First of all, thank you for showing an interest in UW-Stout. I have had the privilege of serving this campus for more than two decades, and each day I still am amazed at the energy, innovation and dedication to higher education that I find among our students, faculty and staff.

In March 2007, the UW System Board of Regents designated UW-Stout as Wisconsin’s Polytechnic University.  That designation now is a major part of what we represent as an institution, and it is a guiding force in all of our decisions.

In large measure, however, that designation simply was an acknowledgement of what UW-Stout always has been: a comprehensive, career-focused polytechnic university where students, faculty and staff use applied learning, scientific theory and research to solve real-world problems, grow the state’s economy and serve society.

We have had amazing growth in the number of new, exciting majors that we offer undergraduates, including computer engineering, plastics engineering and video game design and development. These were added to our already innovative array of career-focused majors that produce highly successful graduates.  Year in and year out, 95 percent or more of our students are employed a year after graduation, and most of them work in their field of study.

Our campus also has undergone tremendous change.  I still marvel every time I walk into our new Jarvis Hall science building, part of a $43 million project that has given our science, mathematics, technology and engineering students some of the best laboratories in the UW System.

But, we offer a lot more at UW-Stout than top-notch academic programs and new buildings.  Our eStout program is part of a digital environment that is second to none in the Midwest. When an undergraduate steps on campus, he or she is handed a laptop computer, which will be replaced after two years. That laptop is a key tool in our educational experience. UW-Stout has wireless access all over campus, and our professors integrate technology in the way they teach. UW-Stout’s classrooms  have the most modern technology and media capabilities.

At UW-Stout, students find a warm, inviting and safe atmosphere that welcomes them to campus. We are known for our  progressive planning process that keeps UW-Stout — the first university to win the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award — on the cutting edge of educational advances.

All this said, the dedication of our faculty and staff is what really makes the difference at UW-Stout.  Our students get all the personal attention they need, both in and out of the classroom, to achieve their highest goals.

So, welcome to UW-Stout.  After spending some time with us, I hope you believe, like I do, that UW-Stout truly is a special place.
