Research Support
Access to Databases
- Subscription Library Databases: The University Library subscribes to over 150 licensed databases. Alumni have on-campus access to these. View an alphabetical list of licensed databases.
- Databases Available Free to the Public: Some databases are available free on the web; however, many do not include the coverage or full-text that is available in the library databases.
- Wisconsin Residents: The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction provides access through BadgerLink for Wisconsin residents to the state's public, school, academic, and special libraries and Internet Service Providers. Also, The DPI currently contracts with two vendors (EBSCO and ProQuest) to provide access to articles from thousands of newspaper and periodical titles, image files, and other reference materials.
- Minnesota Residents: MnLINK, funded in part by the State of Minnesota, includes the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities, the University of Minnesota, Minnesota's public library systems, state agency, private college, K-12 school, and special libraries.

- Stout Library Catalog can be searched to identify books and audiovisual materials at the UW-Stout University Library.
- WisCat can be searched to identify books and audiovisual materials at university, school, and public libraries in Wisconsin (for WI residents only).
Online Research Guides
The Reference Librarians have developed numerous Subject and Reference Guides which contain web links to selective resources in UW-Stout's programs. Please contact us if you'd like a research guide created on a topic of interest to you.
Training on Library Resources
Reference librarians are available to provide personalized instruction to alumni in the use of library tools, databases, and other resources. This instruction can be at your convenience.
Library Information and Services
Borrowing Privileges
Alumni of UW-Stout may apply for a community card in order to check out material from the library. There is a limit of 15 items; videos and a number of other items are not available for checkout to alumni. Contact the Circulation Desk (715-232-1215) for information on obtaining a community card and restrictions for checkout.
Interlibrary Loan
Alumni with a community card can check out materials from the University Library. Other alumni should request Stout library materials through their local public library or, if associated with a university, through that university library's loan service.

- BioMed Central Peer-reviewed biomedical research from 187 journals.
- Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) Comprehensive subject and language coverage from 1178 journals. Searchable at the article level with 190,000+ full text articles.
- ERIC from the U.S. Dept. of Education provides access to 1.2 million+ records of journal articles and other education-related materials and, if available, includes links to full text.
- FindArticles.com An archive of published articles from 1998 to date from 300+ journals and magazines. Topics include business, health, society, entertainment, sports and more.
- Free Library An archive of published articles from 1984 to date from hundreds of publications. Topics include business and Industry, communications, entertainment, health, humanities, law, government, politics, recreation and leisure, science and technology, and social sciences.
- Highwire Press A division of the Stanford University Libraries, HighWire Press hosts the largest repository of high impact, peer-reviewed content, with 1100+ journals. HighWire-hosted publishers have collectively made 1.8 million articles free. Topic include the biological sciences, humanities, medical sciences, physical sciences and social sciences.
- MagPortal Includes individual magazine articles on the Web. Topics include business computers electronics, education, entertainment, leisure, finance, health, pets, animals, science, technology, politics, culture, society, sports, and recreation.
- Public Library of Science (PloS One) An international, full text, peer-reviewed, open-access, online publication. Coverage focus is on medical and scientific research.
- ScienceResearch.com Web portal with scientific journals and public science databases; some full text articles are available. Topics include Astronomy, Biology, Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Physics, Medical Sciences, Psychology and Social Sciences.
- UW-Stout Thesis Theses submitted from 1998 on are available full-text on the web. This link is to the instructions for searching the Stout Library Catalog for theses.
- University Publications Index Search the Stoutonia and other UW-Stout publications. Other local area databases are available at the Area Research Center and University Archives page under Searchable Indexes.
Free Online Full-Text Journal Articles
- Several journals related to UW-Stout programs are listed on the Subject and Reference Guides. Look for the section titled PERIODICALS on each guide.
Purchase Textbooks/Resources Available at Instructional Resources Service
- The Instructional Resources Service (IRS) is Stout's textbook rental service. Anyone has the option to purchase used or withdrawn books.
