Campus Climate/Cuture:  Improve the Effectiveness of Internal Communication
B. Describe this Action Project's goal in 100 words or fewer:  
The goal of this project is to improve internal commuication at UW-Stout. This project is aligned with the University's enduring goals and the AQIP criteria. Completing this project will serve as a concrete action to improve UW-Stout's Quality Program.

Key steps in the project include:

1). Conducting an audit of internal communications utilizing the 2006 Job Satisfaction/Morale Task Force results, morale survey results, past morale and communication studies and listening session comments.

2). Developing an internal communicatons plan to address the vehicles used for communicaton, the amount of information being communicated and the effectiveness of the information being communicated.

3). Implement the recommendations from the 2006 Job Satisfaction/Morale Task Force Results

4). Communicating accomplishments, changes and improvements related to the strategic planning and priority identification processes to the campus through printed and electronic communication

D. Describe briefly your institution's reasons for taking on this Action Project now -- why the project and its goals are high among your current priorities:
This project was identified during UW-Stout's Strategic Planning Group retreat in the summer of 2006 and discussed with the campus during a series of listening sessions in the fall of 2006.

This project stems from the findings of a recent job satisfaction and morale project. Faculty and staff involved in the project felt that little is done with the input they provide through campus committees, forums, surveys, message boards and other listening posts. They also believe that the campus needs to do a better job of communicating good news and recognizing employee accomplishments.

These same concerns also surfaced during a review of UW-Stout's Quality Improvement Program at a recent AQIP Strategy Forum.

This project has been identified as a University Priority for 2007-2008. It is aligned with UW-Stout's enduring goals related to campus climate and it is aligned with the AQIP Cateogory of Leading and Communicating
E. List the organizational areas - -institutional departments, programs, divisions, or units -- most affected by or involved in this Action Project:
The University Communications Office will lead this effort. However, input will be obtained from faculty and staff across campus on the amount and types of communication desired. Several members of the Chancellor's Advisory Council will be involved in implementing recommendations from the Job Satisfaction/Morale Task Force report. Ultimately all faculty and staff will be affected by this project. The Office of Budget, Planning and Analysis will play a key role in summarizing accomplishments, changes and improvements and making this information accessible to the campus.
F. Name and describe briefly the key organizational process(es) that you expect this Action Project to change or improve:
This project is intended to improve the existing internal communication and employee recognition processes. It may also lead to changes in the existing leadership processes and better understanding of the strategic planning process.
G. Explain the rationale for the length of time planned for this Action Project (from kickoff to target completion):
This project was discussed with the campus and finalized in the fall of 2006. It will kickoff in spring 2007 and is anticipated to be completed in no more than two years (see steps above). Due to the nature of this project, it is anticipated that there will be ongoing actions that will extend past the formal project period.
H. Describe how you plan to monitor how successfully your efforts on this Action Project are progressing:  
This project will be monitored internally by the Office of Budget, Planning and Analysis and the Chancellor's Advisory Council. Every six months, a formal project update will be requested and shared with the two groups listed above. Also, performance indicators have been identified at the university level to assess progress towards this, and other, action projects.  Progress on these performance indicators is reviewed annually.  In addition, the champion for the project is the University Commuications Director. This individual reports directly to the Chancellor and will provide him with informal progress updates.
I. Describe the overall "outcome" measures or indicators that will tell you whether this Action Project has been a success or failure in achieving its goals:
A number of measures will be used including the completion of the communicaton audit, the inventory of actions taken, the compilation and distrubtion of information on accomplishements, changes and improvements and the overall level of employee satisfaction (as measured through annual surveys conducted by the Office of Budget, Planning and Analysis)
