Is The Chancellor's Coalition against drinking?

The Chancellor's Coalition on Alcohol and Drugs is not against the responsible, mature, and legal consumption of alcohol. However, Coalition members recognize that student alcohol and other drug (AOD) abuse has a negative impact on the campus and community environment. AOD abuse is associated with the majority of injuries, assaults and property damage. Consequently, the Coalition is focused on strategies, policies and programming for AOD abuse prevention.

What has the Coalition accomplished?

The Coalition has been instrumental in raising awareness of AOD abuse issues on campus and in the Menomonie community. Coalition members have worked to bring about change in the AOD use culture through policy, programming and public relations.

What is the structure of the Coalition?

The Coalition is made up of UW-Stout faculty, staff, administrators and students who represent various organizations, schools and offices on campus. Each year the Chancellor asks campus organizations to nominate a representative to the Coalition. Coalition members meet, as a group, once each month and members then report back to their constituents. Smaller ad hoc working groups are formed around various topics and meet on their own schedule.  Ad hoc group topics have included: AOD Policy and Intervention, Faculty Involvement, Coalition Publicity and AOD Programming review.

What happens during Coalition meetings?

Coalition meetings are primarily devoted to the exchange of subcommittee information and the discussion of issues and concerns. The Chairs of each subcommittee report on the activities of their respective groups and receive recommendations.

What role do students play in the Coalition?

UW-Stout students are essential to the work of the Coalition because they provide ideas, energy and valuable insights about student perceptions and beliefs.  While most students officially represent various campus organizations, others may choose to participate because they are interested in the issues.  Interested students are encouraged to become involved, especially in the working group activities.
