Estimator, Pulte Homes
B.S. Construction,  '06

I work as an estimator at Pulte Homes. I was introduced to construction at an early age by my grandpa, and became interested in the field after participating in mission trips to Mexico and Costa Rica.

My favorite part of the Construction program at UW-Stout was the “team” concept in class, accompanied by the real world examples. The hands on training and activities in class were very rewarding. A program where one is able to experience real projects and see the action is much more meaningful and will stay with you much longer!

The most challenging, yet the most exciting part of my program was balancing everything. If you want to challenge yourself you need to get involved. I was involved in the Student Construction Association, National Association for Home Builders, Sigma Lambda Chi (Construction Honors Society), volunteer organizations, Campus Crusade for Christ, Boxing, the International Club, and Intramural Volleyball. Additionally, I baked, rode bike, and salsa danced as time permitted. Balancing all of these activities along with my school work, student competitions, part-time jobs and job searching was a little tough at times, but I look back now and see that I learned so much from each!

Stout gave me the confidence to pursue any position out there. It allowed me to push myself through a great construction management program. It also allowed me to seek career options during campus-held job fairs. Stout does a great job of industry relations. It has made a great name for itself as a school that produces very ready professionals. It gave me a fun and very energetic atmosphere that I will take with me everywhere.

If I could offer advice to anyone considering a degree in Construction, it would be to get involved with one professional organization. Not only does it give you a gold star on your resume, but it also allows you to surround yourself with other serious and devoted students. It is important to do at least one activity that involves others; however there must be a balance at school. Successful students balance academics with work and sports. Above all, enjoy your college years by using them as a launching pad to your life!
