Alternative Spring Break - March 11-18, 2006

Buses are now filled....for the iCare Program in Hancock County, Mississippi from March 11-18, 2006. Student Support Services sponsored a number of our ASPIRE participants ($150/each) to make a difference in the lives of others. This $150 ASPIRE sponsorship includes your housing, meals and program fees for the 5 service days while at the village. It does not cover food for the bus rides, any adventures or spending money. What does the trip entail?
- 5 days of community service aiding those lives affected by Hurricane Katrina
- The raddest 22 hour bus drive you have ever experienced
- Getting to know 85 other Stout students spending their spring break serving others
- Community living in a volunteer village built for hurricane relief volunteers
- Rebuild with hurricane victims in the morning…that means playing with tools!
- Playing with young hurricane victims after school at various Boys and Girls clubs in the county
- This is an alcohol-free event

Volunteers will be placed on crews completing recovery projects in the communities of Waveland and Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, both of these communities received extensive damage. Volunteers will be asked to participate in diverse reconstruction and volunteer support activities including; debris removal, tree removal, construction, sheetrock hanging, painting, building repairs, floor installation, window installation, organizing donated items, preparing volunteer meals, data entry, warehouse work.

Volunteers will stay at the iCare Village in Waveland, Mississippi. The Village is located on the beach and consists of one main 10,000 square foot structure and many other smaller structures spread out across the site. The Village is a fully functional center, equipped with utilities such as electricity, water, sewer, and air conditioning.
Mandatory Orientation and Disaster Training
Orientation – Choice of three dates and times:
- Monday February 13th 7:00pm (Great Hall A)
- Tuesday February 14th 8:00am (Cedarwood Room)
- Friday February 17th 3:30pm (Cedarwood Room)
Disaster Relief Training: Sunday, March 5th at 6pm (plan on 2 hours) Ballrooms, Student Center.
Tentative Trip Itinerary
Saturday 3/11- Meet at Stout at 2pm, depart 3pm
Relax and enjoy the next 22 hours with multiple stops
Sunday 3/12 – Arrive at iCare Village 2pm
Monday 3/13 - Rebuild in the morning and play after school
Tuesday 3/14 - Rebuild in the morning and play after school
Wednesday 3/15 Rebuild in the morning and group adventure in the afternoon
Thursday 3/16 - Rebuild in the morning and play after school
Friday 3/17 – Rebuild in the morning and depart the village 2pm
Relax and enjoy the next 26 hours of adventure in Mississippi and the drive back home
Saturday 3/18 - Arrive Stout in evening
