GETTING TO REFWORKS

To become thoroughly acquainted with all facets, view RefWorks Tutorial

Start at the Indexes and Databases Alphabetical List : Choose RefWorks . For Remote Users only: In order to access RefWorks, from offcampus, login with individual Stout username and password.

SET UP AN ACCOUNT

Step 1 - Click on the RefWorks link (in upper left corner).
Step 2 - Then click on RefWorks again.
Step 3 - Click on Sign Up For Account and complete the information
Step 4 - For future logins, type in a Ref Works LOG-IN NAME and PASSWORD, then click LOG-IN button.

IMPORTING CITATIONS TO REFWORKS

Exporting Records to RefWorks  provides instructions on how to import/export citations to RefWorks from many of the library databases. Following are instructions for select high-use databases.

EBSCOHOST

Step 1 - Add items to folder, click on Folder Has Items.
Step 2 - Select the items to export.

Step 3 - Click Export.

Step 4 - Choose Direct Export to RefWorks. Make sure pop-up blocker is turned off.

Step 5 - Click Save (left side of screen).

Step 6 - RefWorks opens in a new window. Log in with your username and password.

Step 7 - References are imported automatically into RefWorks.

PROQUEST

Step 1 - In the list of search results, mark records.
Step 2 - Select My Research tab at the top of the screen.

Step 3 - Click Export Citations.

Step 4 - Choose Export directly to RefWorks.

Step 5 - RefWorks opens in a new window. Log in with your username and password.

Step 6 - References are imported automatically into RefWorks.

Step 7 - Select View Last Imported Folder.

STOUT LIBRARY CATALOG (Endeavor Voyager)

Step 1 - In the list of search results, mark records.
Step 2 - In the bottom Record Options box, choose Selected all Pages; in the box labeled Select Download Format choose Endnote Citation, then click Format for Print or Save.

Step 3 - Save the results as plain text (.txt) to import into RefWorks. From the I.E. toolbar, select File > Save As.

Step 4 - Login to your RefWorks account and select References > Import.

Step 5 - Select Endeavor Voyager for the Import Filter/Data Source and choose University of Wisconsin Stout for the Database.

Step 6 - Click the circle beside Import Data from the following Text file, then browse for the saved file

Step 7 - Click Import.

Step 8 - Select View Last Imported Folder.

WILSONWEB

Step 1 - In the list of search results, mark records.
Step 2 - Click the Exporting/Citing tab.

Step 3 - Choose Export to RefWorks, EndNote Software.

Step 4 - Choose Download Record(s) into: RefWorks' Direct Export Tool.

Step 5 - Click Export.

Step 6 - RefWorks opens in a new window. Log in with your username and password.

Step 7 - References are imported automatically into RefWorks.

ORGANIZING REFERENCES INTO FOLDERS

Step 1 - Click Folders and then Create New Folder; Type the folder name; Click OK. In the View Folder pull-down menu, click Last Imported Folder
Step 2 - Select All in List.
Step 3 - Choose the Put In Folder pull-down menu and select your folder.
Step 4 - Click OK to confirm.

Note: To best organize references after an import, do be sure to move them into a folder before doing another import.

ENTERING REFERENCES MANUALLY

Step 1 - Click References and then select Add a New Reference.
Step 2 - From the In Folder(s) pull-down menu, select the folder in which you want toput the new reference.
Step 3 - From the Ref Type pull down men, select the type of reference i.e. journal, book, to be created.
Step 4 - Input the reference information in appropriate fields. All fields do not need to be completed, only those of use.
Step 5 - Click Save when completed.
Step 6 - The new reference will appear in it's appropriate folder.

CREATING A REFERENCE LIST

In RefWorks you can create a bibliography which may contain your entire database or from a select folder.

To create a bibliography from a Reference List:

Step 1 - Click the Bibliography button.
Step 2 - Under Output Format, select APA.
Step 3 - Click Format a Bibliography from a List of References.
Step 4 - Under File Type To Create, select Word.
Step 5 - Under Include, select All References or References from <foldername>
Step 6 - Click Create Bibliography.
Step 7 - Save the document before closing.

BEWARE: The Reference List is not completely APA-compliant!!

Write-N-Cite, a RefWorks utility plug-in allows incerting in-text citations, from a RefWorks folder, directly into a document.  Using Write-N-Cite is detailed in the RefWorks Tutorial.
