (Jr, Anchorage, Alaska) scored the final two goals of the period, both power play goals, one in the 16th minute and another in the 19th minute to give Stout a 4-2 lead.

The Saints (2-4-1, 0-2-0) pulled to within a goal when AJ Tucker scored his second goal of the evening, with this one coming two minutes into the third period.

The teams traded goals the rest of the way out. Jeff DeFrancesca (Sr, Mt. Prospect, Ill) scored at 6:07, but the Saints' Trevor Geiger scored two minutes later to make the score 5-4.

Jeff Wheeler (Jr, Bainbridge, Wash) got what would prove to be the game winner with four minutes remaining in the game. The Saints got the final goal of the night after pulling their goalie with 34 seconds remaining.

Matt Koenig (Jr, Lakeland, Minn) made 32 saves to record his eighth win of the season. Tyler Johnson had 24 saves for the Saints.

Stout will be at St. Thomas, Tuesday, Nov. 20.

Superior gets only goal in OT, down Blue Devils

MENOMONIE (November 15, 2007) - UW-Superior's Logan Isley scored the game-winning goal with 2-minutes, 21-seconds remaining in overtime to hand UW-Stout their first defeat of the season, 1-0, at the Dunn County Ice Arena Thursday.

Isley took a back door pass from Eric Bausano and lifted the shot over the right shoulder of Blue Devil goalie Matt Koenig (Jr, Lakeland, Minn) in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) opener.

The Yellowjackets (2-1-3, 1-0-0) were playing in Stout's (7-1-0, 0-1-0) back yard all evening and outshot the Blue Devils, 40-27.

Koenig made several acrobatic saves throughout the evening, stopping 39 shots. But his Superior counterpart, Chad Beiswenger matched Koenig's performance with 27 saves, including a hard, high shot by Robert Carr (Fr, Roseau, Minn), that Beiswenger put a glove on and sent it sailing higher.

Stout will be at St. Scholastica, Saturday, Nov. 17 and will be at St. Thomas, Tuesday, Nov. 20.

Blue Devils come from behind to down Gustavus

ST. PETER , Minn (November 10, 2007) - Paul Henderson (So, Menomonie) scored the game-winning goal in the third period to lift UW-Stout to a come-from-behind win over Gustavus Adolphus Saturday.

The Gusties (2-2-0) took a 2-0 lead after a period when David Martinson scored a shorthanded goal at 13:01 in the first period and Eric Bigham scored with a minute left in the period.

But sixth ranked Stout (7-0-0) knotted the score with two goals in the second period. Derek Hanson (So, Bemidji, Minn) scored his 10th goal of the season at 3:46 of the period and Jake Gullickson (So, Apple Valley, Minn) scored at the 12:50 mark to knot the score.

Henderson wasted little time after the second intermission, scoring unassisted only two minutes into the final stanza.

Matt Koenig (Jr, Lakeland, Minn) recorded his seventh win of the season, turning away 26 shots in one of the few games this year Stout has been outshot. The Gusties' Josh Swartout recorded 18 saves.

The seven consecutive wins is Stout's best start in school history. Last season, after seven games, Stout was 6-0-1, with the lone tie coming to Gustavus Adolphus.

Stout will host UW-Superior, Thursday, Nov. 15 at 7:30 p.m. at the Dunn County Ice Arena as the two teams open NCHA action.

Blue Devils hold off St. Olaf in Buffalo, Minn

BUFFALO, Minn (November 9, 2007) - UW-Stout's Derek Hanson (So, Bemidji, Minn) scored two goals in the final 21 minutes of play, but the Blue Devils needed an empty net goal by Jack Wolgemuth (Jr, Anchorage, Alaska) with less than a minute left to take the drama out of the game as Stout took a 6-4 win over Olaf College, Friday at the Buffalo Civic Center.

Stout (6-0-0) took advantage of a power play opportunity just before the end of the second period when Hanson took a pass from Wolgemuth and Bobby Kuehl (So, St. Paul, Minn) to put Stout back up by two goals, 4-2, at the second break.

St. Olaf (1-2-0) came back all night and pulled to one goal in the third period when Nick Stalock scored just as Stout came out of the penalty box. Hanson gave Stout a two-goal cushion with four minutes left in the game, on an assist by Gaulrapp, but St. Olaf came back to within one goal when Stalock scored his second goal of the period to pull to within 5-4.

Wolgemuth unloaded a shot from the blue line just after the Oles pulled their goalie for the final score with 40 seconds remaining in the contest and a 6-4 win.

The Blue Devils jumped out in front first, scoring twice in the first period. Stout shook off two early penalties, and gained the momentum when Scott Sikkink (Sr, Chippewa Falls) scored his first goal of the season with six minutes left in the first. Nick Klaren (Jr, North St. Paul, Minn) scored just a minute later to give Stout a 2-0 lead heading into intermission.

Joel Gaulrapp (So, Owatonna, Minn) scored on a breakaway about halfway through the second period to push Stout up, 3-0. The Oles answered back minutes later when Brent Kistner scored, then pulled to within one goal when Dylan Mueller picked up the loose change for the score.

Hanson gave Stout a 4-2 lead at the end of the second, leading to the fireworks in the third.

Stout's Matt Koenig (Jr, Lakeland, Minn) recorded 22 saves on the night to pick up his sixth win of the season. Jake Busch had 31 saves for the Oles.

Stout will be at Gustavus Adolphus, Saturday, Nov. 10, then return home to host UW-Superior, Thursday, Nov. 15 in the NCHA opener at 7:30 p.m.

 

Blue Devils jump to No. 6 in latest poll

MENOMONIE (November 6, 2007) - Off on the best start in school history, the UW-Stout hockey team jumped up six places in the latest USCHO.com / CSTV Division III men's ice hockey poll.

The Blue Devils (5-0-0) were ranked 12th in the first poll of the season, and have jumped up to sixth after outscoring their first five opponents 35-10.

Stout will host St. Olaf College, Friday, Nov. 9 at the Buffalo Civic Center in Buffalo, Minn, at 7 p.m., then will be at Gustavus Adolphus, Saturday, Nov. 10. Stout will open the NCHA season, Thursday, Nov. 15 when they host UW-Superior at 7:30 p.m.

Carr scores with 12 seconds left to lift Stout

MENOMONIE (November 3, 2007) - For the first time this season, UW-Stout had to rally and the Blue Devils did it in dramatic fashion as they defeated Augsburg College, 3-2, on a goal by Robert Carr (Fr, Roseau, Minn) with 12 seconds remaining in the game.

Trailing for the first time this season after Augsburg (0-2-0) scored two goals in the final five minutes of the second period, the Blue Devils' Derek Hanson (So, Bemidji, Minn) redirected a shot from Joel Gaulrapp (So, Owatonna, Minn) from the circle to knot the score, 2-2, nine minutes into the final stanza.

The Blue Devils (5-0-0) remained undefeated on the year when Augsburg goalie Adam Hendel came out of the net to poke check the puck, leaving the wide open shot for Carr.

Stout got on the board first when Hanson scored his first goal of the game, a power play goal, at 10:30 of the first period. The Auggies tied the score when Danny Carlson scored a power play goal with five minutes remaining in the second period, then went ahead when Carlson scored four minutes later.

Matt Koenig (Jr, Lakeland, Minn) got the win, making 22 saves, while Hendel took the loss with 30 saves.

Stout will host St. Olaf College, Friday, Nov. 9 in Buffalo, Minn, then will be at Gustavus Adolphus College, Saturday, Nov. 10.

Big second period pushes Stout past Hamline

MENOMONIE (November 2, 2007) - The UW-Stout offensive machine continued as the Blue Devils rode a six goal second period to a 7-1 win over Hamline University Friday at the Dunn County Ice Arena.

The Blue Devils (4-0-0) scored three power play goals - two by Derek Hanson (So, Bemidji, Minn) - and a shorthanded goal among their six second stanza markers.

Hanson got things started in the second as the Blue Devils took advantage of a rough-and-tumble just as the first period ended. Five players sat in the box due to the scrum, but three of them were from Hamline and the Blue Devils took advantage as Hanson scored 56 seconds into the period. Less than two minutes later, Hanson got his second power play goal of the evening.

Andy Sternberg (So, Duluth, Minn) scored at 5:53 and Jeff Wheeler (Jr, Bainbridge, Wash) scored the third power play goal of the period less than two minutes later. Robert Carr (Fr, Roseau, Minn) scored a shorthanded goal midway through the period and Joel Gaulrapp (So, Owatonna, Minn) scored just before the buzzer as Stout took a 6-0 lead into the locker room.

The Pipers (0-1-0) got onto the scoreboard just short of eight minutes into the third period, but Stout neutralized that four minutes later when Wheeler got this second goal of the game.

Matt Koenig (Jr, Lakeville, Minn) took the win, playing nearly 53 minutes before giving way to Jesse Pischlar (Fr, Sudbury, Ont). Koenig turned away 22 shots and gave up the goal, while Pischler recorded four saves.

Stout put 19 shots on goal in the second period and outshot the Pipers, 32-27 for the game. Kyle Russell took the loss for Hamline, turning back 19 shots, but was on the ice for six goals. Zachary Faust worked the last period and had six saves.

In addition to his two goals, Wheeler tallied two assists, as did Jack Wolgemuth (Jr, Anchorage, Alaska). Thirteen different Blue Devils tallied points.

Stout will host Augsburg, Saturday, Nov. 3 at 7:30 p.m.

Blue Devils roll past Concordia

MENOMONIE (October 30, 2007) - Eight different UW-Stout player scored goals as the Blue Devils defeated Concordia-Wisconsin, 10-1, Tuesday at the Dunn County Ice Arena.

Jeff Wheeler (Jr, Bainbridge, Wash) and Derek Hanson (So, Bemidji, Minn) each scored two goals, with Hanson scoring both of his goals in a four-goal first period. Wheeler scored the game's first goal, that coming five minutes into the game, then added his second in the middle of the second period.

Stout (3-0-0) took a 4-0 lead after the first period, a 6-1 lead after the second and added four goals in the third as the Blue Devils outshot Concordia, 56-20.

Joel Gaulrapp (So, Owatonna, Minn) scored his fifth goal of the season in the first period. Robert Carr (Fr, Roseau, Minn) added a short handed goal in the second period. Andy Sternberg (So, Duluth, Minn), Rob Mueller (Jr, Buffalo, Minn), Nick Klaren (Jr, North St. Paul, Minn) and Scott Motz (So, Lake Elmo, Minn) each scored in the third period.

The Falcons (0-1-0), playing their first game as a varsity program, got the first goal of their program's history five minutes into the second period by Justin Maciuk.

Stout took advantage of their power play opportunities, scoring on 4-of-9 chances. The 10 goals was the most goals Stout has scored in a game since Jan. 30, 1998, when they defeated St. Scholastica, 11-3.

Matt Koenig (Jr, Lakeville, Minn) took the win, his third of the season, working the first period and turning back four shots. Jesse Pischlar (Fr, Sudbury, Ont) worked the final periods, recording 15 saves.

Stout will host Hamline University, Friday, Nov. 2 and Augsburg College, Satuday, Nov. 3. Both games will be at 7:30 p.m.

Joel Gaulrapp earns honors in both leagues

Joel GaulrappMENOMONIE (October 30, 2007) - UW-Stout forward Joel Gaulrapp (So, Owatonna, Minn) scored four goals and an assist as the Blue Devils defeated Northland College and Marian College last weekend and was named the NCHA player of the week.

Gaulrapp scored Stout's third goal of the game as the Blue Devils took advantage of a five-minute major power play opportunity in a 9-1 win over Northland College, Oct. 26. Gaulrapp added a goal in the third period and also chipped in an assist.

In a 6-5 win over Marian College, Gaulrapp scored two first period power play goals. Gaulrapp had three power play goals on the weekend.

FOND DU LAC (October 27, 2007) - One night after dominating Northland College, UW-Stout needed a late goal to squeak out a 6-5 win over Marian College Saturday.

Freshman David Larson (Warroad, Minn) scored the game winner unassisted with less than four minutes left in regulation to give Stout (2-0-0) the win.

The game, and the first period in particular, was a wild, offensive show. Stout took a 4-3 lead into the first intermission as Joel Gaulrapp (Fr, Owatonna, Minn) scored two goals within five minutes of each other in the period. Gaulrapp's second goal gave Stout a 3-1 lead midway through the opening period, but the Sabre (0-1-0) came back with two of their own to knot the score. Derek Hanson's (So, Bemidji, Minn) goal with three minutes left in the period gave Stout the 4-3 lead.

Stout never trailed in the game, but they certainly could not put the Sabres away. Demitry Sentsov tied the score for Marian on a power play four minutes into the second, but Stout took a 5-4 lead on Jared Britton's (Fr, Regina, Sask) first collegiate goal at the 15:07 mark of the second period. But Marian answered back on a goal by Nick Cinquegrani with less than a minute left in the stanza to tie at 5-5.

Mike Stone (Sr, West St. Paul, Minn) made the start for the Blue Devils in goal, but gave up four goals and gave way to Matt Koenig (Jr, Lakeland, Minn) midway through the second period. Stone finished with 11 saves, while Koenig turned back 18. The Sabres' Cullen Caldwell had 33 saves and absorbed the loss.

Stout will host Concordia-Wisconsin, Tuesday, Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. in the Falcons' first ever varsity contest. The Blue Devils will host Hamline University, Friday, Nov. 2 at 7:30 p.m. and Augsburg College, Saturday, Nov. 3 at 7:30 p.m.

Second period offensive burst keys win

MENOMONIE (October 26, 2007) - UW-Stout jumped all over Northland College for five goals in the second period to take a 9-1 win over the Lumberjacks in the season opener for both teams Friday.

The Blue Devils took advantage of a five minute major for checking from behind by Northland to score three power play goals within three minutes during the long power play opportunity.

While the Blue Devils controlled the zone in the first period, putting 16 shots on goal in the period, they managed only one goal, that coming with four minutes left in the period when Robert Carr (Fr, Roseau, Minn) scored his first collegiate goal, with an assist by Luke Schroeder (Sr, Minneapolis, Minn).

The Lumberjacks evened the score only 14 seconds into the second period when Tony Huberty lifted a shot past Matt Koenig (Jr, Lakeland, Minn). Northland, which went winless last season, was thinking upset against the 12th ranked Blue Devils.

But Jeff Wheeler (Jr, Bainbridge, Wash) quashed those hopes as he scored his first of two goals on the night at 5:46. The Lumberjacks' Matt Tanneberg was called for what would prove to be a very costly penalty.

Joel Gaulrapp (So, Owatonna, Minn) opened the scoring at 9:16, followed by Wheeler's second goal a minute later. Scott Motz (So, Lake Elmo, Minn) completed the trifecta less than two minutes later and Stout found themselves up 5-1. Schroeder added a short handed goal at 17:28.

The Blue Devils added three more goals in the final stanza. Gaulrapp picked up his second goal of the evening midway through the period. Paul Henderson (So, Menomonie) scored at 15:12 and Andy Sternberg (So, Duluth, Minn) finished off the scoring 28 seconds later. Wheeler was credited with assists on Henderson's and Sternberg's goals.

Stout outshot the Lumberjacks, 53-14. Koenig had 11 saves, and gave way to Glenn Walker (Sr, Verona), who turned back two third period shots..

Stout will be at Marian College, Saturday, Oct. 27, then return home to host Concordia University-Wisconsin, Tuesday, Oct. 30 at 7 p.m.

Blue Devils to open 2007-08 season Friday

MENOMONIE (October 21, 2007) - UW-Stout will drop the puck on the 2007-08 season Friday, Oct. 26 when they host Northland College at 7:30 p.m. at the Dunn County Ice Arena. The Blue Devils will travel to Fond du Lac, Saturday, Oct. 27, to take on Marian College in a 7 p.m. contest. The Blue Devils then return home for a Tuesday, Oct. 30 match-up with Concordia University of Mequon in a 7 p.m. contest.

UW-STOUT BLUE DEVILS: UW-Stout returns four of their top five scorers, plus All-American goalie Mike Stone (Sr, West St. Paul, Minn), from a team that finished 21-5-2, the best overall record in school history, and 10-3-1 in NCHA play to claim a share of the conference title for the first time ever. Stout comes into the season ranked 12th in the first USCHO.com Division III poll and is picked to finish third in the NCHA. Scott Motz (So, Lake Elmo, Minn) returns as the Blue Devils' leading scorer (18 goals, 18 assists, 36 points). Derek Hanson (So, Bemidji, Minn) 12-16-28, Jake Erickson (Sr, Rochester, Minn) 7-11-18, and Luke Schroeder (Sr, Minneapolis, Minn) 6-12-18, round out the Blue Devils' top remaining scorers. Stone was 15-5-1 last season with a goals against average of 2.11 and a save percentage of .927.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT: Northland College: The Lumberjacks will be seeking their first win since Feb. 17, 2006, after going 0-26-1 last year. Northland's only non-loss last year was a 1-1 tie with UM-Crookston, the same school they last beat. Northland had two overtime games last year, both against Crookston on back-to-back nights. The Lumberjacks were outscored last year, 159-35, and were shutout eight times. Marian College: The Sabres return 18 players from last years' squad, and will bring in 10 newcomers. All-MCHA selections junior forward James Goodfellow and sophomore goalie Cullen Caldwell return to anchor the team. Caldwell had a 2.45 GAA last year, ranking him 12th in the NCAA Division III. Marian finsihed third in their league last year and lost in the consolation game of the conference tournament to Lawrence University. The Sabres were 14-12-3 last season. Concordia University: The Falcons not only open their first ever hockey varsity season this year, they will be dropping the puck for real for the first time when they face-off at the Dunn County Ice Arena. The Falcons added both men's and women's ice hockey this season. Former NHL player Tony Hrkac will coach the Falcon men, who will play in the MCHA.

JUST THE STATS: Northland: The Lumberjacks returns two senior forwards in Mike Stevens and Ryan Hunt. Sophomore Josh Spiegel returns as the Lumberjack with the most goals last year, tallying four. Bo Storozuk saw the majority of time between the pipes, with a goals against average of 5.57 and a save percentage of .890. He turned away 1091 shots on goal. Marian: Forward James Goodfellow was the Sabres leading scorer, putting in 17 goals and 18 assists. Nick Cinquegrani had 14 goals and 15 assists, while Carl Bresser had 15 goals and 11 assists. Goalie Cullen Caldwell posted a record of 9-5-2 with a 2.45 GAA and a .915 save percentage. Concordia: The Falcons are waiting to put up their first stats.

THE COACHES: Terry Watkins (122-162-15) begins his 11th season as the head coach of the Blue Devils varsity program. Watkins spent eight years coaching the club team (104-102-16) as Stout prepared to return to varsity status in 1997. Watkins was the 2006-07 NCHA coach of the year. Watkins had a Hall of Fame career at Stout as a defenseman. Steve Fabilli (3-49-1) begins his third year as the coach of the Northland Lumberjacks. Fabilli was a four-year letterwinning goalie at Canisius College. Jasen Wise (37-42-6) enters his fourth season as the head coach of the Marian Sabres. A graduate of St. Thomas, Wise was a team captain when the Tommies won the MIAC title his junior year. He was an assistant coach at Hamline University for five years before coming to Marian. Tony Hrkac (0-0-0) begins his first year as the coach at Concordia Wisconsin. Hrkac had an 18 year professional career including stints with the Anaheim Mighty Ducks, Atlanta Thrashers, Chicago Black Hawks, Dallas Stars, Edmonton Oilers, New York Islanders, Quebec Nordiques, San Jose Sharks, and St. Louis Blues. Hrkac won a Stanley Cup championship with Dallas in 1999. In college, Hrkac was awarded the Hobey Baker Award as the NCAA's top Division I performer when his University of North Dakota team won the NCAA Division I title in 1987.

THE SERIES: There is no record that Stout has ever met Northland College as varsity programs. This is Concordia's first year as a varsity program. Stout holds a 2-1-0 lead over Marian College.

LAST TIME THEY MET: Stout has not played Marian College since the season opener of the 2004-05 season when the Blue Devils took a 6-4 home win. Current Blue Devils Todd Wynia and Scott Sikkink each scored a goal.

THE CONFERENCES: UW-Stout is a member of the eight-time Northern College Hockey Association (NCHA) and the five team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). The WIAC is made up of Stout, UW-Eau Claire, UW-Stevens Point, UW-Superior and UW-River Falls. The NCHA includes the five WIAC schools as well as St.Norbert, St. Scholastica and Lake Forest. The NCHA also has a seven-member women's league. Northland, Marian and Concordia are all members of the nine-team Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association (MCHA).

UP NEXT: Stout will host Hamline University Friday, Nov. 2 and Augsburg College, Saturday, Nov. 3. Both games are at 7:30 p.m. In Stout's first five games, they have four home games. In their remaining nine first semester games, seven are on the road, including a Stout "home" game, Friday, Nov. 9 against St. Olaf at Buffalo, Minn.

Coming off their best season in school history with a 21-5-2 overall record and a share of the NCHA title, the Blue Devils will drop the puck on the 2007-08 season Friday, Oct. 26 when they host Northland College at the Dunn County Ice Arena at 7:30 p.m.

St. Norbert received four first place votes and was picked first. UW-River Falls received one first place vote and finished second in the poll. St. Scholastica received two first place votes and finished fourth.

The Blue Devils tied with UW-River Falls and St. Norbert College last season for their first-ever Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) title, finishing the year with a best-ever 21-5-2 overall record and a 10-3-1 conference mark.

The Blue Devils will be led by All-American goalie Mike Stone (Sr, West St. Paul, Minn). Stone finished the season with a 15-5-1 overall record and a goals against average of 2.11.

Watkins earns coaching honors

MENOMONIE (April 16, 2007) - After leading his program to a best-ever 21-5-2 overall record and a first-ever NCHA title, UW-Stout head coach Terry Watkins was named the runner-up for the prestigious Edward Jeremiah Award, which recognizes the top coaches in NCAA Division III men's hockey.

Watkins just completed his 11th year as the varsity coach of the Blue Devil program. The Blue Devils were a top 10 ranked team for most of the season as they recorded the best record in school history and compiled a 10-3-1 record in the NCHA.

The Blue Devils recorded the most wins in school history, as well as the highest winning percentage in school history (.786), longest winning streak (12) and longest undefeated streak (14).

The NCHA coach of the year, Watkins had seven players named to the all-NCHA team and seven players named to the all-WIAC team. Nine Blue Devil players were named to the NCHA All-Academic team as the Blue Devils posted a cumulative 3.2 grade point average. Goalie Mike Stone was a second team All-American and four other players earned national awards.

Under Watkins' direction, the Blue Devil hockey team made a $5000 contribution to the Area Youth Hockey Association, which was generated by conducting a fall clinic for area yout. The UW-Stout Alumni Association also recognized the Stout team for their interaction with handicapped citizens.

Ed Gosek, who led his Oswego State to the school's first NCAA Division III men's title, was the recipient of the award. College hockey's Coach of the Year recipients are chosen by members of the American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA). Winners will receive their awards at the annual AHCA Coach of the Year banquet, held in conjunctin with the AHCA Convention in Naples, Fla. This year's awards banquet is scheduled for Saturday, April 28.

Four players, plus coach, receive 2007 All-USCHO awards

MENOMONIE (March 29, 2007) - Four players, plus coach Terry Watkins, recently received national awards by landing on the 2007 All-USCHO D-III teams.

Watkins, after leading UW-Stout to a best-ever 21-5-2 overall record and a first-ever NCHA title, was the honorable mention D-III coach of the year.

Goalie Mike Stone (Jr, West St. Paul, Minn/Henry Sibley) was picked to the West Region second team. Defenseman Jack Wolgemuth (So, Anchorage, Alaska/Dimond) was an honorable mention pick to the team.

Freshman defenseman Bobby Kuehl (St. Paul, Minn/Johnson) and freshman forward Scott Motz (Lake Elmo, Minn/Tartan), the team's leading scorer with 18 goals and 18 assists, were named to the West Rookie team.

Goalie Mike Stone earns All-America honors

SUPERIOR (March 17, 2007) - After leading the UW-Stout hockey team to their best-ever finish, goalie Mike Stone (Jr, West St. Paul, Minn) was a West Region, second team pick to the RBK Hockey Division III Men's All-American team, selected by the American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA). The team is split into West and East regions.

Stone, who put together a school record 15-5-1 overall record, led the Blue Devils to a 21-5-2 overall record and their first-ever Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) title as Stout finished 10-3-1 in league play. Stone posted a 2.11 goals against average (GAA), recording 517 saves with a save percentage of .927.

Stone, a first team all-NCHA and all-WIAC selection and NCHA player of the year finalist, finished sixth nationally in GAA, third nationally in save percentage and 10th in winning percentage (.728). Stone is the second Blue Devil to be named to the team. Goalie Jeff Dotson was selected in the 2004 season.

Seven players from the NCHA were placed on the team. Six of the players were from WIAC schools. The RBK Hockey All-American Teams are sponsored by the RBK Hockey, a leader in hockey equipment, and chosen by members of the AHCA.
