What is RefWorks?
RefWorks is a web-based bibliographic management tool (often called a "citation manager") which allows saving references from database and library catalog searches to produce bibliographies and create personal databases of citations. Instructions on how to import/export citations to RefWorks from some of the UW-Stout University Library's subscription databases follow.
EBSCOhost
Step 1 - Add items to folder, click on Folder Has Items.
Step 2 - Select the items to export.
Step 3 - Click Export.
Step 4 - Choose Direct Export to RefWorks. Make sure pop-up blocker is turned off.
Step 5 - Click Save (left side of screen).
Step 6 - RefWorks opens in a new window. Log in with your username and password.
Step 7 - References are imported automatically into RefWorks.
ACS American Chemical Society
Step 1 - In the list of search results, click Select Citation box to mark records on one screen at a time.
Step 2 - Click Download Selected Citations.
Step 3 - Choose the type of download, select RefWorks, and click Download.
Step 4 - Then click Export to RefWorks.
Step 5 - Do this on each screen; it does not compile a list from multiple screens.
Step 6 - References are imported directly into RefWorks.
Annual Review of Nutrition
Step 1 - In the list of search results, mark records.
Step 2 - Click on Download to Citation Manager.
Step 3 - Choose RefWorks for Citation Manager or File Format.
Step 4 - Click Download Chapter Metadata.
Step 5 - References are imported directly into RefWorks.
CQ Researcher
Note: Citations must be exported one at a time; can not create a marked list to export.
Step 1 - In the list of search results, display the full text of the item by clicking on its title.
Step 2 - Click CiteNow! at the top of the screen.
Step 3 - Choose the citation style you want (APA, MLA, etc.).
Step 4 - From Export citation to: choose RefWorks.
CSA Illumina (Cambridge Scientific)
Step 1 - In the list of search results, mark records by clicking on the box next to the title.
Step 2 - Click on RefWorks in the yellow tab near the top of the results page.
Step 3 - Click on Export to RefWorks.
Step 4 - RefWorks opens in a new window. Log in with your username and password.
Step 5 - References are imported automatically into RefWorks.
Emerald Library
Step 1 - In the list of search results, mark the articles by clicking in the box to the right of the article.
Step 2 - Click the Add to My List link located just above the results list, and then click OK.
Step 3 - When finished marking and adding, select Marked List from the left menu.
Step 4 - Click the Download (ASCII) link.
Step 5 - From the I.E. toolbar, select Edit > Select all > Edit > Copy.
Step 6 - Log in to RefWorks; click on References on the menu, then select Import.
Step 7 - From the Import Data/Filter Source, select Emerald.
Step 8 - Select the folder in which to import citations (optional).
Step 9 - Click the circle beside Import Data from the following Text.
Step 10 - From the I.E. toolbar, select Edit > Paste.
Step 11 - Click Import button.
Step 12 - Select View Last Imported Folder.
Engineering Village 2
Step 1 - In the list of search results, mark citations.
Step 2 - Just above the list of citations is a box labeled, Results Manager. Click the box labeled Download.
Step 3 - Click the circle beside RefWorks direct import, then click Download.
Step 4 - References are imported directly into RefWorks.
FirstSearch - WorldCat - BadgerCat - Bibliography of the History of Art
Step 1 - In the list of search results, mark records.
Step 2 - Click on the Export button.
Step 3 - Choose Export: Marked Records.
Step 4 - Choose Export to: RefWorks.
Step 5 - Click the Export button.
Step 6 - References are imported automatically into RefWorks.
IEEE Xplore
Step 1 - For each screen, mark citations; then click View Selected Items button.
Step 2 - On the left of the page, there is an option to Download Citations. Choose Citation or Citation with Abstract and select RefWorks from the pull down menus provided.
Step 3 - Click the Download button.
Step 4 - References are imported automatically into RefWorks.
Ingenta
Step 1 - Click www.ingentaconnect.com at the bottom of the page.
Step 2 - For each screen, mark citations, then click Update Marked List at the top or bottom of the screen before making selections on another screen.
Step 3 - On the right side of the screen, click on Bookmarking options and select Marked List.
Step 4 - Then click on Export Options and select plain text.
Step 5 - From the I.E. toolbar, select Edit > Select all > Edit > Copy.
Step 6 - Log in to RefWorks; click on References on the menu, then select Import.
Step 7 - From the Import Data/Filter Source, select Ingenta.
Step 8 - Select the folder into which to import citations (optional).
Step 9 - Click the circle beside Import Data from the following Text.
Step 10 - From the I.E. toolbar, select Edit > Paste.
Step 11 - Click Import.
Step 12 - RefWorks opens in a new window. Log in with your username and password.
Step 13 - Select View Last Imported Folder.
JSTOR
Step 1 - In the list of search results, select articles by clicking the Save Citation link at the bottom of each citation.
Step 2 - Click View Saved Citations (right side).
Step 3 - Click Directly export citations into RefWorks.
Step 4 - RefWorks opens in a new window. Log in with your username and password.
Step 5 - References are imported automatically into RefWorks.
Leisuretourism
Step 1 - In the list of search results, mark records.
Step 2 - At the bottom of the screen, click Export (found directly to the right of RefWorks).
Step 3 - RefWorks opens in a new window. Log in with your username and password.
Step 4 - References are imported automatically into RefWorks.
Lexis Nexis
Step 1 - In the list of search results, mark records.
Step 2 - Click the View Tagged button.
Step 3 - Click on the small book icon in the upper right of the screen. (May need to right-click on the icon, then choose Open Link in New Window.)
Step 4 - Click Export button.
Step 5 - RefWorks opens in a new window. Log in with your username and password.
Step 6 - References are imported automatically into RefWorks.
MathSci Net
Step 1 - In the list of search results, select citations by clicking the Clipboard link beneath each record.
Step 2 - Open the Clipboard by clicking on the Clipboard link at the top right of the screen.
Step 3 - From the Select Format dropdown menu choose Citations (Endnote) and click the Save Clip link.
Step 4 - Highlight text. From the I.E. toolbar, select Edit > Copy.
Step 5 - Open RefWorks in another window. Log in with your username and password.
Step 6 - In RefWorks select References > Import.
Step 7 - From the Import Data/Filter Source, select Endnote View .
Step 8 - From the Database dropdown box, select Endnote View.
Step 9 - Select the folder in which to import citations (optional).
Step 10 - Click the circle beside Import Data from the following Text. From the I.E. toolbar, select Edit > Paste.
Step 11 - Click Import button.
Step 12 - Select View Last Imported Folder.
Nutrition Abstracts and Reviews
Step 1 - In the list of search results, mark records.
Step 2 - At the bottom of the screen, click Export (found directly to the right of RefWorks).
Step 3 - RefWorks opens in a new window. Log in with your username and password.
Step 4 - References are imported directly into RefWorks.
Physics Journals (Institute of Physics)
Note: Citations must be exported one at a time; can not create a marked list to export.
Step 1 - In the list of search results, click on the abstract title link of a an article.
Step 2 - Click Download Citation on the right of the page.
Step 3 - Select Endnote and click Download.
Step 4 - From the I.E. toolbar, select Edit > Select all > Edit > Copy.
Step 5 - Log in to RefWorks; click on References on the menu, then select Import.
Step 6 - From the Import Data/Filter Source, select Endnote View.
Step 7 - Select the folder in which to import citations (optional).
Step 8 - Click the circle beside Import Data from the following Text.
Step 9 - From the I.E. toolbar, select Edit > Paste.
Step 10 - Click Import button.
Step 11 - Select View Last Imported Folder .
Project Muse
Step 1 - In the list of search results, mark records.
Step 2 - Click Save Marked Results.
Step 3 - Click the button labeled Email/Export Saved Results located at the top of the screen.
Step 4 - Choose RefWorks and click Export.
Step 5 - References are imported automatically into RefWorks.
ProQuest
Step 1 - In the list of search results, mark records.
Step 2 - Select My Research tab at the top of the screen.
Step 3 - Click Export Citations.
Step 4 - Choose Export directly to RefWorks.
Step 5 - RefWorks opens in a new window. Log in with your username and password.
Step 6 - References are imported automatically into RefWorks.
Step 7 - Select View Last Imported Folder.
Stout Library Catalog (Endeavor Voyager)
Step 1 - In the list of search results, mark records.
Step 2 - In the bottom Record Options box, choose Selected all Pages; in the box labeled Select Download Format choose Endnote Citation, then click Format for Print or Save.
Step 3 - Save the results as plain text (.txt) to import into RefWorks. From the I.E. toolbar, select File > Save As.
Step 4 - Login to your RefWorks account and select References > Import.
Step 5 - Select Endeavor Voyager for the Import Filter/Data Source and choose University of Wisconsin Stout for the Database.
Step 6 - Click the circle beside Import Data from the following Text file, then browse for the saved file
Step 7 - Click Import.
Step 8 - Select View Last Imported Folder.
Web of Science from ISI (Institute for Scientific Information)
Step 1 - In the list of search results, mark records and click Add to Marked List. When finished searching and marking, click Marked List tab.
Step 2 - In the Select an Option box, choose Bibliographic and Field Tagged (bottom of the page).
Step 3 - Click the Save to Endnote, RefMan, or other reference software button.
Step 4 - Click the Export button.
Step 5 - Save file using ISI's default type. From the I.E. toolbar, select File > Save As.
Step 6 - Login to your RefWorks account and select References > Import.
Step 7 - Select ISI (Institute for Scientific Information) for the Import Filter/Data Source and choose Web of Science for the Database.
Step 8 - Click the circle by Import Data from the following Text File, then browse for, and select, the recently saved file.
Step 9 - Select View Last Imported Folder.
Wilson Web
Step 1 - In the list of search results, mark records.
Step 2 - Click the Exporting/Citing tab.
Step 3 - Choose Export to RefWorks, EndNote Software.
Step 4 - Choose Download Record(s) into: RefWorks' Direct Export Tool.
Step 5 - Click Export.
Step 6 - RefWorks opens in a new window. Log in with your username and password.
Step 7 - References are imported automatically into RefWorks.
