MINNEAPOLIS, Minn (March 6, 2008) - UW-Stout's leadoff hitter, Mike White (Sr, Rochester, Minn) set the tone for the Blue Devils in his first at-bat as Stout defeated UM-Crookston, 7-3, 13-5, in the Blue Devils' season opener Thursday at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome.
White ripped the first pitch he saw to deep right-center field, racking up a double. White, number two batter Eric Paul (Sr, Wisconsin Rapids) and number nine batter Andy Lorenzen (Jr, Menomonie) would have a field day. White reached base on his first seven plate appearances and went 5-for-8 on the day with three RBI, including an in the park homerun to centerfield in the opener.

Titans eliminate Blue Devils from tournament
Also online:
WISCONSIN RAPIDS (May 12, 2007) - As they have throughout their first WIAC tournament appearance since 1999, UW-Stout came out and took an early lead in their third round game with UW-Oshkosh. But this time the Blue Devils couldn't hold off their opponent as the Titans ended Stout's season with an 11-2 decision Saturday at Witter Field.
Erik Johnson (Jr, La Crosse) put Stout (23-19) on the board first in the opening inning, driving in Tim Schneider (Jr, West Salem) with a single up the middle. The Titans (32-9) tied the score in the bottom of the inning on a Bryan Schwebke home run, but the Blue Devils took the lead right back in the second inning on Ryan Stace's (So, Oregon) home run to center field.
That would be about it for Stout, which surrendered three runs in the second, two in the third, one in the fourth and four in the seventh. Stout stranded runners in the fifth, sixth, eighth and ninth, but none got past second base.
Stout committed three errors while the Titans outhit the Blue Devils, 11-8. Derek Leighton and Mike Waupoose hit back-to-back home runs in the seventh inning for the top seeded Titans, who had to come back through the loser's bracket after the Blue Devils dropped them, 9-7, in the opening game.
Chad Tousley (Sr, Prescott) was saddled with the loss, giving up four earned runs. Ben Sivertson (Jr, Elk Mound) worked four-plus innings of relief, striking out six, but also gave up four earned runs.
No Stout player collected more than one hit. Seth Maier (Sr, Park Falls) wrapped up a stellar career, getting one hit in four trips to the plate. Maier finishes his career as the Blue Devils' career leader in hits, at-bats and doubles, and came up just two RBI short of that record.
Stout will return starters at catcher, shortstop, third base and the entire outfield, as well as the designated hitter. The Blue Devils lose three of their four regular starters in the pitching rotation, but graduate no pitchers from the bullpen. Stout's 23 wins is their most since the 1997 season when the team went 25-8.
Oshkosh will play UW-Stevens Point in the championship game. The Titans will have to win twice to claim the WIAC tournament crown and the NCAA automatic bid.
Pointers come from behind to knock off Blue Devils
Also online:
WISCONSIN RAPIDS (May 11, 2007) - UW-Stevens Point scored three runs in the eighth inning to take a 7-5 win over UW-Stout in the WIAC Baseball Tournament late Friday at Witter Field.
After Stout (23-18) built a 5-1 lead through the fifth inning, the Pointers (27-14) chipped away the rest of the night to work their way into the championship game. Stout will play UW-Oshkosh, Saturday, May 12 at noon in an elimination game. The winner will advance to the championship game with the Pointers at 3 p.m.
Stevens Point pounded out four hits - three of them doubles - in the eighth inning to score the three runs that put them in the lead for good. Stout got a runner as far as third base in the eighth, but was picked off. The Blue Devils went down in order in the ninth.
The Blue Devils got the scoring started in the first inning when Seth Maier (Sr, Park Falls) drove in Tim Schneider (Jr, West Salem), who led off the inning with a double down the left field line, with a single up the middle. The Pointers answered back in their next at-bat when Tim Schlosser drove in a run.
Erik Johnson (Jr, La Crosse), who was the hero in the opener with a 10th inning RBI single against UW-Oshkosh, gave the Blue Devils a two run cushion with a two-run home run to right field.
Stout took advantage of a number of Stevens Point miscues in the fourth inning. Matt Krause (Jr, Bonduel) was hit by a pitch, then worked his way to third when a pickoff attempt went errant. Krause then scored on a wild pitch and Stout had a 4-1 lead.
Again, Stout made Stevens Point pay due to mistakes, this time in the fifth inning when Greg Smolinski (Fr, Menasha) reached on an error at third base and Eric Paul (Jr, Wisconsin Rapids) scored from second base.
The Pointers chased Stout starter Dan Olson (Sr, Eau Claire) in the sixth inning. After getting a lead off strikeout, Olson, who had recorded 11 strikeouts up to that point, walked the next batter, then allowed three consecutive singles. Olson was replaced by Matt Doornink (So, Cottage Grove, Minn), who unleashed a wild pitch, allowing Joel Hojnacki to score. Doornink settled down to get the final two outs.
The Pointers pulled to within a run, 5-4, in the seventh inning when Hojnacki drove in a run on a fielder's choice.
Olson was unsuccessful in getting his first win of the season. and did not figure into the decision. Doornink was tagged with the loss, giving up four earned runs. Matt Mehne threw three innings, allowing two hits, but no runs and picked up the win.
Maier was 3-for-4 for the Blue Devils, while Schneider was 2-for-5. The Pointers got two hits apiece from Hojnacki, Schlosser, Brad Archambeau, Brandon Scheidler and Jordan Zimmermann. Stevens Point scored 12 hits to nine for Stout.

WISCONSIN RAPIDS (May 11, 2007) - Erik Johnson (Jr, La Crosse) hit a two-out one run single to left field in the top of the 10th to take a 9-7 win over UW-Oshkosh in the opening game of the WIAC Baseball Tournament Friday at Witter Field.
Stout will play UW-Stevens Point at 7 p.m. Friday. The Pointers edged past UW-Whitewater, 5-4, in the second game of the day. Oshkosh and Whitewater will play at approximately 4 p.m.
The Blue Devils (23-17) had built a 7-0 lead after two and and a half innings, but the top seeded Titans (30-9) completely turned the momentum around, scoring three in the third, two in the fourth, one in the fifth, then tied the game on a wild pitch in the bottom of the eighth.
Neither team could muster a run in the ninth, but Stout took advantage in the 10th.
With two outs, Eric Paul (Jr, Wisconsin Rapids), playing in his hometown, smashed a double to left center field. The Titans intentionally walked Seth Maier (Sr, Park Falls) to put runners on first and second to get to Johnson, Stout's RBI leader.
Johnson lefted the ball to left field to drive in Paul, but Maier scored from first when the left fielder let the ball get past him. Johnson was gunned down trying to take third, but the momentum slipped back to Stout.
Matt Doornink (So, Cottage Grove, Minn), who had entered the game in the eighth inning, struck out the first batter, then made the put out at first as Luke Schultz (Sr, Menomonie) fielded the ball. Doornink walked the next batter, but Doornink forced the final batter to dribble a ball to Maier at first base, who flipped the ball to a covering Doornink, and Stout had their first ever WIAC Tournament win and Doornink went to 3-1 on the season.
Stout started like a house afire. Matt Krause (Jr, Bonduel) drove in Paul in the first inning for Stout's first run. Tim Schneider (Jr, West Salem) doubled the score with a rocket that caught the jet stream in center field.
The Blue Devils put five on the board in the third, four unearned, for a 7-0 lead. Greg Smolinski (Fr, Menasha), Krause, Schultz and Mike White (Jr, Rochester, Minn) each recorded RBI's in the inning.
The Titans came back in a hurry. Mike Waupoose hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the third, then added to their totals with two runs in the fourth as Bryan Schwebke scored two on a single to left field.
Oshkosh tacked on a solo run in the fifth to pull to within one run, 7-6, on an infield hit by Pete Berg.
The bottom almost fell out for Stout in the eighth. Schwebke opened the inning with a double. Doornink came on for a groundout as Schwebke moved to third. Doornink recorded a strikeout, but then threw the ball into the dirt and Schwebke scored. Another wild pitch almost came back to haunt Stout as Doornink recorded another strikeout, but the ball in the dirt got away from Krause. Waupoose singled the runner to third before Doornink forced a groundout.
Stout left two in the ninth, and Stout got out of a jam with their second double play of the game.
Schneider went 4-for-6 with two RBI. Krause was 2-for-5 with two RBI. Paul, Johnnson and Krause each had two hits. For the Titans, Schwebke was 3-for-6 with two RBI. Waupoose was 2-for-5 with three RBI. Stout outhit Oshkosh, 15-10, and each team had three errors.
