WilsonWeb Instructions

WilsonWeb is an online reference system accessible via the Internet. It offers a variety of proprietary full text databases. The comprehensive databases range from general collections to specially designed, subject-specific databases in the areas of art, biography, business, education, humanities, sciences and social sciences.

Advanced Search and View Articles

Step 1 - Start at the Library Home Page

Step 2 - Select Indexes and Databases.

Step 3 - Select WilsonWeb under Major Vendors.

Step 4 - Place a check mark next to the databases to be searched. Several can be searched at once; ex: Education Full text, Social Sciences Full Text and Omnifile.

Step 5 - Search the database(s).

• The Search Screen will then display the search boxes, drop down menus for type of search and search limits.
• Type in the search topic; ex: bullying (in one search box) and high school students (in the next search box).
  • Drop Down Menus (to the right of the search box) - click on the Down Arrow and select a Search Method. A keyword search (default method) will retrieve more relevant articles.
• A Drop Down Menu is available for the search operators.
  • and = narrows search, all terms are in the search results.
  • or = broadens search, at least one term has to be in the search results.
  • not = narrows search, eliminates a term from the search result.
• Search Limits:
• Search Limits - place a check mark or fill in the radio button in the limit options, ex: dates, full text, peer reviewed (scholarly articles).
• Sort Drop Down Menu - select relevance (most recent are listed first), author, etc.
• Click on Start.

Step 6 - View Articles.

• Citations are displayed in the Results: Brief Display list.
• Click on the blue underlined article title to view an abstract summary and other document details: author(s), article title, periodical title (source), volume, issue number, date, article page(s).
• If the article is not of interest, click on the Back to Brief button at the bottom on the page to go back to the results brief display list.
• If Full Text is available, click on the icon to display the article.
  • Full Text HTML = Web Page
  • Full Page PDF = Image (Need Adobe Acrobat Reader downloaded to your computer)
• Not all articles are full text. Click "Find it!" to generate a menu that may provide the following options:
  • A link to the full text article in another database.
  • A link to the Stout Library Catalog to search for holdings in the library's Periodicals Collection.
  • A link to the ILLiad form to request the article from another library (interlibrary loan).
  • A link to Google, the search engine. Occasionally, some articles are free full text on the Web.
  • A link to the Ask a Librarian form, if you have a question.

Marking Multiple Records to Retain

To retain the citation and full text (if available), multiple records may be marked from multiple pages of the results list.

• Place a check mark to the right of the citation.
• Click on Get Marked button located at the bottom of the screen to see the marked citations list.
• The articles then may be printed, e-mailed or saved.

Print, E-mail, or Save an Article from WilsonWeb Databases

Internet Explorer (IE) is the Internet browser used on the library's computers. The following procedures must be used for printing, e-mailing, and saving, or problems will subsequently occur. This is due to WilsonWeb being frames oriented while IE is not. These procedures also apply when using IE on personal computers. The only difference occurs while saving from the File, Save browser menu functions which are configured to the computer that is being used. Use the Print E-mail Save button for WilsonWeb whenever possible -- not the browser toolbar (e.g. Internet Explorer) commands.

Print:

• Full Text (HTML)
  • Display the Full Text Article.
  • Click on the Print button above the article.
  • Click Print. The full text article will be displayed without frames.
  • The print option menu will appear.
  • Select the printer and click on the Print button.
• PDF:
  • Adobe Acrobat Reader must also be installed on the computer used to retrieve the article.
  • Click on the PDF icon and the article will be displayed in Adobe Acrobat Reader.
  • Use the Printer icon immediately above the article with in the Adobe Acrobat software frame.
  • Make sure that the printer is selected if different than the default listed.
  • Click on the Print button.

E-mail:

• Full Text (HTML)
  • Display the Full Text Article.
  • Click on the E-mail button above the article.
  • Type in a full E-mail address, ex: smithp@uwstout.edu (required).
  • Type in a subject (required).
  • Click the E-mail button.
• PDF:
  • Adobe Acrobat Reader must also be installed on the computer used to retrieve the article.
  • Click on the PDF icon and the article will be displayed in Adobe Acrobat Reader.
  • Click on the Page Icon Down Arrow on the Internet Explorer 7 toolbar.
  • Click on Send Page by Email from the drop down menu.
  • An e-mail form will appear and type in the full e-mail address, ex: smithp@uwstout.edu. The subject is optional.
  • Click on Send.
  • Note: These instructions for PDF e-mailing are for IE7 and may be slightly different for other earlier versions of IE.

Save:

• Insert a formatted, 3 1/2" Floppy Disk in the A drive, a Zip disk in the Zip drive (Removable Disk), Jump Drive (USB Port), formatted CD-R disc, or save to the campus server (H drive).
• Full Text (HTML)
  • Display the Full Text Article.
  • Click on the Save button above the article.
  • The File Download window will appear. If the doesn't begin, click on the here link and the article will appear.
  • Click on the Page Icon Down Arrow on the Internet Explorer 7 toolbar.
  • Click on Save As from the pull down menu.
  • Click on the Save button.
  • Select a drive, 3 1/2" Floppy Disc, Removable Disk (Zip), CD-R or H drive.
  • Type in a filename, ex: education articles.
  • Under "Save a Type", select Web Page HTML Only. This format works best when saving HTML articles.
  • Click on Save.
  • Note: These instructions for HTML saving are for IE7 and may be slightly different for other earlier versions of IE.
• PDF:
• Adobe Acrobat Reader must also be installed on the computer used to retrieve the article.
• Click on the PDF icon and the article will be displayed in Adobe Acrobat Reader.
• Click on the Save Icon in the Adobe Acrobat software frame. The "Save a Copy" window will appear.
• Select a drive, 3 1/2" Floppy Disc, Removable Disk (Zip), CD-R or H drive.
• Type in a filename.
• Under "Save a Type", select Adobe PDF Files. This format works best when saving PDF articles.
• Click on Save.
• To retrieve an article:
  • Click on My Computer.
  • Double-click on A, Zip, C, Jump, CD-R or H drives.
  • Double-click on the filename.

Journal Title Search

To locate articles on a topic from a specific journal title, use the following steps:

Step 1 - Start at the Library Home page.

Step 2 - Select Indexes and Databases.

Step 3 - Select WilsonWeb under Major Vendors.

Step 4 - Place a check mark next to the databases to be searched. Several can be searched at once; ex: Education Full text, Social Sciences Full Text and Omnifile.

Step 5 - Search the Database(s).

• Type in a search (in one search box), ex: bullying
• Type in the periodical title (in the next search box), ex: Theory into Practice
• Drop Down Menus (to the right of the search box) - click on the Down Arrow next to bullying and select Keyword. In the dropdown menu for Theory into Practice, select Journal Name.
• Click on Start.

Step 6 - View Article(s).

• Citations are displayed in the Results: Brief Display list.

Remote Access to the Library Resources via an Internet Service Provider

This symbol indicates restricted library resources for use by UW-Stout students, faculty and staff.

When accessing library resources using an Internet Service Provider (ISP) such as America Online, Airstream or a local provider, a username and password prompt will appear.

A Stout e-mail username and password is required. Distance Education students and students taking short term/weekend classes may not have activated e-mail accounts. If a Stout e-mail account is not activated, follow the Remote Access Instructions or contact Ask5000 help desk (telephone) 715-232-5000 or ask5000@uwstout.edu.
